Modern society produces a paralyzing fear through an economy of excess that is not resolved by mere distraction, but by a conscious turning toward God and prayer as a core competency of faith.

Especially from us, who should really know better, the power that it is to pray is often underestimated. All that helps is praying, we sometimes say, so carelessly there as doers. Yet it should really be one of our core competencies.

The text begins with a casual greeting and a humorous comparison of spaghetti and worries to introduce the theme of being overwhelmed. The speaker criticizes modern strategies for coping with worries, such as distraction through media or repression, as insufficient. He describes the current time as an 'economy of excess' in which fears are nurtured and usury is practiced. As a counterproposal, he quotes the Niebuhr prayer, which combines serenity, courage, and wisdom. The text emphasizes, however, that believers can go beyond mere action by turning to God. Prayer is presented as an underestimated core competency and an effective means against being overwhelmed by worries. The message is an encouragement to acknowledge one's own powerlessness and to trust in divine help.

Yes, a very good morning to you as well. Warmest greetings from my wife. She is in Asendorf, which is south of Hamburg, at a regional meeting of the FGB. We'll see how she manages to get around Hamburg in the afternoon. That has been a bit more exciting lately. Yes, not long ago I heard a wonderful saying. There are two things we almost always make too much of. Spaghetti and worries. The excess of spaghetti can be solved quite deliciously the next day. Into the pan with it. Bacon, fried egg, Parmesan or Pesto Genovese or Olio e Alici, whatever. It's not so well off with the excess of worries. They give us no nourishment and no satiety, they rather create even more stomach grumbling. And how do I then deal with my excess of worries, if I can't just throw them into the pan or if I have the feeling that the worries are throwing me into the pan? Well, the poem by Ingeborg Bachmann that we heard earlier shows us a strategy, not that of appeasement, yes, even denial. Coping is not even provided for. Be without worry, cheerful, with music, distraction, just don't think about it. Much of what television has delivered and still delivers also works that way. Some of it could easily fall under the narcotic drugs act. The telly as a sedative, as a tranquilliser. But who watches television these days? That's not so many anymore. And the worries, that is managed somewhat differently in our day today, in my impression. It is an economy of surplus. Every apprehension is nurtured and usury is driven with fears. And the competition for the first general unease is opened. Are we still on shaky ground or are we already in free fall? That already brings a bit of longing for the Black Forest Clinic. A little peace, gingerbread, marzipan, the Advent festival of a thousand lights. Let worry be without worry. But how do we truly cope with the worries, before they overwhelm us, so that we don't simply just repress them? The theologian Reinhold Niebuhr once formulated such a prayer. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. You have certainly already heard that. That is wise and very prudent. But we should not forget in this that believing paths are open that also lie beyond his or her action. One does not have to submit to an apparently unavoidable fate, for one can always, at all times, at any moment, turn directly to the one who holds everything in his hands, namely God. Especially from us, who should actually know better, the power that is prayed is often underestimated. Only prayer helps, we sometimes say, so carelessly there as doers. Yet it should actually belong to our core competencies. How was it again with praying?
