The ruling that imitating the opposite sex (tasyabbuh) as well as changing one's sex is haram (forbidden) and belongs to the major sins that are cursed by Allah SWT.
The text is a fatwa by the Malaysian Mufti that addresses participation in a competition for transgender beauty queens. It relies on Islamic legal texts to classify the imitation of the opposite sex (tasyabbuh) and sex reassignment as haram (forbidden) and a major sin. Cited are a hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari as well as a decision of the National Fatwa Committee from 1982, which establishes biological sex as legally immutable. BAYAN LINNAS SERIES NO. 363: THE RULING ON AN INDIVIDUAL'S PARTICIPATION IN A TRANSGENDER BEAUTY PAGEANT

Question:
Assalamualaikum w.b.t, I have a question. Can His Excellency the Mufti provide a legal opinion regarding the issue of an individual participating in a transgender beauty pageant recently? This is because such matters appear to be increasingly rampant in society, especially as programs like these are openly promoted. I request the opinion of His Excellency the Mufti.
Summary of Answer:
The ruling on imitating the opposite gender (tashabbuh) and changing one's gender is haram (forbidden) and is considered a major sin that is cursed by Allah SWT. Consequently, any involvement, support, or promotion of transgender pageants and lifestyles is haram according to Sharia, whether directly by committing tashabbuh, or indirectly as an intermediary and promoter of sin.
Detailed Answer:
Alhamdulillah, all praise is due to Allah SWT, and blessings and peace be upon the great master, Prophet Muhammad SAW, his family, his companions, and those who follow his path.
THE RULING ON TASHABBUH
The ruling on imitating the opposite gender, or tashabbuh, is haram; indeed, it is included among the major sins, as it is established by many texts of Sharia that Allah SWT curses those who commit it. Based on a hadith narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas RA, he said:
Meaning: “The Messenger of Allah SAW cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Imam al-Syaukani stated in his commentary that this hadith is an indication of the prohibition for men to imitate women and for women to imitate men, whether in terms of speech, dress, manner of walking, and so on. [1]
According to the decision of the National Fatwa Committee’s Muzakarah in April 1982, the ruling on changing one's gender according to Sharia is haram. If a person is born male, his ruling remains that of a male, and if a person is born female, her ruling remains that of a female, even if (the male or female) successfully changes their gender through surgery.
THE RULING ON PARTICIPATING IN AND PROMOTING PAGEANTS INVOLVING TRANSGENDERS
Furthermore, the participation of any individual in a transgender-based pageant is haram, even if the individual in question does not undergo any gender change. This is because involvement in such a pageant indirectly indicates support for the organization of the program. Sharia prohibits any assistance or support for actions that are ruled haram, based on the verse of Allah SWT:
Meaning: “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.”
Surah al-Ma'idah (2)
In addition, encouraging or promoting the transgender lifestyle to remain as such is strictly prohibited in Islam. The Messenger of Allah SAW gave a firm warning that anyone who supports or facilitates sinful and wicked acts will bear a burden of sin similar to that of the perpetrator of the wicked act. This is explained through a hadith narrated from Abu Hurairah RA, that the Messenger of Allah SAW said:
Meaning: Whoever calls to misguidance will bear a sin equal to the sins of those who commit that act of misguidance, and their sins will not be diminished in the slightest.
Sahih Muslim
The warning from this hadith is very clear that anyone who initiates, spreads, or becomes the cause of the occurrence of an immoral act will also bear the sin of that act, in addition to bearing the sins of those who follow them. This is in accordance with the principle of Sharia that any intermediary or means leading to something haram is prohibited. [2]
CONCLUSION
The ruling on imitating the opposite gender (tashabbuh) and changing one’s gender is haram and falls under major sins for which Allah SWT has pronounced a curse. Consequently, any involvement, support, or promotion of transgender competitions and lifestyles is haram according to Sharia, whether directly by committing tashabbuh, or indirectly as an intermediary and promoter of sin.

His saying: “(May Allah curse those who imitate the opposite sex among men... etc.)” contains evidence that it is haram for men to imitate women, and for women to imitate men in speech, clothing, gait, and other matters.
[2] Prof. Musa Syahin Lashin. Fath al-Mun’im Sharh Sahih Muslim. (No place of publication: Dar Al-Shuruk, 2002) Vol. 10, pp. 214-215)
Whoever opens the door to evil will bear a burden of sin equal to the burden of those who act upon it, because he is the cause and means in good or evil, and the cause and means carry the ruling of the end goal.

BAYAN LINNAS SIRI KE-363 : HUKUM PENYERTAAN INDIVIDU DALAM PERTANDINGAN RATU CANTIK TRANSGENDER

Soalan :
