True friendship consists in being together in the search for truth, and since all earthly relationships are impermanent, Gurbani is the imperishable friend that leads to inner transformation.
DOSdi, the definition of friendship means, for two come together who are in search, of the truth.
The text deals with the concept of true friendship (Dosti) in Sikhism. The speaker recounts an interreligious dialogue event in Stuttgart and derives from it the necessity to respond on the basis of Gurbani. He addresses the problem that worldly circles of friends are often not spiritually aligned and prevent people from staying on the spiritual path. The word Dosti is etymologically broken down: two (do) coming together in search of the truth (sat). Through the example of the friendship between Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana, it is shown how friendship leads to transformation. Gurbani is presented as the true friend and constant support, since all earthly relationships are impermanent. The text calls on the listener to seek the community that helps with inner transformation, and to internalize Gurbani rather than merely recite it.

From the bottom of my heart, welcome to our Wisdom Talk today. I was recently at an event. In Stuttgart in the evening, an event on the topic of value communication. Visibly believing. I had invited a Jew, a Baha'i, and myself as a SIKH. And it was about a dialogue. It was a public event and questions are asked there by the moderator from the audience and then you have to answer spontaneously. And for that you need practice in dialogue. You need practice, of course when you speak in the context of Gursikhi, I immediately need a reference in my heart, how can I answer on the basis of Gurbani. Not what I learned in school, not what I know from hearing, not what I read somewhere, but what can I say on the basis of Gurbani. And that is a practice. And that is why I want to get to the point where we learn together, how can we practice this. A common exchange and not a monologue. I am absolutely with you. So I am also for it that the young people and also all participants, who are perhaps a bit older, here get involved. Most of them also do that in the course of the conversation, I have noticed. But as you just said, it is also a practice for everyone. And that has to be said. What comes directly to mind for me on this topic from my life is, key technically, it is the friends we surround ourselves with. Whoever it is, it always colors us. That means, we do not always know at the beginning, who is who. And we should actually, when we now consider Gurmut, not really have any prejudice or any preconceptions about someone. But over time, over the time in which one was, who perhaps also liked at the beginning. And perhaps also later. Sometimes life with these friends is not really in accordance with Gurmut. And I believe the bigger problem is not when you somehow get betrayed or have such experiences, sometimes the problem is even when you get along very well with them. Even very well, but you know, when you are with them, you are not in Gurmut. And then you are in a Catch-22, because on one hand they are actually nice to you and are perhaps good friends. But at the same time they are not in Gurmut and you can then so to speak simply say, people, I don't feel like being with you, because you are not in accordance with Gurmut in some way. That is a bit of the problem I have very often encountered with many people, who then later also want to go to Gurmut, but simply their circle of friends has been so established over their youth that even when they want to, they are always drawn back. And that could perhaps be taken into consideration a bit today. Yes, thank you very much, Kurt Breitz. Very, very good point. So we do not live now in a society where we can say, we are surrounded by Gurmut people, but quite the opposite, when I look at my life, I am all the time surrounded by people who have a completely different way of life. Almost also finally. And then of course the question is, how can I find a closeness to a spiritually feeling way of life, when what surrounds me is not spiritual at all, but materialistic. Yes, how are we trained in school? We are trained to become good, so to speak, biological robots in the labor market. We learn specialized knowledge above all. But we do not learn in school, we just recently had a discussion about Indonesia on this, we do not learn in school, how do I become a balanced person? How do I become a good person? What do I do when I am feeling bad? What can help me then? How do I actually come to cooperation and not to competition? In school it is about how has
the better grade, but the evaluations are about saying things. The wisest is actually the one who is the most wise, and we form ourselves toward wisdom. That is a completely different approach, that does not mean that we would not acquire specialized knowledge there. Of course we also need specialized knowledge, I need mathematics, so if I want to become an architect and construct a house. At the same time I can also for example connect physics, yes, the law of conservation of energy, with gourmet, where it is always about the transformation of energy. We spoke about this last time, Karmke Lomo Angar, yes, the five thieves, which stem from the core problem, namely from Barum, that arrogance that we have on the worldly level. Yes, how can we transform them? And on the topic of friendship it is also about where I find the environment that helps me to transform myself, to transform my vices into virtues. Where can I overcome the bad in me, step by step? Where do I find the community where I get the love to grow? Whoever, just like a plant needs water, needs a human's love. Yes, small children know, babies, if they don't get security, if they are not embraced, babies wither. That means that friendship is always very, very deeply connected with the basic theme of security. Being connected, we want to be connected. We do not want to be alone, because where we come from, we were also connected. On the level of Satschkant we are connected with the ocean of all the other enlightened souls, like an ocean. Now we are however thrown here and are quasi still connected, but at the same time separated from this ocean. And that is why we do not like darkness. We like the light, we like the warmth, because we come from there. And that is what we are actually also looking for in a friendship. Now we can perhaps start with this, who of you knows what the word DOS, the means? We just heard it, Kisnal Kijedosdi, Sabijagil Celenhaar. DOSdi. What does that mean, God? There is already the Do, two, apparently in it. Very good. You can clarify the other parts. He still has an idea. DOSdi, Sat, are you on the right track, Kurt Riedt. Okay, yes. Do and Sat. Sat, okay. Sat, that is the DOS, what does it mean? Truth. Yes? DOSdi, the definition of friendship means, two come together who are on the search for the truth. DOSdi, two do not come together like they want to party together. But two come together who have the same mission and say, I am part of the truth, but now I am here and the truth is still with me, but I am no longer fully with the truth. And now I want to become fully truthful again. How do I succeed in that? And the two who come together on this path and support each other. That is DOSdi. Very clear. And the one? Gnanec meets Baylenna. What are both looking for? DOSdi, both are looking for the truth. And Gnanec is then on the path to truth, on the peak and becomes an enlightened one. And Baylenna is still on the search and then through the discourse, through the friendship with Gnanec, through the community, through the shared experiences and of course through the speaking, through Gurbani, through truth, he is elevated. It is a transformation. He is biologically the same man he was before. On the worldly level he is completely transformed. He had tried many things before, searched here, searched there, tried everything, techniques, meditation techniques, yoga, whatever. But where does he find what he is looking for? When Gnanec says, you don't have to do anything with your body. You don't have to run around in the world. But nediqa in your own house. Where you are connected with the Divine, if you take the spiritual bath there, you see the immortal and you always add to yourself. That is lived friendship in
Gursikhi. It is about the search for truth. You said, Gurbani, we then build ourselves up on a circle of friends. It is completely normal in this society, where there are very different ways of life. I have already said that much is very materially oriented, not only here but all over the world. And then at some point you have your circle of friends and it is very, very hard to detach yourself from it at some point. But one truth we know and it is also in the Shab that we have just listened to. Yes, sabh bideh bideh lden haare. Everyone will leave us. With whom should we make friends if everyone will leave us? And here it really says everyone. That means, it also concerns the parents. It also concerns the siblings. It concerns the partner, the female partner. It concerns the school friends and so on. Can you all think about who your best friends were in kindergarten. Do you still have contact with them? That is an exception if you will still have contact with them. Then primary school. Do you still have contacts there where you say, those are real friends of mine? I can call them at 12 o'clock in the evening, at night, 24 o'clock and say, I now really have a problem and need your help. How many from secondary school? How many can you call at the job, with whom you work? And how many can we call where we say, I got to know them through social media. That is why Gurbani says here, right? Kurekure ne hele ga visre kratar. They are always after what will not remain. Die kratar visre ger. The Creator, with whom we are in spiritual connection, the mission to return there, we have lost sight of, because we are always busy with the mild Kure. That is, things that have no value and that one actually so to speak throws in the bin. Yes, and then it says, does the Creator go even further? Gude mita, right? That is the difficult part, it is not easy, because this whole material thing, yes, we love it. It is sweet. Gude mita. And it is even at the front then, right? Gude mia, Gude di, bi, ka, pu, i, ka. Yes, that is what it is about then. The female partner, the partner will also not stay with us. We are at some point in such a complete dependence to think, I simply cannot live without a female partner-partner. One has also lived with a female partner-partner before. So, what is it about? As always, right, Gurbani is about finding out, what is the truth? And my true friend, yes, is Kratar, but the correspondence so to speak of Kratar in the worldly is wisdom, which always helps to understand at all what a friend is and what is not. So, it is my best friend Gurbani. I can, if I have internalized Gurbani, always fall back on it. Only with the Arsler her. It is my support when I am lying on the ground. It does not matter where I live. It is my support. We had last year for example the topic of pronunciation. It comes to mind again now. That was also discussed again with Anand Gussix afterwards. And we were actually of one mind, they all said, and they live somewhere completely different, one in Australia, the other somewhere else. They all said, because I had given this example with the person who is in the desert and wants to drink, has not drunk anything for days and is on the verge of dying of thirst. There is the desert. And walks up to it and asks, yes, you have a desert, where is there water. And the Bedouin in the desert then points with his finger in a direction and says, there is the spring, there is water. Yes, what is then important? It is important that I then follow this advice, go there where the water is and then drink the water. It is absolutely secondary whether I can pronounce water correctly or not. In Gurbani it is very, very important that I understand Gurbani, internalize it and bring it to life. That is the focus of Gurbani. There are also verses that are about that
to prove. That would lead too far now, but we really did discuss that in the Beteil. It might be a healthier topic than we just came back to again. I want to understand that in my everyday life. Not how this bank is being pronounced correctly here, but what it tells me about the topic of friendship. I carry this knowledge in my heart. When I live it, this abstract knowledge, this abstract verse becomes lived wisdom. And I said, Grubani is then here a close friend, the closest friend. And why? What quality does Grubani have? She has the quality that she is always there for me. 24 hours a day. I had to pay nothing for it. I had to call no hotline where I first have to pay money. And now the question again, before I come to the next point, what makes a friend for you? What qualities must a friend have, if they have a girlfriend? So a good friend will give advice, or will say what is good for you? Right, and not what is bad for you. That is a very decisive point in friendship. If I say, hey come, just look, let's smoke two. You really won't die in two cigarettes. No, one won't die. But there are enough who have smoked two, three times and then somehow got a taste for it and then became dependent. I have a friend who, when we were studying together, really was a chain smoker. That was terrible. For me it was also not very close friendship back then, when we were walking outside, I always walked a bit further away from him so that the smoke wouldn't hit me. That's not nice now, I didn't want to separate myself. He was really a honorable person, a good person. But at some point in his young years, he started smoking, he then became dependent and always said, it's so terrible, I want to quit, but he didn't manage it. It was somehow a beautiful time, but also terrible for me. I even had a professor once who smoked in the lecture hall. That is incredible, nowadays that doesn't happen at all, but back then it still did. He was now also not usual, but should things happen then. And he is a professor. Now this friend, he doesn't need it anymore. He is now a person who is very spiritual. So he needed time, but he understood it. We want to have friends who bring us on the good path. I hear that again and again, who simply accept us as we are. So I rob a bank, I lie all the time, I cheat people, I deceive, I am totally selfish, I still consider myself great and look down on other people and I want to be accepted as I am. No, being accepted, that was once so beautifully said, as God made us. Not as we have become, not the alienated version, but the original. That is what should be accepted. If we say, yes, I want to be accepted as I am, what does that mean, who am I? Now we are back at the basic theme of spirituality, yes? Man do do do do, Kei apna mul pechan. We are here to recognize who we actually are and not, so to speak, we are here to identify ourselves with what we have become. Physically with our social identity, with our appearance, with our language, but that which is behind it on a spiritual level, beyond the body, beyond language, beyond our social identity, beyond our appearance. The one who helps me on this path, that is a friend. But if we are now already in the conversation, what I have often seen, so in my conversation, with the people I know, trying to come to Zikinat, as you just said, it is a bit the same, but very often it is
Problem, these Do-sti, which ideally we should only have with Gurbani. Yes, because Gurbani is the only thing that is eternal, or the eternal truth. It is not so simple when one has a Do-st, which also means that one can communicate with someone. When two people love each other very much, they can also communicate without words and so on. It is probably a bit difficult in practice, it might be possible, but with Gurbani it is already very important that we can also understand Gurbani. There we have, I believe, the themes in our system, in the Sikh system, that we do not have this access at all, even if we want to, so if now many are listening in this example, although the group we have, they are probably even a bit closer to all the themes, simply have no access, or are too late to somehow establish access now and are then a bit demotivated, because one has to learn a lot for that too. That is another topic right away. Yes, very important, Ingergreet. That is what we have here and take. That means, someone has to listen and someone has to be able to give hard. It is not a monologue, it is not a one-way street. And precisely because Gurbani does not so to speak speak by itself, but I have to make it speak, that is exactly the challenge on this level. If I have no access at all, on the level of letters and words not speaking to me. Exactly, that is my... But at the same time we must not forget that Gurbani is the correspondence of soul wisdoms that I carry within me. So, Vinibol der Sabikic Janda, or? So, the Divine knows everything anyway, without me speaking. That means, it is about the topic of Gebäld. So, I do not have to speak a Gebäld with my tongue to share my worries, because Gurbani says, Anta de Jamipurga de data knows everything anyway. So, I do not have to put into words anymore and already so to speak, the Divine in me what is actually going on. It is also about the topic here that I cannot hide anything from myself, I can hide things from people. Then so act as if, I am incredibly holy and completely great, but actually I am not something completely different. It is about the authentic, it is about honesty. And now, as you say, Gurbani, okay, so, if I have access to Gurbani, wonderful, then now open these Pferse, they inspire me incredibly. If I have a problem, they help me. Yes, but if I have no access at all, in fact, as you say, then we have a big problem. And we have now already in various podcasts addressed the topic of Colonization. If I have not only been colonized for two years, but for centuries, I am so to speak alienated from Gurbani from generation to generation. And I am now on a completely different planet and want somehow to return to the earth. But actually do not know how I so to speak get there. I do not know at all whether I can take the spacecraft to return. And I so to speak understand, and I find myself completely with you and I hear you, there is a challenge here, there is a Gap. And that is why we do something like today, that at least the attempt is made. We do not know whether we will be successful. We give our best with our modest means, to share the little that we have understood. So that this Gap perhaps becomes a little smaller. And you perhaps say after such a discussion, it is actually a wonderful, wonderful way of life. And I want to give it, not because someone tells me to, because there is some expectation or pressure, but because I have noticed that it touches my heart and I can live more happily. That is why you go. Because it helps me, so to speak, in the core to recognize who I actually am. Because it helps me,
so to speak, on the way through this difficult life. And that is so to speak the magic of Gurbani. When I come to the point, from what I do, I do it because I was taught that way, oh wow. I do it because it does me incredibly good. And when I speak, it does me incredibly good. And I am myself inspired, not because I am so great, but because what I am doing right here, I have Gurbani before me and then I also think again, hmm. You have now understood a few points perhaps, but you have also noticed when speaking. Completely, it is not yet clear to yourself, you still have to learn a lot yourself. But how wonderful that I have this access. And when I speak, I must also have understood the things. If I am an honest speaker. Yes, anyone can tell something, that is easy. But if I have the claim, I want to try, at least to live it, then one has respect for one's own words. One has respect for it, hmm, and also reverence for Gurbani, that I may not say anything false. And that also makes up friendship. I do not simply speak badly or falsely about a friend. A true friend. I want to say nothing false about Gurbani. And therefore we must hear from you, where do you have difficulties? Now on the topic of friendship, where does it simply not click for you, where you say, perhaps these are great words, but I have a completely different problem with friendship and I cannot connect that. That is why I said at the beginning, important is honesty. Everything begins with honesty. And it is completely okay to say, yes, I am still very far from Sikhi. It is much, much better than somehow saying, I am actually a Palagurmuk and otherwise so, but in my heart I actually know, pff, so, actually I am totally unhappy. I am not with myself. I am not in friendship with myself. That is a very important point. That Zadja

Was kann mir dann helfen? DOSdi. Was bedeutet das Gott? Do und Sat. Sat, okay. Sat, das ist die DOS, was bedeutet? Wahrheit. Ja? Sehr klar. Und der war? Gnanec trifft auf Baylenna. Was suchen beide? Sondern nediqa in deinem eigenen Haus. Ja, was ist dann wichtig? Man do do do do, Kei apna mul pechan.
