Work is a sacred duty

The text is a Friday sermon of DITIB that presents work as a sacred duty and an indispensable part of worldly life. It relies on Quranic verses and hadiths to ground the moral responsibility in working life. The text is addressed to believers and reminds them of Islamic values in professional life, which according to the sermon are often forgotten. Concrete ethical standards are formulated for employees, employers, merchants, and customers. These include honesty, diligence, justice, punctuality in wage payment, and the renunciation of fraud. The text calls on believers to begin in the name of Allah, to strive for halal income, and to make efforts for both this world and the hereafter. It concludes with a supplication of the Prophet for honestly earned sustenance and protection from what is forbidden.

Work is a Sacred Duty (25.04.2025) Work is an indispensable component of worldly life. It forms the foundation of social and economic order. The verse stating that a person receives only that as a reward for which they themselves strive confirms this fact.[1] Dear Brothers and Sisters! If a person receives only the reward for their own work – does this not also mean that this work is subject to moral responsibility? Of course it is. Our noble religion, Islam, is a religion of morality. As in all areas of life, there are clear ethical standards for working life as well. Just as employees have moral duties, employers also bear responsibility. Similarly, traders as well as customers must observe their ethical guidelines. In this blessed hour of the Friday prayer, we wish to jointly remind ourselves of the Islamic values in professional life – values that are all too often forgotten. Brothers! Believers! Let us never forget: The best provision is that which one has earned through one’s own effort and toil.[2] Let us strive for the Hereafter with what Allah has given us, but let us not forget our share in worldly life either.[3] Let us strive for both this world and the Hereafter. The Basmala is the key to all good. Let us always begin our work with the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate. Let us know that true wealth is not the possession of many goods, but the fullness and contentment of the heart.[4] Let us not strive for much, but for lawfully earned income. Let us be disciplined and responsible in professional life. Whatever activity we perform – let us carry it out with care, honesty, and the highest quality. Let us only take on tasks that we are capable of handling, and let us leave others to those who possess the necessary expertise. Let us remain sincere – let us not mix our words with lies, and let us not corrupt our work through fraud. Let us not deceive customers and let us not cheat in measure and weight. Let us not forget that purity is half of faith.[5] Let us be pure – outwardly and inwardly – and let us carry out our work conscientiously and righteously. In the sweat of the righteous worker lies blessing. If we are employers, let us appreciate our employees. Let us respect their rights and pay their wages on time and in full. Let us treat them with kindness, justice, and generosity. If we are employees, let us appreciate the value of our employer, from whom we derive our livelihood. Just as we protect our own interests, let us also safeguard the interests of our employers. Let us fulfill our duties conscientiously and let us strive to truly deserve our wages. I would like to conclude my sermon with a supplication of the Prophet: “O Allah, grant us lawfully and sincerely earned livelihood. O Allah, protect us from the forbidden! O Allah, let us not depend on anyone but You!”[6] (Amin) The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Quran, Nadschm, 53/39. [2] Bukhari, Buyu’, 15. [3] Quran, Qasas, 28/77. [4] Bukhari, Riqaq, 15. [2] Buchari, Buyu’, 15. [3] Koran, Qasas, 28/77. [4] Buchari, Riqaq, 15.
