Saint Euthymios healed the familial wound of his abandonment through the spiritual reunification of his relatives in a monastery, which shows that true asceticism is connected with care for the community.
So it seems he called them back to himself and restored them all spiritually. Perhaps his soul bore a certain weight, a guilt for this abandonment, and therefore everything was corrected through his prayer in a truly unexpected and wondrous spiritual way.
The text describes the life of Saint Euthymios the Younger as shaped by divine love and ascetic devotion. He is portrayed as a spiritual guide and pillar saint who repeatedly alternated between community and solitude. A central motif is the healing of a familial wound that arose when he left his relatives, including his daughter, to become a monk. Through the founding of a monastery in Peristera and another for his female relatives, this separation is spiritually made right. The text emphasises his humility, as he renounced ascetic elevation so as not to be a spectacle for people. His death on the island of Iera and the transfer of his relics to Peristera round out the picture. The message is that true holiness lies in the connection between ascetic striving and care for one's own community.

Venerable Euthymius the New, A heart inflamed by divine love and the sacred healing of a family "wound"

Stelios Koukos
Venerable Euthymius the New constitutes a brilliant holy personality, who seems to have been guided throughout his entire life by his heart inflamed with divine love and passion…
Indeed, someone might misunderstand him and characterize him as an unstable monk due to his constant relocations. However, his life and the discernment with which he lived show something entirely different, as he benefited a multitude of people at the same time – and especially monks, who saw in his person a brilliant spiritual guide, a holy Elder.
Saint Euthymius became a point of reference among the Athonite monks, who rushed to become his disciples and to practice asceticism beside him, in the place he chose each time. At certain moments, however, he decided that he himself also needed ascetic and spiritual "isolation," or that he had to live the joy and blessing of the desert life, and for this reason he retreated to remote places to practice more intensely.
Twice, in fact, he chose the extremely difficult ascetic life of a stylite. The reason he abandoned this practice both times was because a multitude of people gathered to see him.
The first time, the Venerable set up his ascetic platform as a stylite near Thessaloniki, so, consequently, it was easy for people to approach him to see and admire his ascetic labors.
The second time he attempted the same practice within the Athos itself. But there the same thing happened, and so he chose a less "spectacular" practice. However, he did not cease to remain always equally ascetic and spiritual, isolated with a few of his subordinates.
Another reason for his flight from his base – which ultimately became Athos – was the raids of the Saracen pirates. Thus, he found himself for a period in Vresta of Chalkidiki.
Another sacred "adventure" that the Saint lived was the renovation of a church in Peristera of Thessaloniki, of Saint Andrew, and the founding of a new monastery which was inaugurated in 871. This happened after a vision he saw on Athos.
As we perceive from this fact as well, the Saint, although he seems to have lived as a wanderer, was nonetheless always guided by God.
However, the founding of the monastery in Peristera also hides another symbolism which in a certain way comes to heal the family wounds he left behind when he abandoned his relatives, even his little girl, to become a monk.
In the monastery of Peristera his male relatives settled, who had searched for him and found him, while he also rebuilt a second (female) monastery for his female relatives and descendants.
Thus, he seems to have called them back to him and restored them all spiritually. Perhaps his soul carried a certain weight, a guilt for this abandonment, and for this reason, through his prayer, everything was corrected in a truly unexpected and miraculous spiritual way.
However, the Saint's longing for a hesychastic life did not… find peace even after this event, with which he could well have completed the circle of his earthly journey, remaining among them. Despite his great age, he ascended to the highest level of ascetic trials as a stylite again, and moreover, within the fierce weather of Athos. It was the second time, as we mentioned above.
But, as it seems, he did not want to become a "theater for the people" who visited him, and so he chose once again to come down. He preferred his humility over his… elevation!
The monks, however, followed him again, even to the most remote places he chose as spiritual refuges and places of stillness.
A similar place he chose to be at rest and to prepare for the time of his repose.
When he understood that the hour was approaching, he withdrew to the small island of Iera (probably the uninhabited desert island of Yura in the Northern Sporades), where he fell asleep on the 14th or 15th of October of 898.
His skete was transferred incorrupt a few months later, in January of the following year, to the monastery of Saint Andrew in Peristera, granting to his relatives an eternal consolation.
May we have his blessing!
