The election result in Saxony-Anhalt poses a concrete threat to the safety and participation of queer and marginalized groups, which must be countered by resolute democratic action.
Those who want to protect marginalized people from violence must resolutely confront right-wing extremism.
The text is a press release from the Federal Association Trans* and Trans-Inter-Activ Central Germany, responding to the state parliament election in Saxony-Anhalt. Federal Association Trans* e.V. and Trans-Inter-Activ Central Germany e.V. demand protection for and solidarity with the queer civil society following the state parliament election.
The results of yesterday’s state parliament election in Saxony-Anhalt mark a political turning point: With 43.8 percent of the votes and thus 39 seats in the state parliament, a party whose state association is considered reliably right-wing extremist has for the first time since 1945 come close to an absolute majority in the parliament. For trans*, non-binary, and other queer persons, as well as for persons with experiences of racism in Saxony-Anhalt, this result primarily means one thing: fear, insecurity, and concern for their own safety. At the same time, queer political equality measures at the state level are threatened to be dismantled.
In Saxony-Anhalt, clear setbacks for queer persons are now looming. In the draft of their government program, the party stated that the federal state has fallen prey to the “rainbow ideology.” Specifically, the party intends to implement the halt of educational programs in daycare centers and primary schools regarding sexual and gender diversity, as well as a ban on rainbow flags in schools. Furthermore, the AfD wants to prevent trans* adolescents from gaining access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy.
Patricia Pederzani, Board Member, Federal Association Trans*: “When right-wing extremist actors come into governmental responsibility, the achievements, safety, and participation of queer persons and other marginalized groups are put at risk. For many trans* and non-binary persons, this election result therefore means not only political change, but concrete insecurity and fear: Can I still live safely in this federal state? Measures such as the threatened halt of trans* healthcare for trans* adolescents or the termination of educational programs on sexual and gender diversity promote exclusion, rejection, and distrust towards queer persons. This is a breeding ground for queer-phobic hate crime. The democratic parties must now show clear stance. Whoever wants to protect marginalized persons from violence must decisively confront right-wing extremism.”
The threat to queer people in public space is currently increasing nationwide: The number of politically motivated crimes in the area of queer-phobic hate crime has more than tenfold since 2015. In 2025, 2,377 queer-phobic crimes were registered nationwide (including 1,294 cases of hate crime directed against “gender-related diversity”). In Saxony-Anhalt, according to the local state criminal police office, alone 50 crimes in the thematic area of “Gender-Related Diversity” and 77 crimes in connection with “sexual orientation” were recorded.
Silvia Rentzsch, Board Member, Trans-Inter-Activ in Central Germany: “For many queer and migrantized people, the political development is long since immediately perceptible. Especially for trans* and non-binary people, but also for people with experiences of racism, such an election result intensifies the feeling of no longer being able to be safe and visibly present as a matter of course. Whoever cuts counseling and specialist centers actively takes away spaces and visibility from people, and thus protection and security. However, an open, democratic society protects its most vulnerable groups. The safety and participation of queer and migrantized people must be a political priority. Saxony-Anhalt needs a policy that protects human rights, defends democratic structures, and does not allow exclusion any further room.”
