Christian service consists not primarily in teaching, but in personal example, which is made visible through edifying speech and sincere conduct and must consist in constant growth.
Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
The text reports on a weekly sermon by Pope Tawadros II. of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Cairo. He continues the series 'Spiritual Laws for Life' and deals with the 'Law of Example'. The Pope distinguishes three levels of service: teacher, servant, and exemplary servant, the ideal being to unite all three in one person. The example is described as life and constant growth. Six areas of example are named: word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity. The sermon devotes itself to word and conduct, with edifying language, self-control of anger, preservation of the dignity of others, faithfulness, sincerity, and renunciation of abuse of power highlighted as central qualities. The text closes with the promise of divine grace for a careful life.

His Holiness Pope Tawadros II delivered his weekly sermon at the Wednesday gathering this evening from the Papal Residence in Cairo, in the presence of a number of the Church's hierarchs, and the priests of the churches of the Peace City and Artisans sector and their wives, and the sermon was broadcast through the Christian satellite channels and the C.O.C channel belonging to the Church's Media Center on the internet.
In the sermon, His Holiness continued the series "Spiritual Laws for Life," and spoke today about "The Law of Example," and read a portion from the fourth chapter of the First Epistle of the Apostle Paul to his disciple Timothy, verses (12–16), meditating on the two verses: "LET NO ONE DESPISE YOUR YOUTH, BUT BE AN EXAMPLE TO THE BELIEVERS IN SPEECH, IN CONDUCT, IN LOVE, IN SPIRIT, IN FAITH, IN PURITY. ATTEND TO THIS. ABIDE IN IT, THAT YOUR PROGRESS MAY BE EVIDENT TO ALL." (1 Tim 4: 12, 15).
His Holiness the Pope explained that service is not only in teaching but also by example, which is the most important aspect, and there are three levels in this area, which are:
A teacher who conveys knowledge to others.
A servant who offers work to others.
The exemplary servant who offers his life as a witness to Christ before others.
And he indicated that it is best that the three come together in the person of the servant.
His Holiness clarified some of the qualities of example, as follows:
Example is life: Example means model, and every servant and priest is a model in his church, therefore the word "our father" is the key word in the preservation and strength of the church, and he is a member of every family in the church, "NOT AS DOMINEERING OVER THOSE ENTRUSTED TO YOU, BUT BEING EXAMPLES TO THE FLOCK" (1 Pet 5: 3).
Example is continuous growth: Example has continuous growth from year to year, "ATTEND TO THIS. ABIDE IN IT, THAT YOUR PROGRESS MAY BE EVIDENT TO ALL" (1 Tim 4: 15), and in it there is an attempt to imitate the saints for the addition to the soul.
And he indicated that the servant receives those qualities from the words of the Lord Jesus Himself, "ALL THAT JESUS BEGAN TO DO AND TEACH" (Acts 1: 1).
His Holiness the Pope addressed six areas of example, which are:
Speech, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity.
And he divided them into two groups: two of them are evident in the outward (speech and conduct), while the other four are evident within the servant or the teacher.
His Holiness devoted today's talk to speech and conduct, as follows:
1- Speech: And it is the most activity the servant performs, and it is not fitting that the tongue that sanctifies God speaks unbecoming words, "LET NO CORRUPT TALK COME OUT OF YOUR MOUTHS, BUT ONLY SUCH AS IS GOOD FOR BUILDING UP" (Eph 4: 29), but speech must be characterized by the following:
That it be building and not destroying, for the small word from "our father" lifts up the person and supports him and helps him, and makes the soul turn to life.
Control of anger, because the kind word solves half the problem, "A SOFT ANSWER TURNETH AWAY WRATH: BUT GRIEOUS WORDS STIR UP ANGER" (Prov 15: 1).
Preserving the dignity of the other person, for the person cares about his name and his position, so it is not fitting to criticize the appearance of the other, "HE WHO COVERS A TRANSGRESSION SEEKS LOVE, BUT HE WHO REPEATS A MATTER SEPARATES CLOSE FRIENDS" (Prov 17: 9), and encouraging the other.
2- Conduct:
That conduct be with faithfulness, "BE (bearing the form of continuity) FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH (the earth) AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE CROWN OF LIFE (heaven)" (Rev 2: 10), faithfulness in the church and commitment in everything concerning the father priest.
With uprightness, "CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD, AND RENEW A RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN ME" (Ps 51: 10), just as Daniel preserved uprightness in the captivity, for uprightness saves the person in his life.
Not exploiting authority, the authority of the father priest is spiritual, so the father must help and support and forgive and forget.
And His Holiness the Pope concluded: "Speech and conduct require the person to be meticulous, in your life and the purity of your heart and your clear word, God will give you grace in the word you speak, and will answer you, and fulfill your desire, and give you according to your heart."
