Time is entrusted to man as a trust, and whoever consciously invests it in love, knowledge, prayer, and rest transforms it into a means of salvation and connects the transient life with eternity.

The servant must make his time worth the value of salvation, for time is not possessed, but we are faithful over it, like the wise virgins, and like Joseph the Righteous, who made a plan to make use of the good years and to gather the food

The text summarizes a weekly sermon by Pope Tawadros II. of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which is part of the series "Spiritual Laws for Life." At its center is the "Law of Stewardship of Time," which is developed through three biblical passages from Ecclesiastes and the Epistle to the Ephesians. The Pope divides the time of the servant into five areas: love, listening, knowledge, prayer, and rest. Additionally, five criteria are formulated: knowing one's own time, honoring the times of God, investing time, not wasting it in sorrow, and connecting it with eternity. The sermon is explicitly directed at priests and servants, but is transferable to the entire congregation. Concrete behaviors such as listening, study, personal prayer, and calculated rest are recommended. The text connects temporal organization with eschatological perspective and emphasizes faithfulness in dealing with transient time.

His Holiness the Pope: Five criteria for time. Know your time, respect God’s timings, invest your time, do not waste your time in regret, and connect your time with eternity. His Holiness Pope Tawadros II delivered his weekly sermon at the Wednesday gathering this evening from the Papal Residence in Cairo, in the presence of a number of the Church’s bishops, priests of the churches in the South Shubra sector and their wives. The sermon was broadcast via Christian satellite channels and the C.O.C channel belonging to the Church’s Media Center on the internet. In the sermon, His Holiness continued the series “Spiritual Laws for Life,” and today he spoke about the “Law of Keeping Time,” meditating on three verses as landmarks that outline the issue of time, namely: “HE HAS MADE EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL IN ITS TIME. ALSO, HE HAS SET ETERNITY IN THEIR HEART, YET SO THAT MAN CANNOT PERCEIVE THE WORKS WHICH GOD HAS DONE FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END” (Ecclesiastes 3:11); “HE WHO KEEPS THE COMMANDMENT (IN HIS LIFE) DOES NOT EXPERIENCE ANYTHING HARMFUL, AND THE WISE MAN’S HEART KNOWS THE TIME AND THE JUDGMENT” (Ecclesiastes 8:5); “SEE HOW YOU WALK WITH PRUDENCE, NOT AS FOOLS BUT AS WISE, REDEEMING THE TIME, FOR THE DAYS ARE EVIL” (Ephesians 5:15, 16), directing his address to the father priests in particular and to the servants in general. His Holiness the Pope clarified that time is the organizer of life, and he presented the types of time that a servant needs, which are: 1. Time for love: The servant needs time to show love in his home, his service, his visits, and his sermons. The most precious gift a person can offer to another whom he loves is time, as if the person is offering a part of his life. 2. Time for listening: Merely for a person to listen to another is to offer love, and sometimes merely listening to another brings relief from their problem. 3. Time for knowledge: The servant should not stop at the starting point, but should strive in reading, culture, study, research, renewal, furthering, and observation, such as discovering energies and talents. 4. Time for prayer: Alongside liturgical prayer, the servant must have time for private prayer and retreat, and must possess the art of meditation. 5. Time for rest: The servant needs calculated time for rest, which is the art of rest, provided that the time is organized. His Holiness addressed the criteria for the servant’s time, as follows: 1. Know your time: The servant’s time is divided into three sections. The first is time for work and service, the second is time for sleep, and the third section requires the servant to care for family, friends, faith, worship, health care, and hobbies. For God does not give us a specific time, but gives us seasons and time to begin, to wait, to speak, and to be silent. “AND WHO KNOWS IF YOU HAVE COME TO THE KINGDOM FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS?” (Esther 4:14); “ALL THINGS WERE MADE THROUGH HIM, AND WITHOUT HIM NOTHING WAS MADE THAT WAS MADE” (John 1:3). 2. Respect God’s timings: God has timings in our lives, and Saint Augustine says: “God is sometimes late, but He is never late for His time.” 3. Invest your time: The servant must make his time worthy of the redemption, for time is not owned, but we are stewards of it, like the wise virgins, and like Joseph the Just who made a plan to utilize the good years and gather food, because faith combined with planning results in stewardship. “WHETHER YOU EAT OR DRINK, OR WHATEVER YOU DO, DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD” (1 Corinthians 10:31). 4. Do not waste your time in regret: Let us learn from the lessons of the past, and let a person not be a prisoner of his past or the past of others. “FORGETTING THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEHIND AND REACHING FORWARD TO THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE AHEAD” (Philippians 3:13), but rather taking lessons from the past and looking forward (to the future). 5. Always connect your time with eternity: The goal and role of every servant is that every person served has a share in heaven, regardless of the types of the flock, the big and the small, and the one with a stony heart and the gentle one. “AND I DO THIS, LEST AFTER I HAVE PREACHED TO OTHERS, I MYSELF BE DISQUALIFIED” (1 Corinthians 9:27).
