The transition into the new year and the beginning of the holy months are an urgent opportunity to take on one's responsibility before God and people through inner repentance, ethical conduct, and respect for creation.
To be a good Muslim presupposes being a good human being. Let us show more respect than ever before to the dignity of the human being, to his body and to his property – regardless of his worldview or his faith.
The text is a Friday sermon by DITIB that links the transition from the year 2024 to 2025 with the beginning of the three blessed months of Rajab, Shaʿbân, and Ramadan. It recalls the exemplary role of the Prophet, who intensified his worship during this time, and calls on the faithful to make use of the Raghâʾib Night as a time of grace. A central point is the admonition to mortality: the last Friday prayer of the year could be the last in one's life, which calls for constant readiness for the hereafter. The sermon emphasizes the individual's responsibility to fill his 'book' of deeds with good works and sincere repentance (Tawba). It demands that the dignity of the human being be respected regardless of his worldview and that one behave ethically. Concrete instructions include abstaining from alcohol, gambling, and environmental pollution through fireworks. The text concludes with the appeal to begin the new year as honorable servants of God and to live in harmony with creation.

The Blessed Three Months and the Raghâʾib Night
(27.12.2024)
Dear Brothers and Sisters! Esteemed Believers!
We are at the end of another year. With all its sweet and bitter moments, the year 2024 is drawing to a close. May Allah enable us to do even more good in the coming year than in the past. May the year 2025 become a year of grace, justice, brotherhood, and peace for all humanity.
Brothers and Sisters in Faith!
The first day of the new year coincides with the beginning of the blessed three months: Radscheb, Shaʿbân, and Ramadan. God willing, we will welcome the month of Radscheb on Wednesday, January 1st, and experience the Night of Wishes, the blessed Raghâʾib Night, on Thursday, January 2nd. May Allah count us among those who know how to make use of this atmosphere of divine grace.
Esteemed Believers!
With the arrival of Radscheb, our Prophet felt a deep festive joy within. During these months, he devoted himself more intensely to voluntary acts of worship and approached his Lord with tireless dedication. Two months before Ramadan, the Prophet prepared intensively to benefit as much as possible from the blessings and grace of this holy month. Upon the entry of Radscheb, he recited the following supplication: “O Allah, bless Radscheb and Shaʿbân for us and let us reach Ramadan!”[1]
Honored Believers!
We will soon perform the last Friday prayer of the year 2024 together. But who knows? Perhaps it is also our last Friday prayer in life. Perhaps the number 2025 will be the one that will one day stand on our gravestone. Dear Brothers and Sisters! The world is transient, and death often comes unexpectedly. Let us be ready at all times for the next life, as if it might call us in any moment.
The records of our deeds are kept by the angels whom Allah has placed by our side.[2] What is entered into this register depends on our free will. Therefore, let us fill it with good and adorn it with beauty. If we do not want to regret on that Day of Reckoning, let us make changes in our lives today. Let us ensure that we do not sink in shame when Allah, the Exalted, speaks to us: “Read your book! You yourself are sufficient today as an accountant over yourself.”[3]
Let us not forget: The erasure of our sins depends on our sincere repentance. If we wish to stand before our Lord with an unblemished testimony, we should repent of our mistakes and practice true repentance—Tawba—with firm resolve. Every breath, every Friday is an opportunity; the three blessed months and the Raghâʾib Night are an opportunity that we must know how to appreciate. Let us not forget: To be a good Muslim presupposes being a good human being. Let us show more respect than ever before to the dignity of the human being, to his body, and to his property—regardless of his worldview or belief.
Let us not forget: The transition from December 31st to January 1st is nothing more than a mere numerical change. And with each passing day, we approach death. Let us be responsible towards Allah, emphatic towards people, and respectful towards nature. Let us not harm animals or the environment through fireworks and let us not disturb our fellow human beings. Let us not forget: No celebration makes the impermissible permissible. Let us guard ourselves against alcohol, gambling, and the like—actions that do not correspond to Allah’s pleasure.[4] Let us remember: Even on New Year’s Day, the recording angels are by our side and record all our actions. Let us try to enter the blessed[5] month of Radscheb as honorable servants.
