The Journey of Danny Söder - The Way to the Light

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Deutschland · Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Deutschland · 2026-03-05 · Frankfurt am Main · Source

Repentance · main message Hope · carrying Humility

Total devotion to worldly ambitions such as professional football leads to spiritual emptiness and lostness, which can only be healed through radical repentance and turning to God.

Football was for a long time, spiritually speaking, my idol, one could say retrospectively, but the content of my life.

The text tells the biography of Danny Söder, who regarded football as the central content of his life and a spiritual idol. He describes the path from amateur football in Neusüßburg through the youth academy of Eintracht Frankfurt to professional football. Söder reflects that the performance pressure and dependence on football led him into a dark phase in which he saw himself as lost. He retrospectively calls football his 'spiritual idol', which distracted him from God. The text marks the transition from this phase of lostness to the encounter with Islam and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. The narrative serves as a testimony to the path 'to the light' and spiritual salvation through faith.

I still remember when the call came from my coach: "Hey, Danny, tomorrow you're with the professionals." I then sat in the locker room with professionals, multimillionaires, who have fame and wealth and other things. So all that, which one also wants to some extent at that age, above all. And they didn't make a happy impression on me at all. But, uh, in a way, you really slide down, so I have to say, into a very dark phase. Hey, only you, God, can save me. Assalamu alaikum. The Path to the Light. Today we meet Brother Danny Söder, and he has invited us here to a sports field in Neusenburg. Those who know him know why, but we are curious about what he has to tell us today, and I look forward to the conversation today. Assalamu alaikum. How are you? Good, thank God. And you too, alhamdulillah. Yes, Danny, you have invited us here to a small football pitch, and naturally, we are asking ourselves, who are you? What was your path, your journey to our community? But of course, the first question is also, why here? Yes, indeed. I already said it when greeting you. That was the first football pitch I ever stepped onto. Yes, back then I came here with my twin brother. I think at about the age of 5. And football was, spiritually speaking, my idol for a long time, one could say retrospectively, but my life's content. Yes, so my whole life revolved around football, and here in Neusenburg it all began, in my hometown, in my home club, and yes, I also like to come here. Uh, it evokes some memories here. Um, but football was, as I said, my life for a long time, and that was the first pitch I ever stepped onto. You started at age 5. Is that... normally, it is like this, the father or uncle or someone like that is already active and naturally also wants their own child to participate. Was it similar for you? I don't even know how we came up with the idea. So either my identical twin brother and I always have an idea, and the other one usually follows that idea. Um. Exactly. And somewhere we must have picked it up in kindergarten or something like that, and the ball had always somehow fascinated us, and quite modestly speaking, we could also always do it quite well, and then we absolutely wanted to play football, and the parents naturally supported that. Definitely. Definitely. You also told something funny, um, that you thought you didn't have to go to kindergarten if you were playing football. I still remember, we were walking around here, looking for the training pitch for the little ones, and then we eventually found it, because there are several pitches here, and after training, my mother told us once, years later, that we had looked completely bewildered when she said: "Hey, get ready. Uh, tomorrow you go to school again, and so on and so forth, or kindergarten, I don't remember exactly anymore," and we said: "Huh, do we still have to go to school or to kindergarten?" I thought we were playing football now. And um, what was it like at that time, so at age 5, a man is still very, very small, and so on. Man, what was it like back then? Was it immediately okay, football is my life, or was it like, okay, at age 5, you come into contact with various things, you are also curious. It was relatively clear from the beginning. So what was nice for me back then was that I also always had a plan right away. So at age 6, I already knew, I want to become a footballer, and that plan then held until about the age of 20. And I also didn't really concern myself much with what I would do otherwise than becoming a footballer. For me, there was practically only this Plan A. Uh, we always made sure that we also did well in school and so on and so on, but one thing was clear: we wanted to become footballers, that is, my twin brother and I, and we put a lot on this card and also made many sacrifices, uh, and invested a lot of passion. Mm. May I ask, uh, at that time, how did you grow up religiously? So, what was the religious background? Yes, well, we actually attended the Christian kindergarten here in Neuisenburg, also St. Josef Kindergarten. Uh, I don’t really remember it consciously anymore, to be honest. I experience it again now, where my own daughter attends kindergarten and goes to the same kindergarten, and I encounter it again. But when I reflect on my own path, then, uh, I must say that we never really had a practicing believer at home whom we could orient ourselves by. Sunday church and such things were almost non-existent, only occasionally and very irregularly, and then we were also on the football pitches on weekends. Okay. Exactly. Uh, everywhere later in Germany and so on and so forth, and that was only culturally affiliated, meaning, one gets baptized at some point, First Communion, Confirmation, what is then also present in the Christian, in the Christian, uh, church, then Easter and Christmas, then the Mass and a bit of Easter, but it was rather cultural here and there instead of truly active faith. Was it then rather so that you concentrated more on the world? Fully, fully. So, that is why the term “spiritual idol” was very consciously chosen. Uh, I focused exclusively on football, so, more or less, I still managed to do school somehow. We also got our Abitur and so on, but it was really only football. Thought football, breathed football, lived football. I got up with the first thing I thought was probably football. Yes, that means you were completely immersed in football, so one could identify with football, fully, fully, and one also had corresponding idols and role models, like how I want to become. Yes. Uh, and that was the North Star, everything was aligned according to it. And how long did that last with football? So, you started at five, that is already early, if one already has this thought at that age, I want to become a footballer, I want to become a professional footballer, it is already strong that one has made such a firm decision at that age and set such a goal. How did it continue? Yes, I also don’t know where that comes from, but when Robin, that is, my twin brother and I, when we did something, then we always did it very consistently and also very disciplined, I would say. We were never boys who, according to the motto, I’m not coming today, I’m coming tomorrow, wanted to do anything amateurishly or half-heartedly. We then went all in on the topic of football, and for us it was clear, we also wanted to become footballers, and then we also had the luck that, thank God, we had a certain talent for it and then also realized that we belonged to the good ones, to the best, I would now say, so in the region, and then it was increasingly scouted, until we, uh, at 12 years old, I believe, played football for Eintracht from Frankfurt, and then it naturally took on an entirely different level and even more intensity. Uh, and that also shaped us very much retrospectively. Yes, of course, because you are in a very performance-oriented environment. You, uh, structure your life very disciplined according to something that perhaps also benefits me today in Islam or also in the entrepreneurial context in which I am active today. Uh, and yes, so at 12, 13 years old, it then, so to speak, became professional up to early adulthood with In 1920, I then played football for Eintracht. Yes, I sometimes wonder about this leap from, um, being a regular amateur player and so on to the professional level. Did you still have that enjoyment in football, that mindset? I mean, you do it for fun, you probably started everything for fun, but do you still have that, um, that enjoyment, or is it then just this competitive mindset, I have to become the best? Yes. Um, the truly good ones retain some enjoyment somewhere, otherwise they wouldn’t be so good. But pressure also comes in very early, in a way. I felt that relatively early on. I must also say that at some point, when it became more about performance thinking at Eintracht, I also felt nervousness before matches, which I hadn’t really had before, let’s say, here in Neuenburg. Yes, so you did have pressure, and I have to be honest, I often had matches where I couldn’t eat well in the morning because I put pressure on myself and so on. Um, so you sometimes also lose the enjoyment if it becomes very, very performance-oriented and you exclusively want to achieve something. Mm. As a goalkeeper, you then have a particular kind of pressure. That’s true. Yes, that’s somewhat true. Yes, there are always two motives: the desire to win or the fear of losing, and the goalkeeper, which I also was, um, is rather about that defensive fear of conceding goals. He has a completely different basic energy than the striker, who says, “Hey, I’ll score the goal.” Yes, that’s true. Yes. Yes. Did you already have any first contact with Islam or with Muslims during that time? Um, for sure, there were guys, um, with whom I played football who were, let’s say, Muslims at that young age. Yes, but you didn’t really notice that. Personally, I didn’t notice who had which belief, or I also witnessed little, um, um, any spiritual practice, um. The only thing you would occasionally notice was that some other football teammates didn’t eat pork or something like that, when there were any tournaments or something like that. But, to be honest, you hardly thought about that at that age. Yes. Okay. And then from age 12, it went, um, to Eintracht. Exactly. And, um, yes, you had mentioned that things became a bit, um, more intense there. You naturally became a bit more performance-oriented. You made it all the way to the first division with Eintracht, right? Yes, so at some point, when you get old enough, at 17 I played in the U17 Bundesliga, and then you can imagine it like it is with the men’s teams. So you play against all those clubs that you also know from the Bundesliga. Yes, and we actually had the luck of having a very good team and even won the German championship in the U17 back then in the final against Bayer Leverkusen. The home game here in Frankfurt, um, was actually the final. Um, and exactly, then it always continues, and I then, um, um, played up to the U23 at Eintracht and also had the luck to participate in the professional training operations, but I never received any appearances there. So I always played in the U-Bundesliga, U17, U19, or U23. Yes, but I never had any professional appearances myself. But you were there, right? And you experienced the daily life of a professional. Experienced it. Exactly. Did it continue then, was it like that? Was that the moment for you? Okay, that’s it. Now I have reached my goal and that is what I wanted, football, and of course you want to keep improving and so on. Yes, but it was the football area. Yes, completely. So, I still remember when the call came from my coach: “Hey, Danny, tomorrow you are you with the professionals." And you only know the professionals from television, and there a childhood dream comes true to some extent, and I still know exactly where I was standing when I received the call, and you definitely felt that all those years of training and so on and so forth were for this moment, and it is now worth it, or it is beginning to be worth it, but you had still not reached the goal, because you did not yet have the professional contract, and if you are already there, then of course you want to see it through completely and also become a professional. But, it was naturally a very, very exciting time at that moment back then, to be allowed to train regularly there and to prove yourself there in training. It is probably also like that there, you then have this competitive spirit, you have your colleagues, but they are at the same time competitors within a certain framework. That is the paradox of football, of team sports. Your guys are your colleagues. Yes. But also somewhere your competitors, because they compete with you for those last professional spots. Yes, and as I said, you learn a lot there. Discipline, you also learn to deal with pressure. But at the moment when I was then allowed to train with the professionals, the hierarchy is already relatively clear. Then you are the young man who first has to prove himself, who is then naturally also the only one who sees the other players, or very few young players are sitting there, the other players, the one who carries the balls and so on and so forth. That is clear at first. But you do that willingly, and there a dream comes true somewhere. Exactly. But you are first the young upstart who comes up as a sparring partner. Yes, so to speak, you had your fulfillment there. Can one say that it was a kind of fulfillment for you, that you are now with the professionals? Yes, in that moment, yes. I must say, my worldview stopped at the touchlines, to draw the metaphor a little. You are only seeking fulfillment within the football cosmos. Yes, to be honest, I also thought that the whole world revolves around football somewhere. Today you see that very, very differently. But for the moment, I did feel fulfilled to some extent. Fulfilled, but only in the sense that I said, I am on track, so I am on the way to where I want to go. It was not that my heart had found some kind of peace or something, right? It was still a constant chasing after something, and it was also a constant uncertainty. Does it even work, what I am taking on? Mm, that is very interesting, this chasing after more and more and so on. So, it is somewhere also a healthy ambition, but whether one ever attains it, it is always also a question. Yes, when was then for you the moment when you left the field? Yes, I actually hung up my football boots around 2021, I think that was it. Why? Because I realized, that is no longer me. How can one explain that, if for about 15 years that was all? Somehow this blazing fire for football had become a half-lit Bunsen burner. So the fire had subsided, and I also no longer really believed that I would make it as this last step to professional, who is then more than just a training partner with the professionals, and was then only half-heartedly involved, and that was very strange, because everything I believed to be, this identity as a footballer, you yourself identify as a footballer and you are also identified as a footballer in your environment, exactly. All of that one then let go of piece by piece, but relatively quickly, I think so, that was about a year, slowly but surely. Did it just come about like that? It came That just happened, so the belief that it is the right thing for me. Um, well, I thought, if you keep sitting on the bench like that, for example, you eventually realize, okay, maybe they don’t really want me, or the teammates, or something like that. Yes, that was to give truth a stage; I didn’t feel that I would really get this last professional contract with Eintracht. That was naturally also decisive; otherwise, I probably would have continued, but my inner self, yes, felt very empty at some point. So, I then completed my Abitur and after the Abitur I played only football for a year, because I trained regularly with the professionals. Yes, I also trained and played with the U23, depending on the situation. I still remember feeling so useless. I also sat with the other professionals in the locker room, and I don’t want to name any names, but they were so empty. I can remember players that many of you probably also know, um, who are involved in football, who were not doing well mentally at all, and I didn’t really understand that back then as an 18-year-old, but I then sat in the locker room with professionals, multimillionaires, who have fame and wealth and other things. So all that, which one also wants to some extent at that age, above all. And they didn’t make any happy impression on me. Mm. And also my colleagues in the U23, so my actual team, where I was also in competitive matches, they were also like: “Hey, what if it doesn’t work out?” And it was all so fragile. M, you have everything, you have, so to speak, your entire existence dependent on this one, um, or on this career. Exactly. Exactly. And interestingly, from the energy, from the U23 locker room and from the professionals, there was hardly any difference. What do I want to say with that? The U23 players who wanted to become professionals were afraid of betting on the wrong horse and having to give up their identity. And the professionals, I think, also had that fear, having observed, of losing what they have. I didn’t see any truly fulfilled people there either, although they had a lot of money, although their dream had come true somewhere. I saw many empty faces in the locker room. Mm. Um, as you said, you played with a sense of emptiness. So, how did you exactly feel, if I may ask? You have now seen, okay, that is there, they are a bit empty and they, so they no longer radiate anything, but how does one feel then? So, it feels a bit, if I may say so, as if one were among zombies. Yes. Yes. Yes. That also applied to one or the other player, and even to me to some extent. Um, then at the end, and then I also set this clear cut. So I believe that one then puts oneself under extreme pressure and this pressure then ultimately becomes so overwhelming for one or the other that he realizes that what I started on this pitch, for the reasons that these reasons somehow no longer apply, that they no longer came into play, because, um, one only does it to maintain one’s identity or because one otherwise has nothing. Yes. Or because one thinks one has to do it. Um, but the fun in the thing itself was then, I believe, lost for almost everyone. And that is why you then did your Abitur alongside. Yes, so my parents had always said: “Hey, please also pay attention to school and so on.” Um, I believe all parents do that. Yes. Yes, definitely. And they are right about that. Um, but I am extremely grateful to my parents. They always drove us to Frankfurt, especially my mother drove me to Frankfurt for training and picked me up from school and so on and so forth. That would not have been possible at all, um, both to get it all under one hat. Um, but yes, I only did that to be on the safe side, right? I didn’t think I would ever need it, because I was really only in my football film. Yes. And um, that was also decisive for you stopping when you experienced those feelings and realized what was actually going on. I felt the teaching itself within me. I saw it externally in my teammates, but I also felt it myself. As I said, when the passion drops, you can no longer be as good at A. Yes. Uh, and no longer hold up as well at B. Uh, I somehow couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t keep lying to myself in a way. It had increasingly felt like a lie, and I was afraid of missing the exit. Yes, and then did you draw a line under it, or did it happen gradually, i.e., quite consistently? I then transferred again to FSV Frankfurt, who were playing in the second division at the time. That is where we also have our national team training facility. Yes, and there I played for another half a year, but also had a U23 contract, no professional contract. And that was really only half a year, and then I completely started my studies, and then um, I was out. Completely out. But do you still play recreationally now, or not at all? Not at all. Yes, at first it also hurt me a bit to watch football or to be invited to play football, because it was such an unfinished masterpiece that one had given up. Uh, and that is why I also kept my distance, mentally and emotionally, I withdrew a little from it. I also didn’t watch football as much or anything like that at first. Uh, today I still watch it peripherally. I am hardly interested in it anymore today. Yes, but um, back then I actually did it a bit as protection. M, yes, of course, you then experience again, so to speak, what you actually no longer want to experience. Yes. Yes, that is very interesting. But you also mentioned, you an

Also all das, was man ja auch irgendwo will in dem Alter, vor allem Dingen. Man, was war so damals? Lebensjahr in etwa. Also was ist so der religiöse Background gewesen? Ja, du hast dann so gesehen dort so deine Erfüllung gehabt. Also all das, was man ja auch irgendwo will in dem Alter vor allem Dingen. Was will ich damit sagen?
