Let Us Stay Away from Instruments of Exploitation Such as Divination and Magic

DITIB Religionsamt · DITIB · 2024-11-29 · Köln · Source

Knowledge · main message Humility · carrying Community

Divination, magic, and modern interpretive arts are forbidden because they presumptuously claim knowledge of the unseen that is reserved exclusively for God and exploit the faithful.

Regardless of the name under which they are conducted, the Islamic religion has put a stop to any form of exploitation such as clairvoyance, divination, magic, cursing, and mediumship.

The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB preaching commission that warns the faithful against engaging in divination, magic, clairvoyance, astrology, tarot, numerology, and coffee cup reading. The line of argument links the human interest in the unseen with the danger of exploitation by malicious people. As a theological basis, Quranic verses and a hadith are cited, according to which knowledge of the unseen (Ghayb) is reserved exclusively for Allah. The text emphasizes that the believer should instead rely on permissible material means, trust in God (tawakkul), and remain in prayer and patience. A contemporary relevance is established by naming modern forms of interpretation and conspiracy theories as an exploitation of people's hopes and expectations. The sermon concludes with the call to learn the religion authentically from its source and to follow the path of the Prophet.

Let us stay away from instruments of abuse such as divination and magic (29.11.2024) Dear Believers! According to his creation, human beings are always interested in the unknown, the hidden, and the mysterious. This interest of humans has always led them to engage with the metaphysical. Some malicious people knew how to exploit this, which resulted in people who were drawn into their spell suffering material and immaterial damages. It must be noted that the instruments of abuse, historically known under designations such as “clairvoyance” and “astrology,” now continue their existence in modern times under the names “coffee cup reading,” “star reading,” “Tarot,” or “numerology.” Regardless of the designation under which they are practiced, the Islamic religion has put a stop to any abuse such as clairvoyance, divination, magic, cursing, and mediumship. It must not be forgotten that all interpretations concerning the future are nothing more than conjecture. Ghayb means hidden knowledge that lies outside the scope of human knowledge and is reserved for Allah. In the Noble Quran, the exalted Allah informs us that the keys to the unseen are with Him and that no one other than Him can know them,1 and that He will not disclose a part of the hidden knowledge to anyone except the Prophets.2 Our Prophet (s) warned us about this by saying: “Whoever goes to a soothsayer or a diviner and confirms his words has denied what was revealed to Muhammad.”3 My brothers and sisters, Dear Believers! Islam emphasizes that one should seek permissible material means in every matter – without neglecting the spiritual dimension. The servant of God should never abandon trust in God – tawakkul – while striving for worldly purposes, and should always turn to his Creator with patience and prayer. Therefore, it is by no means permissible to act against the prophetic path and turn to clairvoyance, magic, and divination. After all, all these practices involve lies, deception, and the exploitation of people’s feelings. Rather, it is a matter of binding oneself to persons other than Allah. Furthermore, a false belief develops that there might be persons who, besides Allah, possess knowledge of the unseen, all of which are incompatible with the fundamental principles of Islam and therefore entirely forbidden. In particular, making specific claims with the assertion of supposedly “being able to see the future” and developing conspiracy theories is nothing other than abusing people’s hopes and expectations. No belief should be given to such statements. My brothers and sisters! Let us not lose sight of the fact that the most beautiful word is the Book of Allah and the straightest path is the path of Muhammad (s).4 Let us stay away from all matters that contradict the illuminated path of Islam and are dubious. Let us submit to the divine rules of our Creator and rely on and trust in Allah in this regard. Let us strive to learn our religion from its source in an authentic and solid manner. I conclude my Friday sermon with the most beautiful word, the Quran: “And to Allah belongs the unseen in the heavens and on earth, and to Him return all matters. So worship Him and put your trust in Him, and your Lord is not unaware of what you do.”5 The DITIB Preaching Commission [1] Quran, En’am, 6/59 [2] Quran, Djin, 72/26-27 [3] Abu Dawud, Tibb 21; Ibn Majah, Tahara 122; Tirmidhi, Tahara 102 [4] Bukhari, Adab 70 [5] Quran, Hud, 11/123 2024-11-29 All rights reserved.
