True life consists in putting Christ first, remaining faithful in all things, not being ashamed of the faith, living the Gospel practically, and purifying the heart through repentance.
The text documents the weekly sermon of Pope Tawadros II. of the Coptic Orthodox Church on Wednesday in St. Peter's Church in Cairo. On the occasion of the Coptic New Year (Year of the Martyrs 1743), the Pope continues his series "Spiritual Laws for Life" and addresses the law "It is Christ who lives in me." He derives five practical steps from Philippians 1:21: having Christ in the first place, being faithful in small things, not being ashamed of the faith, living the Gospel through works, and purifying the heart through repentance. Biblical figures such as Abraham, Joseph, and the three young men, as well as Coptic martyrs such as Abanoub and Marina, serve as examples. The Pope emphasizes that the commemoration of the martyrs encompasses their entire life as witness, not only their death. He encourages the faithful to begin the new year in a state of joy and purity and refers to the joy of the Apostle Paul in prison.

His Holiness the Pope: Five Steps to Live “For Me, to Live Is Christ”: Let Christ be first, faithfulness even in small matters, do not be ashamed of your Christ or of your faith, live your Gospel through the commandment and keep it clearly before you, purify your heart through repentance.
His Holiness Pope Tawadros II delivered his weekly sermon during the Wednesday gathering this evening from St. Peter’s Church in Abbassia, and the sermon was broadcast via Christian satellite channels and the C.O.C channel belonging to the Church’s Media Center on the internet.
Upon His Holiness’s arrival at the church, he was welcomed by a number of Metropolitan and Diocesan Bishops, the church’s priests, Dr. Youssef Boutros-Ghali, Chairman of the Church Council, and Dr. Mourad Wahba, a member of the Council.
His Holiness prayed the Vespers prayers with the participation of the attending Church Hierarchs, the General Vicar of the Patriarchy in Cairo, and a number of priests and monks.
After Vespers, the church choir sang a number of church hymns on the occasion of the Coptic New Year, and His Holiness praised them. His Holiness also honored those who passed the General Secondary Certificate and obtained higher qualifications from among the children of St. Peter’s Church.
Before the start of the sermon, His Holiness congratulated the children of the Church on the occasion of the Feast of Nayrouz, saying: “Happy New Year to you all on the occasion of the Feast of Nayrouz, which we call the Feast of the Martyrs, and the Coptic New Year 1743. The months of this year are the same as the months of the ancient Egyptian year, which begin with the month of Thout.”
He added: “It is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate in this church that bears the names of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and also bears the names of the martyrs, whose martyrdom took place ten years ago in December 2016.” His Holiness also praised the ongoing renovations in the church building.
In the sermon, His Holiness continued the series “Spiritual Laws for Life,” and today spoke about the law: “For Me, to Live Is Christ.” He read part of the first chapter of the Epistle of our Apostle Paul to the Philippians, verses (21–26), pointing out that the martyrs knew the value of Christ and the salvation of Christ, on the occasion of the beginning of the new Coptic year (the Year of the Martyrs) and the celebration of the Feast of “Nayrouz.”
His Holiness clarified that our celebration of the martyrs is a celebration of their entire lives, not just the day of their martyrdom, because their entire lives were a witness to Christ.
His Holiness addressed five steps for us to live the verse “For Me, to Live Is Christ” (Phil 1: 21), as follows:
1. Let Christ be first in your life:
The example of Abraham, the father of the fathers, when the message came to him to sacrifice his only son and offer him as a burnt offering, he obeyed God because God is first. Similarly, the martyr Abanoub, who refused to deny Christ and said: “I cannot leave my Lord Jesus Christ and worship idols.” Therefore, the first step is that Christ be first in your life: “Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Matt 10: 37).
2. Faithfulness even in small matters:
The Holy Scripture says: “He who is faithful in little is also faithful in much” (Luke 16: 10). Therefore, you must care for faithfulness in small matters, such as not cheating in exams, faithfulness in attendance within the church, and in speech and appointments: “Be faithful unto death (to the whole life), and I will give you the crown of life (in heaven)” (Rev 2: 10). Also, faithfulness in the gaze of the eye, in the hearing of the ear, and in the feelings of the heart, such as Joseph the Just, and the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste (in the fourth century) who confessed their faith. Thus, faithfulness must be in every aspect of life.
3. Do not be ashamed of Christ:
The Holy Scripture says: “Whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed” (Luke 9: 26). You must take pride in your Christ and in your church, for your Christ became incarnate and was crucified for you, and in order to grant us forgiveness and salvation from our sins. Christ is more precious than any human gaze, so let us not be ashamed of Him. The example of the three young men who refused to worship the statue and were not ashamed of their faith, and the king said to them: “Who is the God who will save you from my hands?” (Dan 3: 15). And when they were thrown into the furnace, the fire did not touch them. And the martyr Marina, who was not ashamed of witnessing to Christ.
4. Live your Gospel and apply the commandment constantly:
The Holy Scripture says: “Only live as is worthy of the Gospel (commandment) of Christ” (Phil 1: 27), and that the Gospel becomes lived in you. The example of Saint Tabitha, the servant in the first church, who used to sew clothes for the needy, thus she lived the Gospel by serving others. Therefore, make your Gospel clear in you and live the commandment, for you know the way to heaven through your Gospel: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Ps 37: 4).
5. Life in the purity of the heart through repentance:
Keep your heart always pure through repentance: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matt 5: 8). Wash your heart with repentance to the end
A day in life, for he who has a pure heart sees God, just as the martyr was not a person seeking death, but rather a person clinging to Christ, and he remained clinging until death came to him, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith, and finally there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:7), and the goal that Christ asks of us is that the heart be pure, therefore He gave us life as an opportunity for the purity of the heart, therefore in the Synaxarion we begin each day with the word “We celebrate,” because we live in a state of joy with these saints.
His Holiness the Pope recommended reading the first chapter of the Epistle of our Apostle Paul to the Philippians, and to pay attention to the fact that the Apostle Paul wrote it while in prison, yet it expresses joy and a strong bond with Christ.
