Healthy Christian maturation and social maturity require the conscious assumption of responsibility for one's own inner balance in four dimensions, rather than shifting it onto external circumstances or other people.

You are responsible for yourself, not your partner. Incidentally, not God either and not the devil either. We sometimes like to do that, where we then hand things over. But we have a responsibility.

The preacher Patrick Will addresses the necessity of self-knowledge and self-responsibility in Christian life. He argues that many people shift responsibility for their condition onto others (e.g. politics, partner, God) instead of taking it on themselves. As a biblical model for healthy maturation, Luke 2:52 serves, which describes Jesus' growth in four dimensions: physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social. These four aspects are interpreted as the foundation for a balanced life and healthy self-care. The text connects this theological exegesis with modern psychological concepts such as Hebrew anthropology and psychosomatics. It warns against following unconscious beliefs that lead to overexertion, and instead calls for an active, conscious leadership of one's own life. The appeal is directed at the listeners to consciously shape their own role in society and congregation, and to pay attention to the balance between the four areas of maturation.

I would like to begin with a question. Who agrees with the following statement: Self-knowledge is the first step toward improvement. Now, it also depends a bit on how you say this sentence. So, self-knowing, it is the first step toward improvement, or yes, self-knowing, it is the first step toward improvement. But who would agree with that statement? No one, a few. Sometimes one is confronted quite brutally with this. Perhaps also on the way to church, one is driving a car, someone takes the right of way, curses, and thinks, you, well, and a short time later one does the same thing and then thinks, oh, maybe he did not do it on purpose. And that is also a kind of self-knowledge. In the Bible, we are repeatedly called to self-knowledge, for example by Jesus in Matthew 7. What do you see the splinter in your brother’s eye and do not notice the beam? His motto is, after all, an end to blaming others, and the invitation to self-knowledge. We have many such passages, for example also Proverbs 3:7, Fear the Lord and turn away from evil, or the annual Bible verse for 2025, Test everything and hold fast what is good, all of it also an invitation to self-reflection. And I find that these passages show that we are repeatedly called by God to take responsibility for ourselves. And we usually do that every day. We make decisions, take on responsibilities, and this often goes hand in hand with the topic of self-care. So today you go out the door and say, okay, I will put on shoes, it is better than going barefoot. Or it is raining outside, I will put on a jacket, or I need to go to the toilet, so I go to the toilet. So we make a lot of decisions every day, over 30,000, where we take care of ourselves and take responsibility. But there are also areas where we do not have responsibility. For example, I do not have the responsibility to ask my seatmate, do you need to go to the toilet, or do you also have a rain jacket with you, and so on, because that is no longer our responsibility. There is an exception with children. The younger they are, the more responsibility we must take on for them. Incidentally, also again for people who are getting old, who are getting even older, where this topic also comes into play. How can I share the responsibility there and take on a bit more responsibility for my parents? But then there are also points where we do not take responsibility and push it away. For example, man, I am so stressed, the children, they get on my nerves so much. Or the congregation, they want so much from me. And one makes others responsible for one’s own state. This is, by the way, very popular, today there is an election in Saxony-Anhalt. And I recently spoke with someone and he said, well, this rather rough treatment or this Rampele-Line, as it is called, that has been done, the Lefts did that 20 years ago, so we can do it too. With the difference that we should actually come from a value context, and therefore that is no justification. And also during the storming of the Capitol, it was said, this is because of election fraud. So one does not take responsibility for oneself, but even shifts it to others. And this is also very clearly visible in the Bible, on the first pages. Adam, it was not me. Or Hagar and Sarai and Abraham, this interesting story, where it is repeatedly said, it was not me, it was him, it was her, and so on. How does that come about? And how can we lead a life ourselves where we take good care of ourselves, where we guide ourselves well, for that is necessary in our time. Does God want that? Yes, he wants that. And how should we do that? We all know the most important commandment, love God, and your neighbor as yourself. And I believe that God also cares about us having a healthy life balance to find, and this is indeed connected to this commandment. In my first position as a pastor on the Bergstraße, I gave a great deal, was very enthusiastic, which was also good for them, as a pastor to give a lot, and so on. And then I had someone in the church leadership who was always difficult. And he would occasionally criticize me and so on. And it was once again the day in the church leadership meeting where I was criticized. And I was a newly appointed minister at the time, and then I did not assert myself, because I thought about what the employing bodies would think, and so on. But internally, I always said yes a lot on the outside, but in reality, I was truly annoyed. And that was once again such a situation. And then the Spirit of God spoke to me, at least I think so, I have not experienced this very often, but I said something like, I am tearing my ass apart here and now I am also getting criticism. And then I heard a voice, Patrick, who actually says here that you must tear your ass apart? And then I said, okay. And then I realized, that was a sentence I said to myself. And we all know such beliefs that determine our lives. String yourself along, hurry up, please everyone, that was mine. And they are all not bad, these belief patterns, to a certain degree. If they become too much, then it becomes quite unhealthy. The problem is that they shape us more than we think. And they have already become habit for us, partly since childhood. But then they often do not help us move forward and we do not truly develop. That means, this morning it is about which responsibility you have for yourself and do you also take it on? You are responsible for yourself, not your partner. By the way, also not God and also not the devil. We sometimes like to hand things over. But we have a responsibility. We do not say to God, give me something to drink. We have a responsibility for our self-care and self-leadership. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is, let me see if it works. I will just do it and you keep clicking through. I should probably turn it on, that would not be bad either. So guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. And that fits very well with the Hebrew view of man. For in the Hebrew view of man, there is an inner person, and there is an outer one. We know this from psychosomatics, the psyche, the soul, the inner and the soma, the body and its surroundings. In the Bible, sometimes the soul, Nephesh, is spoken of, or of the heart, as the seat where everything in us is contained. And we are to pay attention to that. And how are we to do that? And I find that the most important commandment helps us further. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, this is the most important and first commandment. Equally important, the second, love your neighbor as yourself. And then Galatians 5, in this the whole law is fulfilled. And interesting is that actually always with these Bible verses with these triple commandments, not double commandments, actually triple commandments, love God, the neighbor, and myself, that it always says, as yourself. So it has some kind of meaning. And we are also supposed to be pleasant people for others, in whom the light of Jesus is seen. In Second Corinthians 5, verse 14, it says, God, but his thought, which has always led us in triumph in Christ and revealed, the fragrance of his knowledge through us in all places, for we are to God a pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. And think about it, am I really such a pleasing aroma for others? Or am I rather a stinker? And what is that? And how can we develop ourselves so that we truly become people who are also a pleasing aroma? And there comes Now let us bring this sermon text into play, along with the example of Jesus. Jesus grew in wisdom and favor with God and people, as it is written in Luke 2:52. Shortly before, he was the twelve-year-old who had gone missing in the temple, and his parents had searched for him for three days. Back then, such things were common, so it was completely normal. Once people had stopped worrying for a while, Mary was truly, oh man. And Jesus said, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” And then we find nothing more about Jesus’ youth, absolutely nothing. Except for this verse. Before this verse, he was subject to them and served them willingly, and so on. And then this verse. And in this verse is hidden, in my opinion, and this is also somewhat our model at Haus Lebensquell, a model for life balance and how we can mature well and take good care of ourselves. I came to this because in my last church, Oberursel, we founded a Roy Ranger troop at some point. At that time, there were not yet so many FHG travel groups. And the Roy Rangers have these points in their emblem, and one of the four points refers to Luke 2:52. That is how I came into contact with it, and then I looked at the text and thought, wow, that is very interesting. The Rangers then say that it is about physical maturity, mental maturity, spiritual maturity, and social maturity. And then I thought, okay, if you look at it more closely, it is actually a life balance model. And that is why it makes sense to look at it a bit more closely. The Rangers always use the Greek words, so physical maturity, the age, hellechia, Jesus continued to grow in age. That is clear to us, so we get older, the body matures, wrinkles appear, and so on. But we get older, that happens entirely automatically. And then there is also mental maturity, and this is actually referred to here as wisdom, and wisdom in the Bible is not about being the most intellectually clever, but in the Epistle of James we find that it has a lot to do with character and with inner maturation, with our soul. And then spiritual maturity, so how it is in my relationship with God. It says there, and God had, that is good, according to the translation here, his delight in Jesus. And then social maturity, favor with people. And there we could insert a nice, technical term today, such as social competence. So I get along well with others, with other people, and I have a certain maturity in how I deal with other people. And I find that we are currently living in a society where we could use more of that. Where everything is becoming more and more polarized, and so on. And I believe that as Christians, I was recently at a conference of the Institute for Faith and Science, where it was about this topic, what positive things can we actually bring in. No matter where we stand politically, in how we treat each other, how we interact with one another, and what we actually have that we can be grateful for. So how do we achieve that, that we look at the example of Jesus, how can I develop in a balanced way like he did, and ensure that the light is truly in me and not so much darkness, but truly much light. Because if you want to lead others, perhaps there are also some leaders here among you, or in the company, or in the youth group, whatever it may be, if you want to lead others, you must also be able to lead yourself well. And if you want relationships or have a family, then you must also be able to lead yourself well. And it has something to do with the fact that it is an outflow of how we are inwardly, which then also shows through outwardly. And that means, of course, that I can take care of myself. And how does that work in a very concrete way? If we now take these terms and apply them to the Hebrew If the image of humanity breaks down, then one could say that here comes the physical aspect, which should be like a car tire with a rim. And what we have in the House of Life Experience is that people come to us, so some simply to take a vacation, but also many who seek counseling. And then often something is not right with the body, and the cause for that lies within, where the rim is no longer running smoothly. It also happens the other way around sometimes, but mainly it is like this. That means, something is no longer running smoothly. And I believe that as long as there is a deficit or an experience of loss in one of these areas within you, then ultimately you need help or at least a mandate to work on it and to take a look at it. So one thing is the physical aspect. To also take care of our body. And then it goes a bit further than just, that is automatically wrong, wrinkles appear, but what do I do for my body? And then wisdom, the soul aspect, that is the relationship to myself. I look into my inner self and see, how does it actually look in there? How am I doing in there with myself, with my becoming? What do I take with me there, also in relationships? And then, how am I doing with God? Is it sometimes about the relationship with God? Have I really properly gotten to know him as the loving God? I found that a very beautiful song that you have chosen, that Jesus touches me. Many people today have relatively difficult access sometimes to God, regarding feelings. And then sometimes an access to feelings, but is that then also God or is that an image of him? I will never forget that. I was a travel secretary at the Student SMD and we were on the Bergstraße already in the congregation where I then became a pastor, in the house group and we read Luke 15. And that was at the time a material from Journey to Life by John Ortberg and then it says in that material, do you believe that God really loves you, like the prodigal son? And in me, if you had asked me, I would of course say, I believe so. And in that evening, that was again such a moment where a sentence came with my head, you do not really believe that. In your deepest heart you do not believe that. And then I noticed that my image of God was cracked, that it was much more influenced by my family of origin than by God. And that is something that we sometimes also do in the House of Life Experience in pastoral care. To peel off the image of God. And there I call to mind easily like before the sun during an eclipse, what then shifts over as a shadow, and I think, that would be the sun, but it is not. It shines through a little, to clear the view again and to get to know the true God. Therefore, how are you in your relationship with God, in the maturity with God? And then social competence I have already said, the relationship to the neighbor, how are you doing with that? All of this is interconnected. And therefore we need a balance in all these areas, otherwise it does not work. Augustine once said, Love says, I want that you are. I found that interesting, or the first song, where he says, he wants that you are, as you are. And he first of all only has good things in mind for you. And I would not say first of all anymore, but always has good things in mind for you. He is turned towards you. You are affirmed and accepted. Exactly, like the child just said. God says to us, I am open for you. And therefore love often first of all also means to listen, to feel. And what does that mean for life, for this point, love yourself? What does healthy self-love then look like? I must therefore first of all feel. And at that point ask, how am I really doing in my heart, in my inner self? And I invite you to do that sometime today, to draw a power chart with these four areas. It is interesting, the new work-life balance models, very often there is suddenly spirituality included in it. Quite fascinating. It is exactly what is also included here. So, how are you in your relationship with your body, in your relationship with your neighbor, in your relationship with yourself, in your relationship with God? And it is not about always reaching the maximum, but it is about it being balanced, about having a balance. And sometimes we really do have such a hidden, false image of God, where we say inwardly, God does not truly love me. And then we perhaps encounter some, we also experience this more often in our house, such inner critics within us, who condemn us. And then there are such sentences, you do not give enough, you do not do enough. And it is not enough, for example. What does God say? Jesus says, my Father makes the sun rise and God in the numbers read, over the righteous and the unrighteous. Rain and sun even everyone gets. Or Jesus' miracle leg makes wine for a party or tens of thousands of euros for this perfume, which is used for him. Adam and Eve he places in a garden and not in a bad workplace with overtime, whatever. Often we treat ourselves worse than God treats us. And God is often more gracious with us than we are with ourselves. And God likes to give. The best is anyway, I find, for free. We are over sun, water, nature, in Austria. Madness, to see the mountains like that. God is not narrow, he makes our life wide, not desolate. So therefore ask yourself, how am I doing? Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. That is a call that Salome gives us. And I would even say, it is good if you do not only ask yourself, how am I doing? Perhaps also now after the church service or in the house group. Then someone asks, how are you really doing? Because do you know that? How are you? Once in the congregation, I came in this morning. One question. And Patrick, how are you doing? Ah, not so good. Oh, you are fine! So this formula, that we have. Then you, set someone asked and also yourself, how am I really doing? And then we already notice that it is not so without. And there I need a space where I may say that protected. And I also hope that your congregation, and it is such a wish for all congregations, where I go, that they have spaces where I may be weak. Where I may be honest. May say how I am really doing. You cannot be hard on yourself, without then also being hard outwardly. Because that has consequences. And in this material Journey to Life, that begins with a great story, so I do not find it so great, but I found it very impressive, I have never forgotten, where a church elder, Frank, let us call him that, so he was always very, very hard on other people. Very legalistic, very hard. And no one came to the EG, who came, to address him about it, when one is in danger, how are you doing well? And there is church correction and so on, the transition, but where is the correction for this person? That it goes better for him. Therefore, how are you really doing? And we must really, our heart there, that is a command that God gives us, to pay attention to our heart. And if we are affected by such an inner critic, to deal with him, by disenchanting, what is actually going on there? And of course there is also the opposite, that there are people who say, with me everything is always super, I am rebellious and all others are stupid and they do not ask themselves either, that also exists. But it is about the balance, how are you really doing? For many people, when they occupy themselves with themselves or respectively do not do that, we still have things under which we suffer and then one resorts to substitute stories, like perhaps the next cream ice cream or a pornographic film or whatever it is. Where is the space where one one can speak about it openly and honestly and look at what is actually going on? The basic need that is not being met. We all have the basic need to be accepted, to be loved, to have closeness, to be allowed to have an identity, to be well, to have meaning, a basic need of human beings. And sometimes band-aids are okay, but if they are always there, then the balance is no longer there. I would like to conclude with a letter from Bernard of Clairvaux to Pope Eugene, who was pope in 1153. And Bernard of Clairvaux was with him in the monastery and was, so to speak, his monastic father. And when Pope Eugene then became pope, he wrote him a letter and expressed his concern, because he knew him well. I will read it out. Where should I start? Best with your numerous occupations, for their sake I have the most pity for you. I fear that, immersed in your numerous occupations, you no longer see a way out and therefore harden your forehead. That you gradually rid yoursel

Will Gott das? Ich muss also erst mal hinspüren. Was sagt Gott?
