Loss of faith is prevented by the congregation overcoming complacency and strengthening its own enthusiasm for faith and resilience through the uptake of questions and doubts from newcomers and non-believers.

We need the questions of the newcomers, of the undecided. Yes, even the questions of the doubters, so that we can lay our faith down behind questions and bad habits. And then perhaps rediscover it, perhaps a little differently.

The preacher refers to a study that says people often lose their faith because they have learned answers but have not internalised reasons. He argues for creating spaces in the congregation where questions and doubts may be voiced, in order to break through complacency and arrogance. As a biblical model, he points to the first church in the Acts of the Apostles, which formed a strong community through regular meetings, shared meals, and open teaching. The preacher warns against setting oneself apart as 'experienced surfers' from the 'beginners', and emphasises that the fresh questions of newcomers strengthen and make more resilient the faith of the established. He calls the congregation to actively engage with the questions of non-believers and doubters in order to rekindle their own enthusiasm for faith.

As preparation for the sermon, I read the text from the translation of the Barbi Bible. I read from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2, verses 42 to 47. The people who had come to faith met regularly and were instructed by the apostles. They lived in close community, broke bread together, and prayed. The people in Jerusalem were seized by marital moisture, for many wonders and signs were performed through the apostles. All who believed held together and had their possessions in common. From time to time they sold lands or other property, and the proceeds were distributed to the needy, as anyone had need. Day by day, as a community, they gathered in the temple. In the houses they held the celebration of the breaking of bread, and with great joy and sincerity of heart they ate together. They praised God and enjoyed the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Thank you, Matthias. That is still your newspaper, Chris, FWG Forum forgotten. Last Wednesday, I heard a lecture in Hamburg, given by my boss, who, by the way, will preach here on September 13th. And the topic was: why do people lose their faith? How does that happen? It actually happens, but why? There are different names for a falling away from the Christian faith, so losing their faith, or whatever. How can we succeed in setting something against this, so that it simply no longer happens? What can one do there? Can one do anything at all? And one of the solutions was indeed also among the recommended measures: to create places where questions can be asked and doubts expressed. That was not good. And I immediately asked myself: do we have places for that, where this can happen in our congregation? Do we have them? That is what it is about today. We have just heard the text, which Matthias read aloud; it is the same one. Once more with a nicer background slide. And this is at the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles. This is the life after the Ascension; actually, the Ascension is right at the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles. And then it begins with the church, Pentecost, and how the whole thing gets started. And this is truly a wonderful book of the Bible. And we will, for example, also start this in the Hauskass now and read through it, chapter by chapter. And before that happens there, so one has to look at the very beginning again: the people who had come to faith, what happened there? Where did they come from? And one has to look into that again; we are not doing that now, I am only telling it briefly. There is definitely something really cool there. Something where one thinks: wow, if that were possible, if that could happen, on one day 3000 people came to the congregation. 3000. At first I wondered, what does that mean, to which congregation? Was there even a congregation before that? We are right at the very beginning. There were the 120 persons, one can read about that at the Pentecost miracle; they were waiting for something, what they were supposed to wait for, there were 120 people. Perhaps those, perhaps it was those, the first congregation. And then 3000 people all at once added. I did a quick calculation; here with us we would have to hold approximately 14, 15 services in a row so that the 3000 people could fit in here. We would be happy about that, wouldn't we? That would be nice; instead of 8 liters or 10 liters of coffee, whoever wants, it was about 10, right? So one can calculate how much that means. The musicians doing it 14 times in a row. Matthias, there would have been no nap for you today, I want to tell you that. 3000 people, one has to imagine that fully. How does that happen? And how did it come about? One has to read that again, also in the Acts of the Apostles. Peter preached. And as a result, so many people were excitedly won for the Christian faith and joined. I looked at that, I I am also a preacher. What is it about? What is the content of his sermon? So he said twice, you have crucified the Son of God, he says to the people listening to him, twice. Change your life. You cannot continue on, let yourselves be baptized in his name, let yourselves be saved, because you need it. And turn away from the life that you are now living. I am not sure whether that would elicit the same reactions if I were to preach this sermon today. Um, and I find that one can already sense that God has touched people in their hearts and not Peter. So he used Peter, but that cannot have been the cause. 3,000 people, they listened to Peter, let themselves be baptized, 3,000 baptisms and then it really got going. Of course, I wanted to know more in detail and they perhaps wanted to know as well, what else is behind this? So they only heard the sermon, let themselves be baptized and then it really got going. Then this path actually began, believing and following, that which we also always have here, the life with Jesus. What consequences does that have? And then this text also comes up here, first, the people who had come to faith met regularly and let themselves be instructed by the apostles at that time. I have now been in this congregation for several years, but before that I was always somehow in the congregation, in church, as well. And I can still remember more precisely that once a woman came to our house group here with us, she was brand new, just like there. She had just come to faith, recognized it so and claimed it for herself. And then she came to our house group, because she was looking for what Maxilas just described, community and getting to know each other a bit more, going deeper, sharing life. And then she asked questions, she really came brand new to faith and was also fresh in her manner, completely different from me, for example. Her thinking was as fresh as her faith. And then question after question came and we were already much further along in our faith than she was. We were so much more mature, so much, so here and she was at the very bottom. That was at least, I think, sometimes in our minds. And at some point she noticed it and asked, am I actually bothering you with all my questions? It has not left my head, because she eventually left. And I thought, that is not good. That was quite a long time ago, am I bothering? May I bother you? May you bother us in our faith? By someone who is new? Asks questions? Young? Does not know their way around? If we do not have a yes to that, then I think we have quite different problems. I was once at a Willow Creek conference and there a woman Liz Weissmann gave a talk. Antidotes to Comfort and Arrogance and Self-Assurance. A punchy title and the subtitle was then surfing with the beginners. I believe I have already told this story here a few years ago. It came back to me. She told a story of a man who could surf quite well and goes to such a hotspot for surfing, where surely big waves come. The beach was divided into people who could already do it quite well. Including him, of course, because he could do it quite well. And then there was an area for beginners, who otherwise also bother you, if you can surf quite well. And then he was of course out there with his people, whom he also already knew and then at some point looks over to the beginners, perhaps also to make a bit of fun or so. And then he sees among the beginners the current world champion in surfing. And then you think, that cannot be. He goes over there into this no-go area, where he actually as a guru does not go. He goes over there and says, hey, come over to us, can you show us something like that and so on. And then he says, no, no, no, I’m staying here. I want to surf with the beginners. And then he told the guy, that’s where I can learn the most. They aren’t already so pre-planned. They simply think completely fresh, completely differently, completely anew. I learn more there than if I went to those who can do it really well. I’m staying here, here I can still learn something. Liz Weisman was concerned with the art of learning anew or switching perspectives. And she called it the idea of the beginner. I believe I know hardly any Christians who do not always have that longing look back. Ah, in the beginning, that was great. That was, oh, there, that was really super. Full of enthusiasm, full of ideas, questions, expectations, commitment. The faith of beginners. Liz Weisman said it, so I wrote it down: Comfort comes as a guest into our life. Comfort becomes the host and eventually the house. It always strikes me again when I read that. We need the questions of the new, of the undecided. Yes, even the questions of the doubters, so that we can lay down our faith behind questions and bad habits. And then perhaps rediscover it, perhaps a little differently. What kind of faith would it be if it could not withstand such questioning? These questions of the Hungarians with people who are completely new to it, but do not yet believe at all, strengthen our faith and even grant us a kind of faith resilience. I just read a report, in a Christian newspaper stand, in Texas, where there is such a Bible Belt, Biblebelt, as it is also called, there are very, very many congregations and many people go there. And 70 percent of the people who were in the children’s church service there lost their faith as adults. That is what it said, I don’t know what that specifically means. That is how it was formulated. And regarding the question of why, where I said, we learned the answers as children, but not the reasoning. And when we were questioned, we had nothing to counter with. Asking questions, hearing doubt, creating reasoning. If you perhaps see yourselves in need of new passion in your faith, of enthusiasm, then go to these people. To people who have perhaps just begun to believe or do not believe at all yet. Invite them and talk about your faith. How did the first church do it? The new people, with the many questions, many ideas, many uncertainties and with this huge enthusiasm, they did that. That is a little from the text we just heard. So we are suddenly a lot of people with the same goal, whom they probably do not all know, 3,000, I can hardly imagine, that they have the goal, we want to live our life with Christ, because we have realized that we have many advantages with him. We have eternal life, we have hope in the here and now, peace in the unrest of the world and what do they do, they meet regularly. So I also know that once a year is also regular, but that is not what is meant here. They met regularly, because it was important to get to know each other better. Because it was also important to be there, also for others, not only because it brings me something, but they also met to gain trust, regularity, that is also a bit stubbornly resilient, even if it brings me nothing. They were instructed, that is, they had places where they were allowed to ask questions and received answers, at least answer options, they knew each other, it was a practical community, they celebrated together from time to time, but the breaking of bread can also mean a little more, that they ate together, which was an even greater factor back then than how we know it today. They even helped each other with money, prayed, praised God, went together to the service and rejoiced. And with what result? They were held in high regard by the the people, and they kept increasing. That was the result of what they had done. Why, spiritual small groups, why house groups, why two households, three households, we have heard all of this about our groups. Why is this important? Jesus had the first small group because it was important to train them well, to instruct them in practice, so that they could observe how Jesus did it. And the young church organized itself this way: they celebrated worship together, and then there were the meetings in the houses, both of these, and this again and again. They did not cease day by day; you can read on for a few chapters. They did not cease day by day in the temple and here and there in the houses to teach and to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. That took place. And Paul founded congregations, almost all of which also first met in the houses. By the way, our congregation too. Our congregation emerged from a house group; students studied in the house group, and this house group grew, and from it a congregation then emerged. And today we ourselves have several house groups. House groups or spiritual small groups mean that one has such a lived community. We said this last Tuesday; for me, it is always something special. Of course, most people like it; I don’t even know some of them very well, but my house group, that is still my house group; I know them better. It is simply something special, and it is lived community, because one knows a bit more about each other, because one has been at the other’s home, because there is concern, interest, correction, all expressions of love, encouragement, common prayer, and each person contributes something; one comes into closer contact with the other. Small groups are a familiar framework, a binding community as help for us. Why small groups, why house groups? Because we need exchange. I find this concept of worship service great, because I am always allowed to speak up here in front, but you are not. So that also has a limit, I think. Not for me, I can let go of whatever I want, but you cannot. And to establish that, we need other structures. That means, we also need a structure where there are smaller circles in which everyone is allowed to speak and listen, where one complements each other. We need training, places of training, to practice things, to try things out, where one perhaps does not want to do it here in this circle, but perhaps first in a small circle. And we need entry portals, more than that there, but also perhaps for the curious, for people who are new. Is what they say true? Is what they sing here true? Does it agree with their life? I want to take a look. Or is it just a show? I want to come into conversation with the congregation. What is a house group not? A house group is not a separate congregation. It can of course become one, but it is not one initially. And without a, a house group, I believe without a house group, I take from myself, I take from myself a piece of blessing if I do not have that. We wish that you receive that here. I did not know that such a thing exists, Matthias. As a booster, simply stronger, a driver for our faith. And I believe that a house group, a spiritual small group, that is for our faith. Or should be, could be. There really are many forms, as we have already heard. And a criterion. Do I grow there in my faith, in my trust in Jesus? Can I move there, ask questions, am I challenged? Am I allowed to express doubt? A spiritual small group is a huge chance to experience what God wants to gift us more concretely, more vividly, and more daily. And perhaps also such a help against the feeling of being alone. Even in a congregation one can feel alone. But perhaps there is yet another step before that. It stood there, they came to Faith. Perhaps it is also the case that you think, wow, yes, that is, I see the benefits and the possibilities. I have a longing for such a community. Yes, I need hope and forgiveness. Or what Peter said. Actually, my step, and I must get out of this distance from God. I would so like to believe. I would like to accept that for myself. I would like to say, yes, wow, I want to have a close relationship with this Living God. Then this decision takes hold, if you feel that God means you. Just like the 3,000 plus X back then. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is the one who has done everything for us so that we can live in a close relationship with God. It does us all good to keep saying this again and again, to say, I want to anchor myself firmly with you, Jesus. I am re-attaching myself to you, and my life is your life. My life belongs to you. Do you have to have a small group? No, I think the question is wrong. Do I want to grow in my faith? Do I want to get to know Jesus better? Do I want to have a place? Very recently. As soon as I can be a petty officer. To the extent that I can bring along interested friends and acquaintances, then the small group is definitely very important and meaningful. The thought from the beginning. It is important that we not only learn answers, but that we also have reasons. Experiences. Then you have to set out, and perhaps you have to bring yourself and such regularity into it. But then it will also become easier. The same interests and goals. Let yourselves be invited, you can now all go to Matthias, ah, Matthias, excuse me, Magsielas, and register there as someone who is seeking. We would like to make it possible, but do not understand it as pressure or as compulsion, but as an option to be able to grow in your faith. I ask once more. Jesus, I am so grateful that you are a living God and that we can pour out our hearts for you. And perhaps we are feeling it right now, that you want to tell us something, because we feel a restlessness, because we feel that we have distanced ourselves from you. Doing and saying things that separate us from you. I want to ask you to forgive us. We confess that we have been unfaithful in thoughts, words, and deeds. Thank you that you are a gracious God. And that we do not have to believe alone, but that we have a community. I want to ask you to bless us as a community with many circles. With groups, with which people follow you together.

Was kann man da tun? Kann man da überhaupt was tun? Wo kam die her? Was ist denn da? Darf man dich stören? Darf man uns stören in unserem Glauben? Von jemandem, der neu ist? Fragen stellt? Jung? So voll Begeisterung, voll Ideen, Fragen, Erwartungen, Einsatz.
