The celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad is a good innovation that is based on the consensus of Muslim scholars and is rejected by those who oppose it without sufficient evidence and in contradiction to the Muslim community.
Among the recommended innovations that the Muslim community approves of and on whose legitimacy there is consensus among Muslims is the celebration on the occasion of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The text is an Islamic sermon that defends the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (Mawlid) as a good innovation (Bid'ah Hasanah). The speaker relies on Quranic verses, hadiths, and the consensus (Ijma') of Muslim scholars to substantiate the legitimacy of this practice. He refers to the ruler al-Mudhaffar of Irbil as the founder and to Imam asch-Schafi'i and al-Hafidh as-Suyuti as theological authorities who approve of the celebration. At the same time, he sharply demarcates himself from a group that rejects the Mawlid and forbids Tawassul, and describes them as ignorant and in contradiction to the consensus. In the second address, the book 'Mawlid al-Arus' is additionally criticized because, in the speaker's view, it describes the deity with body parts and represents Muhammad as part of God, which would amount to leaving Islam. The text calls on the listeners to continue the celebration, to recite the Quran, to praise God, and to extol the Prophet.

Praise is due to Allâh, the Exalted. We praise Him, seek His support, guidance, and forgiveness. May Allâh protect us from committing sins. The one whom God has guided will not go astray, and the one whom God has led astray will not find guidance. I bear witness that there is no god but Allâh, the One, Who has no partner and to Whom nothing and no one is comparable. And I bear witness that our honored, beloved, and great Prophet Mu h ammad is the servant and messenger of God. A s - S alâtu was-Salâmu upon the Prophet Mu h ammad and upon all other prophets. Then, O servants of God, I exhort you and myself to righteousness and to the fear of Allâh, the Exalted and Almighty, for the one who is obedient to God belongs to the righteous and the blessed.
Allâh, the Exalted, says in the noble Q ur´ân in Sûratu n-Nisâ‘ , Âyah 115:
This Âyah is proof that the one who wishes to attain salvation and blessedness must follow the path of the believers and adhere to the consensus of the Muslims. Moreover, the mentioned Âyah is proof of the corruption of those who contradict the consensus of the Muslims.
The Companion of the Prophet Mu h ammad ﷺ, ^Abdu l-Lâh Ibn Mas^ûd, said:
The meaning is: If the scholars approve of a matter and agree upon it, then it is accepted in the Islamic religion; and if the scholars unanimously disapprove of something, then it is not accepted in the Islamic religion.
Among the recommended innovations that the Islamic community approves of and upon whose legitimacy there is consensus among Muslims is the celebration on the occasion of the birth of the Prophet Mu h ammad ﷺ. It counts among the good deeds, and the Muslim who performs this act will receive reward for it, as he celebrates this occasion out of love for the Prophet and feels happiness and joy over his noble birth. Even though this innovation was introduced after the death of the Messenger of God ﷺ, it is a good innovation ( Bid^ah H asanah ), and there is no disagreement in the community of the Prophet ﷺ regarding its permissibility.
Al-Mu dh affar , the ruler of Irbil , who was a pious and courageous scholar, is the one who first performed this act at the beginning of the seventh century AH. He gathered many scholars of his time, and they all praised this good innovation, agreed with it, and did not reject this action. Similarly, the scholars who came after them approved of this innovation.
No one denied the celebration on the occasion of the birth of the Prophet ﷺ except a group called Mudjassimah , namely those who describe Allâh with body parts, those who also prohibit the use of “ Tawassul ”. This group, which emerged about two centuries ago and declared the celebration on the occasion of the birth of the Prophet ﷺ forbidden, thus contradicts the consensus of the Islamic community. These ignorant people claim without evidence that this innovation is a bad innovation ( Bid^ah D alâlah ) and cite a H adîth for this, which is however no proof for their claim, and they only want to deceive people with it. This H adîth is established and has been graded as strong. In it, the Prophet ﷺ said:
However, this H adîth means that the innovations introduced after the death of the Prophet Mu h ammad ﷺ are bad, except for those innovations that are in accordance with the Islamic religion.
The word “Kullu” here means “most” and not “without exception all,” comparable to the wording “Kull” in Ayah 25 from Surah al-Ahqaf:
Transliteration: Tudammiru Kulla Schay'in Bi'amri Rabbihâ
The wind mentioned in this Ayah did not destroy everything without exception, but rather, for example, exempted the mountains and the ground from destruction.
In the work “Sahih Muslim” and other books, the following Hadith, which is classified as strong, was transmitted:
The meaning is: Whoever introduces a good Sunnah in Islam receives its reward and an additional reward when this Sunnah is imitated, without the rewards of the imitators being diminished. And regarding this, the high-ranking scholar Imam Muhammad Ibn Idris ash-Shafi'i said: “Innovations are divided into two types. One of them is the innovation that contradicts the Qur'an, the Sunnah, or the consensus (Ijma') of the scholars, and that is the innovation of misguidance. The second type of innovation is the undisputedly good innovation, and that is the praised and not despised innovation. Transmitted by Imam al-Bayhaqi and others.
How can these ignorant people still claim that the gathering of Muslims to – in accordance with the Islamic religion, the Sunnah, and the agreement of Islamic scholars – recite the noble Qur'an, praise God, and honor the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would be a misleading innovation? How can they dare to claim such a thing? Have they not heard what Allah, the Exalted, says in the noble Qur'an in Surah al-Muzzammil, Ayah 20:
The meaning is: And so recite the noble Qur'an.
As well as in Surah al-Ahzab, Ayah 41:
The meaning is: O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance.
To praise and honor the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was this not mentioned in the noble Qur'an? Yes! Allah Ta'ala says in the noble Qur'an regarding the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Surah al-Qalam, Ayah 4:
The meaning is: You (O Muhammad) truly possess a noble and great character.
Furthermore, Allah, the Exalted, says in the noble Qur'an regarding the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Surah al-Anbiya', Ayah 107:
The meaning is: Allah sent the Prophet Muhammad as a mercy for the people and Jinn.
Beloved brothers in Islam! Was it not mentioned in the noble Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ that praising the Prophet – collectively or individually, with or without the tambourine (Duff) and in a mosque or outside – is permissible and a good deed?!!! Yes! In a Hadith classified as strong, it was mentioned that a group from Abyssinia (al-Habashah) danced in the mosque of the Prophet ﷺ and praised the Prophet in their language. The Prophet ﷺ then said, in essence: What are they saying? It was told to him: They say: 'Muhammad is a righteous servant'. The Prophet ﷺ did not disapprove of their action and did not say that this would be forbidden.
Hear, dear brothers in Islam, what al-Hafiz al-Suyuti, when asked about the celebration on the occasion of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth, in a treatise which he named “The Good Intention in the Conduct of the Mawlid,” answered: To celebrate the Mawlid by Muslims gathering together, reading some verses from the Noble Qur’an, narrating about the biography of the Prophet and the events that occurred on the day of his birth, and then eating something and leaving – and nothing more – counts among the good innovations for which the Muslim is rewarded, for this includes praising and venerating the Prophet, showing love for the Prophet and joy over his noble and honorable birth.
Servants of God! May God be merciful to you! Therefore, do not accept the statements of those who reject the use of Tawassul (intercession) and have no help for our Prophet. They claim that Muslims – everywhere on earth – are misguided because they celebrate the noble birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and that only they are those who have recognized the truth. These are ignorant and have no knowledge regarding Allah, the Exalted. These people have no love for our Prophet, so do not be deceived by their claims and do not accept their rejection. Continue to commemorate the noble birth of the Prophet ﷺ, recite the Qur’an, mention the events that occurred on the day of his noble birth, praise the Prophet ﷺ and venerate him with sincere intention, and do not let yourselves be distracted by any denier or slanderer.
This is what I have to say, and I ask Allah for forgiveness for you and for myself.
The Second Sermon:
Praise and glory belong to Allah, the Exalted. May Allah protect us from committing sins. The one whom God has guided will not go astray, and the one whom God has led astray will not find guidance. As-Salatu was-Salamu upon the Prophet Muhammad. Servants of God, I exhort you and myself to righteousness.
Brothers in Islam, verse 3 from Surah al-Ikhlas ﴿لَمۡ يَلِدۡ وَلَمۡ يُولَدۡ ٣﴾ means that Allah is neither a father nor a son. This contains the rejection of the idea that Allah would be an origin for something or that He Himself would have an origin, as is the case, for example, with a father and a child – the father is the origin of the child, and the child is formed from particles of the origin. Through this, one recognizes the disbelief contained in the book “Mawlid al-Arus.” It is claimed therein that Allah has a radiant face and took a part of this light and said to it, “Be Muhammad,” and it became Muhammad. This does not belong to the teachings of Islam, but to the invalid beliefs that are spread in the name of Islam, although they lead out of Islam. Allah is not a light nor any other body; consequently, He has no body parts. Thus, the belief that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would be a part of God leads out of Islam. In this regard, Allah Ta’ala says, describing the belief of some non-Muslims:
The meaning is: They have described some of God’s servants as a part of God.
The one who believes in the aforementioned claim is obligated to return to Islam by pronouncing the declaration of faith.
And know that Allah called you to something important. He has called you to recite As-Salatu was-Salamu for the Prophet. Allah, the Exalted, says in Surah al-Ahzab, verse 56:
O Allah, grant the Prophet Muhammad and his Ahl a higher rank, just as You granted the Prophet Ibrahim and his Ahl a high rank. And grant the Prophet Muhammad and his Ahl blessings, just as You granted the Prophet Ibrahim and his Ahl blessings. You are the One who is described with perfect power and mercy, and the One who has the right to be praised. Allah, the Exalted, says in the Holy Quran:
The meaning is: O mankind, be righteous. Indeed, the earthquake of the Hour will be a tremendous thing. On that Day, every nursing mother will forget what she is nursing, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see the people in a state of intoxication, but they are not intoxicated, but rather the punishment of Allah is severe.
O Allah, we ask You to fulfill our supplication, to forgive us our sins and errors, to let us belong to the rightly guided and not to those who have gone astray. O Allah, we ask You to remove our worries and our grief from us and to protect us from what we fear. Servants of Allah, Allah calls to justice, to good conduct, and to maintaining kinship ties, and He forbids indecencies, evil, and injustice. This is an admonition so that you may reflect. Perform the duties and refrain from sins, ask God for forgiveness and trust in God, be righteous, and He will remove your worries and distress from you. Aqimis-Salah! (Call the Iqamah)
Full text in the original
Lautschrift: Tudammiru Kulla Schay´in Bi´amri Rabbihâ
Allâh, der Erhabene, sagt in Sûratu l-´A hz âb, Âyah 56:
A q imi s - S alâh ! (Sag die I q âmah auf)
