The active assumption of responsibility for orphans and the creation of a family environment for them is a central religious duty and a path to divine reward, legitimized by the example of the Prophet.

Let us make room for these children with another bed in our home and another plate at our dining table.

The text of the DITIB Religious Commission addresses the significance of foster families as a safe haven for children who, for various reasons, cannot live with their biological parents. It explains the legal differences between foster care and adoption, as well as the necessity of protecting privacy. The life of the Prophet Muhammad is cited as a religious role model, as he himself was an orphan and later took orphans and stepchildren into his family. The text calls on the Muslim community to actively care for children in need of protection and to offer them a warm home. This is presented as the fulfillment of a divine commandment and as a path to spiritual reward. The call is made on the occasion of the new Hijri year 1447, a time in which particular respect for life and human dignity is called for. It is emphasized that the care of orphans is a central responsibility of the community.

Foster Families – A Safe Haven for Children (27.06.2025) Brothers and sisters! Dear Muslims! Every child needs a secure family environment that protects, cares for, and satisfies all its material and emotional needs, so that it can complete its physical and mental development in a healthy manner. All responsible parents strive to raise their children as well as possible. Nevertheless, undesirable situations can arise within families. Unfortunately, it is often our youngest ones who must bear the consequences of negative events, such as physical or psychological problems, economic difficulties, divorce, illness, death, and restrictions on freedom. Foster care is a service for children who, for various reasons, cannot live with their biological parents. These children are placed under state supervision and in a suitable family from the time of their birth until the age of six, and for a specific fee until the completion of their eighteenth year of life. Foster parenting and adoption are legally distinct from one another. A child raised in the care of a foster family knows its biological parents and is not considered a legal heir. Since the foster parents of the child are not its biological parents, privacy must be treated with extreme sensitivity and respect during this period. For further information, you may contact the Attaché Office for Family and Social Services or the Department for Family and Social Services of DITIB. Honored Muslims! Even while the Prophet Muhammad (s) was still in his mother’s womb, his father passed away. When he was six years old, he lost his mother and became a full orphan. After the death of his mother, there were individuals in his life with whom he had emotional connections, whom he valued and loved as “his mother after his biological mother.” He grew up, became employed, married, and founded a family with Khadija (ra). Initially, he assumed spiritual fatherhood for Khadija’s children from her previous marriages. Then, he took on the care of his young nephew Ali. Although the Prophet of Mercy had his own children over time, he never ceased to open his arms, full of affection and compassion, to orphaned children. When the Messenger of Allah married Sawda (ra), he also became a father to the five children who entered the home with her. And as always, he was and is a wonderful role model. Brothers and sisters! Even today, there are many small children who, like our Prophet, have been left without parents and who thirst for help, affection, and compassion. We must not forget that children are a test. Let us not forget that the greatest reward is with Allah.[1] Let us not overlook that it is a command of Allah to care for orphaned children[2], and that it is one of the most beautiful Sunnas of our Prophet to take on the responsibility for children in need of protection. Let us also not forget that it is our responsibility to ensure that a child born with the Islamic fitrah (innate disposition)[3] is also raised in accordance with this nature. Let us not forget that the place for a child who needs familial security is not an orphanage, but a warm home. Let us always remember that the proximity to the Prophet in Paradise can be attained by caring for orphaned children.[4] I would like to take this opportunity to issue a call to all brothers and sisters who are in a position to do so: Let us make room for another bed in our home and place another plate at our dining table for these children. Let us be among those generous, good people about whom these children can say: “After my biological mother, she was my mother; after my biological father, he was my father.” Let us provide needy children with a warm home and a loving environment. Dear brothers and sisters! With yesterday, we have experienced the joy of reaching the year 1447 after the Hijra. Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar, belongs to the particularly reverent times in which even greater respect should be shown to life, property, as well as to the dignity and honor of the human being.[5] In this special time, it is extremely important to pay attention to the rights of others, to act more sensitively towards fellow human beings, and to be more mindful towards all living creatures. May Allah make the new Hijri year a year of peace, security, and brotherhood throughout the world. May it be a year in which the spilled blood and flowing tears come to an end and the oppressed can smile again. The DITIB Preaching Commission [1] Quran, al-Anfal, 8/28. [2] Quran, an-Nisa, 4/36. Pflegefamilien - ein sicherer Hafen für Kinder (27.06.2025) Geschwister! Werte Muslime!
