The practice of regression therapy, which is based on reincarnation, is theologically wrong and dangerous, as it displaces the biblical teaching on the uniqueness of the person and the bodily Resurrection.

We consider such "therapies" to be absolutely incompatible with the teaching of our Church, as they have serious consequences for our spiritual path and above all for our salvation.

The text analyses the theological position of the Orthodox Church on so-called regression therapy. It distinguishes between psychological techniques for processing childhood memories and practices based on reincarnation or transmigration of the soul. The latter are considered incompatible with Orthodox teaching, as they deny the uniqueness of the human person and the Resurrection. The text draws on biblical passages and patristic writings, in particular those of Gregory of Nyssa and John of Damascus. The occasion is a recent incident in which a hypnotherapist was associated with reincarnationist teachings. The Church warns the faithful against adopting such teachings from Eastern religions or the New Age. The central message is that Christian hope is directed toward the bodily Resurrection and not toward a cycle of reincarnations.

The Position of the Orthodox Church Regarding the Practice of “Regression Therapy” and Its Related Doctrines Heresies 29.09.2026 The Position of the Orthodox Church Regarding the Practice of “Regression Therapy” (regression therapy) and Its Related Doctrines (A theological, patristic, and pastoral approach) Contemporary society is characterized by an intense search for ways of self-knowledge, psychological relief, and interpretation of human traumatic experiences. Within this context, various psychotherapeutic and self-knowledge practices have developed, among which is found the so-called regression therapy, that is, “regression therapy.” However, this term is not always used with the same content. It may refer to techniques that aim at the search and processing of childhood experiences or other earlier events in a person’s life. In other cases, however, the so-called past-life regression attempts to lead the individual to supposed “memories” of events that are placed before their birth or even to “previous lives,” the so-called “regressive lives.” And here the problem is identified. In this last case, the practice no longer concerns only a method of psychological investigation. It is connected with a specific metaphysical conception of man, soul, death, and existence, which is related to the theory of reincarnation or metempsychosis. The Orthodox Church must address the issue with theological precision, patristic discernment, and pastoral sensitivity. It is not correct to identify every form of psychotherapy with metaphysical practices. However, it is equally impossible to consider compatible with the Orthodox faith the teaching that man has lived previous earthly lives and can “recall” them. The occasion for our present statement was taken from recent publications, according to which a couple of doctors, who are accused for the death of a famous musician, had a connection with a famous hypnotist and hypnotherapist, who practices “regression therapy.” Indeed, according to publications, the said hypnotherapist practices hypnosis for “therapy” through “regressive lives” [1] and speaks of “reincarnation” [2], which means that he has given to his therapeutic practices a metaphysical character as well. We consider such “therapies” absolutely incompatible with the teaching of our Church, having serious impacts on our spiritual journey and mainly on our salvation. Therefore, we drafted our statement to inform our faithful. To inform about the uniqueness of the human person and about the spurious teachings, which originate from the Eastern religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Zenism, etc.) and have been incorporated into the dominant beliefs of the network of the “New Aquarian Age” and contemporary Esotericism. Briefly, we mention that the doctrine of “reincarnation” or “metempsychosis” is dominant in the aforementioned religions and constitutes their basic anthropological view. According to this, souls pre-exist and are a “part” of the impersonal divine. At various times, they incarnate in human bodies, in order to “fulfill their individual karma of some of their previous lives.” This process is inconceivably long-term; the souls are in an endless cycle of reincarnations (in different human bodies) or metempsychoses (even in the bodies of animals, birds, even plants, or minerals), until “their individual karma is fulfilled.” The “release” from this “painful cycle” is achieved by the individual powers of each person (e.g., yoga, meditation, etc.). And as “release” is understood the annihilation of the “individual ego,” that is, of its existence, with the “sinking” into the impersonal “void,” which in Hinduism is Brahman and in Buddhism is Nirvana. This grave heresy negates the psychosomatic unity and the uniqueness of the human being, leading him into terrible dead ends, into illusions of “eternal survival,” and naturally alienates him from the Providence of the true and personal Triadic God, thereby depriving them of salvation. It goes without saying that this specific system of doctrines is not only contrary to Christian teaching but is understood as a clear demonic condition. And the most tragic aspect is that many believers adopt it out of ignorance. Let us see what the Orthodox teaching is in the face of these grave and dangerous heresies. The Uniqueness of the Human Person Orthodox anthropology is founded on the biblical revelation that man was created “in the image of God” (Gen. 1:27). Man is not an impersonal soul which successively uses different bodies. He is a unified and unrepeatable person, whose bodily and psychic dimensions belong to the same unique existence. In the Orthodox tradition, soul and body do not constitute two foreign or hostile realities. Man is a psychosomatic unity, composed of body (material element) and soul (spiritual element), both being sacred. This has enormous significance for the issue of reincarnation. If man is a unique person, then the notion that the same soul can successively inhabit different bodies creates an anthropological model different from that of Holy Scripture and the Church. Precisely for this reason, the Christian hope is not reincarnation but the resurrection of the dead. The Creed declares: “I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” This confession is not a secondary detail of the Christian faith. It constitutes an essential element thereof. The Orthodox Church teaches that salvation concerns the whole man and the whole creation. It does not expect the eternal liberation of a soul from the body through successive incarnations, but the resurrection and transfiguration of man in Christ. The final restoration, after the resurrection, will be psychosomatic, meaning that both the soul and the body will be saved and will henceforth constitute an indissoluble unity forever. The Apostle Paul writes characteristically: “It is appointed for men to die once, and after this the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). The earthly life of man is one. And precisely because it is one, it has unique and unrepeatable value. Resurrection and Reincarnation: Two Different Conceptions It is necessary to clearly distinguish two entirely different conceptions. The Christian faith in the resurrection is not an abstract philosophical theory. It has the Risen Christ as its center. Christ did not “reincarnate” in another body. He was raised. And the body of the Resurrection was real. The Risen Lord showed His disciples the marks of the passions and said: “Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones” (Luke 24:39). Saint John of Damascus, developing the teaching of the Church, insists that the Resurrection concerns the body and that it is a re-union of soul and body. He clarifies, moreover, that it is not a replacement of man by someone else, but the resurrection of this very same body, which will pass from corruption to incorruption. This patristic teaching stands in opposition to the idea that the soul definitively leaves one body and enters another. In contrast, reincarnation asserts, in various versions, that the soul or some form of personal existence enters a new body after death and continues a new earthly life. Christian resurrection, on the other hand, confesses that the very man, as a unified person, is raised by the power of God. Particular importance is also attached to the confrontation of the ancient Church with philosophical and religious conceptions that regarded the body as an inferior or temporary garment of the soul. The Christian faith does not view the body as a prison from which the soul must be liberated. The Son of God Himself assumed real human flesh. Consequently, the Incarnation constitutes a fundamental affirmation of the value of the body and of material creation. The model of the Christian faith is Christ Himself. Christ did not undergo reincarnation. He was resurrected. His Resurrection constitutes the “firstfruits” of the resurrection of humanity: “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). Just as He was resurrected psychosomatically, so shall we also be resurrected “in Christ” (2 Thess. 4:16). The Orthodox Church regards the real Resurrection of Christ as the center of the faith and the foundation of human hope. Therefore, the theory of successive earthly lives cannot be integrated into Orthodox teaching without essentially distorting the Christian message concerning man, death, salvation, and Resurrection. The Patristic Treatment of Metempsychosis The rejection of metempsychosis does not constitute a contemporary reaction of the Church to a new social phenomenon, as has been spread and has largely prevailed worldwide. The patristic tradition has already addressed the relevant conception. Particularly significant is the theological critique of Saint Gregory of Nyssa, who extensively treats the theory of metempsychosis and the pre-existence of souls. In his works “On the Soul and the Resurrection” and “Against Those Who Say That the Souls Pre-exist the Bodies,” Gregory exercises anthropological and theological critique of the relevant conceptions [3]. Similar critique is found in Basil the Great [4], in Gregory the Theologian [5], and in John Chrysostom [6]. The relevant patristic literature addresses metempsychosis as a conception foreign to the Christian teaching on creation, man, body, and resurrection. Particularly characteristic is the thought of Gregory of Nyssa that the theory of metempsychosis confuses the different natures of beings and does not correspond to the particular value and identity of the human person. The Pre-existence of Souls and the Fifth Ecumenical Council A significant historical-theological clarification is required here. The Fifth Ecumenical Council, which convened in Constantinople in 553, addressed and condemned Origenist teachings related to the pre-existence of souls. In the ecclesiastical tradition, this teaching was not accepted as orthodox. Thus, the Orthodox conciliar tradition itself preserved the conception that human souls are not pre-existing spiritual entities which later enter into bodies, but are created “from the very beginning of conception”; the body and the soul are created at the moment when life begins in the mother’s womb. The anathematizing texts associated with the Origenist controversy explicitly reject the conception of the pre-existence of human souls. However, for the sake of theological precision, the claim that the Fifth Ecumenical Council “condemned regression therapy” should not be formulated. This is an anachronistic formulation. Contemporary regression therapy is a different and much later phenomenon. The more correct formulation is that the Church has already rejected the theological preconditions of the pre-existence of souls and of metempsychosis, while the contemporary practice of past-life regression, when it relies on these conceptions, comes into conflict with Orthodox anthropology. What does “remembering a previous life” mean? What is the position of Science? Here lies perhaps the most important point of contemporary discussion. Contemporary research on hypnosis and memory: recall under hypnosis does not in itself constitute a guarantee of historical accuracy and requires particular scientific caution. A person can indeed experience intense images, emotions, narratives, or sensations of intimacy during a session. The fact that the experience is intense and subjectively absolutely true does not necessarily mean that it constitutes a historical memory. Therefore, we need to distinguish: the experience from the interpretation of the experience. Someone can sincerely say: “I saw this image.” However, this does not automatically imply: “Therefore, I actually lived in a previous era.” Modern research on memory has shown that human memory does not function as an infallible archive of the past. Especially under conditions of hypnosis or increased suggestibility, there is a risk that recall may be influenced by expectations, cues, and other factors. The American Psychological Association emphasizes that memories recalled under hypnosis should not automatically be considered accurate or historically reliable. This means that the intensity of an experience is not sufficient to prove the historical reality of the event that the person believes they remember. This observation does not constitute a theological argument against regression therapy. It is an issue concerning the very nature of human memory and must be taken seriously in every responsible psychotherapeutic practice. Also, “According to the Mayo Clinic, hypnosis can be used complementarily in certain cases, such as for the management of pain, anxiety, and stress, as well as in specific behavioral interventions. However, healthcare professionals often recommend other therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, before hypnosis or in combination with it. The same medical source warns that hypnosis is not suitable for everyone and that it may cause, albeit rarely, adverse reactions such as dizziness, headache, nausea, intense drowsiness, anxiety, or sleep problems. Particular caution is needed when someone uses hypnosis to ‘work’ on traumatic or highly stressful experiences from the past, as this may cause an intense emotional reaction” [7]. And “The medical literature itself shows that hypnotherapy cannot be treated as a panacea. Where there is a real medical problem, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment remain the responsibility of appropriately licensed healthcare professionals. And this very distinction gains particular significance when hypnotherapy appears alongside serious medical conditions and not simply as a complementary relaxation practice or symptom management” [8]. The distinction between psychotherapy and metaphysics The Church has no reason to reject psychotherapy wholesale when it operates according to the rules of medical science. A person may suffer from anxiety, traumatic experiences, grief, phobias, depressive symptoms, or other psychological difficulties, and it is absolutely legitimate to seek help from an appropriately trained mental health professional. It rejects unorthodox practices, and primarily those that have a “metaphysical” character, that is, esoteric. Orthodox pastoral care does not require a person to choose between faith and science. However, a distinction needs to be made between: scientific psychotherapy and metaphysical theory, the processing of a real traumatic experience and the search for an alleged previous life, psychological interpretation and religious teaching, memory and suggestion, psychological healing and the theory of reincarnation. This distinction is necessary because a practice may be presented with therapeutic terminology while simultaneously incorporating a specific metaphysical understanding. The incompatibility of reincarnation with Christian teaching The theory of reincarnation differs from the Orthodox faith in many fundamental points. a) With regard to life. Orthodoxy considers earthly life unique and unrepeatable. Reincarnation places it within a sequence of successive lives. b) With regard to death. For the Church, death is the last enemy that was conquered through the Resurrection of Christ. It is not merely a transition into a new earthly incarnation. c) With regard to salvation. Salvation is a gift of God’s grace and communion with Christ. It does not constitute the result of an impersonal mechanism of “karmic” retribution. d) With regard to the body. The body is not a temporary shell which the soul sheds and replaces. Christian faith expects the resurrection of man. Orthodox teaching emphasizes that salvation does not concern only an abstract “spiritual” reality, but the whole man and creation. e) With regard to guilt and repentance. Christian repentance concerns the real life of man before God. It does not rest on the search for supposed sins committed in a previous incarnation. The Orthodox concept of healing The Church has used the language of healing since antiquity. Man needs healing because his relationship with God, with his fellow man, and with himself has been wounded. This healing does not consist in the discovery of a “previous life.” It is connected with repentance, ascetic practice, prayer, forgiveness, the sacramental life, and above all with the communion of man with Christ. The word repentance has particular significance here. It does not mean a psychological return to the past for the discovery of hidden incarnations. It means a change of mind and orientation of the whole existence. Man is not called to return to a supposed previous life. He is called to return to God. The need for spiritual discernment The Orthodox Tradition knows that man must not automatically attribute a divine or supernatural origin to every inner experience. And for this reason the Apostle John urges: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). This exhortation constitutes a fundamental principle of spiritual discernment. It does not mean suspicion towards every psychological experience. It means that the Christian must not turn every inner image into a revelation, nor every intense experience into a metaphysical certainty. Precisely here the patristic discernment and the contemporary scientific attention towards memory and suggestion meet. Why does reincarnation exercise such great fascination? The question is not only “Is reincarnation true?” It is also: Why does the modern man need it? In many cases, the idea of reincarnation seems to offer an answer to the problem of injustice: if someone suffers today, perhaps it is due to actions of a previous life. In other cases it offers the hope that man will have countless opportunities to be corrected. The Orthodox Church proposes a different answer. It does not tell man: “You will have another life.” It tells him: “God meets you now and offers you eternal life, provided you trust Him.” Repentance is not postponed for a supposed next incarnation. The Apostle Paul says: “Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). The Christian life is unique precisely because it is precious. Every moment can become a moment of repentance, love, forgiveness, and communion with God. The Church does not deny the mystery — it illuminates it. There is one more risk. When a person confronts the mystery of death, they may seek easy explanations. However, the Orthodox Church does not fear the mystery. It does not claim to know every detail about what happens after death. It does, however, know what God has revealed: that death is not the final word, that Christ has risen, that man is not lost, that there is a Resurrection of the dead, and that the history of humanity is being led toward the Kingdom of God. Saint John of Damascus summarizes the Orthodox faith in the Resurrection by emphasizing that the very body that underwent corruption will be raised incorruptible. This is the hope of the Church. Not the restarting of a cycle of existences. But the victory over death. From the “memory of previous lives” to the memory of God Perhaps the deeper pastoral message lies here. Man often seeks to learn who he “was” in another life. The Church calls him to discover who he is in Christ. Man may know or ignore much about his past. But there is one knowledge that surpasses all others: that he is a creation of God, that he is loved by God, that he is called into communion with God, that Christ assumed human nature, that death does not have the final word, and that the destiny of man is not an endless cycle of reincarnations but communion with his Creator. A significant pastoral distinction The Church must treat with respect the person who has participated in such a practice. It is not pastorally beneficial
