Rudolf Steiner was a systematic racist whose racist statements cannot be dismissed as mere product of the times or coincidence, and the anthroposophical movement actively denies this legacy.
The race-discriminating statements in Rudolf Steiner's works are to be considered particularly grave, as they are by no means accidental products or racist stereotypes conditioned by the spirit of the times.
The text argues that Rudolf Steiner made racist statements that cannot be dismissed as mere product of the times or an accident. The author quotes Steiner's own writings, in which he arranges races hierarchically and designates certain peoples as 'decadent' or 'dying out.' He sets these quotations against the statements of Jost Schieren, who defends Steiner as 'not a racist.' The author criticizes anthroposophical representatives for denying or relativizing Steiner's racism. He refers to historians such as Helmut Zander and Peter Staudenmaier, who classify Steiner's racial doctrine as systematic and esoterically grounded. The author also describes his own experiences from a Waldorf teacher training program, in which racist statements by Steiner were taught as unproblematic. He refers to the decision of the BPjM, which classified Steiner's books as racist. The text calls for an honest engagement with Steiner's racist legacy.

There is a decades-long anthroposophical tradition of denying Rudolf Steiner's racism. In the journal Erziehungskunst, published by the Federation of Free Waldorf Schools, Jost Schieren, professor at the anthroposophical Alanus University, continues this old tradition under the new label "Waldorf & Science." In his article "Anthroposophy in the Criticism," Schieren writes: "Rudolf Steiner was not a racist." A statement that cannot be surpassed in clarity, right?
"Andreas, I didn't quite manage it, I actually felt sick (…)," says Hans Trutnau, author of the Humanist Press Service, in his commentary on Rudolf Steiner's racism. Hans Trutnau has done it: read a lecture by Steiner in the original!
What one encounters there is a very special mixture of hard-core racism and Steiner's most absurd justifications, which one can ask whether they are still properly characterized as "esoteric," or whether "delusions" would not be more apt. A short excerpt from the lecture will certainly not do justice to Hans Trutnau's experience, but conveys at least a first impression, quote Rudolf Steiner:
"The Negro therefore has a strong instinctual life. And because he actually has the sunny, light and warmth, there on the body surface in his skin, his entire metabolism proceeds as if he were being cooked from within by the sun itself. Hence his instinctual life. (…) And so it is really very interesting: On the one hand one has the black race, which is the most earthly. If it goes west, it dies out. One has the yellow race, which is in the middle between earth and the world-all. If it goes east, it becomes brown, affiliates itself too much with the world-all, dies out. The white race is the future one, is the race that creates in spirit. (…) And so in the future it will be precisely from the racial characteristics that such things will emerge, which one must know, in order to properly position oneself in life." 1
On this, Prof. Helmut Zander says:
"These statements, which Steiner made in 1923, two years before his death, are not an industrial accident in his thinking, but rather a summarizing final stroke under convictions that have roots in his childhood and which he had evolutionarily charged since his theosophical period and repeatedly expressed. 'Degenerate Indians' and 'passive Negro souls' already belonged to his worldview inventory in 1909, in addition to comparable notions regarding Judaism (…)." 2
Helmut Zander's assessment of Steiner's racism is supported by historian Prof. Peter Staudenmaier in an interview with the hpd:
"Starting from Blavatsky's 3 developmental-theoretical approach, Steiner built an evolutionary doctrine of peoples and racial groups, according to which the human soul progresses spiritually and physically through successive incarnations in ever 'higher' races. This ladder of races stands at the center of Steiner's esoteric understanding of the overall development of humanity, from being bound in matter to spiritual perfection." 4
Jost Schieren overlooks the clear contextualizations of Prof. Zander and Prof. Staudenmaier, which he knows well, and declares Rudolf Steiner, who is regarded as a prophet by anthroposophists, out of necessity a pitiable – "tragic"! – victim of the spirit of the times, quote Schieren:
"Regarding the accusations of racism and antisemitism, it must be noted that Rudolf Steiner, in a few, however very weak and simply bad passages of his work – as perhaps a tragic colonial legacy or also as an elevated human image building on German Idealism – presents an absolutely unacceptable Eurocentric cultural chauvinism."
However, the indexing application by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors and Youth against two books by Rudolf Steiner, addressed to the Federal Review Office for Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM), states: "The race-discriminating statements in Rudolf Steiner's works are to be regarded as particularly grave, since they are by no means chance products or racist stereotypes conditioned by the spirit of the times. Rather, they are to be seen as manifestations of a specifically Steinerian esoteric racial science (…)." On 6 September 2007, the BPjM ruled that Steiner's books contain racist content and are "in parts to be regarded as inciting to racial hatred or as race-discriminating."
Schieren fights by all means, not only for the reputation of Anthroposophy, but also for his job: who still needs a professor at an anthroposophical university of applied sciences when the general public learns who Rudolf Steiner really was? At the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences, Schieren is not alone in his attempt to invent a new Steiner. But is that sufficient as an explanation? Does Anthroposophy perhaps still produce a distorted perception in the believer?
For it is not so difficult to notice that something is "not right" with Rudolf Steiner. Before my training as a Waldorf teacher at the Seminar for Waldorf Pedagogy Berlin, I did not yet know who Rudolf Steiner was. I only learned this gradually during the daily Steiner reading customary at the seminar – here an excerpt from my account of my experience ("L" is "Lichte"):
"(…) At some point, during the 'General Human Science,' open conflict then breaks out. Steiner says: 'But is there anything that we do in life in which we could not have the consciousness that we could carry it out even better? It would be sad if we could be completely satisfied with anything, for there is nothing that we could not also do better. And it is precisely through this that the human being who stands somewhat higher in culture is distinguished from the one who stands lower, in that the latter always wants to be satisfied with himself.' 'Brilliant!' thinks L., 'the perfect short guide to being unhappy, never being able to be satisfied with anything.'
But what is this about culturally higher and lower standing human beings? Where does this lead? And it is precisely this question that he poses to the lecturer, who waves it away, attempts to relativize: 'That is only meant as an incentive, to never slacken in one's efforts …' 'Yes, but just think that through to the end, where are we going to end up? I find that is a dangerous thought …' L. cannot finish his sentence, for a seminar participant already interrupts him: 'Of course there are higher and lower standing human beings! I don't see the problem!' 'The problem is that the one who feels himself to be higher standing also claims rights for himself …' 'Do you perhaps have a problem with hierarchies?' 'I find that it goes a bit further – and in Germany one has unfortunately seen how far the higher and lower standing can go – that is dangerous!' A female seminar participant ends the 'discussion': 'There is no doubt at all that I as a human being stand higher than, for example, someone who is sitting in prison!' L. is speechless and the hour is over. (…)" 5
No "justiciable" racism, but the foundation for it: higher standing and lower standing human beings. Jost Schieren seems not to see this – or would he still organize courses on Rudolf Steiner's "General Human Science as the Foundation of Pedagogy"?
At the Waldorf seminar I later "learned" that Native Americans were a "dying race" because they "lacked the prerequisites for a cultural higher development." Not an error of the lecturer, but a free rendition of Rudolf Steiner, quote:
"We have before us in the American race a primitive indigenous population that is far, far behind, also with regard to religious world outlook. (…) But the Europeans have ascended to a higher cultural level, while the Indians have stood still and thereby come into decadence. This process of development must always be taken into account. It can be represented as follows. In the course of millennia our planet changes, and this change also conditions a development of humanity. The side branches that no longer fit into the conditions become decadent. We therefore have a straight developmental trunk and departing side branches that decay (see drawing)." 6
The "drawing" that Rudolf Steiner speaks of: "decadent offshoot ape race," "decadent offshoot Indians" …
(Rudolf Steiner Complete Works, "Humanity's Development and the Knowledge of Christ," GA 100, p. 245)
But fortunately Prof. Jost Schieren has assured us: "Rudolf Steiner was not a racist." And that is certainly so, because "Science," "Waldorf & Science"!

Racist statements about the "Indians" can also be found in other books of the Rudolf Steiner Complete Works (GA), for example in "The Mission of Individual Folk Souls in Connection with the Germanic-Nordic Mythology," GA 121:
"Finally, on the glandular system – only by way of all the other systems – acts that which we can designate as the abnormal spirits of form, which have their center in Saturn. There we have in everything that we have to designate as the Saturn race, in everything to which we have to ascribe the Saturn character, something to seek that so to speak brings together, closes together that which again leads to the twilight, whose development in a certain way brings to a conclusion, and that to a real conclusion, to a dying away. How this action on the glandular system expresses itself, we see in the Indian race. On this is based the mortality of the same, its disappearance. The Saturn influence acts through all the other systems finally on the glandular system. This separates out the hardest parts of man, and one can therefore say that this dying away consists in a kind of ossification, as this in the exterior clearly reveals itself. Look at the pictures of the old Indians, and you will be able as it were to grasp with your hands the described process, in the decline of this race."
The spelling of the quotations from Rudolf Steiner has been left as in the original.

Of course many thought so
Of course many thought so. But is the thinker not also the one who creates or sharpens this thinking? The Biedermeier are also dangerous. But without arsonists they do not come to such thoughts. Steiner was not a follower of the Zeitgeist. He was a thinker ahead of his time. His unreflected attitude and statement regarding the hubris of the white race makes him a racist.

Dazu sagt Prof. Helmut Zander:
Diesen Entwickelungsvorgang muß man immer beachten.
