Faithfulness to Jesus in a hostile environment is possible and worthwhile, because Jesus knows the circumstances of life, wins people through his testimony, and on the day of judgment will confess the faithful.

I know that you live in the city where the great throne of Satan is located. And yet you have remained faithful to my name.

The sermon deals with the letter to the church in Pergamon from the Revelation of John. It presents the historical and religious situation of the city, which was regarded as a centre of the imperial cult and Greek religion. Jesus is portrayed as the one who knows the circumstances of life of the Christians in this hostile environment. The sermon encourages the listeners to remain faithful to Jesus even under pressure and persecution. Three reasons are given: the testimony of Jesus, resistance against the devil, and the eternal victory on the day of judgment. The text refers to the current situation in Germany, where confessing Jesus may become more difficult in the future. The church is called to win people for Jesus through culture and education. The text concludes with the question of whether one is a 'fair-weather Christian' or remains faithful even in difficult times.

Welcome to the sermon of FGG Dresden. We wish you a fruitful time. You can find more information about our church at dresden.fg.de. The former world-class tennis player Boris Becker is said to have once stated that he already knows before a match whether he will win or lose it. He was asked, how do you know that? And he replied, it is connected to my mental state. I know exactly what I am capable of, but I also know where I need to stand internally in order to access all that I am capable of. So, what is within us, what is happening in our hearts, what is happening in our thoughts, all of this ultimately manifests itself externally. Jesus says in this context, in my Matthew 13, verse 35, a good person brings forth good, because he is good in his innermost being. A bad person can only bring forth evil, because he is evil from the ground up. Jesus wants to make it clear that what fills you internally, in your heart, that is what you will simply live out externally. You cannot be in one place in your heart and think that you can credibly live something entirely different. We have also experienced this repeatedly in society at various points, when there is a discrepancy, that it will sooner or later come to light. What is happening within us, what is dwelling there, is decisive, not least for our relationship with Jesus and ultimately also for our behavior in everyday life. And therefore I want to encourage you again and again. God’s Word repeatedly says, above all else, guard your heart. Pay attention to where your heart stands, what you truly believe, what you cling to, what your values are, because it will definitely determine your behavior. And this is also evident in Jesus’ writing to his church in Pergamon, which dates from approximately 1990 to 1995 AD. I will read to you the first two verses from Revelation 2, starting from verse 12. Write this letter, says Jesus, to the angel of the church in Pergamon. This is the message of the one who has a sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you dwell, in the city where Satan’s throne is. And yet you have remained faithful to my name. You have refused to deny faith in me, even though my faithful witness Antipas was murdered before your eyes. Jesus gave John, who was imprisoned on the island of Patmos due to his faith, in exile, the command to give this letter, which he was essentially dictating to him now, to the church leader, which is meant by the angel here, the church leader in Pergamon, and to say. And Pergamon, it is located in western Turkey, and at that time in its significance, compared to the city of Ephesus, about which we have also reflected here before, hardly comes close. Even though Pergamon was certainly not as economically well-established as Ephesus, it had a religiosity and culture that was hardly surpassed. And it had a pronounced sense for education in Pergamon. The city got its name from parchment, from that fine, thin leather on which one could write well, our miracle lines naturally not. The city actually already had a city library at that time, in which 200,000 volumes could be found. And at the same time, of course, also a large theater, about 10,000 seats, so the Semperoper is rather perhaps a cozy scene theater, where people went to actually experience and live culture. In addition, there were several gymnasiums in the city, so if you put all of that together, you can say that education and culture flourished, and the people were obviously enthusiastic about it, were attracted by it. When it comes to culture and education, I would say that we here in Dresden hardly come close to Pergamon. Education and culture offer wonderful opportunities to this day to reach people and introduce them to Jesus. And That is why I am personally so grateful that we have a music school where we can use music to point people, across cultures, to Christ, and that we have so many educational offerings. We have heard a little about some of them. We have marriage work, Alpha courses, creative gatherings, Spätlese, and much, much more, where people realize, “Ah, this is exactly for me,” and which we gladly use to introduce people to Jesus. Pergamon was also regarded as a universal religious center. There was a massive temple there, dedicated to the highest Greek god Zeus and, alongside him, to other gods as well. Situated 300 meters high on a mountain, it towered over the entire city and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World at that time. Not far away was the temple of the snake-healing god Asclepius. Later, the famous physician of antiquity, Galen, practiced there, and crowds of people seeking healing were drawn to Pergamon. And you can imagine, that is why I am telling this: for Christian ears, words that Christians could not accept at all sometimes came up. For example, when it was not only spoken of Asclepius as a helper, but when he was suddenly even worshipped as a savior. And last but not least, Pergamon also early on placed itself at the forefront of the imperial cult in the Roman Empire. As early as 29 BC, there was a temple there that had been erected for the goddess Roma and the emperor Augustus. This makes Jesus’ statement understandable, which He addressed to this congregation in this situation, in this culture: “I know where you dwell, where the throne of Satan is.” The life climate in Pergamon was anything but shaped by Christianity. The Book of Revelation later speaks of the throne of God. Here it is the exact opposite. There God rules, but here, so Jesus says, Satan rules. And in this environment, it was naturally extremely difficult for Christians to remain faithful to Jesus. They had to endure discrimination, up to massive pressure against them. As a climax, they experienced that one of their congregation members was actually killed, Antipas. It is not known exactly whether this was the peak of a wave of persecution or rather one of the opening events for the persecution that later occurred under Domitian. In any case, it was a truly hard time and a great challenge for the congregation to prove themselves as Christians in this god-hating environment. And I think it was incredibly encouraging, incredibly comforting for them when Jesus told them, “I know where you dwell, where the throne of Satan is.” I know, Jesus told the people back then, where you live; I know your life circumstances. And nothing has changed regarding that until today. I do not know under what pressure you may be living your life right now. Who may be making life difficult for you because of your faith. Perhaps there are coworkers, neighbors, friends. Perhaps you are the only Christian in the family. And every time you pray, the others laugh. I do not know what you may be suffering from right now. But one thing I know: that Jesus knows it. And that He sees it. And that you do not have to be subjected to this pressure alone, because Jesus is there and because we, your congregation, are there. And Jesus and we want to stand by you, wherever you need it. Therefore, I would like to encourage you again and again at this point: if you are not yet part of a home Bible study, definitely do it. It is so important to have a handful of Christians around you with whom you meet every week and with whom you can share precisely those things that burden you and encourage you. I want to give you three good reasons why I continue to remain faithful to Jesus, even if others perhaps sometimes mock me or put pressure on me. The first: through your, through my, through our testimony about Jesus, people learn something about Jesus. And therefore they can also anchor their life in him. Of course, Jesus can also take other ways to win these people for himself. I am deeply convinced of that. But He has nevertheless decided to place you in this position where you are standing right now, and through you to testify to the people in your surroundings. And therefore He will also give you the strength to endure the resistance that is associated with it. You can rely on that, even if your words sometimes seem somewhat clumsy to you, Jesus uses them. He told us in Isaiah 55 that not a single word that we speak in His name remains fruitless. Rather, it will bring about exactly what God has intended with it. And therefore, stay with it, remain faithful to Jesus and testify to Him. And the second point: faithfulness to Jesus is ultimately the key to repeatedly resisting these attacks of the devil, to even bring the devil down. And in Revelation 12 we read, they have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb, together the Christians, the devil. They have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. They did not hold back their lives, even unto death. In other words, if you clearly take Jesus’ side, through your life, through your thinking, through your speaking, with your feelings, if you clearly take Jesus’ side, then this, in conjunction with the power of the Almighty God, will lead to the fact that you can resist the attacks of the devil and ultimately even bring the devil down. This is God’s promise here. And therefore, stay with it. And the third point: faithfulness to Jesus is definitely beneficial. I recall again Matthew 10, verses 32, 33. Jesus says, whoever confesses me before men, I also will confess him before My Father in heaven. But whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before My Father in heaven. In other words, Jesus says, if you confess me, I will answer that by confessing you on the day of judgment before My Father in heaven. Regardless of what that may or may not have accomplished in this world. You carry this victory with you. I will confess you before My Father. And what, dear ones, do we need more in the end? But let us always keep one thing in view. If we remain faithful to Jesus, there is not always a happy ending on earth. We would like that. Come to Jesus and your problems dissolve into thin air. Over the life of Antipas stands: come to Jesus and testify to Him. And there is a very quick final solution, that you come to Jesus. He was killed. For his faith. There is not always a happy ending. And millions and millions, approximately 360 million Christians, are currently experiencing pressure, persecution, up to and including killing because of their faith. Let us never forget that. But over Antipas, which I really like about it, stands a title that stands over Jesus at the beginning of Revelation. He is called the faithful witness. So exactly that, this honorable title that Jesus receives, is attached to him. And that is the title that ultimately counts before our Father in heaven. And therefore it is worth it to remain faithful to Jesus. And such faithfulness characterized the church in Pergamum. They are not fair-weather Christians. And I have asked myself, Uli, what are you? What are we here in the church? Are we fair-weather Christians? Do we stay with Jesus when things are going well, because we are fully in the flow? Or will we also be there when we suddenly notice that there is resistance? Personally, I am convinced that it will cost us more in the future, even in Germany, to confess Jesus. When I see how quickly today the word fundamentalist is brought up, in discussion rounds and how quickly it is negatively charged, also with People who simply hold a certain attitude, then I fear that we Christians, with our claim that salvation is found in no one else but in the name of Jesus Christ, will also come under considerable pressure. And if we also say that this is the only way to God and that all other religions are ultimately misguided paths, then we will certainly not receive awards for this in the future, but rather be considered agitators, possibly even fundamentalists who are only out for trouble, even though that is not true at all. But alongside all the faithfulness of the church in Pergamum, Jesus also sees in it the danger that everything will soon come to nothing if the church does not confront the danger within it, does not clean it up. Jesus sees a false teaching and its consequence. Pastoral, yet clearly and distinctly, Jesus speaks of something, of some things, that must be criticized in this faithful church for its own well-being and salvation. And dear ones, this is simply always the case, we must make this clear to ourselves: when Jesus has something to criticize in us, it is always because he intends good, never to destroy us. Even if this sometimes means a great challenge for us, a huge life change that is difficult for us. But Jesus does not do this to annoy us, but so that we can actually be and remain in unity with him. And therefore I want to strongly encourage you: if you notice such challenges from Jesus, do not strike out against them, but accept them and ask, Lord, what is it that you want to tell me? What is it where I still deviate in places from what my life can actually bear, because you consider it right and good? What is that? And dear ones, and this heart of Jesus, we will also occasionally have to criticize things in each other within the church. That is quite normal. It is called the path of sanctification, growth in faith, discipleship, all the same concept. And it only works, we will only gain momentum toward Jesus, if we point out to each other things that are not right. And that is always the question: what is your heart in this? Do you say it because you love the other person, because they are important to you? Or do any other motives come into play? I want to strongly ask you: before you criticize someone, bring your heart to the point where you say what you say out of love. And not out of any other motive. It will come to light sooner or later. We said it at the beginning of the sermon. And that is why it is so important. Our heart must truly be full of love. Jesus says, quite bluntly, I continue reading from Revelation 2, verse 14. And yet I have one thing against you. You tolerate people among you who are like Balaam. Balaam, whom Balak showed, who was able to set a trap for the people of Israel. He led the Israelites to eat meat that had been sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality. So you tolerate among you those who follow the teachings of the Nicolaitans. What is the background? Balaam had been hired before the god-fearing King Balak to curse the people of Israel. Balak and his people had become afraid of this people who camped before their door. But God thwarted this plan; instead of being able to pronounce a curse over this people of God, Balaam had to bless them. God simply turned his words around. And so Balaam then recommended to Balak: Balak, if you cannot defeat the people with heavy weapons, that is, with the curse, then perhaps with young girls. Balak was to invite the Israelites to the feast days of their gods. And at such feast days, the gods also simultaneously served as hosts at the table. The meat was consecrated to them, and they virtually shared in their meal. And when people had eaten well and enjoyed wine properly, then the inhibitions fell, and later also the garments. For after all, the people were supposed to to imitate what was happening in nature, namely the Mother Goddess Earth, who was also moistened and fertilized by the rain god Bal. And it was this divine marriage that had to be honored, at this festival of honor for the gods, as far as the teaching or the ruse of Biliam is concerned. And similarly, things are now unfolding in Pergamon. The devil changed tactics. Frontally, the Christians could not be taken. They simply stuck with Jesus. That had been shown to this faithful witness by an antipass. So, on to Plan B: niceties. Light girls instead of heavy boys. Isolation and cold-shouldering. That is how we will get a firm grip on the pious ones. Business friends and relatives invited the Christians to meals, and so many a Mark might have thought, well, we cannot be that close. Besides, I know my limits. And I may perhaps have to show my face again with one or the other. Otherwise, the others will think I no longer exist, and that is bad for business. For such a line of thinking, the theological direction of the Nicolaitans came just right. In Ephesus, they could not land with their teaching, but in Pergamon. For them, union with the Deity within oneself is the highest goal. And therefore, the body was not so important. They taught that salvation concerns the soul, concerns the heart. Let us share the shabby earthly things in community, such as money or, for example, what gives us pleasure, namely women. It is quite conceivable that they provided theological justification for a part of the congregation for what these people had actually wanted to live mentally for a long time. Paul warns us against such thinking in Galatians 5. "For freedom Christ has set you free, my brothers and sisters. But do not use your freedom as a license for self-indulgence, but serve one another in love." Here it is about more than marriage, about fornication, dear ones. It is about a fatal, human- and faith-destroying principle of life. It is always dangerous when we try, in the end, to justify what we live by with the teaching. God's word must determine our life, and not life in the end and for theology. And there, at certain points, I am simply holding my breath at the moment. I am saying this quite directly, because we live in a time in which we try to biblically and pastorally legalize much of what people are living. I want to warn against this at this point; it will not end well. Not for the individual and not for the church of Jesus. Some Christians in Pergamon had fallen victim to this ruse of the devil, to the extent that their theology, in the truest sense of the word, underpinned the principle of pleasure. A danger that, perhaps even more strongly in a transferred sense, can be found in the church of Jesus to this day, in my opinion. And there we should ask ourselves two very concrete questions. The first: where are we in danger of living or believing an adapted mixture of faith? And the second: what may faith actually cost me? What may faith cost me? Personally. In my way of life, in dealing with my sexuality, socially. Also in terms of reputation, professionally, economically. The candor of mine simply, because he was honest and his partners, lost his entire company. One had to watch for a lifetime how he somehow got by. Because he felt the consequences coldly and they were dumped on him. What may it cost me economically? To remain faithful to Jesus. Verse 16: "Repent," says Jesus, "otherwise I will come soon and fight with the sword of my mouth." I once borrowed such a sword. I do not put it in my mouth, that would ruin my teeth. As difficult as that is. But that is something, isn't it? Such a sword here. Fortunately, it stands far enough away from the front row. But one can easily imagine, such a sword, it does not just strike in, but such a sword, that It also separates irreversibly. The image of the sword points us a little deeper to Hebrews 4, verse 12. There it says that the word of God is living. It is an effective power. It is sharper than the sharpest, double-edged sword. Just as a sword cuts deeply, severs the joints, and lays bare the marrow of the bones, so the word of God cuts into the innermost parts of soul and spirit. It exposes the hidden desires and thoughts of the human heart and passes judgment on them. This gives the meaning, “Reading the Bible is dangerous,” a completely new interpretation, isn’t it? But it is indeed true that God’s word often strikes us. And when we examine our lives in the mirror of His word, we suddenly realize that there are two sides, and they cannot be joined together. The word of God separates them, strikes home. And we must decide on which side we want to stand. On the side of the word and the will of God. Or do we want to make some kind of mixture, because that feels much easier? I am not saying this arr

Also, Griffer zu Plan B, Nettigkeiten. Was darf mich der Glaube kosten? Auch vom Ansehen her, beruflich, wirtschaftlich. Was darf es mich wirtschaftlich kosten?
