The Islamic creed is not a mere ritual, but a lifelong covenant with God, based on knowledge and inner conviction, that establishes the oneness of God and the prophethood of Muhammad as the centre of human existence.

The creed is a covenant between us and our Creator that we will maintain a believing attitude throughout our entire lives.

The text explains the shahada, the creed, as the first and fundamental principle of Islam. It emphasises that this declaration must be lived not only verbally but with deep knowledge and inner conviction. Creation is presented as a constant witness to the omnipotence of God, calling human beings to reflection. The creed is described as a lifelong covenant with the Creator, which demands exclusivity in the service of God and the following of the Prophet in a moral sense. The text spans the arc from birth, where the creed is whispered into the ear, to death. It concludes with the promise that a sincere declaration of faith protects one from the hellfire. It is an instructive sermon that highlights the theological significance and the practical impact on life of the shahada.

The Foundation of Islam: The Declaration of Faith (17.01.2025) Dear brothers and sisters! Honored believers! The first of the fundamental principles of Islam is the Shahada, the Declaration of Faith.[1] That is to say: The one who internalizes this statement accepts that there is no god other than Allah, the Almighty. The one who accepts this statement believes, as if he had seen with his own eyes and heard with his own ears, that the Prophet Muhammad is the servant and prophet of Allah, and as if he had been a witness to this event when this mission was bestowed upon him. Brothers and sisters! The Declaration of Faith is not an ordinary word that comes to our lips in a few seconds, and it should not be so. The vast universe in which we live has been proclaiming for billions of years the truth that "there is no god but Allah." From the bird flying in the sky to the grass growing on the ground; from the stars in the sky to the fish swimming in the sea - everything bears the signs of the Almighty Creator. What we as humans, possessed of reason, must do is to bear witness to the Almighty power of Allah with our whole hearts by establishing a connection between the signs in creation and the verses of the Quran. Brothers and sisters! Knowledge must underlie the declaration. A declaration made without knowledge and understanding has no validity before Allah. Thus, Allah, the Almighty, states that among those who testify that there is no god but Him, there are people with knowledge.[2] Honored believers! The Declaration of Faith is a covenant between us and our Creator that we will maintain a believing attitude throughout our entire lives. The servant who believes in the word "La ilahe illallah" and pronounces it can serve no one other than Allah! He cannot ascribe Allah's attributes to others and cannot associate anything with Allah. A believing person who believes that the Prophet Muhammad is the servant of Allah strives to be a servant of good moral character, just like the Prophet Muhammad (s). A believer who accepts that the Prophet Muhammad is the messenger of Allah protects the legacy of the Holy Quran and the Sunna[3] that he has entrusted to us. My brothers and sisters! The Declaration of Faith is also a symbol of a new beginning. Before we give our newborn children a name, we recite the call to prayer into the right ear and the Iqama into the left ear. When our child grows up, we first teach the Declaration of Faith, which is the foundation of the religion. One day, the Declaration of Faith that was whispered into our ear in the cradle will be the last word we want to say on our deathbed. May Allah grant us all the opportunity to live in faith and die in Islam. I would like to conclude my sermon with the following glad tidings from our Prophet: "Whoever testifies with his heart that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, Allah will protect him from the Hellfire."[4] The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Bukhari, Iman, 1,2.
