All is vanity – and where is justice? A sermon on Ecclesiastes 8:10-14,17 by Anne-Kathrin Kruse

The apparent reward of perpetrators and the suffering of victims is a divine paradox that compels the Christian church to recognise its antisemitic history of perpetration as a 'Cain deed' and to atone for it through daily repentance and solidarity.

Utterly nonsensical is the hatred of Jewish women and men that the church has stoked from the very beginning. She declared the people of God, the apple of God's eye, to be enemies of God. She herself became Cain, who could not bear the brother loved by God beside him.

The sermon interprets Ecclesiastes 8:10-14,17 as an expression of 'Häwel' (nonsense), by thematising the apparent reward of perpetrators and the suffering of the righteous. Through the example of the Nazi jurist Gerhard Klopfer, who died unpunished, the question of justice is made concrete. The text links the theological category of nonsense with the historical reality of the Shoah and contemporary antisemitic violence. The church is criticised as a 'Cain church' that, through its history of cultivating an image of the enemy against Jews, became a perpetrator. The quotation from Nelly Sachs serves to emphasise the necessity of keeping the wound open and not rushing to console. The sermon calls on the Christian congregation to acknowledge its own history of perpetration and to actively turn away from it. It urges the congregation to stand in solidarity with the victims of 7 October 2023 and with the present threat facing Jewish people.

So I have seen people who have done wrong, but received an honorable burial. Others, however, led a righteous life. They had to depart from the sanctuary, and were forgotten in the city. This too is hevel - utterly absurd. It is said: "Where no punishment follows, evil is quickly at work." Therefore grows in man the desire to do evil. It is also said: "A sinner can do evil a hundred times and still have a long life." But I know: Those who fear God will fare well. For they have reverence for him. But he who breaks the law will not fare well. He will also not have a long life. Rather, it will flee away like a shadow. For he has no reverence for God. There is something that happens on earth and makes no sense - hevel: There are people who are righteous. They fare as though they had done wrong. Conversely, there are people who have done wrong. Yet they fare as though they had behaved as the righteous. I said to myself, this too is hevel - utterly incomprehensible! Then I saw: all that God does under the sun, people cannot fathom. However hard they may strive, they cannot comprehend it. And if one thinks to possess all the wisdom of the world, he still does not comprehend it. Justice? First they lost their standing, their civil rights, their freedom, their place in public life, in the parks, the swimming pools, the shops and taverns, the public transport, in school, at the university. Then their professional and economic existence, friends, neighbors, colleagues, the apartment, their property, their physical and mental integrity, their loved ones, the chance to survive … Their names? Can anyone still remember them? A grave they did not have, they were turned to smoke, to ash, easily wiped away from memory. The Shoah was not a natural disaster that somehow broke over women and men of Jewish faith, Sinti:zze and Rom:nja, people with physical and mental disabilities, queer people, Communists, Social Democrats in Europe. For there is also a Dr. Gerhard Klopfer, jurist, participant of the Wannsee Conference. He belonged to the most influential and best-informed bureaucrats in the Party Chancellery of the NSDAP. In 1949 he was classified as "slightly incriminated." As a lawyer he settled in Ulm, where he died in 1987 highly respected. The obituary for someone who had influence over the murder of millions of people must have sounded like a cruel joke: "We mourn Dr. jur. Gerhard Klopfer, lawyer, after a life fulfilled for the benefit of all who were within his sphere of influence." Where is the justice then?? Everything is absurd, hevel? Crime seems to pay. It is said: "Where no punishment follows, evil is quickly at work." Therefore grows in man the desire to do evil. It is also said: "A sinner can do evil a hundred times and still have a long life." Most of the perpetrators, who were involved in torture and murder under National Socialism, were never held accountable for their crimes. Well-off, they spent their twilight years. But there are not only the desk perpetrators, also the executioners, the guard units, finally all who in some way profited from the disenfranchisement, persecution and murder. The collaborating population was offered substantial advantages: at the universities, in cultural institutions, on the labor market annoying competitors fell away. Entire economic sectors lived from the "Aryanization" of Jewish property. Everywhere Germans went bargain hunting. For them all this is not absurd at all. For them, crime makes sense. They made careers, enriched themselves - and at the end even believe themselves that they had earned all of this. And the history of guilt goes on – to this day… Where, after all, did the business come from that the grandparents had acquired in 1933? The furniture, the books, the dishes, the paintings, the grandfather's pocket watch, the great-aunt's jewelry? Did what I have since inherited also belong to these bargains? The plundering was part of the Holocaust. The Descendants of Abel and the Church of Cain Many who had survived the Shoah were tormented by feelings of guilt for having survived, while the parents, siblings, relatives had not. Many took their own lives – could not bear the meaninglessness and coldness – to go on living among people who acted as if nothing had happened. There are people who are righteous. It is as if they had done wrong. Kohelet, the collector of wisdom, calls them hevel – Abel, a vapor, a breath. Slain by his own brother Cain. His blood still cries out to heaven. The perpetrators are not tormented, they have acquired a thick skin – as if they had known nothing. Conversely, there are people who have done wrong. Yet it is as if they had behaved as righteous people. I told myself, that too is hevel – utterly incomprehensible! Utterly nonsensical is the hatred of Jewish women and men, which the Church has stoked from the very beginning. The People of God, the apple of God's eye, it declared enemies of God. It became Cain itself, who could not bear the brother loved by God beside him. We, the descendants of Cain, must let God ask us: Man, where are you? And where is your brother? What have you done? Unatoned crime continues to act. Cold meaninglessness continues to act. For the victims and their descendants, at times like a déjà vu in the hate-filled masses in the street and their chants, in insults, in outright threats and crimes. Not a day since the unimaginably cruel massacre by Hamas on October 7, 2023 passes without them. Instead of spontaneous expressions of solidarity or vigils: lead-heavy silence. Instead of compassion, supposed objectivity, "yes, but" – Silence makes us accomplices of those who want to silence Jewish women and men, make them invisible. Where does this incredible emotional coldness come from? And God's question to us Christians burns all the more: Where are you in all of this? Where are your brother and your sister? And what are you doing – here and today? Keep the Wound Open "Who among us may comfort?" asks Nelly Sachs in her poem "Chorus of Comforters." (Nelly Sachs, Gedichte, Frankfurt am Main 1977, 31f. in excerpts) We are gardeners, become flowerless. No healing herb can be planted From yesterday to tomorrow (…) The blossoms of comfort have sprouted too short They do not reach for the agony of a child's tear (…) Between yesterday and tomorrow Stands the Cherub Grinding with his wings the lightning of grief But his hands hold the rocks apart Of yesterday and tomorrow Like the edges of a wound That is to remain open That must not yet heal. Do not let the lightning of grief fall asleep The field of forgetting. Who among us may comfort? We are gardeners, become flowerless And we stand on a star that shines And we weep. Gardeners are comforters – at least they once were. But there are no more flowers, the healing herbs fail in their power after the crime, which is not spoken of, but is nonetheless present in the agony of a child's tear, in the lightning of grief, the field of forgetting and the wound that must be kept open and must not heal. In the face of people who have been struck speechless, who divide the world into a before and an after, in the face of experiences that at times carve themselves into the life story for a lifetime and call everything into question, we must not calm ourselves. What remains to us, the descendants of Cain, us Christians with a history of perpetration? God's hope in us. He trusts us to do it: Finally to turn around. Daily and actively. To learn to love brother and sister. They are like you. Amen. From the Preaching Workshop Four Questions on Sermon Preparation to Anne-Kathrin Kruse 1. What preaching situation do you have in mind? What I have in mind is the colorful and ever-new congregation of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin, where I regularly serve as a substitute. 2. What inspired you in the sermon preparation? Essential in a sermon for January 27th is the "commemoration" (Walter Benjamin), which encompasses past, present, and future, i.e., it is about our responsibility today, our future faith and action. The 7th of October has also changed my preaching. I owe valuable inspiration to Matthias Loerbrok's sermon from January 27, 2020. 3. What discovery will continue to accompany you? We hope in God that he will turn everything for the better. In doing so, one's own responsibility gladly recedes into the background. Conversely, God perhaps hopes that we humans will come to our senses and change. (Jer 26:3) 4. What does this sermon owe to the final editing? This sermon was preceded by particularly intensive exegetical and homiletical preliminary work (Anne-Kathrin Kruse, January 27 - Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism, Ecclesiastes 8:10-14,17, in: Studium in Israel (ed.), Sermon Meditations in the Christian-Jewish Context. For the Pericope Series 2 2025, 91-98). I also thank Anne Brisgen, who stepped in as a sermon coach and gave important hints. Was hast du getan? Ungesühntes Verbrechen wirkt weiter. Kalte Sinnlosigkeit wirkt weiter. 2. (Jer 26,3) 4.
