Voting for the AfD: Despite or Because of the Right-Wing Extremists?

The failure of established parties may explain voters' anger, but it does not legitimize voting for a party that tolerates right-wing extremist and pro-Russian forces among its ranks; a clear demarcation from extremist content is required while maintaining democratic inclusion.

I say this: the failure of the one — the major parties — does not legitimize the brutality of the other. Just because a situation appears hopeless does not excuse losing all inhibitions.

The text analyzes the motives for voting for the AfD in the context of the 2026 Saxony-Anhalt state election and breaks down the dichotomy between 'despite' and 'because of' right-wing extremist influences. It argues that both the failure of established parties in representation and the AfD's active proximity to neo-Nazis and Putin sympathizers are simultaneously true. The author refers to specific incidents, such as the employment of former HDJ cadres and the downplaying of the war in Ukraine, to document the danger of a normalization of right-wing extremism. At the same time, the frustration of voters over social and economic grievances is acknowledged as a legitimate motive, which however does not absolve them of responsibility for voting for a party influenced by extremists. The text calls for a nuanced approach: full democratic rights for the AfD, but consistent demarcation and sanctioning in cases of violations of the free democratic basic order. It warns against blanket demonization of the AfD or blind pandering to it, and instead calls for an objective assessment of its political content and the drawing of red lines when it comes to hatred and violence.

Politics Opinion Voting for the AfD: Despite or because of the far-right? The AfD is also voted for because established parties have squandered trust. At the same time, far-right extremists, antisemites, and Putin sympathizers exert influence within it. Both are simultaneously true. However, this does not automatically make those who vote for the AfD neo-Nazis, nor does it absolve them of all responsibility. What is needed is neither blanket exclusion nor blind pandering. Moritz Pieczewski-Freimuth 25.09.2026 AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund during the 2026 electoral campaign in Saxony-Anhalt. Photo: Roy Zuo via Wikimedia Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 Shortly before the state parliamentary election in Saxony-Anhalt, I launched a small poll among my Instagram followers – from left to conservative. The question was: What do you think? Do people vote for the AfD despite – or precisely because of – the far-right forces, the Putin friends, conspiracy theorists, and racists within the party? The answer was split 50:50. Admittedly, only twelve people responded. This poll is, of course, not representative. It is purely anecdotal evidence. But I find the pattern of responses quite worthy of discussion. After all, in a way, both sides have their points. Dichotomous Debate Our political culture of debate is increasingly splitting into two poles. Some say: AfD equals Nazis. Others: AfD equals the product of the failure of established parties. Some say the firewall was not high enough. Others: It was through exclusion that the AfD was made big. Some say: With the “shift to the right” of the CDU, citizens were first inspired to vote for the “original” – the AfD. Others say: The tabooing of uncomfortable topics – such as political Islam – is what first granted the AfD that interpretive authority. Some say: An AfD in power would normalize far-right extremism. Others: Give them political responsibility, then they will disenchant themselves. Some say the fight against the right is the contemporary “Never again.” Others say the mass rallies against the AfD are themselves a new volksgemeinschaft formation. I say: The failure of the one – the major parties – does not legitimize the excesses of the other. Just because a situation appears hopeless does not excuse losing all inhibitions. This also applies to other unwelcome contemporaries who like to frame their authoritarian needs as “resistance” (Islamists) or who are framed that way by third parties. This is not a plea for a firewall. It is about the following: “The almost insoluble task is not to be made a fool of, either by the power of others or by one’s own impotence,” wrote Theodor W. Adorno in 1951 in “Minima Moralia.” The Representation Gap After the AfD’s electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8 percent, infratest dimap published survey results showing that 35 percent vote for the party out of disappointment, and 55 percent out of conviction. Of course, a political representation gap exists. The average consumer no longer feels represented. Symbolically significant was, for example, how AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund, shortly before election day, consumed sausage goulash and spirelli pasta with “Gut-&-Günstig” Gouda and canned cola on rattan garden furniture with his partner and friendly right-wing activists, while Friedrich Merz was shown at his last currywurst meal with elegant cutlery, served by a star chef. Here is the AfD lead candidate in a worn-out Adidas shirt. There is the Federal Chancellor in fine tweed. A gap between what happens in political Berlin and the life reality of ordinary households – not only in East Germany. Many no longer feel represented by the mainstream parties. The era of mass parties is over – especially when the CDU and SPD, not to mention the FDP, no longer reach 20 percent. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the CDU failed to clear the 5 percent hurdle. A watershed moment. Meanwhile, the AfD there rose to more than 38 percent. It is true that the SPD followed with 35.5 percent, which is, however, an exception nationwide. In Berlin, the far-left party, The Left (Die Linke), established itself as the strongest force by a large margin. The decisive election issues are social security, the economic situation, migration, crime prevention, and above all the war in Ukraine. In the East, this is compounded by the feeling of being left behind and not being taken seriously in political Berlin. In the state parliamentary elections, the AfD campaigned predominantly on federal political issues. The opposing side, however, also lacked a truly convincing offer of its own and essentially agreed that the top priority must be to defeat, for example, Siegmund and to keep the AfD small. A one-dimensional anti-right-wing fringe election campaign. As if this had not already failed in the European Parliament election or the federal election. The result is known. People are not swayed by this cheap anti-fascism unless they are presented with a credible promise of improvement in their living conditions or in their perceived everyday problems. This is especially true if their federal state is, in the worst case, even denounced as a “testing ground for angry citizens,” as Friedrich Merz did. Not merely a migration problem, but an integration problem Others would counter: The CDU has, since Friedrich Merz took over the government, ensured through its migration policy measures that migration numbers are declining. That is true. But many dangerous individuals with a migration background were born here or have become naturalized citizens – Abdul Ballout is an example of this. Deportations or rejections do not provide a solution in these cases. We do not have an exclusive migration problem, but primarily an integration problem. The Merz government has, of course, not solved this within a few months. Whether such a problem can be perceptibly solved so quickly at all is a separate question. In any case, Merz initially received much support for his statement on the urban landscape. Until he relativized it again. With this, he has established himself in the minds of many citizens as a turncoat. External factors do not excuse (wrong) decisions These are, first of all, external factors: disappointment, frustration, loss of trust, and the feeling of being overlooked. They will have favored the cross for the AfD. I understand that. But I do not agree. Especially liberal-conservatives express understanding for these motives in the case of an AfD vote. Correctly speaking, however, the same people are less lenient when people from the Muslim milieu support (legalistic) Islamism due to actual or imagined external factors – such as discrimination or anti-Muslim sentiment. Then it is said – rightfully so: Do not disenfranchise people. External circumstances do not determine things to such an extent. People must be held personally accountable for their decisions – regardless of their social circumstances. I fully agree with this objection. Just without double standards. To put it in an exaggerated way: What applies to Islamists in pinstripes seems suddenly not to apply to right-wing extremists in pinstripes. Mature voters make mature decisions The vote for the AfD cannot simply be explained as a reaction. It is a decision to vote for a party that has no qualms about associating with Hitler worshippers. It is a decision to vote for a party that does not clearly reject the Russian war of aggression and that relativizes the existential significance of this war for our security. In dealing with right-wing extremists within the party and the Russia question, the chaff is finally separated from the wheat. As stated: The incompetence of one side does not justify the bad manners of the other. No fear of contact with neo-Nazis and Russia-romanticizers A few days before the electoral spectacle in Saxony-Anhalt, an investigation by WELT revealed that former cadres of the neo-Nazi organization Heimattreue Deutsche Jugend (HDJ), which was banned in 2009, are today active in the environment of the AfD Saxony-Anhalt or in the team of Ulrich Siegmund. The HDJ stood in the tradition of the Hitler Youth and was banned due to its völkisch, racist, and National Socialist orientation. Nevertheless, Siegmund referred to persons from this circle as “outstanding people.” Whoever warns about Hitler fans in Islamist structures must equally warn about Hitler sympathizers in right-wing structures. Whoever accuses the party Die Linke of making a pact with Islamists – which it does in Berlin – must equally criticize the AfD when it makes a pact with neo-Nazis. Furthermore, there is the AfD-affiliated blogger “Aktivist Mann.” To the question “Did the Holocaust happen?” he publicly answered: “Are you Jewish or what?” Moreover, he was once photographed with the prominent Holocaust denier Ursula Haverbeck. By now I have the feeling that one would have to explain again that right-wing antisemitism also exists. Perhaps this is merely the mirror image of the fact that we always had to explain that leftists can also be antisemites. And then, shortly before the election, Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, the AfD education minister proposed by Siegmund for Saxony-Anhalt, caused a stir. In his party office, Paul Ronzheimer came across a mug with the emblem of the Russian army. Tillschneider fumbled around and allegedly did not know where it came from. Regarding the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, he merely said: “It is not our war.” Previously, he had attended Putin’s birthday at the Russian embassy. Those who looked more closely at the photo and video recordings from Tillschneider’s office could also discover a vodka-filled glass grenade and a glass Kalashnikov there. So this is supposed to be no closeness to Russia? Have the voters of this party forgotten that the Kremlin defined the post-Soviet sphere of influence all the way to Berlin? A look at Russia would suffice to recognize how little the reality there has to do with the reactionary kitschification of the country: high suicide rates, abortions, divorces, drug addiction – a society that by no means corresponds to the conservative idyll that some AfD sympathizers believe they recognize in Russia. The victim card At the same time, the AfD masters the victim card like hardly any other party. It uses it deliberately as a populist instrument to suggest: The evil old-party cartel must simply go – then everything will get better. Being a victim relieves. It shifts responsibility outward: The others are to blame. We have a clean record. One should neither fall for this nor amplify this victim narrative. A few options for action Treat the AfD like any other party. But draw boundaries where necessary and appropriate. The liberal-democratic basic order and the Criminal Code provide the framework. The AfD must receive all parliamentary access that is due to a democratically legitimized party. At the same time, it must face consequences where it goes too far. Full confrontation when Putin fans, racists, antisemites, or right-wing extremists in its ranks do what they are inclined to do: degradation of entire population groups; incitement to hatred and violence. Accordingly, red lines must be marked. The AfD is to be given right where it is right. The Earth will not become a flat disc just because the AfD says that it is round. The AfD is to be contradicted where it expresses nonsense. Would not a similar approach also be possible in votes? Why not revive the principle of shifting majorities? What is against building a gymnasium at the municipal level with the votes of the AfD? What is against passing measures against Political Islam at the federal level with the votes of the AfD? The same can be said about other parties: Stronger support for Ukraine? Then take the votes of the FDP and the Greens. Expansion of social systems? Then those of the SPD, the Left, and possibly the BSW. Work that should become worthwhile again? CDU, BSW, and FDP. And so on and so forth. This would not be cooperation with the AfD, but parliamentary substantive work. And a return to a politics in which it is again about content instead of political castles in the air. Three Milieus, Three Motives Because it cannot be proven that all AfD voters are right-wing extremists or neo-Nazis, but it must be registered that neo-Nazis are active within the AfD, I distinguish three milieus within the AfD clientele. First: the frustration voters. They actually only want to cast a protest vote. Among them may be disappointed Social Democrats as well as disappointed Conservatives or Liberals. Their statement: No business as usual. Second: the right-populist milieu. It is partly recruited from the Monday vigil protests, Pegida, or the Querdenker demonstrations, is tainted with conspiracy ideology, and distrusts established institutions. Some of them are pro-Western-libertarian in orientation, others are now fundamentally alienated from the liberal West. For large parts of this milieu, the rejection of support for Ukraine is significant. Third: convinced neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists. They are concerned with ethno-nationalism and a “Blood and Soil” ideology. Here, “Remigration” is indeed the cipher for an ethnic homogenization of the country. This milieu demands an “uninhibited” relationship to German history and a “180-degree turn in memory politics” (Björn Höcke, 2017). A certain societal reservoir – according to the Mitte Study 2025, around 3.3 percent hold an extreme right-wing worldview, while around 20 percent of those surveyed move in an ambivalent gray area between democratic and right-wing extremist attitudes – is likely to vote for the AfD not despite, but because of the neo-Nazi forces, Putin friends, conspiracy theorists, and racists in the party. As described: 55 percent voted for the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt out of conviction. The first milieu, the spite voters, must accept the accusation that with their vote they legitimize the more than dubious second and the clearly dangerous third, or at least increase their political influence. Common sense – but also the lesson from history (not a cliché and no: the AfD is not the new NSDAP) – demands distance from neo-Nazis. Vigilance is required that the latter do not become too strong. In view of the mentioned polarization, a respectful tone in dealing with the AfD is recommended, but a sharp one in substance. Not morals, but content should convince again. However, as long as the AfD tolerates Russia-romanticizers, anti-Semites, racists, and right-wing extremists in its ranks, it remains the most problematic far-right party in Europe. A Melonization is certainly not in sight.
