Paradise is not reached through comfort or mere wishing, but only through effort in obedience, the struggle against one's own soul, and the imposition of what Allah loves and approves.
The text is an Islamic sermon on the conditions for entering Paradise. The central thesis is that Paradise is not reached through comfort or mere wishing, but through effort, obedience, and the struggle against one's own soul. The preacher quotes Quranic verses and hadiths that describe Paradise as surrounded by hardships and the Hellfire as surrounded by desires. Concrete examples are given: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, suppressing anger, forgiving, and lowering the gaze. The text also contains a reference to everyday life, in which it warns against acquiring goods through forbidden means such as usury, lying, or deception. The bitterness of obedience is presented as brief and the sweetness of the Hereafter as lasting. The preacher calls on the congregation to restrain their souls and to hope for the Hereafter.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, the Master of the righteous, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, the leader of the white-footed ones. May the prayers and peace of our Lord be upon him, upon his family, and upon all his companions. O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims.
My beloved in Allah, among the established truths attested to by revelation, reason, and reality is that comfort is not attained through comfort, that the idle do not reach the stations of the heroes, that the expensive commodity is not obtained at a cheap price, and that what is with Allah is not attained by mere wishing, but only by exerting effort in obedience, struggling against the self and its desires, and compelling it to do what Allah loves and is pleased with.
Allah, the Most High, said: "Do you think that you will enter Paradise while there has not come to you the like of what came to those before you? Hardship and adversity touched them, and they were shaken until the Messenger and those who believed with him said, 'When is the help of Allah?' Indeed, the help of Allah is near."
And Allah, the Most High, said: "Do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not known those who strive among you and knows the patient?"
Paradise, my beloved, is surrounded by hardships: the struggle against the self, patience with the difficulties of worship and its maintenance, swallowing anger, forgiveness, doing good, and truthfulness. Meanwhile, Hell is surrounded by desires. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Paradise is surrounded by hardships, and Hell is surrounded by desires."
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Good things, pleasures, and perfections are not attained except through a share of hardship, and one does not cross to them except on a bridge of fatigue. Whoever prefers comfort misses out on comfort."
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Paradise is closer to one of you than the strap of his sandal, the threads of his sandal, and Hell is the same."
And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave us an example regarding the nearness of Paradise and the nearness of Hell: "A servant may speak a word from the pleasure of Allah, giving it thought—a piece of advice he thought would not benefit much, a word he did not think would reconcile two people, or the like of that, without giving it thought, and Allah raises him in rank because of it. And a servant may speak a word from the anger of Allah, without giving it thought, and he plunges into Hell because of it." We ask Allah for safety and well-being.
Imam Ibn Hajar, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "A person should not disdain a little good that comes to him, nor a little evil that he avoids, for he does not know the good deed by which Allah will have mercy on him, nor the bad deed by which Allah will be angry with him." We ask Allah to grant us His pleasure.
The hardships that surround Paradise are that effort which you exert in acts of obedience, such as going to the prayers, fasting, and spending money. Allah, the Most High, said: "You will not attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love." And likewise, patience with the decrees of Allah, exalted is His Majesty, and His judgment, the Exalted, and refraining from desires, lowering the gaze, and guarding the private parts. These are all hardships. But if a person tears the veil and frees himself from these hardships and is able to triumph over them, then there is nothing between him and Paradise.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: "A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so is mentioned for the abundance of her prayer, fasting, and charity, and her charity, but she harms her neighbors with her tongue.' He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'She is in Hell.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, then so-and-so else is mentioned for the littleness of her fasting, charity, and prayer, and she gives charity with small pieces of cheese, meaning small amounts of things. Of course, this does not mean that she leaves prayer entirely, but rather that she is not known for exertion in worship, and she does not harm her neighbors with her tongue.' He said: 'She is in Paradise.'"
O Allah, grant us Paradise and what brings us closer to it in word or deed.
And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When Allah created Paradise, He said to Gabriel, peace be upon him: 'Go and look at it.' So he went and looked at it, then he came and said: 'O my Lord, by Your Majesty, no one will hear of it but will enter it.' Then Allah, exalted is His Majesty, surrounded it with hardships, meaning the path to Paradise, and He placed in the path trials, obligations, and exertions that require effort, then He surrounded it with hardships. Then He said: 'O Gabriel, go to it.' Then he came and said: 'O my Lord, by Your Majesty, I have feared that no one will enter it.'"
He said: "When Allah created Hell, He said: 'O Gabriel, go and look at it.' So he went and looked at it, then he came and said: 'O my Lord, by Your Majesty, no one will hear of it—about the people of Hell, about Jahannam, we ask Allah for safety, and learn the characteristics of Hell and what is in it of distress and sorrow—will enter it. That is, he will struggle against his self, so he will not enter it.' Then He said: 'O Gabriel,' or the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'So He surrounded it with desires. The path to Hell is lined with what the soul that commands evil loves.' Then He said: 'O Gabriel, go and look at it.' So he went and looked at it, then he came and said: 'O my Lord, by Your Majesty, I have feared that no one will remain but will enter it.'" We ask Allah for safety and well-being.
Allah, exalted is His Majesty, said: "And those who strive for Us—We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good."
O Allah, make us among them. It is necessary for a person to struggle against the self and to remember what Allah has prepared for the pious. For any forbidden thing that your soul desires, the alternative, with Allah's permission, exists in Paradise: in food, drink, clothing, women, wealth, or houses and palaces. Any thing that you can attain lawfully in this world, then blessed be you, and enjoy the lawful. But the question is: I want a specific thing—a house, a palace, a woman, wealth, or status, or anything—but I cannot attain it except by sinning, except by the forbidden, except by usury, except by mixing, except...
By lying, by deception, and my soul desires this thing, it longs for this thing. How do I struggle against it? By knowing that these are few, few days, and then we will travel to the place of safety, we will travel to the Hereafter, where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and it has not occurred to the heart of any human being. Thus, we can struggle against our souls and know that everything my soul desires from matters, I will attain it, but in Paradise. If Allah does not provide me with what is lawful in this world, I will not be deprived of it on the Day of Resurrection, if I have struggled against my soul. I ask Allah to guide us to the right path. For obedience and worship, and staying away from sins and transgressions, are at first bitter, but it is a little bitterness, followed by lawful, permanent, uninterrupted sweetness. For the bitterness of this world is short, and the sweetness of the Hereafter is permanent. I ask Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, to grant us Paradise and what brings one closer to it in word or deed, and to protect us from the Fire and what brings one closer to it in word or deed. I say this and I seek forgiveness from Allah for myself and for you, so seek His forgiveness, for He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. >> [Coughing] >> In the name of Allah, praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah. Brothers, please move forward and fill the gaps whenever you see that there is space in front of you, then fill these gaps. Many brothers are still standing. Dear brothers and sisters, we continue to speak about Paradise. May Allah grant us Paradise without prior punishment and without prior reckoning. Now, a fixed fact, confirmed by both revelation and reason, is that one does not attain bliss through comfort, that the idle one does not reach the ranks of the heroes, that a precious commodity is not available for a low price, that what is with Allah is not attained by mere wishes. Rather, it is attained by exerting oneself in obedience, struggling against one’s own soul and its inclinations, and compelling oneself to do what Allah loves and with which He is pleased. Allah says: “Or do you think that you will enter Paradise without there coming to you what came to those who passed on before you? Hardship and suffering seized them, and they were shaken, until the Messenger and those who believed with him said: ‘When is Allah’s help?’ Truly, Allah’s help is near.” And Allah says: “Or do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah knows those among you who strive and before He knows the steadfast?” Therefore, Paradise is surrounded by things, paved with things that the soul detests: from the struggle against one’s own soul, from patience in the face of the hardships of worship, from firmly holding on to it, from suppressing anger, from forgiving, from doing good, from giving charity. The Prophet said: “Paradise is surrounded by things that are difficult, and the Hellfire is surrounded by desires.” Ibn Mas’ud said: “Good, joy, and perfections are only attained with a certain share of hardship and effort, and one reaches them only via a bridge of effort. Whoever pulls away from comfort, comfort is lost to him.” For it is about finding rest in Paradise. The Prophet said: “Paradise is closer to each of you than the strap of your shoe, and the same applies to the Hellfire.” That is to say, in reality, one can very quickly enter Paradise, but the soul must be trained, and there is a great danger of very quickly entering Hell. Therefore, we must strive. The Prophet gave us examples by saying: “Truly, a servant speaks a word that finds Allah’s pleasure, without attaching special significance to it. You thought, this is nothing great, but for that, you have opened gates for your brother. You have united hearts, you have saved him from a sin. You did not think that. You would not have imagined that this small word you said would enter his heart so deeply, so that he then says: ‘No, then I will not commit the sin. You did not think about it, without attaching special significance to it, and Allah raises him thereby by several levels.’ And truly, a servant speaks a word that provokes Allah’s wrath,
without attributing any special significance to it, and thereby plunges into Hell. You did not think that he would therefore commit sin at the end, that he would somehow become bad because of it, that you have thereby opened the gate to ruin for him. But Allah knows best. And thus one falls into the depths of the Hellfire because of one word: "May Allah protect us." Ibn Hajar said, therefore a person should not belittle any good deed, however small, and neglect it, nor should he belittle any bad deed, however small, and fail to avoid it, for he does not know on account of which good deed Allah will have mercy upon him, and on account of which bad deed He will be angry with him. By the things that are difficult for one, efforts are meant that are connected with worship, such as setting out for the prayers, fasting, and spending wealth. Allah says, you will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love, that is, that to which your hearts are attached, what is difficult for you, what is dear to you; this shows the true love for Allah. And this also includes patience with the decrees and blows of fate, lowering the gaze, and guarding one's chastity. All these things can be difficult for a person. But if he overcomes these obstacles, frees himself from these difficulties, and conquers them, then nothing stands between him and Paradise. Abu Hurairah said, a man said, O Messenger of Allah, it is reported about that woman that she prays a lot, fasts, and gives in charity, yet she harms her neighbors with her tongue. He said, she is in the Hellfire. The man said, O Messenger of Allah, it is reported about that other woman that she fasts only a little, that is, voluntary fasting. She performs the obligatory duties little, fasts little, gives little in charity, and prays little, and gives only pieces of dried meat as alms, yet she does not harm her neighbor with her tongue. He said, she is in Paradise. And the Messenger (peace be upon him) said, when Allah created Paradise, He said to Jibril al-Salam, go and look at it, the Paradise. He went and observed it. Then he came back and said: "O my Lord, by Your power, no one will hear of it without wanting to enter it. Everyone who hears about Paradise will enter it." Thereupon Allah surrounded Paradise with things that are difficult for one. Then He said: "O Jibril, go and look at it." He went and observed it. Then he came back and said: "O my Lord, by Your power, now I fear that no one will enter it." And when Allah (exalted be He) created the Hellfire, He said: "O Jibril, go and look at it." He went and observed it. Then he came back and said: "O my Lord, by Your power, no one will hear of it and want to enter it." Thereupon Allah surrounded it with desires. Then He said: "O Jibril, go and look at it." He went and observed it. Then he came back and said: "O my Lord, by Your power, now I fear that no one will remain without entering it. May Allah protect us from it." Allah says: "But those who strive for Our sake, We will surely guide them to Our paths. And indeed, Allah is with those who do good." So if you strive, you fall, you get up again, you fall, you get up again, you return to Allah again and again, you fight, then Allah will save you. But if you let go, release, and lose hope, and dive deeper and deeper into the swamp of sin, then you are very close to Hell. May Allah protect us from it. Obedience, worship, and staying away from sins and transgressions, that is our goal. That is what we must work on. It is indeed something bitter, for the soul has a great desire for it, yet it is only a brief bitterness like medicine. It is bitter at the beginning, but its effect is tremendous. Our soul has a desire. Either you can channel this desire within the permissible
to quiet, a desire for money. For fame, for women, for children, whatever it may be. And women for men, for beauty, for affirmation, whatever it may be, you can achieve it within the bounds of what is permissible. Do so! But what if I cannot achieve it? I have a drive. I also want such a castle. I also want such a life. I also want this pleasure. I also want this fun. Please, try it within the permissible. It does not work within the permissible. Allah has not given it to me. Then know that you will experience it in Paradise. No pleasure on earth will be lacking for you in Paradise. No pleasure. Neither from wealth, nor from relationships, nor from sexual pleasure, whatever it may be. So it is only a few days that you must wait until you undertake the journey to the world of bliss, to pleasure without transgressions, to eternal enjoyment. That is what we can console ourselves with, with which we can remain steadfast. But unfortunately, we are forgetful. May Allah awaken our hearts. Unfortunately, we forget Paradise. We forget Hell. We forget the grave. We forget the life in the Hereafter. And therefore we think, if we do not have the pleasure now, no matter what it costs, I will never experience the pleasure. Wake up. Awaken your heart. Explain to your heart, no, there is another world. Have patience and you will experience everything you wanted to experience with the satisfaction of Allah. Tabarakala. And therefore, it was part of the supplication of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: "O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for every word and every deed that brings me closer to it. And I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and from every word and every deed that brings me closer to it. May Allah grant us Paradise without prior punishment and without prior reckoning. May Allah make our graves a garden from the gardens of Paradise and not make them a pit from the pits of the Fire. O Allah, make his book easy, facilitate his reckoning, and weigh his scales heavily. O Allah, let him drink from the pool of Your Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. O Allah, facilitate for him the crossing of the Sirat in the blink of an eye. O Allah, raise his ranks in Ilyoon. O Allah, admit him to Paradise without prior punishment or reckoning. O Allah, grant him the highest Paradise and have mercy on our deceased and the deceased of the Muslims. Then, dear ones, our brother Maimoun Al-Za' is still in a critical condition, and there is also a sick child or a sick son, so we ask Allah, the Exalted, to heal them with a healing that leaves no illness behind. O Lord of mankind, remove from them the affliction and heal them; You are the Healer, there is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind. O Allah, lift the disease from them and send down upon them healing, and bless the medicine. O Allah, keep them safe, O Most Merciful of the merciful, and clothe them with the garment of well-being, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer. Then there is a brother who calls for the relief of the distress of his father. O Allah, You are the One who relieves distresses. O Allah, You answer the distressed when he calls upon You. O Allah, You remove evil. O Allah, lift, O Allah, remove the distress of our brother, O Most Merciful of the merciful, and the distresses of the Muslims, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor. O Allah, lift from us and from them the trial, O Great in hope, O Wide in giving, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer. O Allah, forgive the Muslim men and women, the believers and the believing women, the living among them and the dead. O Allah, have mercy on our fathers and mothers, whether they are alive or dead, and make us dutiful to them in their lifetimes and after their deaths, O Most Merciful of the merciful. And protect our offspring from all trials, whether apparent or hidden. O Allah, admit us to Paradise without prior punishment or reckoning. And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.
