A Story of Failure - Second Advent

The theological center of Christianity, the cross, is not a hero story but a story of failure that encourages us to acknowledge and share our own failures and breaks as an authentic part of our identity.

I find it important once again to perceive this story perhaps also as a story of failure. Of course one can say that it continues and there is still somehow the surprise of the resurrection and the miracle of the resurrection. But in that moment a great deal also shatters, and I think that Jesus carries that too.

The text is a podcast transcript that deals with the construction of personal narratives and the role of failure in self-presentation. The speakers reflect on how they build facades in job applications and social contexts and screen out unwanted aspects of their lives. They refer to the concept of 'fuck-up stories' to show that sharing failures builds community and promotes authenticity. At the theological center is the story of the cross of Jesus, which is interpreted as radical failure and the opposite of a classic hero epic plot. The resurrection is understood not as a rescue from failure but as the capacity to bear this failure. The text encourages the listeners to acknowledge their own stories of failure and to integrate them as part of their identity, rather than to hide them.

Well, welcome to our regional Advent podcast. This year, we are speaking on the topic of stories and how we tell them. And in today’s episode, we would like to reflect on our own story and how we tell our own story. Exactly, so what are the points we state? What is perhaps also that about which we ourselves remain silent? Because that somehow does not fit into our image of ourselves, which we want to present. And how we perhaps also interpret things. That is also fascinating. So how do we often look at what has defined our life, and what do we take from it? So, welcome to this podcast for the Second Advent with Angelina Viel and Daniel Strecker. Then we start right in, Angelina. Please tell us a story from your life. A story from my life, I believe there are many stories to tell. And interestingly, I also had to do this for my scholarship applications. There I had to write an extensive curriculum vitae about myself, three pages long. And then I naturally also asked myself, so what is a story I want to tell, and how does my whole life fit onto three pages. And what I find even worse are these self-introduction rounds. So, tell something about yourself in three sentences. And I don’t know how it is for you, but I always say my name and then I stop. Yes, what is interesting, what would one tell about oneself? There is also a game form where one has to introduce oneself. I also find that quite interesting, one has to step aside from the chair, there one has to say, here sits XY. I find that very exciting, I have also always done this with groups, because it wonderfully throws one off balance, because then one has to talk about oneself and not just from oneself. That makes the whole thing even more complicated. You just now told about your application for scholarships. First of all, best of luck with that. I am sure that you will succeed. And the other thing is, I had to for my theology studies. When I started that, I contacted my regional church and I had to write by hand. Somehow I put together three pages on why I want to become a pastor and why I am studying theology. And that was exactly what you said, where one then really thinks about which story now somehow fits in very well. And my actual story was, I had just finished washing dishes and said, well, theology would actually be a good idea. That was actually hardcore the decision, if one thinks about it, why I became a pastor. It was simply a decision, of course a little something preceded it in conversations and situations. But I then of course did not write that in at all, because that would have sounded totally strange. Instead, I then told him, yes, I had the conversation and had these encounters. But that is sometimes how it is. So one then also tells or writes what the horizon of expectations somehow allows. Yes, and that is fascinating, especially because there are sometimes different horizons of expectations. For example, with my scholarships, I had one or I applied for a church-related one and a societal one. And there was of course already a certain narrative shift. So with the church-related one, I naturally set the focus on the church, what I did in the church, here the voluntary service. And with the societal one, I also mentioned it, but not in such a broad extent, there I then rather mentioned other things like, I don’t know, student newspaper, competitions and so on. So that is also fascinating. So in which context do I tell which story? That can then also change again. Yes, of course. So just if we now think about, so in the application Do you somehow try to come across as cool, like you did with your scholarship application, but also when you apply for a job, you first tell what is somehow good. And of course, in a private context, it is something entirely different. When someone introduces you or you simply attend an event, I find it difficult if you don’t know exactly where you are and what kind of people surround you. I think that makes one quite insecure. But I found it impressive in an application situation when someone openly stated that they are ill, that they have a really difficult illness, and still apply. And said, so if he hires me, then he gets me as I am. And I have this illness, it belongs to me. And I actually found that extremely cool, because you wouldn’t expect that. But I found it somehow refreshing and also good and honest. And I thought, it is much better not to have so much fake and facade. How do you see building a facade, also in your contexts, where you are on the go, now in your studies or? Yes, it is interesting, because you brought up the example of the application. At the beginning, one is always more cautious and builds such a facade and such a self-image, where one somehow stages oneself as perfect or as perfect as possible. Of course, sometimes one is also asked what one’s weaknesses are. So I don’t know how it is for you, but I don’t state my major weaknesses there, because then I would know, that would be the end at that point. So of course, one then somehow builds a facade and presents oneself in the best possible light. But this facade crumbles after a while. One cannot maintain it all the time. So if I look at my studies now, of course at the beginning, when I got to know the others, especially the professors. What I have adopted is somehow always, when I meet a professor here or also teachers back then for the first time, I try not to come in jogging pants, but somehow somewhat dressed, somewhat neat, simply for a positive first impression, because you don’t get that back. But of course, one doesn’t maintain that for the whole semester or school year. But the more one gets to know each other, the more indifferent it becomes somehow. So of course, one has a first impression. But that fades after a while, the better one gets to know each other. But I mean, what is also cool there, if we look at social media and there this self-staging of individuals, but also of institutions, how they present themselves. And I mean, I manage the church’s Instagram account a bit. And I also look, of course. Okay, what kind of events do I publish? How do I present the church so that it seems interesting to others? I often have to think of my friends in Konni when it comes to applications. I don’t know if you know the children’s book, that episode, maybe not. So, Konni is simply the perfect child. She simply always does everything right. Even if her parents have problems, she can actually do better, although she is, I think, four or five in most of the books. You can also grow up with Konni. But Konni always has her life under control and I believe she would really have the perfect resume if you look at it. And then I sometimes think it is also somehow too smooth for me. And we have also already thought about which episodes of Konni should actually exist, that one would have to invent. So, yes, so Konni in puberty or such things, where questions then arise or or or Konni runs away from home. Such things exist then not, but that sometimes also makes it a bit unapproachable, that one thinks about the stories, that it is indeed not. So, as a child you also mess up and how do you deal with that? And I find that a fascinating question again for today. How do we actually deal with switches? I mean, how do we deal with the stories, with the moments in our lives where things don’t go as planned? I find the cross fascinating in that regard, of course. So, Jesus’ death on the cross, where people have also drawn comics about it. There are very early comics about it. So really a simple line drawing and then underneath it says that someone worships a donkey, because the donkey is hanging on the cross. And where you can see, well, this cross is Jesus’ death, which was also somehow ridiculous and was also for many people back then. So, the disciples had hoped for that and everyone who had followed Jesus. And suddenly he is hanging there on the cross, on whom you set all your hope. That was ridiculous for many, or also that one follows someone or believes in someone who died like a monkey on the cross or like a donkey on the cross. So, really a crazy narrative that we cling to. Yes, because it is above all the opposite of a hero story. You said that everyone back then set their hope on Jesus as the Messiah, who was to liberate Israel from the Romans and finally a new era would begin. But at the end of the day, as you said, he was arrested, tortured and crucified and did nothing. He just hung there. Yes, but of course, it is somehow quite intense, someone on whom you set your hope and who dies somehow before your eyes and with that also somehow the hope you gave. Therefore, and I mean, in the hero story we imagine and people back then surely imagined, he comes with the sword and defeats the Romans. And how the whole thing ended is actually a complete anti-hero story. Yes, and of course, if you now think about Marvel or I don’t know or whatever superhero universe you are in, but of course, the angels should actually come. In the last moment somehow, there is an epic dialogue at the end, where the villain somehow almost triumphs and then something happens and BAM, it flips again and somehow the situation is saved. But Jesus dies, so the story is also told up to that point. And I find it important again to perceive this story perhaps as a story of failure. Of course one can say that it continues and there is still somehow the surprise of the resurrection and the miracle of the resurrection. But in that moment a lot also shatters and I find that Jesus also carries that. So where we always say, he carries our sins, but I find that he also carries a lot of failure within himself at this point. And it is also not just a hero situation that actually happens there. I don’t know if you know the concept, but there are so-called Fuck-up Stories and Fuck-up Nights, so Fuck-up, meaning really, where one stands up and then really tells stories of failure and shares them with each other and not in the sense of wow, that was totally good. And from that I learned the following, but really situations where things went down the drain, to tell that. And I once heard the story of how it originated, that a professor had a colleague and she did not get a job at the university, did not get a call to a position and was then totally dejected and felt as if she were the only one to whom that happened. And the colleague then, to cheer her up, sat down and really wrote everything down, all the jobs he had not gotten, all the papers, so all, all scientific works that has written, which were rejected, all the articles that were rejected, and has really also, so to speak, academically, which is, I would say, a relatively small world, where one somehow shows what one has achieved in one’s life, what one has accomplished, what one has published. And to comfort her, he simply wrote down everything that did not work out. And I think that was also a cool moment for him, but overall, having a moment to admit that, to say that it is simply part of it. And that also belongs to me, even this truly ruthless failure. I don’t know, is there a story, somehow there is, is there a fuck-up story, somehow from your life, where you simply say, come on, that was really completely a fiasco or embarrassing, and I can still somehow carry it, well, not really, no, I fell on my face, and then I missed the bus, and then I somehow met someone else because of that, or I don’t know, is there a story where it simply went wrong? Yes, I mean, I believe there are many, many stories. So I mean, of course, I could also tell stories where I ran into the glass door here and first got something on my nose, simply out of stupidity. But of course, I mean, you know Milch, I am always very project-oriented and apply for many things, and it is clear that I am not accepted. I mean, I applied for the UN Youth Delegate program because I really wanted to do it, somehow to go to schools, to hold workshops, also to travel to New York to the UN General Assembly, and there I was also not taken. I mean, of course, I can say so, I simply have little experience in the field of the nations, but that is clear, was I somehow disappointed. And when you told it, I also have to think of a story from the 6th grade, I believe. I have loved writing short stories or also longer stories since elementary school for my life. And I once participated in a literary competition. Cool. And where I really, really wanted to, and where I really made an effort, so and the story was then somehow a crime story with the FBI and CIA. So completely, completely interesting for a 6th grader, definitely. And I was then rejected. My story did not make it into such a collection with other stories, but a classmate of mine. And I was then at the award ceremony anyway, was in the city library, I just wanted to take a look. Above all, I also wanted to somehow read the other stories. Because I mean, of course, my story was completely outdated, not relevant, but rather really more for 15, 16-year-olds. But I simply found it good, because it was something different. And then I read the other stories. That was all somehow so, yes, he falls in love with the one and it is difficult, or he has difficulties coming out, or something like that. And it was all somehow from the genre perspective about the same. I read it, I was simply just like, why? So, because I simply did not understand it either. And I believe that is sometimes difficult somehow, when you want to deal with failure, simply this understanding. And if I failed somewhere at the UN Youth Delegate, I understood why I was not taken. If we stay with the example of the literary competition, and I believe there are still a thousand other stories, so there was simply the problem, because I did not understand it. I did not understand why my story was worse than the others. And why somehow the other stories, which for me were somehow totally monotonous and boring, were somehow better than mine, which somehow still had a crazy plot twist, where an FBI agent was, then it was a traitor and betrayed the other to the terrorists and no idea. And yes, so that was already quite difficult for me, because I simply didn’t understand why I had failed there. Yes, I think the Menanz also hold a very important point. Being able to follow along. And I think, with a jury, you are always dependent on things where you can’t somehow look behind the scenes. And that is sometimes quite a lot with one’s personal power. But I did actually apply for Voice of Germany, I told you about that once, and was here in Frankfurt, that was still in North Hesse, already a driver and found it somehow once. I had time during that period, parental leave. Then I drove here and said, I’ll just do it for fun. And then I prepared. You then have to somehow sing something for about 30 seconds. And it was a hotel and I found it super tense and also not a particularly pleasant atmosphere and I would also say, a bit superficial. But of course, that also has something to do with the fact that I didn’t advance. I didn’t make it far, I was eliminated in the first round, where 30 people were in that room and somehow sang something for these 30 seconds. And as you also said, it was not clear to me at all by which criteria that is measured. And I found some things good and some things bad and I myself also didn’t perform so well, I suddenly had a complete blackout and there I had to briefly think about what my name is and what I actually want to sing. Yes, that was already intense, because I thought, yes, totally easy. I just go there and it was not easy at all. I was somehow quite tense. And also when I was eliminated there, that actually also pushed me down quite a bit. So that surprised me. You know, I even said, I’m doing it for fun and I also told everyone that. And then the feeling of failing at that was somehow still crap. So in the end and I also went out quite, I know, quite dazed. Of course, there was somehow someone who had listened to the music and someone from that production company who paid a bit of attention to the effect. Of course, and then you start and then it rattles off. And then you ask yourself, what was this actually about and why didn’t that, wasn’t that good enough? And also this feeling of somehow not being good enough is a damn feeling. But I mean, we both voluntarily put ourselves into such a situation in that case, what I mean, it was now somehow about a participation and something one can achieve. And still somehow you then want to somehow succeed. I don’t know, are those stories you normally tell? Actually rather less. And I mean, of course, so right when one somehow fails, it is of course already difficult to somehow tell others about it. I mean, of course, if I had been asked back then, so yes, how is it going? And also with the youth delegates. You also asked how it went, right? And then I also actually have no problem saying, so yes, it just didn’t work out. The problem is often also somehow when you go in with expectations. Because I believe, even if you don’t go in with expectations at all, you still have them. And I mean, of course, so I had my expectations with the story that it is somehow quite good and that if it is not good, that the others are definitely 1000 times better. And I mean, you will also somehow have gone in with expectations at least subconsciously. I do advance, though. Yes, and I think, that was also, that was so, when I was really such a teen or so. That was quite often in my head. Only I was otherwise something and achieved otherwise something. I could play football super badly, but somehow became world champion and such stories, what one has dreamed up, only that in hindsight I also think that I somehow failed to see what actually was, and I once led a session on the topic of “what am I worth” at a youth camp, where it was somewhat about how much the clothes I wear cost, pulling it up to that level, and then I showed a photo from my teenage years, and someone in the group said, “How cute.” And I found that somehow totally beautiful. But I did not experience it that way at all during that time. You know, I was somehow, I found everyone else better and everyone else could do everything better, which is also typical for that age. But I somehow could not see it that way. And I mean, I often find that a pity, that I perhaps always placed an enormous focus on my failure, so that I hardly saw the good anymore, or what makes me who I am. And that is, of course, also a point where dreaming comes in. So if I do something, I want to do it right somehow. But some people do not even start because they perhaps have a fear of failure. We have now been dealing a lot with our own stories. I would like to ask you again from the perspective of faith. Because that is also a bit of a point. So what is it about, it is also about stories that are told. Of course, also by Jesus. Yes, what do you say now as a perspective, as a Christian? How do we perhaps deal with failure? How should we deal with it, or how should we stand towards ourselves, or should we put on a show? What does Jesus tell us? I believe Jesus told us, first and foremost, somehow, you are valuable, just as you are. And it is relatively unimportant whether you now stand in the finals of The Voice of Germany and win, or can study in Oxford, but rather, you have an identity in your faith in Jesus Christ, and that is enough. And you actually do not need anything more than that. You can have your dreams and goals and try to realize them. I also believe that God supports you there as well as possible, provided the goals are not something else. I also believe that dealing with failure is finding oneself again in God and perhaps taking that into prayer as well. So that is somehow my method, when I have really crashed and failed and reflect on things where I have difficu

Also in welchem Kontext erzähle ich welche Geschichte? Also, die macht einfach alles immer richtig. Man muss dann a ca. 30 Sekunden irgendwie was wingen.
