The refusal to forgive is a grave sin that poisons the climate of the community and endangers one's own salvation, which is why believers must orient their perspective toward the grace they have received in order to let go of guilt.
The preacher Stephan Eschenbacher addresses the difficulty of forgiveness in everyday Christian life and in congregational work. He argues that one's own hurt and the holding on to the other person's guilt block forgiveness, while at the same time one's own share of the blame is often ignored. Unresolved conflicts poison the climate of the community and hinder the growth of the congregation, which the preacher describes as 'sand in the gears.' The theological basis is the forgiveness through Christ, which is meant to enable believers to forgive others. The text refers to the parable of the debtor and the warning against unforgiveness as a sin. It warns that not forgiving burdens one's own soul and endangers one's own salvation. The sermon concludes with the appeal to change one's perspective and to take the grace received as the standard for one's own conduct.

I warmly greet you all and bring greetings from Mama Nuremberg. For those who did not know, the FG Würzburg must have been founded from Nuremberg over 50 years ago, and we also just had Camisio with us. I would have recommended the bomb history to you now, but you already know it, and I returned on Friday from our youth retreat. I was with our young people in France for ten days. Now you are wondering what the old dog is doing on a youth retreat. It simply was because our pastor is currently on parental leave, and the still relatively young youth workers, none of whom had led a retreat themselves, were a bit scared of their own courage and wished for an adult to come along. I gladly fulfilled their wish. Jesus simply put it on my heart, and so I went along for another ten days, but I noticed that it takes a toll on my substance at my age. One does not shake off sleep deprivation so quickly anymore. But it was a good time. I noticed how young people take steps in faith, and one of the topics we also looked at there was the topic I brought to you today, namely the topic of forgiveness. Because everywhere we deal with people, we also repeatedly become guilty towards one another. We will always hurt each other in some form. And as Christians, we know that forgiveness is called for now, but if we are honest, forgiveness is not quite so easy for us. And therefore I titled the sermon with the question: how do I learn to forgive? Our basis for forgiveness is my first point. Jesus Christ, through his death on the cross, opened the way to forgiveness, because he paid the debt we owed, Jesus God has forgiven us. And everyone who believes in Christ claims this forgiveness personally for themselves. This forgiveness makes us ourselves free from guilt, and this freedom enables us to forgive one another. We testify to this every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer and say, forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. What sounds so simple here still causes us great difficulty in everyday life. Because forgiveness is not quite so easy for us. Who finds it so easy to say, I forgive you? On the other hand, it is a trifle. And therefore I sometimes also struggle to really pray the line in the Lord’s Prayer, because I would be lying. Because I know exactly, if I have not yet forgiven something and should forgive it, it would probably be better to pray, forgive us our debts, as we also wish to forgive our debtors. So to a parenthesis, but just cannot. We pray it, but do we also live it? Therefore my second question: why do we find forgiveness so difficult? Why is forgiveness so hard for me? I think, in order to fully grasp the mystery of forgiveness, it is important to clarify for oneself why we find forgiveness so difficult. The most common reason, from my experience, is one’s own hurt. If I have something to forgive, then something preceded it. A quarrel, a lie, a betrayal, a pressure, some kind of conflict. I am hurt because someone attacked me, betrayed me, insulted me, or otherwise did something unpleasant to me. And my personal first reaction is then first of all withdrawal. Being sulky. And I actually do not want to have anything to do with the other person anymore. Perhaps you know the thought. I will never forgive you. But in this inner attitude, forgiveness has hardly a chance. As long as my thoughts only revolve around my own hurt, I also cannot get out of this hole. I must therefore start to change my perspective. And there is another reason why we may find forgiveness so difficult, that is one’s own guilt.
Because depending on the type and situation, we also strike back when we are attacked, at least verbally. One word leads to another, and the situation escalates. And in the end, I have become just as guilty toward the other person as he is toward me. That means, an apology from my side would also be quite appropriate. But if I do not expect an apology from my opponent, then I should not have to apologize either. Or should I? So it is best to sweep it under the rug. Let us not talk about it anymore. Time, after all, heals all wounds. So forgiveness does not take place at all. Forgiveness does not take place because I do not want to admit my own mistake. But that is precisely a serious error. For not forgiving has consequences. Unresolved conflicts are a breeding ground for new quarrels. Sweeping it under the rug covers up the matter for the moment. But it continues to simmer. And it is quite irrelevant what kind of human relationship we are looking at. If injuries between parties are not resolved, the climate remains poisoned. This affects us equally among colleagues, in the family, in the house group, or in the congregation. Unresolved guilt among one another paralyzes us. It makes coexistence difficult, perhaps even impossible. And let us stay with the congregation. Nothing better can happen to the devil. Therefore, he will support it wherever he can. When we are at each other’s throats in the congregation. It becomes difficult with church growth. The reason is completely irrelevant to the devil. The best sand in the gears of a congregation is human conflict. And I say this as someone who has 16 years of the oldest service in a large congregation behind him. I could now talk for two hours about these conflicts. And this also works in the workplace and in marriage. But I will stick with the congregation. Conflicts in which the factual issue is no longer in the foreground, but has long since become a personal vendetta. Sometimes so far-reaching that one no longer knows what it was actually about. That is, of course, also difficult to clarify. Where a quarrel escalates, others are drawn in. And I have also made the bitter experience of that. Emails, at that point, with a large distribution list, are a great tool that the devil gladly uses, because we keep expanding the circle of people who are informed about it and who may then also intervene. And the larger the circle becomes, the more difficult it is to clarify the conflict. But it is even worse when things are not spoken out. Such an unspoken conflict can poison the entire climate. Let us just think of a staff circle with five employees, so a relatively small team. But what does this team do if two of the five can no longer talk sensibly with each other, if only clubs are thrown back and forth, because some unresolved conflict stands between them, but no one is willing to openly say what the matter is, that holds back the entire team. So I prefer an open quarrel, because then at least one can work on it. And then we must not be surprised if nothing moves forward and that we sometimes stand still in church work. Quarrels poison the atmosphere, camps form, one side has one in party rights, the others the other. And then there is a third group, which is often even the largest, the silent ones, who have not yet realized that there is a conflict in the congregation. And for those I am also very grateful. They then look terribly surprised when it suddenly blows up publicly, when things come to light in a church assembly or similar. And I have experienced in my own suffering how helpless one is when one tries to settle a matter, but the other party resists it
refused. Unforgiveness is a grave sin. In 1 John 4 it says, if someone claims, I love God, and yet hates his brother, he is a liar. If he does not love his brother, whom he sees, how can he love God, whom he has not seen? And then I ask myself, how can I love my brother, but not forgive him? Not forgiving is not an option; in James 2 it says, for judgment will be without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. But one who has shown mercy will be treated with mercy at the judgment of God. To refuse forgiveness to another is unmerciful. And in doing so, my own salvation is at stake if I am not willing to forgive. And that is so difficult when everyone only looks at the other, looks at the other, and accuses the other, but has no insight into their own faults. And everyone sets conditions for their forgiveness: first, this person must apologize, or first this and that must be clarified, and so on. And not forgiving has yet another consequence; in German we often say, "Don't be so bitter." And that actually has a deep meaning. For who is carrying something after whom? I carry the other person's guilt after them, because I cannot let go. If someone keeps bringing up my mistakes to me and keeps telling me that I have wronged them, that I am hurt, then that phrase has a different meaning. People are bitter, sometimes even when the other person has long since apologized, because they have not truly forgiven from the heart, because they cannot let go. Being bitter can also be entirely silent. I am angry at the other person while I carry their guilt after them. But who is burdened? Me. Because I carry the burden of guilt, for example the other person's hurt, after them. I am burdened because I have not forgiven. Yet Jesus says, cast all your anxiety on me. Let us come to the question: how can I learn to forgive? My first point: change perspective. I have taken a step back on my way, to make clear to myself what causes the anger and disappointment in me. And how this anger and this disappointment influence my actions. I have told myself, sometimes I have been so annoyed that I thought, no, I will not forgive you. And it has burned itself deeply into my heart. There, the thought of forgiveness had little chance of being thought by me at all. This thought prevents everything; it takes me captive. But in the letter to the Ephesians it says, be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. If I make it clear to myself anew what Christ has done for me, if I make it clear to myself how my life would stand if I did not have Jesus, how can I remain unforgiving? When I read this verse, it becomes clear to me that I cannot simply claim forgiveness from God for myself, while at the same time not wanting to forgive my brother, my sister. And Jesus made this clear in the parable that we have just heard in the reading. I will summarize it briefly again. Peter asked a question: how often must I forgive? And Jesus answered with the parable about a man to whom a great deal was forgiven, a great deal of debt was remitted, but who could not forgive another a much smaller debt. The consequence was a harsh punishment. And the last verse in the text says, so also my heavenly Father will treat you, if you do not from your heart forgive your brother and your sister. Peter's first question, how often must I forgive, shows us how difficult we find forgiveness. We would like to gladly...
to offset. You did this to me, and I will settle it with you at some point, that just doesn’t add up. Is forgiveness a compulsion? Who is even counting there? On the other hand, I can also well understand the question, in everyday human life, because there are relationships where I keep forgiving the other person, something happens, and I keep hoping it will get better, only to be disappointed again the next time. So that makes me tired and sometimes a bit aggressive as well. In any case, my willingness to forgive the other person then clearly diminishes. Perhaps Peter had a situation like this in mind when he asked Jesus. How often should I forgive the other person, even though I know that he will disappoint me again and again? I cannot do this anymore. But interestingly, Jesus does not actually address this question; rather, he shows us through the parable what forgiveness is truly about, namely passing on what we ourselves have experienced. The great debt that has been forgiven to us, so that we too can forgive. And I believe that everyone who reads the parable thinks about this ungrateful man: hey, that really doesn’t exist, how he behaves. I would have punished him severely too, it’s completely impossible. But if we are completely honest with ourselves, we sometimes catch ourselves reacting in a similar way. Perhaps not in a case of eight hundred denarii, but in small everyday matters, sometimes, or not. There, we obviously also do not think of the forgiveness that has become part of us. God has forgiven us because he loves us, and he wants us to pass on this love. John 13: A new command I give you, that you love one another, as I have loved you. So that you also love one another. If I focus on the love of Jesus unto death, and on what he did to obtain forgiveness with God for me, then that changes my perspective toward the cross, away from the fault of the other. And it actually applies not only to our fellow believers, it applies to all people. This leads to my second thought: take the first step. Where does forgiveness begin? Only when the other person has apologized to me? No, forgiveness begins in my heart. Namely, when I manage to direct my gaze from my anger, my hurt, toward the person, when I try to see the other with Jesus’ eyes. God did not forgive us only after we had apologized to him. If he were to wait for that, he could wait a long time. God was ready to forgive of his own accord. But of course he also expects that we acknowledge our guilt, that we confess our sins, but he took the first step. He first made forgiveness possible by sacrificing his Son Jesus for us. Because a dispute, a conflict always involves at least two parties. It is hard to quarrel alone. And in rare cases is one party completely without fault. So if I become honest with myself, then I must admit that I need the forgiveness of the other just as much as he needs mine. So it is good to do, good to take the first step oneself, not to wait for the other to come to me. As the common saying goes so nicely: The wise one yields. And there is another reason to take the first step. Sometimes I may hurt someone without being aware of it. Or the other hurts me without having noticed it. It can be a completely normal sentence that triggers something in me, which was not conscious to the other. But for me to come to forgiveness, if I do not approach him and say, you, that hurt me now. It happens to me from time to time, because I am what my Franks call a Grat-O. That is, someone who blurt out what he is just thinking. Perhaps a bit spontaneous, not entirely filtered, and perhaps also not
always in the most loving choice of words. And then it can happen that I firmly step on someone’s toes. And then I am grateful when the other person comes to me and says, hey, I didn’t find that okay just now. Then I can apologize. In the Cube 1 it says, and it is a horse, which I then have to learn again and again, dear friends, be quick to listen. But take your time before you speak, or become angry. We should become more sensitive in our dealings with one another. If I notice that someone is avoiding me, then it is good to ask, hey, is something wrong? Did I do something wrong? Did I say something wrong? And thus to have the chance with one another to clear up things. In a song it says, because the one who lives in forgiveness is the one who does not live forgiving, I want to forgive. I find that well formulated. The question still arises, what actually happens if I do not forgive? Sometimes we ask ourselves, what do I have from it if I forgive now? The other person just continues as before. So apart from the fact that we ought to be obedient to God, we perhaps still have FSS4 in our ears. Forgive one another whatever you have done to each other, just as God has forgiven you through Christ. So apart from obedience, forgiveness and reconciliation sustainably change the relationship between two people. Provided, of course, that the conflict has truly been cleared up, the matter has been clarified, not according to the module, let us not talk about it. So if you have cleared up a conflict, how do you feel then? If you have forgiven or been forgiven, what does that do to you? Relieved, free, happy, peaceful, happy. So that is how it is with me, that is what forgiveness does to me. It frees me from my own prison, from anger or even hate. I can look my opponent in the eyes again. I can love him again or at least respect him. And then we are back at holding grudges. I must lay down the burden so that I become free, instead of carrying the other person’s guilt after him, which then burdens me myself. That frees me when I forgive. And now it becomes practical. I faced exactly this challenge last September in my own family. I have two brothers, a younger one, an older one. In January 2024 my father passed away, after my mother. And now it was about dividing the inheritance between me and the two of them. My parents had drawn up a will, which stated that we would inherit a part each. No problem, I thought. And I was to be greatly mistaken. I had no idea that one can make an act of confrontation out of dividing into three parts. But my older brother handled that furiously. And how could it be otherwise? It became personally insulting and hurtful. Up to the sentence he said, I cannot trust you. And during this time I was also not well health-wise. I had a mild stroke shortly before my father’s death. And so I did not cope at all with this situation. I already got short of breath just seeing that an email from him had arrived. I clenched it in my hand so tightly that my blood pressure rose to unheard-of heights. I did not even have to read the whole email yet. I then wrote him a letter and cut off contact. My wife stood protectively in front of me and took over all the necessary communication. I was legally quite... Why am I telling this? So that you understand what has occupied me for a year and a half. I have not cleared it up. At some point the time comes. Then I must clarify it with him. But only then, when the so-called estate settlement is completed, because before that it would have made no sense, it would only have made everything more difficult. And last September it was finally time. We had a notary appointment, where the
The division of the house has been carried out. And I was treated politely. And then, 14 days later, I learned, first again in our parents’ house, because he wants to remove certain things, that I found out on Friday that he is there all Saturday. And then the brooding began. Actually, a good time for a conversation. But do I really want that? Yes, it must be done. No, it is of no use. After all, it is not clear what is moving there. All these thoughts swirled in my head. It was a real great temptation for me. I preach about forgiveness, but am I myself ready to forgive? Does it really work, what I have experienced or even earlier? I slept poorly that night. I felt a bit like Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Waking up again and again. My wife slept peacefully beside me. I had also already stayed in the house. I had also been tossing and turning with thoughts again and again. But I had already spoken about this situation repeatedly with friends and also in the house group. We naturally also prayed for it. I repeatedly emphasized that I want to clarify this matter. That was good. It gave me the necessary pressure not to chicken out. I only sent messages in a good, pastoral manner. I explained to him that he had hurt me and what had hurt me. And I explained to him that I had forgiven him. I could actually do that beforehand, but only internally. And he listened to all of this very calmly, did not say much. And quite honestly, I still do not know today whether he really understood me. But that is not important at all for forgiveness, whether the other person has understood it. What is decisive is what the conversation did to me. It set me free. I went home freed, freed from a pressing burden. Free from the feeling that something stands between us and is not clarified. Freed, also from the fear of encountering each other at any family celebrations where we are both invited. Through this, I found my inner peace. I no longer hold anything against him. Fo

Warum fällt mir Vergebung so schwer? Also am besten schwamm drüber. Reden wir nicht mehr drüber. Zeit, halt alle Wunden. Also Vergebung findet gar nicht statt. Denn wer trägt denn hier jemandem was hinterher? Wo fängt denn Verzeihen an? Nein, Vergebung fängt in meinem Herzen an. Hab ich was Falsches gemacht? Hab ich was Falsches gesagt?
