Truthfulness
The high number of referendum signatures collected demonstrates that the Swiss population rejects new nuclear power plants and that the political will of the parliament does not align with the will of the people.
The high number of signatures now proves the opposite.
The text is a press release from the alliance "No to New Nuclear Power Plants" about the successful completion of the referendum signature collection against a new nuclear law in Switzerland. Over 125,000 signatures were collected in three months, more than double the required number. The alliance argues that the population rejects new nuclear power plants because they are expensive, dangerous, and linked to uranium imports from Russia. It is emphasized that the voting population has already voted for a renewable energy future in 2017, 2023, and 2024. The parliament nevertheless approved the nuclear law, which is presented as politics carried out without regard for the people. The signatures will be submitted to the Federal Chancery on 6 October 2026, after which a popular vote is to follow. The text is addressed to the media and the public and invites participation in the submission ceremony.

Over 125,000 people have signed the referendum against new nuclear power plants, more than twice the number required for a referendum. The successful collection shows: the population does not want new nuclear power plants – because they are expensive, dangerous, and make us dependent on uranium imports from Russia. On 6 October, the alliance "No to New Nuclear Power Plants" will submit the signatures to the Federal Chancery in Bern.
On 30 June, a broad alliance of numerous organisations, politicians from all camps, and representatives from the business community launched the referendum against the Atomic Energy Act. With the act, the parliament wants to once again enable the construction of nuclear power plants in Switzerland. The nuclear lobby is not tired of claiming that the wind has turned around the construction of new nuclear power plants in Switzerland. The high number of signatures now proves the opposite.
Great support from the population
Within just three months, it was possible to collect over 125,000 signatures against new nuclear power plants. The collection was carried by hundreds of committed volunteers. The great engagement of people from all political camps was felt throughout Switzerland during the signature collection. The fact that so many signatures were gathered out of conviction in such a short time shows that the population still does not want new nuclear power plants. The risk and the costs are and remain too high for that.
The Federal Council and the parliament politicise bypassing the people
The voting population has clearly decided in favour of a renewable future three times – in 2017 with the yes to the Energy Strategy, in 2023 in the vote on the Climate Protection Act, and in 2024 with a clear acceptance of the Electricity Act. This path is successful: Switzerland increasingly covers its needs with domestic solar energy, storage, wind and hydropower. Nevertheless, the parliament, under great pressure, approved the Atomic Energy Act of the Federal Council.
The referendum will be submitted – a popular vote will follow
That is why the voting population will also have the final say now. The representatives of the alliance, the political parties, and the participating organisations, together with many volunteers, will submit the certified signatures on 6 October 2026 within the deadline to the Federal Chancery.
The media are cordially invited to attend the handover of the signatures:
Tuesday, 6 October 2026, from 1:30 p.m. (submission at 2:00 p.m.)
Federal Chancery
Bundesterrasse, Federal Palace West

Dienstag, 6. Oktober 2026, ab 13:30 Uhr (Einreichen um 14.00 Uhr)
Bundeskanzlei
Bundesterrasse, Bundeshaus West
