In Christ dwells the fullness of God, and baptism is the exchange of the old, sinful life for a new, immortal life with him, which gives true fulfilment.
It is about the exchange of a life. It is about my really handing over to Jesus what I had before and exchanging it for a new, better life with him.
The text is a sermon delivered before a baptism in a Free Evangelical Church in Kiel. The preacher unfolds Colossians 2:8–15 and highlights four thoughts from it. The core is that in Christ dwells the fullness of God and that therefore true fulfilment is given instead of the empty promises of other systems. Baptism is interpreted as a sign of dying and rising with Christ, not as a mere outward ritual. The preacher compares the new life with Christ to a full tank of fuel as opposed to an empty battery. He emphasises that the joy in Jesus remains even under losses and that no one can be taken away. The text contains everyday examples such as partnership, occupation, career, holiday, and cruises, in order to illustrate the transience of earthly fulfilment. Finally, baptism is described as a genuine exchange of the old life for a new life with Christ.

My dear ones, I am glad to be able to preach today at this special service before a baptism. And also to unfold this topic, the newness of life with Christ, with you a little, based on a Bible text from the Epistle to the Colossians. Willi has already said it, there are always situations like that, or he brought an example. Perhaps you know it, that you remember, how was it actually before? How was it when we still lived somewhere else? How was it when I still had this or that job? How was it actually before? There are always new beginnings in life. And yet the beginning, when one starts to live with Jesus, is something that surpasses all of this in a certain sense. That is at least so to say, what will become clear in our passage shortly. I would like to read us the sermon text now from Colossians 2, verses 8 to 15. It says there, beware of those in 8, who want to ensnare you with an empty, deceptive philosophy. With a way of thinking of purely human origin, in which everything revolves around the principles that rule in this world and not around Christ. Yet it is in Christ that the fullness of the entire Godhead dwells in bodily form. And you have part in this fullness, because you are connected with Christ, with him who is the head of all powers and authorities. Connected with him, you have also been circumcised, however this does not concern an external intervention on your body, but the putting off of the human nature dominated by sin. That is the circumcision that takes place under Christ. You were buried together with him when you were baptized. And because you are connected with him, you have also been raised up together with him, for you have trusted in the power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. Yes, God has made you alive together with Christ. For you were dead, dead because of your transgressions and because of your uncircumcised, sinful nature. But God has forgiven us all our transgressions. The certificate of debt, which was issued in our name and whose content accused us, because we had not fulfilled the demand of the law, he has declared no longer valid. He has nailed it to the cross and thereby eliminated it forever. And the godhostile powers and authorities he has disarmed and displayed their powerlessness before the whole world. Through Christ he has achieved a triumphant victory over them. Four thoughts on this Bible text, on this passage. The first: true fulfillment instead of teacher's promises. A quick look again at the location of our text. That is sometimes already an insight in itself. So, Paul actually always structures his letters similarly and he usually always starts directly with a polite thank you and greeting. Something about the congregation. And then it is about Jesus and then as the second main point he always describes again, what changes when we live with Jesus compared to the life before. And only then come, so to speak, the details, how does that affect everyday life, in family, in work and in all other things. And now it is again about the principle. What actually is the central change? And Paul makes it clear here that it is Jesus who brings true fulfillment instead of teacher's promises. In every time and perhaps also in every life phase there are things that want to promise us. This is now the ultimate fulfillment for your life. What it is, that changes a little over the course of life. When one is young, it is perhaps above all the right partner and the right fun in life and such things. Then at some point, the question about the job, about the career, about money, and perhaps later then, that things go well with the children. And in my generation it is now like that with the Boomers. Those are now some who sail
so to speak, on the cruise ship. And there I have the impression with the one or the other that the main content is now always a bit the question of how do we have a nice vacation. So for those who can afford it. So here, which cruise is the next one? And I think that also always departs from Kiel here or every now and then. And so on. All of these are things where people a bit occupy themselves. So that fulfills me or that or that. Among the Colossians there were people who had the idea beyond that, or there were two great streams of thought that had influenced the Colossians. One was a very Jewish-influenced group, who were very legalistic and paid attention to it. You have to do everything exactly the same way, as it is so to speak not only in the Old Testament, but beyond that in the laws of the Jews. And another group, which was a bit esoterically influenced, there it was always about having to pay attention to the sun, moon and the cosmic powers. And if you do that, then finally a fulfillment would come into your life. But Paulus calls that empty, deceptive philosophy. So nothing against philosophy, in and of itself. But if it does not lead us to the goal to Christ, then it is of no use. And he sets against it another fullness, the fullness in Christ. It is indeed Christ, in whom the whole fullness of God's nature dwells in bodily form. He makes three things clear, why we can truly expect the fullness from Christ. On the one hand, he is the fulfillment of a long story. The entire history of the people of Israel from the Old Testament. He is the one they had been waiting for a long time. And finally he has come as the long-promised Messiah. And he gives the whole story a meaning. And the second is that God with the whole fullness of his nature dwells bodily in Jesus. That means, when we look at Jesus, when we think about Jesus, then we see God himself. In his character, in his full power and in his glory. That is the reason why we have such times, as we have just had, where we sing these songs, because that should actually always align us precisely with this Jesus and his fullness. That is why it is at that point never important whether I can sing the songs particularly beautifully or not even yet, whether they please me or not, but whether I align myself in this time on that or not. I always have the impression, men find it a bit more difficult with singing in congregations and here I always a bit more difficult. And then I always try to make it clear to myself and others. It is about it being like a spiritual training, where we really align ourselves on him. A time that belongs to him and where it is important. Perhaps you think after the sermon there is still a very beautiful song. Perhaps we think about it that it is about aligning ourselves so completely on him, because in him truly the fullness is. And this fullness, Jesus himself, grants comprehensive, deep joy. More than anything else in life and one feels that in the course of life, almost everything can be taken from you. Your professional success can be taken from you, your reputation, health can be taken from you and everything. The joy in Jesus is truly something from the first moment to the last breath and beyond that, no one can take that from you. And that is the great and special thing about him. And therefore we should in life, the other things that I have mentioned, they are all not necessarily bad. A cruise does not have to be bad either. I have not done one yet, but I would also like to do one. Willi, shall we do it together? Right? Willi does not want to. So okay, I have to find someone else. Good, so you understand that it is not at all that these things would be bad. But they will not bring the fulfillment that we actually with our life, with
of our soul seek. And exactly, that is also made clear by the next section: full tank instead of empty battery. It's about, basically, that's a little continuation of that. Paul makes it clear here again, how did the people back then practically try to get fulfillment and also God's approval. That was important for them to get. And he refers here especially to the Jewish part, which also existed in Colossae. And there, the observance of external rites and also circumcision was a very big topic. Circumcision also plays a role in the Old Testament. It was the sign of the covenant between God and his people, Israel. And over the course of the centuries, it was found, however, that it was so to speak only an external ritual anymore. That it was not something that would have changed the life and the heart of people, but it was done. No one could remember that either. They were eight days old, the babies and so on. And also other laws from the Jewish cult, from the Pentateuch, were often external signs and the inner connection was lacking. And Paul now sets baptism in contrast to that. And baptism stands here for the dying and rising with Jesus. The old, sinful nature. And you will experience that on your own body later, at least the two of you, properly. It goes so fast that one has to think it through once beforehand. You can't do that during the baptism. So, during... what? It can also take longer, Willi offers. Okay, you need to clarify that with him, please. So, baptism actually stands for the dying of the old person, the old nature. And what rises again then stands for the resurrection with Jesus. The old, sinful nature is put off. With Christ, a new person rises. And now one could say, but isn't baptism for some also only an external act, like circumcision? Aren't there people who are baptized. But the faith is only superficial, without consequences in life. And there one can actually only agree, where baptism is only an external action. Where people have not buried their old life with Christ. Where they do not do it in faith, then everything really remains as it was. That is why it is also... That is why so to speak the confession belongs to it, also what we will still hear after the sermon. That belongs to it, that someone also tells a story and can tell one. And also tells how the faith in Jesus really began. It is not about routines with these things or with these habits. It is also not about stubborn struggling for renewal, where then nothing really becomes new. It is not about a baptism certificate. It is not about working as a member in the congregation and even a membership in a free evangelical congregation, in the end, is of no use if the decisive thing is missing. This living relationship. Full tank instead of empty battery, that does not apply if we trust in ourselves with self-righteousness. We then run empty if we build on ourselves. It is about the exchange of a life. It is about the fact that I really hand over to Jesus what I had before and that I exchange for a new, better life with him. That is perhaps still comparable to a wedding, where I then also say, no, the old life, I leave it behind in a certain sense. I will completely share the new life with someone else. At least that radical is it. Actually even more radical. It is about a real exchange, where you exchange something that is perishable, that will die, for something from Christ, his life, which will never perish. And the practical consequence is that we do not have to live by our own strength and that we ourselves, our own past, our own debts, no longer, that we no longer have to somehow settle that alone. The next verse 14, the debt stone, which was issued in our name and whose content us
because we had not met the demand of the law, he declared it no longer valid. He nailed it to the cross and thereby defeated it forever. The word sin-debt has several aspects and dimensions in the Bible. Sin and debt arise where we become guilty toward other people through our actions, where we harm them, do things that were not right. The consequence of sin is then separation, broken relationships, and we actually experience both constantly. And the newspapers report about it, the news report about it, that our world is full of it and that we actually have no answer to it, how do we deal with all these things. A third dimension is, however, the fundamental one, that sin also means that we miss the target, that we live past God's will, live without him. And that means that even if, if certain things are put right, that actually the same thing happens again from the beginning. I want to then give an example, I have often been told by people who work in debt counseling that it usually does not help at all if one simply settles the debts of a debtor, if one simply balances the account. Rather, that then, if one does not talk about the causes, for example about an underlying addiction or about relationship problems or about other behaviors, then actually the same thing always happens again from the beginning. Because the same system runs its course. And Christians know, however, that it actually needs a system change at that point. That God has solved our problem, our debt problem, means, includes both. That he forgives us the debt for concrete actions and also broken relationships, but also that we have completely lived past him. God does not make a debt restructuring agreement with us, where we then have to pay things off again over seven years or so, but he gives radically, he makes a new beginning. And whoever trusts in Jesus gets all sin problems, all at once solved, all debt problems. He gets new goals for his life, experiences from the power of the Holy Spirit and another new life and also being incorporated into the community of God's people, which is called the church. And baptism is therefore always something, not only purely individual, but baptism also means, yes, I am doing something with God, but God and I exchanged life, but I am also always being incorporated into a new community, to practice the new life with Christ, to be on the road with others in his kingdom, to continue to develop. And all of this, new goals, settlement of the account balance and a new community, all of this we receive in baptism. And that is no burden, that is not something or other, but only these three things together, they help us truly to live new and different, what a gift to be allowed to live like that. And the consequence of that can actually only be that we are so grateful, as we also sang in the song before the sermon, that real joy comes. A last thought, winner, team instead of relegation. Paul describes here once again the relationship of Jesus Christ to the other powers and authorities in this world. And he uses a rather drastic image, one could say. So he does not make it somehow small, but he uses a strong image, that in Christ we absolutely have the victory, that we are in the winner's team. If one hears something in Germany about Christians and about the church, then one actually has the impression, well, Christians, if you somehow belong to Christians to a parish church or free church, then you are actually not in the winner's team, but then you are in a somewhat odd club and be careful that they don't do anything odd to you. There are above all two points of criticism in our time, that
People keep coming back to faith and the church. One thing is that faith is sometimes considered not modern or scientific, but rather dusty and naive, one could go on at length about that. I just want to say at this point that science actually received a great boost with the Christian faith, because the Christians back then, the scientists, also assumed that the world, as God created it, is ordered, that it makes sense, and therefore it can be researched. If the whole thing were just chaos or whatever, it would not make any sense at all. There are incredibly many good arguments for the faith. So for those who have the time, there is this event again next weekend at the Geistliches Rüstzentrum Kreling, where a lot is thought about this. The other thing that is also still attributed to Christians today is that they discriminate against others with their standards and ideas about ethics, about how one should live. The important point at this point is that Christians actually do not want to force other people to do this or have to say that now everyone in Kiel has to live the way the Free Evangelical Church does. That is not the point at all. We are a free church from this tradition, we come from it, but we assume that the Bible actually has good standards for the people who live with Christ. If one does not want to live with Christ at all, then it also makes no sense to necessarily hold oneself to all these things. Yes, then just leave it alone. But if you want to live with Christ, then with the one who came up with life, who knows how it works, then it is good to also orient oneself accordingly. So I am someone who in his life always has to rely on experts. Recently we had a power outage in our house. I cannot say, I really got nervous and I really have no idea about it. So really no idea at all. And by that I mean as much as zero idea, except that I know where the fuse box is, which fuse up and down. And then, how glad I am that there are electricians. I had to wait a bit longer for that. It was not so nice. But there are so many things in life where I also trust in experts. I am in my IT field and in other things. And Jesus is the expert for life. And therefore it can only be a good idea to trust in him, to entrust oneself to him. Whoever lives with him lives in the winning team. Regardless, by the way, of how he himself is feeling. And regardless of what others think about it. The first Christians were already mocked for their faith. And the Romans found it absolutely ridiculous that one should believe in a God who had been condemned on the cross. With the most evil and most humiliating death penalty that existed at all. They said, that cannot be. You are not joking about believing in someone who is hanging there on the cross. Hey, hello, that is supposed to be your God? You want to believe in the one who is hanging there like that? Are you serious? Look at our parades. Look at our processions. Look at our rule over the whole Roman Empire. That is cool. That is really strong. But that, hey, hello, do you really mean it? That was what a lot of people thought about the Christian faith. The theologian M.T. White once formulated it as follows. The rulers and authority of Rome and Israel, the best government and the most highly developed religion that ever existed, conspired to bring Jesus to the cross. They worked together, together it was then possible. These powers, angered because they were challenged in their authority, stripped him naked, exposed him to public contempt, and celebrated a triumph over him. So crucifixions were always public displays of the rule and power of Rome over people who did not comply with the
have kept the laws. In one of his dramatic statements about the paradox of the cross, Paulus explains, when contemplating the horror that Jesus suffered, that on the contrary God had stripped the enemies naked and exposed them to public contempt and subjected them to a triumphal procession in Christ, the crucified Messiah. That which looked like the greatest catastrophe that could ever happen, and therefore the disciples had resisted it so much. God remodeled that into the greatest conceivable triumph over all powers. That which looked like, that is really the end of Jesus, of his disciples, and that will never lead to anything good. That, Jesus, that was made by God for Jesus the greatest triumph in the whole history of humanity. If God can make the greatest triumph of history out of something as catastrophic as the crucifixion of your Son, then he can still make something good out of all your terrible bad luck and mishaps and out of all my terrible bad luck and mishaps of life. And therefore at this point with the winning team it doesn't matter at all how well you are doing. You cannot be so bad as Jesus is good. That is not possible. On Thursday I am playing table tennis again. We are six people in the team and there are days when I am so bad that I lose all my games. That is not particularly nice, but it doesn't matter if I have good teammates. And Jesus sweeps ever

So was die Gemeinde angeht. Ne? Willi will nicht. Also okay, muss ich mir jemand anders suchen. Also, während... was? Also wirklich gar keine Ahnung davon. Und egal, was andere davon darüber denken. Schau dir unsere Paraden an. Schau dir unsere Pauten an. I
