The growing political distrust and the shift to the right result from perceived state failure and structural injustice, which must be redressed through transparent, fair, and competent politics.
The text uses the image of autumn to describe the political situation in Germany as meagre and partly rotten. It analyses the causes of public discontent, which according to the text is fuelled by perceived state failure and injustice. The author criticises the unequal application of state power, for example in taxation and rescue packages, as well as the inadequate reckoning with crises such as the Corona pandemic. A central focus is on the debate about justice, in which theses by Otfried Höffe on intergenerational justice and duties are discussed. International protests in France and Spain serve as evidence of structural problems in the education system and the housing market. The text calls for a constructive culture of acknowledging mistakes and fair reforms in order to regain trust in the state. Finally, the necessity of a differentiated debate about the German raison d'état and the criticism of Israeli policy is emphasised.

In autumn, the fields are plowed. The political harvest in 2026 was meager, partly rotten; there is almost nothing left to preserve. One reflects on fundamental matters; at the same time, the spring sowing must be planned, preferably with more foresight than in 2026.
Today, I do not wish to single out an individual political problem and evaluate it from a humanist perspective, but rather, in the mild yet clear autumn light, to traverse three fields where fundamental matters are currently being cultivated. Whether the personnel change among the tractor drivers in the federal government proves fruitful remains to be seen.
Where does the discontent come from that then deposits into the right? Much has been said about this; I will come to the topic of justice shortly. In citizen discussions on October 3rd in Bremen, one thing became clearer to me: Many have the impression that our state functions very well, if it so wills: in the collection of taxes and fees from the “normals,” in the rescue of the high-nosed automotive industry and its conversion into armaments smithies, in the aid to Ukraine, whose details are increasingly questioned not only by the AfD and BSW. It also functioned very stringently during the corona measures – albeit with considerable social upheavals. The incomplete processing of this is water on the right’s mills.
At the same time, the former top of the BND (Federal Intelligence Service) reveals itself to be deeply corrupt; the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which is supposed to observe “extremists” of all colors, remains in the twilight. For many, state failure thus does not appear as dysfunctionality, bad enough in itself, but as the pure intention of darker powers. Traceable political errors, e.g., in the Berlin housing problem or in transport and railway policy, are obscured. The impression of a self-service store remains; integrative symbols such as the flag and the national anthem are left unchallenged to the right. Fatal. Here, democratic politics must win back trust step by step. Not through perfect personal performance (politicians are human!), but through a constructive culture of error, through good governance that clearly surpasses the tank battalions in terms of target accuracy, and through wise, just reforms, with which we enter the second field, partly dust-dry, partly muddy, of justice. Here we now also encounter the Chancellor with his Merz bulldog, on which he personally, naturally in Sütterlin script, wrote “performance justice” and “intergenerational justice.”
The philosopher Otfried Höffe, who has written a relevant book on the question of justice, recently surprised with a few bold theses: “Social justice” should be struck from the political debate because it is too closely linked to Christian values such as charity and love of neighbor. Specifically, he sees many imbalances: The elderly must step back in favor of the young. State basic security should include an obligation to communal work. Finally, women’s quotas are unjust; the discrimination of grandmothers cannot be compensated by a preference for granddaughters. Even if it sounds conservative, I find the impetus for discussion fruitful. It should always be a give and take; rights also entail responsibilities and duties.
The student protests in France and the tenant protests in Spain point to similar questions and problems in Germany: The education system is also drastically underfunded here – especially when one considers what all the money is available for. High public debt narrows the horizon for the younger generation. I very much hope that things do not come to a point where a 14-year-old student shoots at his school principal with a shotgun. The anger at the unjust system and at unnecessarily escalating police brutality is understandable.
The tenant protests in Spain also show many illuminating parallels to the situation in Berlin: Politics must finally protect citizens from the excessive profit-seeking of globalized, supposedly freely flowing for the benefit of all, barely taxed capital. Housing is a fundamental right. In the 1920s, one was already much further ahead in this regard, for example in Frankfurt or in Vienna. Incentives for older people to release unused living space must also be added.
Regarding inheritance tax, everyone was waiting for the Federal Constitutional Court (BVerfG). That medium-sized enterprises can be transferred to the next generation almost tax-free and that super-rich people benefit, is now considered unjust even by the conservative press. A considerable learning progress!
On the topic of “social insurance,” there is also movement: While poverty researcher Christoph Butterwegge consistently demands a citizens’ insurance for all in pension, illness, and care, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf sketches a compromise on the topic of “two-class medicine”: Compensation payments could bridge the justice gap in the short term. And from the CDU, the sensible proposal finally comes to relieve lower incomes more precisely by reducing social insurance contributions and to finance the additional tasks of the funds from taxes.
Finally, let us come to another question of justice, which leads us to not only stony, but booby-trapped mountainous terrain: “Peace requires justice,” says Philipp Sanders, this year’s peace prize winner of the German Book Trade. Sanders also asks why Germany is so loudly silent about Israel’s actions in Gaza. The awarding of the Peace Nobel Prize to the South African jurist Navi Pillay points in the same direction.
The coalition negotiations between the Left, the Greens, and the SPD in Berlin have been fiercely attacked for weeks not only by the Conservatives: On the core point of “socialization of housing companies,” surprising compromise proposals are now emerging. The – undisputed and absolutely to be solved! – problems of the Left with antisemitism and the trivialization of Islamism in their Arab-Muslim electorate, especially in Neukölln, are, on the other hand, demonized. It is clear: Contacts with clan crime are absolutely out of the question, and human dignity must apply in all – especially in dogmatically religious – directions.
The concretization of Germany’s “Staatsräson,” the handling of Israel and its government, living remembrance culture, liberal definitions of antisemitism, and the obligations of Germans toward our present-day Jewish fellow citizens must be discussed openly and in a nuanced manner. If the Federal President does not applaud in response to Sanders’ questions, that does not help. The realization is gaining ground that Israel has every right to self-defense, but no free pass for inhumane colonial and war policies. Nor may it retaliate with terror and war crimes in kind, as the Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm pointed out with concern shortly after October 7, 2023. Criticism of Israeli policy must be possible without a reflexive accusation of antisemitism, and German policy must finally draw consequences from this.
