If We Forget, We Will Be Forgotten!

Human beings are by nature inclined to forget, and the real danger lies not in natural forgetting but in the deliberate forgetting of God, of one's own humanity, and of fellow human beings who suffer, particularly the oppressed in Gaza and Palestine.

We forget Gaza, we forget Palestine. We forget the children who eat earth out of hunger. We forget the heart-wrenching tears of mothers and the helplessness of fathers.

The sermon begins with the Islamic concept of "nisyan," according to which human beings are inclined to forget, and from this derives the constant divine call to remembrance. It distinguishes between natural forgetting caused by illness and deliberate forgetting by a healthy person. The central danger is named as the forgetting of one's own humanity, of the Creator, of the transience of this world, and of the future reckoning. The text lists concrete forms of forgetting: parents, teachers, relatives, hospitality, and sharing in the suffering of others. A particular emphasis is placed on the forgetting of the oppressed, orphans, and the unprotected, explicitly with reference to Gaza and Palestine and to children who eat earth out of hunger. The text concludes with an extended prayer of supplication for forgiveness, peace, and security. The sermon combines theological remembrance with a current political and humanitarian appeal.

If we forget, we will be forgotten! (26.09.2025) Human beings are associated with "Nisyan" by their very nature; that is, they are inclined to forget. Forgetting is the weakest aspect of human beings. It is precisely for this reason that Allah, our exalted Creator, constantly invites His servants to remembrance. "Remember!" says our Lord, remember the blessings that I bestow upon you! Remember your promise to serve Me! Remember while standing, when you are sitting, and also when you are lying down! If you remember, you will be remembered.4 If you forget, you will belong to those who are forgotten!5 Brothers and sisters! Dear believers! Forgetting is sometimes the result of a natural illness; but sometimes it is a conscious decision. The forgetting of a person suffering from a disease such as dementia or Alzheimer's is an innocent forgetting, it is natural. The true danger, however, arises when a healthy person forgets: When he forgets to be human. When he forgets mercy and his conscience. There is so much that we forget in the course of our lives… Sometimes we forget our Creator; our Lord, Who provides for us and guides us. We forget that we belong to Allah and that the return is to Him. We forget that this world is transient, but the Hereafter is eternal. We forget that we will die, be resurrected, and be held to account. We forget to praise and give thanks. And we also forget that every blessing we possess is a trust for which we will be held accountable. We forget those who raised us. We forget those who taught us knowledge and invested effort in us. We forget that human beings are a healing for one another. We forget to spend time with our relatives, to visit our loved ones and inquire after their well-being. We forget to visit one another - to be guests and to receive guests. We forget to share in the suffering of others. And in particular, we forget the oppressed, the orphans, the unprotected. We are so preoccupied with our own trivial problems that we forget the great concerns of the world. We forget Gaza, we forget Palestine. We forget the children who eat dirt from hunger. We forget the heart-wrenching tears of mothers and the helplessness of fathers. We forget our brothers and sisters who struggle for survival in the shadow of war, terror, and chaos. O Allah! Do not let us belong to those who forget! O Allah, do not let us forget our brothers and sisters who are tested through hunger and hardship! Do not let us belong to those who forget their humanity! If the world is in this state because of our faults, we ask You for forgiveness! O Allah, forgive our transgressions! O Allah, forgive our ignorance! O Allah, forgive our excess! Forgive us all our bad states and actions, which You know better than we ourselves do!6 O Allah! We ask for peace and security throughout the world - grant it to us!
