Individual faith practice and social responsibility for the weak and needy are inseparably connected; one who prays but withholds care or practices hypocrisy does not fulfill their faith.

Just as the servant of Allah bears responsibility toward his Creator, he must also be sensitive toward the creatures. Acts of faith are performed for Allah, the Exalted, yet their fruits encompass all living beings, especially human beings.

The sermon of the DITIB Sermon Commission takes Sura al-Ma'un (107) as its starting point and connects it with a hadithic statement about God's gaze upon hearts and deeds. The central thesis is that individual faith practice and social responsibility are inseparably linked: one who prays but repudiates orphans, does not feed the poor, and withholds support does not act in the spirit of faith. The text admonishes sincerity in prayer, warns against hypocrisy and ostentation, and simultaneously calls for concrete care for the weak, the needy, and the helpless. The message is directed at the gathered congregation but is formulated universally in the form 'O human being!'. There is no explicit reference to contemporary political or social events; the reference is everyday-practical and ethical-moral. The text concludes with a supplication for the preservation of the balance between piety and responsibility.

﷽ Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? For such is the one who drives away the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor. So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer—those who make show [of themselves] and withhold [people's] necessities. And the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: But He looks at your hearts and your deeds. Surah al-Ma'un: The Balance Between Faith Practice and Responsibility (15.08.2025) Dear brothers and sisters! Esteemed believers! There is a connection between individual faith practices and social responsibilities. Just as the servant of Allah bears responsibility toward his Creator, he must also be sensitive toward the created beings. Faith practices are performed for Allah, the Exalted, yet their fruits encompass all living beings, especially human beings. Surah al-Ma'un, which I will address in today's Friday sermon, thematizes in an impressive manner this balance between individual faith practice and our social duties. In Surah al-Ma'un, our Lord says in essence: "Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? For such is the one who drives away the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor. So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer—those who make show [of themselves] and withhold [people's] necessities." [1] Esteemed believers! The noble Quran is a book of life; it was revealed for life and grants life. We should understand every single surah of the Quran as a divine lesson that beautifies our life and put it into practice. When we reflect on Surah al-Ma'un, it conveys to us the following messages: O human being! Never deny the divine laws established by Allah! Never belittle the religious values! Never forget the Day of Reward and Punishment! [2] Always remember the Day of Reckoning, on which no one can help another! [3] Strive for a life for which you can easily render your account! O human being! If you believe in the Hereafter, then be a helper to the helpless! Be sensitive and attentive toward the weak of society! Support orphans, half-orphans, and those in need! Stand up for the poor who depend on a bite of bread and a sip of water! Be someone who encourages and guides people to such righteous deeds. O human being! Never forget that every faith practice has a meaning and a purpose! Just as you are responsible toward your Lord, be compassionate toward all living beings and mindful of the environment! Never harbor the thought "My heart is pure," which leads you to neglect your servitude toward Allah! But do not also neglect your human relationships with the attitude "I do perform my faith practices!" O human being! Allah, the Exalted, will not look at your outward appearance; He will not pay attention to your possessions, your wealth, or your riches. Allah will look at your heart, at your intention, at your actions. [4] O human being! Be sincere in your faith practices! Be no hypocrite; do not mix any show into your piety! Do not perform your faith practices to please people, but to attain the pleasure of your Creator! O human being! Be, within your means, an example in goodness and prevent no one from doing good! Always live your life with the awareness that you are seeing Allah! May Allah, our exalted Lord, make us among those servants who maintain the balance between faith practice and responsibility. ﷽ . Sei in deinen Glaubenspraxen aufrichtig! Sei kein Heuchler, mische deiner Frömmigkeit keine Zurschaustellung hinzu!
