Truthfulness
The September 11 attacks and comparable phenomena show that the combination of religious absolutist claims with rational calculations of power leads to political and ethical arbitrariness and shakes democracies to their foundations.
This fatal combination of an irrational claim that invokes a supernatural instance and a rational calculus of power leads to arbitrariness – politically as well as ethically and intellectually.
The text analyzes the September 11, 2001 attacks as an interplay of religious absolutist claims and political calculations of power. It argues that religion was instrumentalized to attack democracies and pursue one's own political goals. The destruction of the Twin Towers ended a phase of liberal complacency and spread fear and mistrust throughout society. The author describes a mutual escalation: Islamist extremism needs anti-Islamic sentiments for recruitment, while an extremist right wing uses Islam as an enemy image for its migration policy. As further examples, Ben Gvir's religious justification for the seizure of land in Palestine, as well as JD Vance and Pete Hegseth, who present the war of aggression against Iran as a holy Christian war, are mentioned. The central thesis is that the combination of irrational supernatural claims and rational calculations of power leads to arbitrariness. The text concludes with an appeal to defend freedom and human dignity against these ideologies in the tradition of the European Enlightenment, with critical reason.

The explosives that brought down the Twin Towers are often attributed solely to religious extremism as their origin. However, religious absolutist claims mixed in a volatile way with politics. Religion served as a justification to attack a democracy, shake it to its foundations, and pursue one's own political goals. It was clear that the destruction of the Twin Towers alone would not bring a country to its knees. But thereby, a phase of liberal complacency ended, and fear and distrust began to spread. With each Islamist-motivated attack on a Christmas market, a shopping center, or a news editorial office, the seed for hostile attitudes toward people with an Islamic background grew.
The perfidious calculation behind it: If one side radicalizes, it helps the radicalization on the other side. A mutual escalation began, which still benefits both radical sides. Islamic extremism needed and needs anti-Islamic sentiments in Western democracies to recruit for attacks there. At the same time, an extremist right wing strengthened itself, finding in Islam an enemy image with which it could inflate its inhuman migration policy into a dominant topic. In countries where Islam was widely represented in the population, "the anti-Islamic West" again served as an enemy image to strengthen extremist Islamic movements and to take over or consolidate political power.
A comparable formula is found in the religious ultimate justification of the violent land seizure in Palestine by the Israeli Minister Ben Gvir. Also, the US Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism, claims that he is doing "God's work," and the "Minister of War" Pete Hegseth does the same, repeatedly presenting the war of aggression against Iran as a holy Christian war.
This fatal combination of an irrational claim that relies on a supernatural instance and a rational power calculation leads to arbitrariness – politically as well as ethically and intellectually. In the tradition of the European Enlightenment, we must defend freedom and human dignity against these toxic ideologies with critical reason and generate more passion for the power of reason again.

In our country, it is considered…
In our country, religion is still considered a form of ethics. That is wrong.
On the one hand, religion is a theocratic ideology: Believers must believe every nonsense of the religious leaders, obey unconditionally, and serve them for their entire lives.
On the other hand, religion is a cynical, manipulative game with human fears, longings, and our instincts.
Unfortunately, many humanists have also fallen for the ethical mask of religions.
Philipp Möller is traveling through Baden-Württemberg next week and will participate in panel discussions where our religion is once again pushed upon us as "indispensable ethics." These discussions would actually be good opportunities to point out the "carrot and stick" system, which consists of the promise of paradise and the threat of hell.
The threat of hell and the promise of paradise ride on our instinct for self-preservation. He could also address this. For the sake of "eternal life in paradise," people will do anything, even kill themselves and others.
The belief in the resurrection turns soldiers into willing cannon fodder. Warlords know this. History provides plenty of examples, e.g., 9/11.

Gedanken zum 25. Jahrestag der Anschläge vom 11. September

In unserem Land gilt…
