Nature Compels You to Fulfill the Duty of Your Tasks - Bhagavad Gita XVIII 59

Sukadev Bretz · Yoga Vidya – Tägliche Inspirationen · 2026-10-16 · Horn-Bad Meinberg · Source

Responsibility · main message Patience · carrying Repentance

Those who refuse their tasks and their karma are compelled by nature to fulfill them after all, and attain the highest realization only through engaged, devoted effort.

If you think you will not fight, then your resolve is futile. Nature will compel you.

The text explains Bhagavad Gita XVIII,59 as an exhortation not to refuse one's own tasks. Krishna is quoted: whoever refuses to fight will be compelled by nature to do so after all. The speaker applies this to everyday life: one may temporarily flee from difficult tasks and from one's own karma, but in the long run one will be caught up by them. The highest spiritual realization is not attained through a simple, supposedly withdrawn life, but through engaged effort and devotion. As an example, people in the ashram are mentioned who give up their tasks when things become difficult; according to the speaker, they develop less than the engaged ones. The engaged ones do indeed also go through crises and the feeling of going beyond their strength, but they reach deeper experiences. The text concludes with a concrete appeal to name the area in which one must now make a special effort, and with an advertisement for the Bhagavad Gita websites and books.

Yes, there he has taken refuge, who is not driven, who does not come to the mind, by whom this is established, he will lead you out of nature. Krishna, the Teacher speaks. If you think full of self-conceit, I will not fight, then this your resolve is meaningless. I will compel nature. Namaste and a warm welcome to the 59th verse of the 18th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita Podcast. My name is Sukade from www.yoga-witya.de. We are in the Bhagavad Gita, the dialogue between Krishna, the Teacher, and Arjuna, the student. We are in the last chapter, the 18th chapter, where Krishna once again summarizes the important teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. Here, verse 59, Krishna says, if you think, I will not fight, then your resolve is meaningless. I will compel nature. Deep inside you feel what needs to be done. Deep inside is the deep desire to do something. From time to time you say, no, I don't want to. I have no more desire. I want to withdraw. I am giving this up. Temporarily that may also work. But afterwards you feel a dissatisfaction. Afterwards you will notice, I should have done something. Then you will have to do it in another situation. You cannot run away from your duties, your karma. You can say, you can temporarily run away from it. But your karma will catch up with you. So it is of no use to run away from difficult tasks. Better is, you tackle the difficult tasks when it is the time. That is mostly now. Sometimes you can also say, this is too much for me right now. You can look, postpone it into the future. But you should not imagine that by leading a simple life, you will come to the highest realization. That is not how it happens. The highest realization is the most difficult thing of all. It is perhaps also the easiest, because it is your true nature, but it is also the most difficult. And there it is, you have to make an effort. I experience it again and again that people run away. Running away from external karma that is there. Running away from difficult tasks. Also in the ashram one finds that. In the ashram there are people who have dedicated their lives to seeking the Highest. But then they run away. When it becomes difficult in their task in the work area, they have a tendency to say, I am giving up my task, or say, seven hours are over, now someone else should do it. My experience is always, those who behave like that, even if they later have more time for meditation, develop considerably less than those who are engaged. Those who are engaged have in the long term the more mystical and the deeper experiences. They also have to go through hell in between. They also have to go through the feeling of being exploited. They have to have the feeling of going beyond their strength. Sometimes they have to go through the feeling as if they were burned out. Sometimes they have the feeling that they cannot manage it at all. But those are then the moments where one gives oneself completely to God. By really giving everything, by unconditionally entrusting oneself to God. Doing everything that needs to be done. Making an effort, yes also inwardly, sometimes fighting against external and internal resistances. But that with love and devotion and entirely offered to God. That is how transformation comes, that is how spiritual growth comes. That is how you experience the Highest. In this, therefore, be aware now, there is somewhere where you have to make a special effort. Whether it is engagement in your job, whether it is engagement in your yoga teaching, whether it is in your selfless engagement, in an association, in an initiative. Whether it is also in the effort for yourself, whether it is in dealing with your children. Become aware, where do you have to make an effort, where it is even called for to fight. So not now fighting, violent fighting, but fighting in the sense of effort, fighting in the sense of engaging, fighting in the sense of the principle of measure, tackling things. And then go at it. If you think, I I will not make an effort, I will not strain myself, if you think that way, then this resolve is pointless, says Krishna. I will force nature. If I in this moment, in the next moment, if I in this life, in the next life, you travel the highest only if you fulfill your karma. Jesus also said that. You will not experience God if you have not fulfilled the last point of your karma, your tasks. I do not have the right word at the moment, the Sermon on the Mount is known to me. Whoever knows the Sermon on the Mount knows that. Where he says somewhere, I have not come to dissolve the law and the prophets, I choose, I tell you, you will not reach the highest if you have not repaid even the smallest, the smallest thing. Even if this is not a literally correct quote now, but whoever knows the Bible knows what it is about. One must fulfill every karma, at least every karma that holds a lesson for one. So it is of no use to try to live a simple life and run away. A spiritual life is not a flight from the world. On the contrary, a spiritual life is making an effort. It is true that you make decisions more often and sometimes a decision can be not to pursue worldly success any further, but to strive for spiritual success instead. But it means making an effort, it means engaging yourself, it means offering everything to God. Ich will mich zurückziehen. So kommt Transformation, so kommt spirituelles Wachstum.
