The Apostle Thomas embodies, through his mission in India and his martyrdom, the ideal of devoted witness to the divinity of Christ, which continues to the present day through relics and celebrations.
In this way he became the first to proclaim the divinity of Jesus Christ after the Resurrection and to become a model of personal participation in the divine-human resurrected life of the Lord.
The text presents the Apostle Thomas as one of the twelve disciples of Jesus and describes his origin, his calling, and his missionary activity in India. It recounts the appearance of Jesus after the Resurrection, in which Thomas confesses his divinity, and the Dormition of the Mother of God, which Thomas alone among the apostles witnessed. At the centre is the mission in India, where Thomas converted kings and princes to the Christian faith and ultimately suffered martyrdom. The text connects these soteriological narratives with the present-day veneration of the saint in the Orthodox Church. It describes the transfer of his relics to Edessa, Constantinople, Rome, and finally to Patmos and Chios. In the present-day context, specific churches in Greece are named that are dedicated to the name of Saint Thomas, as well as the annual celebrations in his memory on 6 October and on the Sunday of Thomas.

Saint Apostle Thomas: The fiery hierapostle of the Indians
Hagiography - Forms
06.10.2026
Aristidis Theodoropoulos, Educator
Within the holy choir of the twelve disciples of the Lord is also counted the venerable Saint Apostle Thomas, honored on October 6th, also called the Twin. Thomas was born in Judea to poor parents and practiced the profession of fisherman. From a young age he devoted himself to the study of the Word of God which, combined with his good will, helped him to love Jesus Christ and to become a faithful and devoted disciple and follower of Him. At this point it is worth mentioning that, in the intention of the Jews to kill the Lord, Thomas encouraged the other disciples to be crucified with the Savior and Redeemer Christ rather than remain in life without His guidance and teaching.
Furthermore, Apostle Thomas was the only one of the apostles who was deemed worthy to see the glorious Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Heavens, which took place in 47 AD. According to tradition and by divine economy, Apostle Thomas, being in India, was not present at the funeral of the Most Holy Theotokos. After three days, and while he was celebrating the Divine Liturgy, he was found in a miraculous way in Gethsemane, becoming a witness of Her Dormition. Thereupon he begged the Panagia to give him Her Precious Girdle, which was made of the same camel hair. Then she, as she was ascending to the Heavens, gave him the sacred relic. Thereupon Thomas went to the tomb of the Theotokos, where the other apostles were praying. As soon as he arrived, he asked them to open the tomb so that he could venerate Her body. However, inside the tomb, from which a wonderful fragrance was emanating, they found only the burial swaddling clothes.
After His Resurrection, the Lord appeared to His disciples, who were gathered in the upper room and specifically with the doors closed for fear of the Jews. Thomas was absent and when the others told him that they had seen Jesus Christ, he displayed disbelief. After eight days the Lord appeared again before His disciples and called the doubting Thomas to put his finger in His side, which had been pierced by the spear, and to physically touch Him. Then Thomas, after touching Jesus Christ, declared with frankness “My Lord and my God”. In this way he became the first one who proclaimed the divinity of Jesus Christ after His Resurrection, becoming an example of personal participation in the theanthropic resurrected life of the Lord. This saving confession of Apostle Thomas is celebrated festively on the Sunday of Antipascha or Sunday of Thomas, as it is more widely known.
On the day of Pentecost, when the descent of the Holy Spirit took place, the Apostle Thomas, like the other disciples of the Lord, received the command to go throughout the whole world and to preach the Gospel of Christ. To the Apostle Thomas was entrusted the spreading of the message of Christian truth to the lands of the Medes and the Parthians, and also to the Indies, where, despite his hesitations, the Lord Himself encouraged him to go there to preach the saving Word of God. At that time, in Jerusalem, there was a merchant named Amban, whom King Gundaphorus had sent to find a skilled architect in order to build his palace, which was to surpass in magnificence and wealth all the palaces of his predecessors. Then the Lord appeared to Amban and indicated to him Thomas as a captive and his slave, and also as experienced in the art of building. Thomas was sold as a slave to the merchant, and then they departed for the Indies. There they came to a wedding, where Thomas did not eat. Then the servant of the house struck him in the face for his negative attitude. However, Thomas answered him that for this action of his, may God forgive him, and that his hand would be torn apart by beasts as an example. And indeed the servant was punished, for a beast tore him apart as he was going to bring water from the well. The ruler of the city was informed of the punishment of the servant, who called Thomas to pray also for the happiness of his newlywed daughter. He in turn taught the newlyweds the Christian faith and above all the virtues of continence and virginity. However, the father of the daughter was enraged when he saw the newlyweds sitting one opposite the other and not together. But with the prayer of the newlyweds, the father changed his attitude and became a Christian, and then all three were baptized by the Apostle Thomas.
When Thomas appeared before King Gundaphorus, he promised to construct an imposing palace, according to the beautiful design that the Apostle made for him. For this reason, the king gave the order to give him the necessary gold to build the palace. The king left the city for three years, and Thomas distributed the gold to the poor, while daily he taught the Gospel of Christ and baptized those who embraced the Christian faith. The rich missionary and philanthropic activity of the Apostle Thomas became known to Gundaphorus, who, enraged, called him to learn what was happening. Thomas answered him that indeed he had built a very beautiful palace, which is in Heaven. Then the king considered that he was mocking him and ordered him to be imprisoned. That same evening, the brother of the king fell seriously ill from great distress and called his brother, for he was going to die. But he saw in a vision an Angel, who showed him a famous palace in the eternal Kingdom of the Righteous, which the Apostle Thomas had built. The Angel gave life to the dead body of the king's brother, who, after recovering, narrated to the king about the beauty of this heavenly palace. Then the king repented and, after ordering Thomas to be released from prison, asked to be baptized a Christian, as did his brother. This conversion of the king encouraged and attracted many others to embrace the Christian faith and to be baptized Christians.
Subsequently, Thomas went to another city in India and, with his fiery preaching, managed to attract to the Christian faith the wife of King Misdaeus and the wife of the ruler Charasius. These two women, after being baptized by the Apostle Thomas, decided to live with asceticism and self-control in their palaces. This fact provoked the anger of Misdaeus so much that he gave the order to have Thomas taken to prison. At night, Thomas left the prison by the power of his prayer and went to a house, where he performed the Divine Liturgy, while among others he baptized the son of King Misdaeus, Wazane. Subsequently, he returned to the prison. King Misdaeus, seeing that the apostolic activity of the Apostle Thomas was attracting more and more people to Christianity, ordered them to execute him by piercing him with spears. Thus, his earthly activity ended with his glorious martyrdom, which took place around 72 AD outside the city of Mylapore on the eastern side of the Indian peninsula.
His body was buried with great honors, and his tomb became an eternal source of miracles, since among other things the demon-possessed son of King Misdaeus was healed. After the healing of his son, the king embraced Christianity and was baptized a Christian. The relic of the holy Apostle Thomas, whose memory is honored by our Orthodox Church on October 6th, was transported by a merchant in 232 AD to Edessa in Syria, where the saint was celebrated as the patron and protector of the city. Later, the son of the Great Constantine transferred the relic to Constantinople, and in 1204 it was transferred to Rome along with the relics of other saints that were kept in Constantinople. Today, the holy head of Saint Thomas is kept as a precious spiritual treasure in the historic Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the Holy Island of Patmos. Since May 10, 2008, a part of the holy relic of the saint is kept in the magnificent Holy Metropolitan Cathedral of the patrons of the island of Chios, Saints Menas, Victor, and Vincent, where every year on October 6th his memory is celebrated festively. The holy relic was transferred to Chios from the city of Ortona in Italy, where the Cathedral is dedicated to the name of the holy Apostle Thomas. The liturgical honor of the saint is also significant, since 21 parish churches in the Greek territory are dedicated to his name. It is indicative that these churches are scattered both in Attica (Ambelokipi, Kipseli, Amaroousio) and in the rest of Greece (Agrinio, Larissa, Lygia of Naupaktia, Aerino of Magnesia, Xirokampo of Arta, Lygia and Saint Thomas of Preveza, Megali Volvi of Thessaloniki, Zygos of Kavala, Sounio of Xanthi, Saint Thomas of Heraklion, Neo Chorio of Apokoronas of Chania, Monolithos of Rhodes). The magnificent Holy Church of the Holy Apostle Thomas in the area of Ambelokipi (Goudi) of Athens is worthy of mention, which was laid on February 27, 1949, in the presence of the then Minister of National Education and Religion Konstantinos Tsatsos, and was inaugurated on November 12, 1978, under the late Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Seraphim, and with the participation of the Bishops of Aulonos, Pantaleimon, and of Diavleia (later of Trikkai and Stagion), Alexios. This spacious and imposing three-aisled church, of basilica style with a dome, which is included among the largest churches of Attica, was painted by Spyridon Papadopoulos, a student of the ever-memorable painter Fotios Kontoglou. It was built next to the surviving medieval chapel of the Dormition of the Theotokos, an old Metochion of the Holy Monastery of Penteli, known as "Panagia Penteliotissa", due to the treasured old icon of the Most Holy Theotokos in the iconographic type of the Virgin Guide, which is now kept in the new magnificent Church. This historic little church, in which on December 27, 1887, the marriage of Kostis Palamas took place, was renovated in 1867 and was dedicated to the Elevation of the holy Apostle Thomas at its inauguration in July of the same
year from the Archbishop of Athens Theophilos (+ 1 July 1873). Since then, it has been known by the epithet “Saint Thomas”. In 1904, it came under the jurisdiction of the Holy Monastery of the Bodiless Angels Petrake as a Metochion of the latter until 1928, the year in which it became a Parochial Church. It is noteworthy that on 6 October 1934, the first official panegyric in memory of the saint was celebrated with a litany of his holy icon, and from 5 October 2026, a fragment of the saint’s holy relic is kept. To this day, a multitude of Christians from all over Attica gathers during the two annual panegyrics of this magnificent Holy Church of Athens, which are held on the Sunday of Thomas and on 6 October, making the panegyric of the Sunday of Thomas in particular one of the most attended in Attica. In 2016, following the approval of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, the Service of the glorious and all-praised Apostle Thomas, chanted on 6 October, was published at the initiative of the Ecclesiastical Council of the Holy Church, completed by the Monk and now saint of the Orthodox Church Gerasimos of Mikrygialani, Hymnographer of the Holy Great Church of Christ. May “the star-bearer, who rose from Zion by the Divine Spirit, the renowned herald of Christ and the divine Apostle Thomas,” with his saving confession, become in our difficult and troubled times a bright guide, so that we too may be deemed worthy to give our own conscientious confession of faith.
