How Community Serves Us | Real Talk with Benjamin Schumacher and Vanessa

ICF Mannheim · ICF Mannheim · 2026-09-30 · Mannheim · Source

Community · main message Humility · carrying Truthfulness · carrying

Christian community does not succeed through performance or perfection, but through honest vulnerability, mutual bearing, and the conviction that God fills the gaps between people.

The text is a conversation between two Christian women about the difficulties and opportunities of Christian community. The starting point is a Sunday sermon that identified fears, individualism, and idealism as obstacles to community. The speakers reflect on how the fear of judgment and rejection prevents them from showing vulnerability. They refer to the biblical conviction that God created people for community and that different gifts are meant to complement one another. As a cause of friction, they name the Fall and the resulting self-centeredness. They emphasize that community must not be understood as a performance, but creates space for honesty, weakness, and mutual bearing. At the end, they speak a blessing prayer that celebrates community as a divine gift and asks for healing in relationships.

We are all made for community, and we heard in the sermon on Sunday: "Hey, community becomes difficult because of fears, individualism, and what was the third one? Idealism. Idealism. I felt so caught in the act that this idealism actually prevents me the most from blossoming in my small group or other things. What triggered you? I really liked the point about fears. So I think making oneself vulnerable is a decision, right? I think it is somehow not easy for all of us, or at least not easy for me. Um, yes, so I found it very encouraging. Yes, I found that with fears I also recognized myself, but I somehow thought, I do like to share myself, because I have really often experienced in community how it carried me through, but I also discovered in the sermon a point that I still have a bit of the fear, oh no, hopefully it will not be used against me. So, if I now tell about XY without knowing anything about it, then in D weeks someone comes and says: "Yes, that is exactly why that and that is the way it is." And I realized, yes, these are hidden fears there. And I then also surrendered that on Sunday in the evening. Yes, there is this classic word, fear of man. I do not know if you have ever heard of it, a somewhat Christian term. Yes, but right, I know that mega well. So really this fear, what you also describe, of judgment, um, that one does not want to be judged exactly, or um, the question exactly, am I then still accepted? Am I still somehow accepted? Um, if I am really as I am? Yes, and the exciting thing is, why we are also doing this talk here, is that community is something essential. So God has placed us in community. It is not good for man, yes, that he is alone, and then he also put us together in the fivefold ministry. Pastor, prophet, teacher, all these things, and also with different gifts, where not everyone has all of them. So God is of the opinion that we need one another, and yet it is so difficult, such a friction sometimes. What do you think, why is it so? Wow, I think um, we have very different glasses through which we see the world, how we judge things, how we look at situations. So, the best example in my marriage, right, I experience that very intensely. We are both, I would say, I am more from the prophetic direction. My husband is a bit from the um, teacher direction, um, where facts and arguments count and um, what is written in the Word, and I come with my direction of yes, I feel, I perceive, and it just meets um, yes, but it becomes exciting, because I find that especially with you two um, it matches so intensely, right? So Vanessa, we have known each other for 7, 8 years already, and the prophetic is really so strong in you, which is why you also play such a big role in this church, but but since you have your husband, it also suddenly finds a more, let me say, organizing element, so that it can go even more broadly. So really good. I um, I think that I um, that community is difficult for that reason. Logically um, the Fall of Man, and there it also says that the woman will cling to the man. Um, the man will till the soil in the sweat of his brow, um, in the sweat of his face till the soil. That means, there is a kind of um, shift in focus, and then of course with Cain and Abel, envy came in, and all these things. And I believe that in relationships, that God wants us to get to know Jesus Christ through the deficits we have, and then realize, wow, crazy, I cannot do it by myself at all, and so go to the cross faster and more often. It became clear to me um, a few weeks ago, that I often think, I am in a relationship and now I must to become somehow better, or I wish that the other person becomes better, that we live better, but then I no longer know exactly where I got the impulse from, but it was no, no, that is exactly the point, that I go to the cross in order to be healed there. And that was not the uh since then I like tensions more. Yes. Yes. To realize that Jesus is enough or that he fills the gaps. Yes. that he fills the gaps that we perhaps cannot, so my husband will probably, so he will not probably, he will probably never be able to fill the things that I need or also uh my pastor either. [laughter] Yes, and that is also mega relieving for him and also for you, right? So, one has to be careful not to say: "Hey, honey, I am not enough for you. I have to go to Jesus' cross now." Yes, [laughter] yes, yes. One may also allow oneself to be changed for the other. Yes, exactly. One may allow oneself to be worn down. I found it so cool how Anekret said it, uh immaturity must be disciplined, weakness must be supplemented and then to distinguish, what is it now? Is it now an immaturity, uh may I now change myself, right? Or is it a weakness? And there I simply need the Benny who gives me a different perspective? Yes, and I believe that is why it is so good that we also talk about it. That is why it is good that you are watching the podcast and that you then perhaps go into your marriage, into your relationship, into a small group, perhaps with yes with the thing and say: "Hey, hey, I will be honest." It became so conscious for me, um, that I I have my small group on Monday evenings and I already felt exposed during the sermon, yes, I already perform a little bit, because of course I want to do it well for everyone, logical. But honestly, I am simply dead tired on Monday evenings, dead tired and no, I do not want to let myself go now, but I already somehow thought, if I can simply tell the others and say: "Hey, I am really also tired on Monday evenings. I need you there, that you shape the mood, that you are active. Uh, I will tell him tomorrow." Yes, mega. Yes, and I believe that is also somehow that is, so it builds trust again, it builds bridges, because one allows weakness. That is then perhaps also a space where other people can step into responsibility, right, or say: "Hey, I am totally up for it, to complement you, because I am right now totally joyful. I am right now totally not in the mood to fill this area where you are currently weak." Um and that moves us all forward. Yes. Yes. Yes. That is mega mega beautiful. And I find um um community is actually also something very very beautiful and desirable, where Anekret also brought up the point, uh often we choose groups for ourselves that actually serve me and I noticed, but how beautiful is it, if I can serve in the group with what I have and not simply always my perfect cripple where I feel comfortable and all these things. I believe, these things may also exist, but I believe that we also have much more strength in us to be there for others um to listen to others, also to endure their deficits, I will say it that way for now. And I found that so exciting with the Bible verses at the end of the sermon. Hey, he bear one another in love. And this James 5, verse 14 also hit me, uh where it said uh do not grumble about the others, right? Because sometimes one grumbles about the others, oh, how tedious or all these things. And now I am curious what Jesus does in my life, because I have handed it over at the cross. Yes, let's go. It challenged me, uh to open my life, um to make myself more vulnerable and to let more uh yes people in. Yes, what one hears very often is, I also need my Meetime. I need my Meetime now. What do you say to that? Did I catch you? Um, I think I am the type who, um, needs this less than other people. Yes, exactly. But I know that, um, yes. Yes, I know that very well. Yes. Yes. I found it so fascinating, the point, um, how much space do I leave in my daily life in terms of strength and time to be there for community? I then already noticed a tension within myself, yes, I want to spend a lot and even more time with Jesus. Yes. Um, I have a calling where I also like to be active. Yes. And but the, um, the fruits that I bring are almost all simply in relationship, that I need time and strength, um, for relationship. Yes, what I, what I find really striking, what you just brought up, so in that, if I, so if I create space or create capacity, so G, so I take time for people and I, um, actually think, wow, I have nothing to give right now. So I sometimes find it really striking then to notice how these people serve me, yes, so then to notice, right, it is somehow then not, or like a Smartgoup evening or a setting or I don't know, where you are with people and think, okay, now another place where I somehow have to produce and so on. Um, and then exactly. Yes, maybe, maybe we can simply be more relaxed. Yes. Um, because I believe, if we have the same culture, hey Vanessa, then you know, if we as families invite each other, um, hey, then one knows, it does not have to perform, it does not have to be the most inspiring evening of all time, but it has, but it may also be. And I believe, if we have the courage there to speak honestly with each other or have the courage to also invite each other again, um, open our living rooms or to be committed in the group, um, I believe, then truly, yes, wonderful things can arise through honesty, through honesty and also, um, through vulnerability. Mhm. Mhm. Yes, indeed, a place where I notice that the most, um, is, for example, just the believer group. Um, exactly. And gladly, one would now think, yes, wow, so people, I love you, [laughter] but, um, yes, right? So or in, in every group where you are, you are there as a leader also to serve, right? And then the topics of the people also come up, which is, yes, super nice, which is allowed. And the funny thing is, although I am there as a leader, so on the evenings, I am served the most. Yes, and that is so striking. Exactly, because we experience how people encounter Jesus. Um, and in the end it is then not something where I serve, but I am gifted the most. You do. Yes, you, that makes mega, mega sense, because it is also again such an image of hey, I go in with a role and I don't know, there is already a bit in it. I have to perform now, I have to be a role model now, I have to balance everything, I am responsible for the mood, right? And to know there, yes, I am the leader like me, I am the father at home of my wife, so of my three children and my wife, but I do not have to take on everything, but I may rely on the support of my wife, I may also take the positive of the children, how they shape the mood, um, how they may also be there for each other and actually open up a space where people can then take up space, where people find their place. Yes, I would say, we bless for community at the end. That is good. Vanessa, because you do the prayer with us, sne you. Yes, Jesus, I thank you that you, um, love community and I thank you, God, because you yourself are community in yourself and you are love in yourself, in your, um, yes, in the essence of who you are. And I thank you, God, that you created us for community. And I bless you, um, with relationships, with the ability to relate. I thank you, God, that you, um, simply, where wounds have happened, heal also or where disappointment has happened, God, I pray that you restore now in this moment, that you give new hope for relationship, for community, that is real, that is honest, that is vulnerable and um yes, that moves us forward. Thank you Jesus, in the name of Jesus. Amen. Hey, like every good relationship, we had a fly here. I don’t even know if you can cut it out, the [laughter] that kept flying in here. Hey, like in real life, right? But we didn’t let this fly get us down. Hey, until next time. Until next time. No.

Was hat dich getriggert? Also Gott hat uns ja in Gemeinschaft hineingesetzt. Also richtig gut. Muss jetzt so Jes Kreuz gehen." Yes, let's go. Was sagst du dazu? Ne.
