The Believer's Attitude in Anger

Whoever controls his anger protects his mental clarity, his family, and his community from harm, and Allah fills his heart with faith and security.

The God-fearing give in times of joy and in times of distress, restrain anger, and forgive people. And Allah loves those who do their work well.

The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB preaching commission, which addresses the believers and deals with the inner attitude in dealing with anger. The core message is that a believer is indeed grateful when good befalls him, but remains patient when something unpleasant happens and controls his anger. Anger is acknowledged as a human feeling that must nevertheless be controlled, because it weakens mental faculties and can lead to hurtful words, destroyed families, and social harm. As countermeasures, patience, taking refuge in Allah, ritual washing, changing position, and avoiding quarrels are mentioned. The text is based on several hadiths of the Prophet and a Quranic verse (Al Imran 3/134). The sermon connects inner self-control with the promise that Allah fills the heart of the one who controls his anger with faith and security. No specific current occasion is mentioned; the reference is practical for everyday life and directed at the personal and family level.

My brothers and sisters! Dear believers! Allah created this world as a place of trial. Therefore, sometimes events may occur that grant a person inner peace and joy. At other times, things may happen that disturb his inner peace and make him sad. A believer is distinguished by the fact that he is grateful when something pleasant befalls him. But he remains patient and does not become angry when something sad or hurtful befalls him. Honored believers! Anger is a human emotion. What is decisive is not to completely eliminate anger, but to keep it under control. If anger is not controlled, it weakens a person's mental faculties and makes it difficult for him to think rationally. In anger, the heartbeat accelerates, blood circulation increases, and this puts a strain on the blood vessels and the brain. Therefore, in such a situation, an angry person may utter hurtful words and make decisions that he later regrets. Sometimes, as a result of a single moment of anger, families are destroyed, enmities are stoked, and lasting, irreversible pain is caused in society. If anger is mastered, on the other hand, Allah fills the heart of the person with faith and security. This brings peace and happiness for him himself, his family, and his surroundings. Our beloved Prophet (s) said on this matter: "Whoever suppresses his anger, although he has the power to give it free rein, Allah will fill his heart with security and faith." 1 Let us therefore remember how we can master our anger in order to attain this glad tidings. Revered Muslims! When anger rises within us, we should remember that anger is from the devil. 2 In any case, we should seek refuge in Allah with patience. 3 We must not forget that regrettable events with irreversible consequences may occur if we give our anger free rein. Our Prophet (s) emphasized how important it is to practice patience especially in the first moment, by saying: "Patience is to be shown in the first moment of misfortune." 4 After we have sought refuge in Allah and practiced patience, we should, in order to completely extinguish our anger, perform the ritual washing, 5 sit down if we are standing, or lie down if we are sitting. While doing this, we should not forget the following glad tidings of our Prophet (s): "I guarantee a house on the edge of Paradise for the one who does not argue, even if he is in the right." 6 My brothers and sisters! Let us keep the following words of Allah deep in our hearts: "The God-fearing give in joy and in sorrow, restrain anger, and forgive people. And Allah loves those who do their work well." 7 May Allah make us among His servants who master their anger, even when they are in the right, choose the path of patience and forgiveness, and thereby attain Paradise. Meine Geschwister!
