Constant repetition of mantras and thinking of the Divine protect the mind from the influences of the outside world and give it an unchanging center, without the need to improve external circumstances.
We too can protect ourselves, so that we are not affected even by contact with sense objects and the temptations of the world.
The text addresses the daily thinking of the Divine as a practical path to inner stability. It uses the image of shoes instead of a carpet in a thorn forest to show that one can protect oneself rather than change the world. A further comparison with perfume oil on the nose makes clear that inner attitude is sufficient to override external stimuli. The speaker refers to Indian mythology and the invention of shoes as an illustration. A distinction is drawn between the view of Advaita Vedanta (all is Brahman) and the view of Bhakti (all is God). The central recommendation is the constant repetition of mantras such as 'Om Namah Shivaya' or 'Aham Brahmasmi'. This practice is meant to give the mind a center and protect it from greed and anger. The text encourages not waiting for ideal external circumstances, but remaining inwardly unchanging.

And namashiva. I am reading something from the book Sadhana by Samishiva Nanda. From a longer chapter on practical Sadhana, practical, tangible practices. Thinking of the Divine. There is a positive path to God-realization. Ultimately, you cannot escape the world, no matter where you go. A saint once said that if you want to walk through a forest full of thorns, you cannot cover it with a carpet in order to be able to walk. Instead, a wise person will wear sandals or shoes. It is just as effective as if you covered the entire forest with a carpet. Because this protection will be with you wherever you go. In this way, we too can protect ourselves so that we are not touched by contact with sense objects. So it sounds at first like a rather specific comparison, but there actually is in the Indian mythology, there was such a king and he had, somewhere had such tender feet and he wanted to go out of his palace and at that time it was customary in India to simply always walk barefoot and he had feet that were too tender, someone said, then carpets were always laid on the floor. And at some point the king wanted to keep going and someone thought, then let's put the carpet under the king's feet and so shoes must have been invented. Good and so similar. We too can protect ourselves so that we are not touched by the contact of sense objects and the temptations in the world. If you have to walk through a place that emits a disgusting smell, you cannot stupefy the entire place with a perfume. It is enough to hold a little perfume to your nose. Then you will smell the scent of the perfume oil and not perceive the bad smell. There one could also wear a mask or something, but we do not have to change the entire exterior, it is enough if we change ourselves. And similarly, if you constantly repeat a mantra, keep thinking of God again and again and keep thinking of your master again and again, then you will be protected. A Vedantin would say, everything is Brahman, Sarvam kalvidam Brahman, satsche danandas varupoham. My true nature, being, knowledge, bliss, bhaktas will think, everything is Rama, everything is Krishna, everything is God. Connected with this, one can constantly repeat a Mahavakya like Brahma, Smi or an I stammer, Travio namas Sivaya. These things form a positive support on which the mind can keep raising itself again and again. Thus the tendency of the mind to turn toward other objects or to become agitated about everything possible, to develop greed for everything possible, will diminish, because it is given a center where one can hold on. So whatever is there, we can repeat, Om namas Sivaya or Ambhra maas, Smi, reverence to the Divine everywhere or I am the Immortal itself. And then the world can be as it will. There will always be someone who behaves differently than we would like. There will always be something where we find that our mind absolutely wants it but cannot have it. We will always have good reasons that where we are right now, that it is not possible, again and again reasons that we find for why we just cannot think of God right now. If we wait until all people are the way they should be, until the circumstances are the way they should be, then we will never get there. Or maybe we have a few days or maybe also a few weeks. It is still good to see that we make the external circumstances as best as possible somewhere. It is also good that we learn to communicate positively with people, that we do not have unnecessary quarrels. And it is good to have a certain capacity for tolerance. But otherwise we need shoes and perfume oil on our nose. And that is above namas Shivaya. And that
is always consciously aware of the Divine everywhere or Ambra-Masni. I am one with the Divine. And no matter what happens, my true self is untouched.
