Radical dissent and the willingness to question oneself are the only effective means of securing intellectual progress and democratic resilience in a polarized society.

That you hold the struggle over positions up as the lifeblood of democratic development makes for much of what I like and appreciate about you.

The text is a laudatio by Klaus Lederer for his colleague Jan Feddersen on the occasion of his retirement. Lederer praises Feddersen's ability to understand radical dissent as a productive driving force for democratic development. He criticizes the increasing dominance of click activism and identity-based exclusion in public debate. As a counter-proposal, open conflict and self-questioning are highlighted as means of intellectual enrichment. Lederer refers to joint projects such as the 'Queer.Macht.Politik' booklet and the 'taz.lab'. He warns against hardening in old age and calls for keeping the connecting elements in view despite political tensions. The shared rejection of antisemitism, antifeminism, and hatred of queer people is named as a central ethical foundation.

A farewell greeting from Klaus Lederer to Jan Feddersen on his retirement, which not only looks back on joint projects and productive disputes, but above all appreciates Jan’s attitude: remaining open, being allowed to dissent, and taking one another seriously precisely because of this. Klaus Lederer, Member of the House of Deputies (Photo: Ben Gross) Editorial note: The following text by Klaus Lederer was published on August 20, 2026, in a special print edition of the taz, produced on the occasion of Jan Feddersen’s retirement. This is an honor awarded to long-serving and meritorious employees of the house. In his eulogy, Lederer has characterized Jan’s work in the most excellent manner. Jan’s unique combination of a life-affirming, warm-hearted openness and an intellectual curiosity that goes hand in hand with a pleasure in controversial debate not only brings together a variety of different personalities in his environment, but also generates something intellectually invigorating. In particular, the initiative Queer Nations benefits from this spirit that Jan lives so intensely. Every new issue of the “Yearbook of Sexualities” testifies to this, as does every Queer Lecture. As his contribution clearly reads, Klaus Lederer certainly had not only Jan as a taz editor in mind when writing, but also his work beyond that. We at IQN believe that Lederer’s words should reach not only the guests of the taz farewell party, and therefore we are pleased that we may publish the contribution on our blog with kind permission. By Klaus Lederer So, retirement, then. I still can’t quite imagine it. We were just sitting together recently in front of the taz café, you with your distinctive feature, the Tupperware box for tobacco. You already had that when we first met. How long ago was that, now? I can no longer reconstruct the place or the time. There was so much, in all those years. I remember your contribution to our little book “Queer.Power.Politics,” which was published in 2013 by Männerschwarm in Hamburg. The dynamics of queer emancipation are associated with hard contradictions. These contradictions cannot simply be silenced because it is uncomfortable. Acknowledging and accepting them as challenges unites us. Even though we answer many questions with opposing tendencies, to this day. Jan Feddersen – Dispute as Further Development There was also our attempt to advance an Elberskirchen-Hirschfeld House for Berlin. Some of that, we would perhaps both approach differently today. But that is spilled milk. The idea is still good. I find it very regrettable that it ultimately failed. And so today there is only a “needs analysis” for a “Rainbow House” – whose realization is, however, further from the goal than we ever were with “E2H.” Meanwhile, the pressure on queer places continues to grow, many of them with a long history and as indispensable parts of our infrastructure. That you hold the dispute over positions as the breathing air of democratic further development makes up a great deal of what I like and appreciate about you. I know that for others, that is precisely a stumbling block. But how are we to move forward if we do not even mark radical dissent, let alone understand it as a driving force for intellectual and practical progress? For me, that is absolutely central in times when dispute and discourse increasingly obey the laws of the market of attention, and click-activism rarely achieves more than serving one’s own bubble and fueling identity-based demarcation from the Other. taz.lab as a productive space for dispute Rarely have I heard a more beautiful request than: “Klaus, you must deliver a text with which I absolutely disagree.” To perceive self-questioning not as a threat but as an enrichment, that is – here I may allow myself to paraphrase Rosa Luxemburg in a somewhat grandiose manner – the light and air of life for every individual’s further development, but also for social progress. In a certain way, it is therefore logical that you have been co-responsible for the “taz.lab” debate space for many years. And on more than one occasion, I was allowed to be present. I have certainly not become dumber because of it. To this day, the “taz.lab” is one of the increasingly rare places where we do not merely confirm each other and risklessly assure ourselves of the correctness of our positions. It is a call to the courage to use our own reason. Hopefully, it will remain so. The front page of the special edition in honor of Jan. Common solutions to the questions of our time I wish you that you retain this openness to the other position and continue to work for all of us becoming wiser together. Retirees are famously never in a hurry, at least those who are robust and know how to fill their time wisely. But I also wish you more time with your husband and your friendly circle. And I wish you that you do not harden. With advancing age, that is supposedly not getting easier. Very little is more unbearable than age-related stubbornness, being right for its own sake, and obsessive provocation for its own sake. The situation is too serious for that; we can all not afford it. In the face of the authoritarian shaping of our societies, in the face of stronger forces on all continents who are networked and everywhere want to turn back the clock with the same arguments, it becomes important again to be aware – alongside the dividing, the radical dissent – of what unites us. And to seek, together, rather inquiringly, tentatively than noisily, solutions to the not always simple questions of our time. It is good to know that we are always together on one point: Antisemitism, antifeminism, and hatred toward all people who deviate from the heterosexual norm condense in many minds into comprehensive world-explanation patterns – as bridge ideologies that also connect milieus that otherwise have little to do with each other. Clarity is needed here. That is not always easy and sometimes makes one lonely. But it does no good. Because there is still so much to do. To a fruitful retirement, dear Jan, and to much further productive argument! Klaus Lederer is a non-partisan politician; until 2024, he was a member of the party Die Linke. He remains a member of the parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives. From 2016 to 2023, he was Mayor of Berlin as well as Senator for Culture and Europe.

Von Klaus Lederer Nun also Rente.
