Prayer is simple because God is already listening and one does not have to impress other people or God through religious effort.
The text is a sermon on prayer, delivered in the context of the 'Focus Weeks' of a Free Christian Community in Frankfurt. The central thesis is that prayer is easier than many think, because one does not have to impress other people or God. The preacher draws on Matthew 6:5-9, where Jesus warns against hypocritical and babbling prayer. He argues that the manner of praying reflects one's image of God: those who experience God as a trustworthy father pray more relaxedly. The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18) serves as a counterexample of religious effort that tries to 'wear down' God. The preacher encourages the listeners to take the pressure out of prayer and to rely on the fact that God is already listening, because Jesus has made the way clear.

We are at the start of the Focus Weeks. Focus Weeks, one could say, in the past it was said to be almost only prayer vigils. It is about us taking special time to seek God and to experience Him, and together to draw near to the presence of God and to take steps to get to know God better. And since we humans need focus, because a hundred thousand things are always happening, we set ourselves the goal to put focus on it twice a year. That is why Focus Weeks come about, focus on the relationship with God, on speaking with God, on the exchange with God. You are welcome to be part of it. And that is why I want to speak about prayer today. And prayer is for some a topic of fear, then there are so-called prayer enthusiasts. People who are totally into prayer and who always pray and who say, what is the problem? And if there is any question, then it is prayer. Similar to how Jesus is always the right answer, prayer is also always the right answer. And in between there is not much of anything. But I have a sermon theme today, and it is very simple. It is: Prayer is easier than you think. Prayer is easier than you think, because I am not yet coming up with a first point. I do not find that silly. Prayer, prayer is important, we all know that. And if one wants to learn to pray and also wants to reorient oneself towards the conversation with God, then the best place to look up how to pray correctly is Jesus. For He teaches us to pray. He has said quite a lot about prayer, but and. Prayer says even more about, so, how you pray, let us put it differently, indicates which God you believe in. Therefore, prayer always has something to do with, and the way in which we pray has to do with our ideas about God and actually shows what kind of faith we have. So show me how you pray and I will tell you what you believe in. For the way in which we address someone reveals a great deal about what we think of that person and what relationship we have with that person. Are you with me? Yes, so if you are afraid of your father, then you will speak with him differently than if you find your dad cool and have trust in him. That has to do with the person in the relationship. With your teacher you will speak differently, perhaps than with your parents, who knows. Yes, okay. And if I have a good, trusting relationship with God, praying comes easier for me. Is there an inner logic? Because perhaps, for example, I do not have so much of a guilty conscience when I go to that person, or perhaps I have no fear. Therefore, if we now spend a few minutes thinking about prayer, it is simultaneously thinking about God. It is not only about prayer, but it is also about God and His personality. Okay, now let us read what Jesus says about prayer. These are the verses directly before the Lord’s Prayer. Matthew 6:7-9. “But when you pray, do not babble like the pagans, other translations say, like the Gentiles, a nice, old word, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray then like this, or rather, Our Father. And that is where it really begins, then, right? Our Father, you paid attention in religion class, very good. Okay, this text is our starting point for a few thoughts about prayer and why prayer is easier than you think. Prayer is the hammer. Number one. Prayer is easier than you think, because you do not have to impress anyone. Prayer becomes difficult when I think about a lot of things around it, but not about what I actually want to say to God, what is actually in my heart. And we humans are wired in such a way that we do not care what others think of us. And we are also wired in such a way that we do not care what God thinks of us. That means, automatically, when we
to pray, and when we express ourselves toward God, there is somehow this, okay, how am I supposed to do it, how do I really do it right, there is like the helicopter or the eagle above us, we observe ourselves, whether we are doing it right, whether it is good, what the others think, are you with me? And Jesus already at the beginning, when he says here, people, they are my disciples and you should not do it like the others, then he says, please put your entire faith on the right track when you pray, because praying and believing, our relationship with God, what we think of God, is connected with praying. It shows in how we pray. And directly before this text, Jesus has already pulled tooth number 1, namely, that we should pray in order to impress others. Matthew 6:5, and when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners to be seen by others. Truly, I tell you, they have their reward. That means, Jesus says, praying and choosing a form of prayer, choosing words, shaping prayers, so that others think highly of you, ruins everything. That is, of course, silly, if one says, I do not really know whether my feelings were always right, God can already hear through that. We are all in development, but we can realign ourselves, we can become more conscious, okay, I will put aside everything that others think, it should not be important now, God is important. That means, it does not matter to God whether we make beautiful words, whether we form beautiful sentences that others then think highly of. It does not matter to God whether you danced along up here. If you felt like it, to give Jesus honor, great, but so that others see that you are part of it, silly. Are you with me? Yes, that means, Jesus would like us to have a pure, simple heart when we come to God. It should not matter what people think of us, and we should not do anything that impresses others. And that is tooth number 1, and in our text he pulls tooth number 2 from us, and that is quite a big one, that we try to impress God. I will read it again, but when you pray, you must not babble like the Gentiles, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. So what he gives as a negative example and shows is, okay, there are people who try to impress God by doing something, and then he says, oh, I found that good now, or oh, I found that enough now, now I will listen. That was mean now, wasn't it? With the babbling, that we make many words, not everyone makes many words, but the core of it, that we try to find a trick so that God hears us. Oh, we are quick to do that, aren't we? And the great thing is, and therefore praying is actually simple, that Jesus tells us, we do not need that, and therefore we should not do it either. We do not need to make all these thoughts about what we must do for God to listen. But do we still pray at all then? If the pressure is gone, do we still have any desire for morning prayer? We are doing focus now, we are praying from six to seven. How stupid are we, aren't we? It was fun. Jesus is super important, taking a burden off our shoulders, but sometimes it also helps to be a bit religious so that one gets out of bed. Do you understand me? Yes, so if everyone does that and then I am in the group, that might help me get up in the morning, or it might help me overcome myself, to say to God, it is probably sour if you are not there at morning prayer tomorrow, that says, okay, then I will set my alarm a bit earlier. But Jesus says, it is nonsense, it is nonsense, because he wants to be with us. He wants us to put everything aside and that we are followers,
who do not have a false image of God, because it continues right away, that he says, for the Father in heaven, the Father in heaven, already knows what you need. That means, the God who is waiting on the other side in that space, if we imagine it that way, if we were to open a door, he has already opened the door. We do not even need to find a key to open the door, because Jesus died for us on the cross, because he paid for our guilt, the way into the heart of God is practically open. Jesus expresses it this way, he listens like a good dad. And if I assume that someone is already listening to me, that changes the situation. I want to read you an old story from the Old Testament for clarification. And almost everyone knows it. It is the story of Elijah. Who here knows Elijah? Yes, a certain prophet, Old Testament, was like the last man standing, the last prophet who was there, everyone had turned away from God and suddenly there are other priests, Baal priests in Israel and the king listens, his evil wife is not always like that, there are also loving wives, but there it was an evil wife. And he wants somehow to win the people back for God. And there he makes a kind of decision on a mountain, builds an altar and says, come on you all priests, let them show off and they should pray and I pray, then let’s see which God listens. So answered prayer, one could say, is the point there and that God reveals himself. We are now going to read from 1 Kings 18, 25 to 29, where we are shown chattering like they hold on or religious praying without a living God behind it. Choose for yourselves, says Elijah, one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, a great many priests are shown here, so a great many are praying in a large group, they have scraped together everything that was possible, all the pray-ers of the congregation together and now God must hear. Then call upon the name of your god, but do not put fire to it, so they took the bull that had been given to them, prepared it, and from morning until noon they called upon the name of Baal. Baal, answer us, but there was no sound, no answer and they leaped around the altar that had been made and it happened at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, call with a loud voice, for he is a god, he is certainly in thought or has gone out or is on a journey, perhaps he is sleeping, then he will wake up. Then they called with a loud voice and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and spears, until the blood flowed down from them and it happened, when the noon had passed, that they fell into frenzy, that is ecstasy, until the time when the food offering is offered in the evening and there was no sound, no answer, no stirring. So here we are depicted this kind of religiosity, one tries to make a lot of fuss so that God hears, one tries to get him to listen and do something and one tries to drum together everything that somehow works, as many people as possible, as long as possible, all day long as loud as possible, as painfully as possible, to somehow move the gods to do something. So, that is heathen praying, only we are not so weird, but that we think we must get God to listen, we must somehow move him to listen, we must somehow do a marathon or as early as possible or as late as possible or as weak as possible or do as much as possible, so that God finally takes us into account to do something, that exists, right? Can you relate to that? This question, how do I get a gracious God who listens to me? And what must I do? Which button must I turn? Which key can I find and then turn, so that my prayer is finally heard and has a breakthrough? Jesus also pulls this tooth out of us, that we should proceed this way, for he says something very simple, he says, we should not do it that way.
When we pray early, it is because we are keen on giving Jesus honor together with other people in the early morning, on encountering Him, and on praying His themes. When we are keen on fasting, it is because we can focus better on the voice of God, and because it helps us to experience the relationship more intensely and for something to come out of it, but not to manipulate God. There is a fine line there. Praying is much easier, fasting is much easier, if you do not make it religious. Then it is not so bad if you oversleep for the morning prayer, because you did not want to prove anything to God. The only thing that has been proven is that you do not hear your alarm clock. What is written there, what do I mean? And then you say, okay, I will try it differently again, because God likes to listen, and He also listens at nine o’clock. Nevertheless, it is cool to pray together at six, because that is before all people go to work, and there you have a time when you can do it. Praying is much easier than you think, because you do not have to prove anything to anyone. Neither to people, nor to God, a non-religious congregation with passion. I am keen on that. I am really keen on that. Praying as much as it takes, because one loves Jesus, I find that brilliant. Slacking off sometimes, that is also okay. And then seeking the presence of God again and being filled with the Holy Spirit, and then doing the next round. I find that cool. We do not have to impress, reach, exhaust, or manipulate God. You have, praying is easier than you think, because you have a Father who listens. That is the argument of Jesus. You should not do it as if it were a burden, but assume that you have a Father and that you may call Him Father. With this fact, that Jesus puts the word, the address Papa, Father, into our mouths, it strikes away all the religious. Because it was not normal at all back then that one could call God Father. We have grown up with the Lord’s Prayer. And therefore we think, okay, one can say Father to God. Why not? But the Jews did indeed worship God as a Father figure, but they would never have addressed Him as Father. Never directly, I child, you Father. If at all, then we as a people, children of God, and you are the Father over us as a people, but never personally. Jesus says, do you know what? I am the living Son of God. I came directly from the Papa. I have a special relationship with Him, namely a father-son relationship. And I tell you, you may also say Papa, you are shocked. Making this clear to oneself is really important. And there is a tension, because you know, God is great, and actually that is an arrogance. And we can do that only because Jesus allows us to. Because He died on the cross for us, and the Bible says, He thereby made us children of God, His siblings. Our guilt is forgiven and we may again be called children of God. That is brilliant. That means our conception of the One we call when we pray is a loving Father, because Jesus has made us children of this Father. Mikkel, I must take you as an example. Can you handle that? I have already heard that Mikkel once forgot his mobile phone, or that Mikkel was not allowed to take a mobile phone to school once, or that mobile phones were not functional for other reasons. Yes? And when Mikkel then comes from school and the train is canceled and he has no mobile phone, he has found ways to call me anyway. What does he do? He asks someone who looks halfway nice. Could I borrow your mobile phone, please. I do not know what you say then to make the matter so that I can do it. In any case, I then get here and there a call from complete strangers and then hear, Papa, I am standing here at the Aheilgabahnhof, all trains are canceled, it takes two hours. Could you perhaps pick me up? That means, a stranger gives my son a mobile phone to call me. He gives me his
The possibility of connection, you understand what I’m getting at, and he can practically call on someone else’s ticket and reach me and reach my heart. When Jesus tells us that we may call Him Father when we pray, He is saying, you are traveling on my ticket. I give you my relationship, what I have, what I have as the Son of God, the direct connection to the Father, I put that into your hands, you may use it and call directly to the Father, and imagine Mikkel would then chatter like a heathen. If he has a direct connection with me, calling on someone else’s expense, then he starts saying 100,000 things and giving me compliments, and then, yes, you are the best father, what’s up, man? What do you want? I don’t understand that, I mean. The connection has been established. Jesus only came to earth because the Father sent Him. The Father desires a real relationship with us. It is as simple as that. And that means, praying is actually a conversation, where I assume that a loving Father is on the other side. Praying is easier than one thinks. I have no desire for Mikkel to ramble on when he talks to me, but he speaks German. I would like to know what is on his heart, what is really there. And it is the same with praying. The important thing in prayer is not how one prays, but that one prays. That one speaks, that one expresses one’s heart, one’s wishes, but also what one finds wonderful about God, that one finds words for it, whether they are beautiful, whether they are orderly, whether they are chaotic. That is of no consequence to God, for He already knows what we need. Praying is much easier than you think, for you have a Father who listens, but you also have a God who already knows. That means, and this can truly help us when we pray. We do not have to win God over and first gain Him for our request, for He already knows our request. Why should one still pray? Because prayer is not information exchange, but communication and relationship, because it is real giving and receiving. God desires that you are in relationship with Him in such a way that you express what is important to you, what is on your heart, what is currently important. It becomes practically a kind of update. Every time we pray, we date our relationship with God. We do not only keep ourselves informed on an informational level, but on a heart level. And when you have to consider, yes, what do I really want, if I assume that God is truly listening, suddenly your relationship becomes honest. Do you understand what I mean? If I do not simply say something so that it pleases God, but I have to think about what is an honest prayer, what actually moves me, what is actually my greatest longing, what is actually what I would like to do, what is actually what I think of God. That is actually, and the thoughts, and you become honest, then we are in real faith. Then there is really something happening. That means, praying is cool when it is real. Therefore, it is not so difficult at all, because you can also talk with your best friends. You do not constantly think about what to wear so that you can talk. They know how you are. God also knows how you are. And your friends, they even listen to you when you say the same thing 10 times. God already knows. Your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him. Why is it important to Jesus that we know this when we pray? Again, we do not have to win God over, for He is already there, He is like a good doctor who informs himself before he can help. And He knows better, what, in the normal case, what the patient needs, because God is professional in the human business. That is not just your friend, but He is
informed, interested, and involved. He already knows what you are asking for before you say it. But it is important that it comes from our mouth and from our heart, and then God responds from heart to heart. How cool is that? And often He truly knows better what we want. So we also make proposals to God; He does not always agree with all proposals. I always say this, a prime example. Rejoice that you do not get every person for whom you prayed. A few years later you think, oh gee, thank you, Jesus. Okay. And the cool thing is, praying is easier than you think, because it does not require many words. This is not babbling like the pagans. That does not mean that we should not use many words. If we are communicative people, then it can, it will look different depending on how we are made. In the normal case, men’s prayers are shorter than women’s prayers, and that is okay. But there are also men who use many words. You understand what I mean. We are very different. That means, it is not about suddenly making many words foolish, but if it comes from the heart, it is brilliant. But to move God’s heart, it does not require

Könnt ihr was damit anfangen? Was steht da was ich meine? Jesus sagt, wisst ihr was? Was macht er denn? Was willst du? Dann ist da echt was los.
