The musical dialogue between different styles and traditions, oriented toward a common spiritual goal, serves as a model for constructive social coexistence despite political and cultural differences.

could this be a model for how we live together in our country? Not only between East and West, but in general. Between the different regions, between town and country, between young and old…

The text is an address on the occasion of German National Day on 3 October, which addresses the reunification of 1990. The speaker reflects on current political tensions between East and West Germany and quotes the historian James Hawes, who speaks of two different political nations. As a counter-proposal, a musical programme of motets by Johann Sebastian Bach and Josquin des Prez is presented. The musical dialogue between the two composers is interpreted as a model for successful coexistence, in which differences remain but a common goal is pursued. The text argues that diversity and competition can be constructive in the service of a common horizon, here God's. Social values such as peace, democracy, human dignity, and justice are named as common goals. The address concludes with a prayer that asks for unity, respect, and confidence for the country.

October 3rd is the German National Day. We commemorate the reunification in 1990. “Now what belongs together is growing together,” Willy Brandt already said on November 10, 1989, back then in the euphoria of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the overcoming of the German division. Today, 36 years after reunification, the problems are rather in the foreground, at least in the political discussion and in the media. There, people talk about East and West, how different the situations are, how different the people and their mentalities. The British historian James Hawes even stated in an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau that East and West Germany are “two different political nations” [1] with a history that is very different up to the Middle Ages and therefore also regionally very different election results. What do we make of this insight, if it is true? Can we still think of a unity, a constructive coexistence in reunified Germany? The chamber choir Josquin des Préz, led by Clemens Flämig, has presented an interesting musical dialogue with today’s motet program. On one side stands the Lutheran Leipzig Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach, who embodies the peak of Baroque music. In the motet “Jesu, meine Freude” (Jesus, my joy), stanzas of the church hymn of the same name by Johann Franck and Johann Crüger alternate with verses from the Epistle to the Romans. In the face of worldly challenges, it is a joy to have in Jesus a reliable companion in all life situations and beyond death. On the other side, we hear three works by Josquin des Préz, the Franco-Flemish singer of the Renaissance, who is considered the most important composer of this time and was a model for generations of his successors. He worked, among other places, in Rome and Milan as well as in Condé-sur-l’Escaut in the far north of France. With him, text was for the first time interpreted through music and modern counterpoint was developed. Luther is said to have said about him, he is “the master of notes, who must make them as he wishes; the other singing masters must make them as the notes wish.” [2] They are both masters of their respective times. And they come together today in this motet, sounding together, into each other. As you can hear, it works. But why? Is it the commonality that makes this dialogue possible, or are it the differences? Both stand for mastery in vocal polyphony. Baroque robust emotional agitation on the one hand, clear spherical-optimistic basic mood on the other. Bach sounds in German, des Préz in Latin. Are it perhaps precisely the differences in composition technique, in interpretation, in the use of keys, in the overall mood of the respective music, that make this dialogue exciting, for us here in the Thomaskirche, for you in the chamber choir? Is it the perfection, the wonderful circumstance that two masters of their craft give their best in the service of God. Both are almost overwhelmed in the praise of God, in the expression of unwavering trust, in holding fast to God, whatever may happen. There is, despite all differences, a common goal, a common horizon. A motet is also a sacred concert: The word concert comes from the Latin concertare and means both to compete and to work together. Everyone gives their best. Dear motet congregation, Could this be a model for our living together in our country? Not only between East and West, but generally. Between the different regions, between town and country, between young and old… Very different approaches. Different life experiences and mentalities. But yoked together with a common goal? A goal that we pursue with great commitment, in our own way? A striving on the way there? Each giving their best? It is not at all easy to find such a common goal between West and East. Commitment to peace, yes. The paths to it are disputed. Democracy and human dignity. Yes, definitely, I hope that we can still agree on that. Justice for all people – a balance of equality and equal opportunity and security. A balance between the generations, the young and the old. Preservation of creation as the foundation of all future. Can the Christian faith play a role in the future of our country? As a way to find each other? Or is that passé? Both Bach and des Prez celebrate trust in God, the confidence in God’s beneficial working. In Bach, the challenges of our life play a larger role; in des Prez, one feels already closer to heaven. Bach quotes the Apostle Paul with more complex biblical theology; des Prez has more poetic flow in his voices. But they agree: God’s guidance is stronger than the adversities of life. And it goes beyond the end of earthly life. If only the people in this country could be infected by this confidence. Just as we are here in St. Thomas’s Church: We have it so good… Amen. Let us pray: God, we ask you on this October 3rd. Bless the people in this country, however different they may be. Let them find each other, approach one another, talk together, seek constructive solutions. Let them treat each other with grace and respect. Let the strong have a heart for the weak, the joyful share some of their joy with the sorrowful. Let us also welcome those who appear foreign to us, whom we do not understand. Let us not squander our freedom, our democracy, our understanding of the inviolability of human dignity. In 1989, borders were overcome, in Germany, in Europe, in the world. Preserve our chance for a peaceful, friendly coexistence. Strengthen us and our confidence that You, God, walk with us in good and in bad days. Amen. Der dritte Oktober ist der deutsche Nationalfeiertag. Wir gedenken der Wiedervereinigung im Jahr 1990. „Jetzt wächst zusammen, was zusammengehört“, so sagte Willy Brandt schon am 10. Amen.
