True compassion and effective action against the suffering of the world do not arise from activist activism, but from a deep, all-pervasive inner practice of wisdom and stillness that transforms the mind.

The speaker, an ordained Buddhist and lawyer, reflects on her personal encounter with the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara and the wisdom (Prajnaparamita). She notes that she had initially fallen in love with the outward facade of the bodhisattva, which led to inner tension. Through engaging with the legend of Avalokiteshvara, who acts out of deep compassion, she recognizes that true action arises from an integrated, calm practice. She distances herself from activist activism and emphasizes that dharma practice must be lived twenty-four hours a day in order to be effective. The text connects this spiritual insight with her professional work in asylum and migration law, where she is confronted daily with massive suffering. She argues for using wisdom and compassion not only intellectually but as a foundation for sustainable, loving action.

Okay, wonderful. Thank you, what a wonderful good evening. It's nice that you are here. Let me perhaps briefly introduce myself. Some of you know me, others don't. I am Wir Patma from Berlin, I was ordained in 2019, I have been with Triatner since 2012, but that is not my entire Buddhist life. Before that came a good 35 years in the sign of Sennen. Okay, so sitting, enduring, producing tension is my second face. Okay. And with the ordination, Viratma Vir is always translated as energy and Patma the lotus, the sense of belonging, and she was a lotus of energy. And when I received the name, everyone said: "Yes, of course, Würja had to be in it." And I have to say, that hurt me, because I believe this energy or something like that that I had before my intensive ordination process, that has accompanied me through my life, that is energy that grows out of it, because much was unintegrated, and Würja, so to speak, in my name I actually see as the perseverance to stay with the ball, and I believe that is also what makes up my practice. And therefore I can say, yes, I would not call myself an activist, okay? And certainly not an environmental activist. Okay? Because the topic here is Compassion and Wisdom in the Face of the Challenges of Our Time. And the climate crisis is not the only challenge. Yes, since I was a young person, I have been a member of Amnesty International, and my professional focus as a lawyer was asylum and migration law and criminal law. Yes, so I know, so to speak, what torture is, what sexual violence is, what people have experienced, and I have had to do with them my whole life, until today. Yes, so therefore there is much more than the focus that is mostly now on climate change, much more than misery and suffering, and that right up to the edge, here at this point in time. I can tell you, so to speak, only one thing, what is happening in this world now, where Tehran is being shelled. Many of our clients have just because of family reunification sent the Afghan families with children their national passport into the mailbox of the German embassy. This embassy closed, is only responsible for German citizens, and the families with the children are now sitting in Tehran in a trap and can go nowhere. Yes, that is the suffering today, and therefore I think, so to speak, there is a great deal of suffering. What is going to come to us and what has also fueled the refugee movements, or something like that, is only a part. The matter is complex. Yes, and I am grateful, so to speak, for the first evening, where a lot has already been addressed, what the DM provides us. Okay. And then also what initiatives there are. Yes, how do I deal with psychological overload? Okay. And we had on the last evening, so to speak, Karun, quasi living compassion, acting compassion, through projects, all of that. Yes. Okay. Hmm, I would like today, so to speak, how I and in all those years of my professional activity with the direct contact with real misery, yes, have dealt with it. And what my practice is. If I say, I do not see myself as an activist or as an environmental activist or human rights activist, that does not mean that I do nothing. But I can say, I am, from the heart, 24 hours, 7 days a week, a Buddhist and Dharma practitioner, that I can say. And that is important to me, because the gift of the Dharma, and I was much more politically active before, yes, within the framework of an ideology, yes, to my left there was only the wall and the stone flew over there, yes, with slogans, make yourselves, destroy what destroys you, and all these things. Yes. Hmm, I no longer do that. I no longer do that. Yes, and therefore it is important to me that I for myself practice one hundred percent, 24 hours long, and act from that. What is the gift? Not that I have realized it, but I have understood why it is so important. Everything in the Dharma, it is about, so to speak, about positive states of mind, about developing the creative mind and acting from it. Yes, acting from love, yes, then action is not exhausting. And that is why I dedicated this talk to, a somewhat more complicated name, the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara seen and understood from the eyes of Prajnaparamita. In the announcement, everyone knows, Avalokiteshvara, also the thousand-armed one, stands for active compassion. Yes, for much action perhaps. I question that. Okay. And Prajnaparamita, so to speak, is actually, the Prajnaparamitas are the wisdom scriptures. What we always quote in the puja. Yes. The Heart Sutra, the Diamond Sutra, so to speak, we quote, we do not recite, but it is always a great challenge to engage with them. Yes, we try to think them through, I would say, well, that is not the right way, right? And thereby, so to speak, to let the wisdom ripen and the concepts not just remain concepts and be rationally thought through, remain an idea and as a point of escape, yes, or activism as a point of escape, yes, to really not meet suffering, yes, for that I want to take up the lance today. And I simply start, as in all the years, above all also at Triyana, my practice was. I begin with when did I first encounter the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. It was at the Buddhist Center in Berlin, the Buddhist Gate. Yes, it was still a construction site and Pema Chödrön was, so to speak, just arrived in Berlin at the time. At some kind of festival, the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara suddenly stood on the shrine and there was a puja, from a distance I had not really seen him properly, right? There was a puja, offerings, and I was very close to him. I was startled, these 1000 arms, these eleven heads. I was not amused. I was put off. That was my first encounter with the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. Okay. Scene change, Prajnaparamita, again the Buddhist Gate in Berlin, again a puja, yes, again an offering, and that is why this image is so important to me. Whom do I encounter there, the representation, the very traditional representation of Prajnaparamita. Yes, so one who is the wisdom that rips, so to speak, embodied by a goddess. The first time I consciously perceived there, wow, not a 16-year-old person. Attractive, erotic, a bit androgynous. No, there sat a mature wise woman. She sat there as the form of the goddess. And that is what has fascinated and inspired me about Prajnaparamita over all the years. Yes. Yes. How she sits there. Yes, that is lived life. Although both the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara and Prajnaparamita as divine representations are not historical persons, like the Buddha or Padmasambhava was, yes, but they are supposed to be or are representations that are meant to touch something in the viewer or the female viewer. Yes, and it was especially this maturity that resonated with me in the traditional representation of Prajnaparamita, that resonated. Yes, and that has, since then, I have been able to maintain this resonance. Okay, that was the first encounter with Avalokiteshvara and with Prajnaparamita over the course of time. I sought ordination. I was in training. Integration increased. Yes, I was able to develop something similar to a somewhat more robust, friendly, integrated attitude. Okay, so the ordination training did not pass me by. The study, that did not pass me by. Second encounter with Avalokiteshvara. The Maladha, we all know it, entrance area, the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. Okay. Wow. Wow. And it was in these two weeks where suddenly in meditation something different began. Suddenly this wish awakened, may I become one hand of this thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, and even if it is only a fingertip. That is my wish, right? And there I realized, so to speak, okay, I would say that was effective taking of refuge. Now this wish was there and I knew, it was so strong and this wish to be a part of this thousand-armed one, yes, that then guided me. That was the paradigm shift to the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. My second intense encounter, I had many more. Yes, but my second intense encounter with Prajnaparamita was on my ordination retreat at Akashavana, 3 months. Yes, after two months we were ordained. We still had one month as, so to speak, our first retreat at Akashavana in the vastness. Yes, behind the mists of Avalon, Akashavana unfolds. Yes. So, okay. By then I was already... So, I already had a kesa, at that time still a white one. Okay. Again after a puja. Okay, I was sitting there, the others had already left, I was meditating and all of a sudden this urge was there, to throw myself and say, take my life, I give myself completely. Okay. And that was, I meant it. Take my life, I give myself completely, dispose of me. Okay, very strong. I went to bed and was sick with a fever for a week. I think that's what they call a spiritual crisis. Yes, one thought, okay, did I overstep a bit. Yes, but that also belongs to it. In the course of the years, so after my ordination, you know, the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara is a symbol of the order, yes, so to speak to evoke a benevolent cooperation among us order members or something like that. Okay. Mm. But in all the years after my ordination I noticed a tension in me. Yes, a tension toward the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara on the one hand and toward my experience, so to speak, Prajnaparamita. Okay, something was not right with me. Okay. And the tension increased. Very unpleasant, very unpleasant and I then felt compelled because of this unpleasant tension. What did I not understand about the image of the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, what had remained hidden from me? I knew that 1000 arms does not mean, so to speak, doing more. That couldn't be it. Okay. Not for me. Yes, what had I not understood? Yes, and the more I engaged with the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, also with the image, I realized, okay, I had fallen in love with the outer facade. I wanted the urge to belong, to be a part. Yes, that was not enough for me. I had not understood it. Okay. What was required was to walk the path and to understand, yes, what is behind it? What is behind the facade? What is going on backstage? To this party I want to be invited. Okay, I was quite clear, so to speak, I must look at what is behind it. Yes, and then I looked more closely at the story of the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. What does it actually say? Okay. And you all know the story, but Avalokiteshvara made a vow. Yes, for the benefit of all beings. Yes, I will lead all beings in Tibet, yes, I will lead them to enlightenment. Okay. And should I distance myself from this vow, from this wish, from this oath, should doubts arise, then may I shatter into 1000 pieces. And then he did something. That is how the story goes. He sank into samadhi. Samadhi of compassion, deep compassion on this level of consciousness and tried from this level of consciousness to help beings, to help beings so that they attain enlightenment. Okay, he did that for a while. At some point he opened his eyes and said, he saw, only a fraction had he led to enlightenment. He had been helpful for the liberation, a fraction. And thousands more came after. The cries he could no longer bear. Yes, and then, although he was already working so subtly on a level of consciousness of compassion, doubt came to him, what is all this for, what can I accomplish? Yes, the misery that he had seen, so to speak, was unbearable to him. The doubts were there and now one. Yes, what he said, what was supposed to happen. May I then, when these doubts come, when I want to give up, yes, may I shatter into a thousand pieces. And in this painful process, he then called Amitabha again. Yes, and what happened then? I had overlooked that too. Amitabha came, but what did he do? He did not put the old Avalokiteshvara back together, but he formed a new form from the thousand pieces. Ah. He formed a new form. That was not the old one who had just gotten 998 additional arms and ten heads. It was a new form. Yes, and in this whole story I did not understand much and did not see. First, there was a new form, and second, when Avalokiteshvara gave up this vow, this aspiration, he gave it up and did not know what awaited him. He could not fulfill his vow at all. Hopeless. Why not? That just occurred to me now, and that belongs, so to speak, to the fact that I can become or can approach Avalokiteshvara. He gave the vow under the wrong precondition with wrong views. What did he say? I save or help others, I and others. That cannot work. That can only, yes, the doubt or let's say the shattering, the crisis, the chaos is built in with that, because I cannot bring all others to enlightenment, yes, it doesn't work, yes, it doesn't work on this same level, and therefore he had to shatter. Sadu, he had to fail, Sadu. He had to, so to speak, ah, this awakening. Sadu, that is, so to speak, what this story tells me. Okay. And the work that I have done now, yes, in all this work, namely this breaking apart, yes, that is where I say, okay, in my feeling, that was a symbol in this story of enlightenment. Yes, and something new has emerged from it, a completely new approach, a completely new form. Yes. And what has occupied me in the aftermath is, okay, where do I find this experience in my life? Where do I find it? That is what it was about for me. Okay. One thing I can say, when I back then in the context of the ordination or in my self-commitment, so to speak, to walk the Bodhisattva path, yes, I gave this vow. I did not know what I was doing. I had no idea. I did not know what it means. Yes, I thought it was great, but I had no clue what it ultimately means. Yes, and what it entails. That is why I could only fail at it. Sadu, Sadu, is all I can say about that. And it was painful. It was totally painful, because I tried on the same level to save or help all beings including myself, and that did not work. Huh? And I only want to mention two situations in my life where I can say, yes, also in this shattering and something new emerges, also that I can recognize in my life, in my process, what was so funny with Prana Paramita and a week of fever, high fever and vomiting, that is just one. Yes, but I also had it on the other hand. I had it, for example, this mistake, ah, I was still a bit younger or so, my mother sick, cancer, bowel cancer. I don't know what you know, what happens to a person who has bowel cancer, who starves and dries out over months. Okay. So. And I and my brothers, we cared for a mother. Okay, I sometimes this ah, I don't know, the older ones among you still know the images from Bafra, yes, where you pick up this little pile, yes, you have to be very careful, because the skin already rubs against the bone. Wash in the bathtub, put back or something like that. Yes. And so to speak, my mother, she would so much like to have something in her mouth again, an ice cream and swallow, but she cannot. Yes. And the relief over all those months or something like that, we cared for her. Yes. And to be deep in this misery. Yes. And I always thought to myself, I would give my life for it if you could continue to live. Yes, so deep I was immersed in it. Yes, I I would like to save you. Yes, and when she had died, yes, I still had dreams weeks later, yes, in which I was running up the mountain, so to speak, into our house and wanted to save my mother and I knew it was not going to work. I had failed. I had a false view. I cannot die for her. I cannot take away her suffering. A false view. Me and you. Okay, that doesn't work. It was hell. It was deep darkness. Okay. It shattered. But what happened differently than expected? Yes, it was painful, yes, it was dark, but after that free fall, where I could no longer hold on to anything, where I lacked the strength to grasp, yes, suddenly calm settles in. Yes, and I would say, there was an experience of yes, lightness. Yes, that was no longer the concept, yes, but that was an experience. And the wonderful thing was, what happened then? Then something came, so to speak, where I would say, yes, that was love or grace, as we would also call it sometimes. But the special thing was in this experience, this grace needed no object. How incredible is that. This grace needed no object. Yes, that had this vastness. That was an experience. Of course, in the time that followed, and I can still remember that today, yes, in that state I did not have the feeling that I would have to grasp for the old again, rebuild the old again. Yes, something new happened, a new form formed and of course that was not a breakthrough. That was of course not of lasting nature, because of course over time, as far as I was and I am still not today, old habits naturally washed up again. Yes, I naturally remained in the system. Yes, but what I know is that there began to manifest in me more and more fearlessness. Another experience. Yes. I was actually a lawyer and was so to speak specialized in working with refugees and migration, migrants. Okay, there was a lot of misery, you cannot imagine. Yes, um, that was an incredible amount of misery. Yes. And again, so to speak, I did exactly the same thing. Yes, I fought for these people because I wanted to save them. My energy, my aversion, my hatred was directed against the authority, the foreigner's office, the government, the the and I had so much energy, so much hatred and so much aversion. Yes, of course, I saved a lot, I moved mountains. Yes, I would say so. But I also went under upright. Yes, because one thing I could no longer do at some point. Yes, after so many decades in this work, I could no longer hear the rape of men and women. I could no longer so to speak hear the deportation or the interception on the flight um routes of children into prostitution. I could no longer hear the torture and no longer the slave trade, yes, in the Libyan west, the path that people had to take. I could no longer hear it. Yes, again this concept, this idea, I save the others, I stand up for what is good, did not work. Burnout, I was burned out. Yes, I lacked the strength. I could no longer hold on to anything. Not even that which was my life's work. Being a lawyer in this field was my calling. I had an office. I was someone. What then? The strength to hold on, to grasp, fell from me. It was dark. The crises, yes, suicidal thoughts, depression, everything that was in there, it was properly beautifully dark. Okay. And when then nothing is left to hold on to, the free fall downwards, the calm, the silence, there is nothing more that needs to be defended. There too I would say, again, it was lightness and exactly the same thing happened again. From this lightness my experience was a love that needs no object, that does not have to turn to nothing or something. Yes, that was freedom. Okay. And since then I must say, I can observe in myself a fearlessness. Yes, and that too I would to say is in the story of Avalokiteshvara. Okay. And more and more, where I now let these crises no longer shake me, but truly fully meet them, I can say, yes, more and more fearlessness, more and more compassion, more and more also in the face of what is utterly dreadful, yes, I can remain in positive states of mind. Yes. That is my practice. Okay? And from that I want to act more and more. Since this encounter I must say, is Avalokiteshvara. I only call him Ava now. I am completely on a first-name basis with him. Okay. And Praṇā Pāramitā and Ava belong together for me. Okay. M And um how do I practice? For me practice is above all the basics, not only meditation, also insight meditation, but also ethics. Yes, ethics truly to penetrate, yes, to understand ethics um on a completely different level, e.g. generosity. Everyone can be generous and give. Yes, but as a state of mind truly on a deeper ethical um level to understand that generosity is the deep insight that there is not, that there is actually nothing that truly belongs to us. Okay, these ways of understanding ethics more

Okay, wunderbar. Okay, also sitzen, aushalten, Spannung produzieren ist mein zweites Gesicht. Okay. I was not amused. Ja. So, okay. Okay. Okay. Das was erforderlich war, den Weg zu gehen und zu verstehen, ja, was ist dahinter? Was ist hinter der Fassade? Was ist Backstage los? Was steht da eigentlich? Okay. Ja, was er gesagt hat, was eintreten sollte. Ja, und was passierte dann? Okay. So. Okay. Zersprang. Was dann?
