Human beings are fundamentally in a state of loss, but through faith in Allah, righteous deeds, and mutual exhortation to truth and patience, they gain the pleasure of God and the Hereafter.
Those who believe in Allah and trust in Him will win. Those who do righteous deeds (Salih Amel) will win. Those who speak the truth to one another will win. Those who encourage one another to remain steadfast in the struggle of life will win.
The text is a Friday sermon on Surah Al-Asr (103), which thematises time as a witness to human beings. Human beings are presented as fundamentally in a state of loss, but can gain through faith, righteous deeds, and mutual exhortation to truth and patience. Iman is described as trust, devotion, and a way of life, as if one were seeing Allah. Righteous deeds are defined as acting in accordance with moral principles and the Fitra, benefiting human beings, living creatures, and creation. The text links faith to concrete areas of life such as work, family, and social environment. A connection to the present is established by naming the 21st century as a witness and warning against an age of ignorance and oppression. Messages from Surah Al-Asr
(24.10.2025)
Time is the witness of man. It is a silent witness to every one of our moments, our steps, words, and deeds. Perhaps this is why our exalted Lord swears by time. He swears by the day, by the night[1], by the morning[2], and by the forenoon[3]. In Surah ʿAsr, which I recited earlier, our exalted Lord swears by the time in which we live:
وَالْعَصْرِ – "By the time!"[4], says our Lord. An oath means to take something as a witness. O man! Take heed! The time in which you live will be your witness! Just as your experiences will testify, so too will your deeds and omissions testify. The 21st century, in which you live and leave your mark – with sorrow and joy, with grief and happiness – will be your witness!
– Verily, man is in loss! You will lose, O man![5] You will lose the trial, you will lose the Hereafter, you will lose Paradise, you will lose the satisfaction of your Lord! But – will everyone lose this trial? Will everyone lose the satisfaction of their Lord? The following verse tells us: No! Not everyone will lose:
Those who believe in Allah and put their trust in Him will win. Those who do righteous deeds (Salih Amel) will win. Those who advise one another to truth will win. Those who encourage one another to remain steadfast in the struggle of life will win.[6]
My dear brothers and sisters!
Our exalted Lord tells us in Surah ʿAsr that the believers will be the winners. But what is Iman (faith)? Iman means to believe in Allah, to trust in Allah, to submit to Allah. Iman means to live as if one sees Allah.
When there is Iman in a heart, then there is hope in that heart. When someone lets their faith flow into their work, there is Baraka (blessing) in their livelihood. When someone carries their faith into their family, love, loyalty, and peace prevail in their home. When someone reflects their faith in their surroundings, respect, forbearance, and trust prevail there. For – as the Prophet (s) says – the true believer is the one from whose hand and tongue people are safe.[7]
Our exalted Lord further says that those who do salih ʿamal, that is, righteous deeds, will also win. What does it mean to do righteous deeds? It means to do good and to improve. It means to act according to the Quran, the moral principles, and the natural disposition of man, that is, the Fitra. It means to perform deeds that benefit mankind, living beings, and creation. Whoever can feel pain is a living being; whoever can empathize with the pain of another is a true human being. Thus, righteous deeds include, among other things, sharing in the suffering of others, healing their wounds, helping those in need, and enabling the oppressed to live a better life. To do righteous deeds means to sincerely fulfill our duties as servants by following the commands of Allah in order to attain His pleasure. Our exalted Lord also says that those who advise one another to truth (Haqq) and to patience (Sabr) will not lose. Surah ʿAsr calls out to us the following truths:
If you wish to attain the satisfaction of Allah, then remind one another of the truths that come from Allah. If you see something wrong, remind one another of what is right. Keep one another away from senseless and harmful things. Give one another support and courage. And admonish one another, no matter what happens, never to give up, never to despair!
O Allah, we seek Your pleasure – grant it to us! Make our faith and our devotion steadfast! Make our intentions, our words, and our deeds righteous! Make us Your conscious servants who call to truth and patience! Give no power to those who wish to turn our time into an age of ignorance and oppression.

Botschaften aus Surah Al-Asr
(24.10.2025)
