The Yoke of Jesus

The biblical yoke of Jesus is not a retreat into passivity, but a call to critical intellectual work to transform the present, shaped by wealth and power, through humane values.

What Jesus is concerned with is a change of thinking, a rethinking. He sees that his message has reached the "minors" and praises the Father for it.

The text interprets Jesus's invitation to take on his gentle yoke not as passive consolation, but as a call to active intellectual engagement with societal structures of power. It contrasts the fascination with wealth and political power, exemplified by Peter Thiel and the tech elite, with the commitment to social justice, exemplified by Graz's mayor Elke Kahr. The speaker argues that material means such as capital and military strength are necessary, but must be framed by humane values such as dignity and justice. He warns against using religion merely as 'wellness' or 'opium,' and instead calls for drawing strength from inner calm for critical thinking. The message is directed at everyone, especially the 'minors,' who should strive for insight themselves rather than leaving it solely to theologians. It is about a 'rethinking' that interweaves biblical theology with the current political and economic reality.

The praise of Jesus to his heavenly Father for the insight of the uninitiated into the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, and his invitation to take upon oneself his yoke, is often misunderstood as appeasement and deferral. It is about an engaged intellectual engagement with fundamental value systems. Rich and Beautiful The fascination with wealth and beauty is responsible for the highly successful American television series "Rich and Beautiful". Wealth and probably also beauty still play an important role in public life today. Milo Rau, the artistic director of the Vienna Festival, had to cancel a discussion event with Peter Thiel and the Innsbruck theologian Wolfgang Pallaver due to public pressure. Peter Thiel, a successful American entrepreneur, is considered an influential thinker behind President Trump and his Vice President J. D. Vance, whose theological theses have caused attention worldwide on multiple occasions. He thereby justifies the demands of major tech billionaires for a political departure from important humane values and from democratic constitutions. In doing so, he draws on biblical images from the Book of Revelation and calls for a new world order driven by wealth and profit maximization. Pope Leo XIV has addressed this development in his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, and shown that it contradicts a Jesuanic-biblical theology in fundamental points. A Communist Mayor Wins Elections On the other hand, the election result of the municipal council elections in Graz, the second-largest city in Austria with 345,000 inhabitants, has opened the eyes of many observers. The communist mayor Elke Kahr not only managed to maintain the majority of votes for her party, but also gained significantly at the expense of the established parties. She convinced many voters through her personal integrity and her convincing commitment to the needs of the socially disadvantaged. A Good News for the Weary and Burdened In the Gospel, we heard how Jesus praises the Father in heaven because he has hidden the understanding of his Good News of the Kingdom of God "from the wise and intelligent and revealed it to the uninitiated". He invites the weary and burdened to come to him. The invitation "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" applies to them and also to us. Wealth, beauty, political power, and military strength fascinate many people. To downplay or ignore this would be too simple-minded and naive. Wealth, beauty, economic and political power, as well as military strength, undoubtedly have high value. However, the decisive question is not how we come to possess them, but how we deal with them. The demand for redistribution is naive and not thought through to the end. It requires a considerable accumulation of capital to be able to advance research and technical development, and people who can handle it well. It requires the exercise of political power and also military strength in order not to become victims of political and military arbitrariness. However, at least equally decisive is the upholding of humane values such as the appreciation of human dignity, social justice, the inclusion of disadvantaged groups, the care of cultural goods, etc. All of this does not fall into our laps. It also requires incentives and motivation for that. Rethinking, New Thinking It is not enough to try to convert these values into money and—as is often said in political circles—to "take money into one's hands". Jesus is concerned with a rethinking, with a new thinking. He sees that his message has reached the "uninitiated" and praises the Father for this. However, it is addressed to all people, including the wise and Wise. Since the beginning of the Church, the disciples of Jesus have been called to this intellectual engagement. Not a few have even given their lives for it. Karl Marx accused the religions of being the opium of the people. We must agree with him when people are content with a religious wellness course and use religious practices solely to find peace for their inner life. "Peace for the soul" is good only if it succeeds in drawing strength from it; strength for the intellectual engagement with mental attitudes that lead away from humane values. We put ourselves in danger if we leave these engagements solely to our high priests, theologians, and other thinkers. Christian and humane values become effective only when we, too, the "small" and the "unmature," strive for insight and allow it to be revealed to us. A king who serves <div
