Forgiveness is not a one-time act of forgetting or excusing, but an ongoing process in which one releases the other person from guilt and leaves the right to justice to God, without having to tolerate toxic relationships.
The sermon addresses the topic of forgiveness through an Aramaic interpretation of the Lord's Prayer. The central idea is that forgiveness in the Aramaic sense means releasing the other person from guilt, just as one is oneself released by God. The speaker makes clear that forgiveness is not the same as forgetting, excusing, or forced reconciliation. She emphasizes that forgiveness is an ongoing process that must be repeatedly re-decided. By way of her own separation, she shows how she found a path of healing through complaint and prayer. The text encourages inviting God into the pain and leaving him the right to justice. At the same time, boundaries are set: forgiveness does not mean tolerating toxic relationships.

Yes, in a way, I just thought about that song that being faithful means to me, I believe I have always preached on the topic of territory the last few times. Exactly, that seems to be what God has laid on my heart. And so it will also be about that again today. I want to take you along into my own insights and discoveries from the summer. I was again this year at the Jesus Freak Stock Festival and there I was at a seminar by a friend who offered a prayer meditation on the Lord's Prayer. And I was surprised, quite surprised. Because the resistances that I have with some of these petitions, she was able to dissolve them. There is a book, I ordered it, it is called Eight Tunings into God, Jesus and his original message in the Aramaic Lord's Prayer. When I received it, I thought at first, which Isoterek publishing house is this from, please. It has been so enriching for me, because it was about perceiving that Martin Luther translated the Lord's Prayer into his culture, in his time, into his language. And that the Aramaic, of which I have zero knowledge, played little role at some points. And that is why I found it so interesting, to be taken along into the way in which Jesus actually guided the friends back then to go into conversation with God. I want to particularly take you along into one passage today, where I always get stuck when we pray it in the service, forgive us our debt and forgive us our debtors. The very first, or the very first tuning into this prayer is that Jesus once clearly puts it on the point, you no longer need mediators, you don't need a priest, you don't need a pastor, you can speak directly with God, and in a way in which you would speak with a loving parent. And in the Aramaic, the very first word is Abba. Now I come back briefly to Martin Luther. He translated this term with God, the God gladly. In the Aramaic there is no gender at that point, but it is about the attributes of God. Naber, loving, kind and friendly, a parent who is truly turned toward us. Some of us may not have experienced that, and therefore it may already be a challenge for you at that point to see God that way. And I think that you may be very clear and honest with this God, with this Abba, Daddy, Papa, Mama, Mami, that it is difficult for you. Forgive us our debt, as we also forgive our debtors. That is what we pray. What is the Aramaic understanding when we pray, forgive us our debt. It is essentially about being relieved of our transgressions. That can be guilt. However, it can also simply be a mistake, an error, an injustice that we have committed toward another. I remember one or the other situation where I was very unfair to my children as a mother. That can be it too. So, to be relieved of our transgressions. It becomes more difficult then, as we also have freed our debtors. The Aramaic understanding is, I let the other experience the same freedom from their mistakes and imperfections as I have experienced it. What does that mean for our everyday life? I suspect that each of us here has made the experience with this concept of forgiveness in their relationships. Because forgiveness is part of our relationship experience. So, for example, I in my role as a mother, if I was unfair to my child, then I need the awareness that I was unfair, that I made a mistake, that I was wrong in my judgment and then the awareness of forgiveness. Because if I want to live living relationships, dynamic, loving, then I have to in some way
and manner of having this awareness, in order to also be able to practically learn forgiveness. I have found a term or a sentence that I find absolutely beautiful. Someone once said, forgiveness is like the oxygen of the Kingdom of God. Something we breathe in and breathe out again. And Jesus spoke an incredible amount about the topic of forgiveness and quite honestly. I find some of it really unfair. Primarily, forgiveness is more about nurturing the relationship with God. And bringing to him what burdens us, so that he can remove the obstacles that keep us from fellowship with him and also from the connectedness and closeness with others. So that we can have the full life. However, I have the impression that in our culture, and especially in this Christian bubble, what forgiveness is, is explained in very different ways. Some good and some less helpful, even bad. And therefore I have thought about what helps me personally to think a bit more intensively about forgiveness. And I therefore thought, perhaps I want to take the path of what forgiveness is not. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting the past. Perhaps you know this proverb, forgive and forget. Or I have experienced a wrong and I am told, oh, don't make such a fuss. Well, he didn't mean it that way. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we humans are called to remember. We are called by God to remember. Do not forget what I have done for you for good. Consider how I have worked in your story. That is the reality in which we live. We have access to our memories. And forgive and forget seems for this reason to be absolutely impossible again and again. And at the same time we hear that our faith is supposed to give us exactly the ability to do this. And yet I feel bad because it often does not succeed for me. Because I am not a computer whose hard drive can be deleted. I think that we should acknowledge that remembering will be part of the path to forgiveness. And that the memory, however, does not have to hold us captive. Forgive does not mean that we must forget. Forgiveness does not mean pretending that we have not been hurt by someone or by something. And it also does not mean that we must excuse or approve of a certain behavior. We are allowed to feel anger, grief, hurt. And at the same time, forgiveness opens the possibility that our future and our circumstances are not determined by this experience. Because we as humans, who live in the reality of God's presence, get access to much more than our feelings. We get access to wisdom and to God's knowledge. Forgiveness opens in us the space to invite God's Spirit and thereby to feel how he can accompany us in our pain. Forgiveness does not excuse sinful behavior or force reconciliation. There are things that are definitely sinful and that I may continue to name as such despite forgiveness. I remembered the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who in the Third Reich struggled with the question. Is it permissible to murder a tyrant? He actively grappled with whether the life of one person and the death of one person can justify the life of many. And what moved me very much is that he came to the conclusion, yes, a murder. In this case I can justify, however in the awareness that it is sin despite that and will remain sin. Forgiveness means in this case that we invite Jesus also to the place of this pain. And ask him to help us from there to find out how we can continue with this pain, with what we have experienced. Forgiveness does not mean that you someone who is toxic, that is poisonous in the way in which he relates
lives, manipulative, violent, belittling or destructive, you allow to come back into your life. Yes, we have the mandate, I'll just say that, to shape our lives in such a way that we live in peace with all people. But that also has its limits. And Paulus has already said very clearly, as far as it depends on you, try to live in peace with all people. And that does include, if it is not up to me, then I may very well recognize my boundary. And then there are people who simply no longer belong in my life. Because in a relationship, both people bear responsibility for forgiveness and peace. One more thought. Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation with someone. Forgiveness is a conscious decision. And sometimes I feel on one day, okay, I can forgive this person this behavior now. And maybe two days later my feeling tells me absolutely not. The wound is too deep, it doesn't work. So forgiveness does not happen in a single moment only, but it is about choosing it again and again. Forgiveness is an ongoing process. A quote from this little booklet. Forgiveness is the personal act of releasing the person who has sinned against me from my personal right to collect the moral debt or to make them pay back for the deed. This means that we leave the right to God, that he takes care of justice. And that is not easy. In some moments things may perhaps be black and white. And there is no in-between, no grey. And then I catch myself thinking, God, honestly, so what are you doing right now? Why does it take so long for you to give me my due? To give God the reins and allow him to have justice in a way that I could never, can set me free and pull me out of a totally burdening, affected and guilty dynamic. The invitation that God speaks is, come to me. I will act in your name. I know that for some of us here this is a rather difficult step of faith. But I want to encourage you to invite God into your pain, because it can be so freeing. I have now been in this congregation for 20 years. Some have known me since then, others perhaps for a shorter time. And five years ago a great pain broke into my life. My husband left me from one day to the next. I did not see it coming. And this very long-standing and deep relationship was all of a sudden over. And I stood there and thought, God, what is this now? What have I overlooked? What can I do? And I had very deep, painful feelings. Words were said and there were deeds that deeply wounded me. And I stood there and did not know what to do with it. And then I heard, forgive and forget. And I thought, no, that's not how it works. That's unrealistic. And then God led me into a process. I believe the first year I did not pray the Psalms of Lamentation up and down, but wept, screamed, lamented. And then suddenly something became possible, to invite God into this place of my pain. A little piece of healing, a little piece of understanding, why it came to be that way. And also for me to be clear, how do I want to shape my future? How do I want to deal with this so long-standing relationship? It is a long road, but today I can tell you, through this letting go, suddenly many things became possible. And what deeply moved me in this year was that during Easter my father-in-law was dying and I sat with my husband's new partner at his deathbed in the morning for two hours between six and seven and we talked so deeply about this family, their story, the own pains that we have experienced. And
That was so intense. If someone had told me five years ago how this relationship would suddenly develop, I would not have believed it. This is my story. Yours may be completely different. Your way of coming into forgiveness and into a healing process may be completely different. And that is right and good. You are welcome to invite God to accompany you, to learn forgiveness. A quote to close. Forgiveness is the precious attitude of a willing spirit, to learn anew again and again. Now we still have something on the slides, Willina. If they could be displayed once more, there is a small reflection question and then actually the Aramaic text. I would like to invite you to spend a minute following what you have heard. Perhaps these questions will be helpful for you. I will read them once. Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. First possibility. Let God show you whether there is something where you first admit a mistake or where you have been unkind to someone. Bring this situation or attitude before God. Second reflection question. Has someone wronged you? Speak with God about forgiveness for this person. Is that already possible or do you need something for it so that you can let go of it there? One minute. Silence. I would like the next slide with the text now. Translation of the Aramaic text. And if you can read it from the pews, then I invite you to speak it together with me. Our Father, who is everywhere. Holy be your name. Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in the universe so also on earth. Give us our daily bread from day to day and forgive us our trespasses, as we have forgiven our debtors. And let us not fall into temptation, but deliver us from error. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory from all ages into all ages. Amen.

Was habe ich übersehen? Amen.
