The conscious utterance of the name of Allah (Besmele) before every action is the central practice for overcoming egoism, receiving divine mercy, and shaping life in accordance with faith.

The Besmele is not a mere phrase that one repeats only with the lips – and it should not be. The Besmele is a way of life for a Muslim, a life philosophy.

The text explains the meaning of the expression 'Bismillahirrahmanirrahim' as a central Islamic creed that describes the mercy of Allah in two dimensions: universal goodness (Rahman) and the special reward of the believers (Rahim). It is explained that the Prophet Muhammad uttered this name in all life situations, from ritual washing to slaughtering, in order to include God in every action. The sermon emphasizes that the utterance of the Besmele is not a mere phrase but a life philosophy that overcomes egoism and reminds the human being of their Creator. It admonishes the believers to consciously include God in their everyday actions and not to separate themselves from Him. As a remedy against egoism, the awareness is named that every success comes from God. The text calls for seeking the mercy of Allah through good deeds and humility and for keeping the Hereafter in mind. It ends with the appeal to live and die in accordance with Islam.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate (31.10.2025) "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim" means "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate." This is the Basmala, which contains two holy names of Allah: "Er-Rahman" and "Er-Rahim." Allah is the Most Merciful (Rahman); He bestows infinite blessings upon all His creatures. He creates[1], sustains life[2], protects[3], and grants countless opportunities[4]. The Most Merciful, whose goodness is boundless, does not distinguish by faith, origin, or gender. Just as the sun rises for everyone and rain is a blessing for everyone, so too does Allah, the Most Merciful, bestow His mercy upon all – without distinction. Yet Allah is not only the Most Merciful (Rahman), but also the Compassionate (Rahim).[5] The name "er-Rahîm" describes the special mercy of Allah, which He bestows upon those who are worthy of it. As an expression of the name "Rahim," the Exalted Allah will distinguish sinners from righteous servants on the Day of Judgment.[6] He will separate the humble from those who submit to others as slaves.[7] He will distinguish those who walk on the right path from those who have strayed onto false paths.[8] He will distinguish the good from the bad, the sincere from the hypocrites, the grateful from the ungrateful, the diligent from the negligent, the merciful from the hard-hearted, and the just from the unjust. On the Day of the Great Reckoning, Allah will multiply the reward for those who believe in Him and perform good deeds.[9] However, the evildoers will receive, according to justice, what they have earned. Honored believers! When we look at the life of our Prophet (s.a.s.), we see that he never let the name of Allah leave his lips, from the first revelations – "Read in the name of your Creator, who created!"[10] – until his last breath. The Prophet (s.a.s.) was convinced that any significant action or word that does not begin in the name of Allah has no blessing.[11] Therefore, he remembered Allah in every moment of his life and sought His help. Whether when leaving the house,[12] when entering or leaving the mosque,[13], during Wudu (ritual ablution), or at the beginning of prayer[14] – he always began with the name of Allah. He said "Bismillah" when mounting his riding animal, when going to bed,[15], when slaughtering sacrificial animals[16], and when burying the deceased.[17] Dear brothers and sisters! The Basmala is not a mere phrase that one repeats only with the lips – and it should not be. The Basmala is a way of life for a Muslim, a philosophy of life. Sometimes we may hear someone say: "Do not involve Allah in this matter!" but precisely for this reason is the Basmala so important. It means, after all, consciously involving Allah in our actions. Whoever says "Bismillah" confesses: "O Allah! I know that You intervene in my life, and I ask You for Your help in this matter." The Basmala is also a unique remedy against egoism. Whoever begins his deeds in the name of Allah does not say: "I did it, I succeeded, I won." He knows that every gift and every success comes from Allah; he does not forget his Creator and does not act egoistically. Dear brothers and sisters! Let us jointly promise to Allah to perform deeds that bring us closer to the mercy of Allah. Let us never forget that the Rahman intervenes in our lives. Let us always keep the Hereafter and the Day of Reckoning in mind. Let us sincerely show repentance and seek refuge in His infinite mercy. Let us never let the Besmele, the key to all good, leave our lips. Let us dedicate every day, every word, and every action to Allah; let us live in accordance with Islam and die in faith. [2] Muminun, 23/80.
