The Kingdom of God is present where the individual acknowledges Jesus as King and relinquishes their own control through an inner change of rule.
The text is a sermon by Timo Schönig at ICF Essen, which interprets the time after Easter as a phase of encounter with the risen Jesus. The speaker uses the biblical symbolism of the 40 days as a model for preparation, instruction, and repentance. The central thesis is that the Kingdom of God is present where Jesus reigns in the heart of the individual. A 'change of rule' is called for, in which the human being relinquishes their own control and entrusts God with rule over their life. This requires a 'new heart', which is defined in the text as a new inner orientation of will, thinking, and conscience. The text combines theological exegesis with practical everyday guidance and a call to personal surrender.

Welcome, my podcast from ICF Essen. I'm super happy that you've tuned in and are with me. And I wish you some really good inspiration and an encounter with Jesus. And if you like, then subscribe to the channel and activate the bell, then you're always up to date. And now let's get started. I unfortunately brought you some bad news this morning. Oh, so my sermon already starts off well, right? Easter is already over again. So, theologically it's absolute nonsense. The Easter season has actually only just begun. But from a feeling perspective, Good Friday was the big Worship Night, great, maybe Easter holidays, which are about to be over soon. And of course Jesus, Ascension. He has truly risen, Easter Sunday. And what comes now? What comes next? Right, Christmas Eve. Only 256 more nights of sleep and then it's that time again. And it really comes faster than you think. But before you now doubt whether it really is 256 times, I want to ask you a question. Are you ready to truly encounter Jesus? This morning, the coming days, the coming weeks, also the coming months until Christmas Eve, so that on Christmas Eve you say, yes, this year I truly experienced Jesus. I let myself be held in the ropes, the church has invested. I've truly arrived, found my spiritual home, my gift, my calling. Yes, I encountered Jesus this year and experienced new heights. Because that is exactly the season we are in right now after the Resurrection. After the Rising is the time of encounter. Jesus encounters his disciples, many people. And we read this in Acts 1, verse 3, it says there. In the 40 days after his crucifixion he appeared to the apostles and again and again and proved to them in many ways that he truly lives. And he spoke with them about the Kingdom of God. So Jesus used these 40 days after the Resurrection to encounter people, to encounter the apostles. And it was not by chance 40 days, because Jesus somehow still had leftover vacation on earth, but 40 days has a very deliberate meaning in the Bible. Maybe this number has already come up before. 40 stands in the Bible as a sign for preparation, instruction, repentance and as a transition. For example, the 40 years that the Israelite people still had to wait to enter the promised land. 40 days and nights that Moses received the commandments of God on Mount Sinai. 40 days until the judgment of God arrives in Nineveh. And 40 days of fasting now before Easter, where Jesus fasts in the wilderness to go on his mission. 40 days of encounter as preparation for what now lies ahead. The Kingdom of God here on earth. And I believe that is today, exactly this morning, just as relevant. Jesus actually has exactly the same mission. He wants to encounter you today. He wants to show you in many ways that he lives, that his resurrection power applies to your life just the same and he speaks about the Kingdom of God. Kingdom of God. And I am convinced that every person in this world, whether they know it or not, secretly has a huge longing for this Kingdom of God. A kingdom full of peace, full of justice, full of truth and a meaningful eternal perspective. Things that we do search for, but when at the end of the day we somehow turn on the news or when on Monday mornings we have to get up again, then we notice in our life, well, this kingdom of peace, it's somehow not quite present yet. I also want to pray together with you at the start of this sermon and invite Jesus and make ourselves ready, also spiritually on the inside, so that we may now encounter Jesus. We may invite him. How long have you been doing that for the first time? But I tell you, Jesus is knocking right now and he really wants to encounter you this morning. Therefore, if you
you like, you can close your eyes. And Jesus, I am very, very grateful to you that everyone here this morning simply is, that you have made it possible that we have arrived safely and that it is not by chance that we are here today, but that we have walked a path and that you now want to encounter us here today, that you want to show us that your resurrection power, your life, is our salvation. And that we simply may live a completely new life with you. I pray this in your name. Amen. The Kingdom of God and the first thing that makes up such a kingdom, that is a king, right? A ruler, someone who makes decisions and determines where things are going. And when you hear of God's kingdom, I don't know what your ideas about it are. So, I am always something, what concerns. Very, very creative. Chatchi Pity too. I have brought you a picture. And that is, one imagines such a giant palace, right? Wow. I find that really awesome. So, honestly, such a realm, such a kingdom, where a powerful ruler is, everything is somehow also gilded. You can see, it is powerful. And you actually want to experience it. You wonder, where is this realm? The realm of God somewhere up there in the clouds, unreachable? Where is the realm of God to be found? When does it come? And exactly this question the Pharisees had at that time of Jesus already. When does this realm come? Where do we find it? And Jesus answers them, no one will be able to say. Here it is or there it is. For God's kingdom is already here, in the midst of you. And two things that Jesus wants to tell us here is God's kingdom, his rule has already come to the earth through the king. If you are already asking about the king's realm, if you are asking about the kingdom of God, then simply also ask about the king. Get to know the king, for the king Jesus Christ is already on the earth. And the second thing that he makes clear to the Pharisees here is that the kingdom of God is not a physical place, not a center of power, no idea, if you still have vacation days left this year, then where are you going this year? The kingdom of God would maybe be really cool, somewhere behind Italy, a bit to the east. There is this realm and honestly, we would drive there, right? God's kingdom is near. But the question remains, where can I find and experience it? And I have brought you this morning three principles and three practical points so that we can better understand God's kingdom, experience it and be part of it ourselves, to build it. So let us start at the origin. And God's kingdom begins in the hearts in which Jesus reigns. Where Jesus acts, there God's kingdom is already present. And it sounds logical, if Jesus is the king and the king over my life, then my life is God's territory. Then my life is God's kingdom, right? But if I now look into my life and just so ask myself, wow, who is actually always ruling here? Then I notice, okay, these are rather so mixed feelings, these are so mixed feelings. How often am I actually in my life, in my everyday life, ready to consciously take a step back, to ask myself, who is ruling in this area of life, in this situation, me? Are they my feelings? Are they my desires, my fears, my goals? Or are they God's goal for my life? And that does not mean now that you at every tiny decision, whether you, I don't know, you ask yourself, should I eat my Nutella jar with butter or without butter? Important question. So first ten hours of prayer and lowpreis, to clarify that. So if you have clarified it, please tell me, I would really be interested. But that is not what it is about. It is much more about how you deal with the people who do things differently than you. How do you measure, how you deal with other people who have a different lifestyle than you? Who
to think differently, above all people that you perhaps don't even like that much. What are your intentions, your thoughts and feelings exactly in the moments that are difficult? Because I think we experience God's kingdom only as strongly as we are willing to also acknowledge the rule of the King. I cannot serve God with my life and at the same time be king. That simply doesn't work. So we sometimes play it like this, it happens to me too, that I say, hey God, you are King and I serve you with everything, but as soon as there is a situation where I don't agree with what Jesus has planned in my life, what God wants to do in my life, then I circumcise his rule and rule again myself. There are these areas. And the exciting thing is that we somehow have a double standard there, because then we ask ourselves again, yes, wait a moment, Jesus, why is nothing happening in that area? God, you say you bring peace in my life. Why has it turned out like this? Why is it so stupid? And I take the rule from God in this area and wonder in the end and ask God for help in this area where I have in the end taken the rule from him in my life. Our life becomes the domain of the King of Kings. That means, God is kingdom, makes a change of rule and means a new heart. It needs a change of rule and a new heart. And perhaps you already know this Bible passage, but I invite you to look at it once more very closely. And it is found in Ezekiel 36:26. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit. Yes, I will take the stony heart out of your breast and give you a living heart. This promise is given to Ezekiel as the Israelite people were just in exile, so around 590, 570 before Christ. And what is so brilliant is that we can already recognize here how God as ruler and as king rules over his people. How does he do it? Through the renewal of hearts and a new spirit. And we will come back to the spirit in a moment, but each of us has such a notion, when we say, that touches our heart, right? So we are not talking here only about the organ, but heart already has a greater meaning. My heart beats faster than yours for example or I have heartache. My heart is broken for a cause, we usually associate strong feelings with it when we talk about our heart. In this Bible text it means much more than that God only wants to take some feelings from us and inspire new ones, but in Hebrew the word heart is called Lebab and it means much more. It means will, thinking, decisions, conscience and orientation. A new heart means a new inner alignment, a new alignment of my entire life, of my thinking, of my will. In another place in the Bible it says, above all else guard your heart, for from it flows the life. God wants our heart and says thereby, I want to renew your entire life and reorient it anew. This reorienting, the word in the Bible, there is also an older word and it means repentance. To do repentance, repentance, somehow an uncomfortable word or when one hears repentance, one rather thinks, let it be. Repentance is truly the most brilliant thing we can do as Christians. Even if it sounds like crap, it is the most brilliant thing. Repentance means nothing other than turning around and in Greek rethinking. We may allow ourselves to be reoriented anew. I don't know if you have ever gotten really badly lost. Who has ever been on a trip or on the way and gotten totally lost? Okay, yes, okay, that's a few. I honestly said I expected fewer in our mobile age, but congratulations, they were also already able to have no idea where they are. I was once invited to an FHG circle festival. Really cool,
Several FHGs from a district get together, celebrate there, there was delicious food, cool moderation, and I was invited. And that means I had to think about how my Duisburg works, how do I get from Essen to Duisburg. I take the train, all good, I planned my route. So, and then I open my phone basically and then I can enter there, I need to go from here to there, and then I see right away, oh, one hour forty, no desire at all, I can quickly watch two movies in that time. It usually takes even longer due to delays. But I plan my route and set off. In good spirits, AirPods in, I'm looking forward to the district festival, to my sausage. At some point I arrive at the stop and still have to walk about 15 minutes. So I walk and end up in the middle of a residential area where there were simply just houses. And I'm standing there and looking, I don't know at all, Lindenweg or something, I don't know exactly, but in any case, I look, Lindenweg 18, I'm standing in front of the house, but I don't see any festival. So I walk back down the street again, look at the sign, whether it really is the Lindenweg, check on Google Maps whether it's the Lindenweg, it turns out, it is the Lindenweg. It was the right address and the right street and I was standing there, but no one was there. And I really felt like I'd been made a fool of. I was thinking, what's going on here? I'm still right. Meaning, it took 20 minutes until I figured out that in Duisburg there are three times the same address. Can you imagine that? There are simply three times the same street with the same house number. Me in the middle of the south of Duisburg, the district festival somehow super far from me. It took 20 minutes of rethinking before I first got a grip on what's going on here and almost trespassing. I would have almost been in the living room of the people. I was 100% sure that I was absolutely right. At some point I called my friends and I said, I'm standing here at the right address. Where are you? Is it somehow an FHG in the basement or something? I have no idea. I was at the wrong address, even though I had searched for exactly the right thing. And I believe that that also happens to us in our spiritual life. I had searched for peace and love in my life. I had entered the right thing in my DB Navigator. I knew exactly what the way is. And I'm there and I notice, there is not the peace and the love that I had searched for. We need a very precise orientation and a rethinking. And exactly this guide that we need, it exists. We read that in Galatians. But if the Holy Spirit rules our life, he will grow entirely different fruit in us. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. None of these stands in opposition to the law. These are things that we wish for in our life. We would like to arrive there, when we already get on the train and say, hey, that's the direction. But I also want to deliberately highlight a word here, because we read that and think to ourselves, perfect, that's really cool. We all want that. We all agree on that. I believe even most of those who are not Christians would say, that's really, really good. I find it funny how Sören always says, none of us got up this morning and said, I want less peace, less love in my life. We have a longing for it. But here stands a word and that is here rules. If the Holy Spirit rules our life, he brings forth different fruit. That is a huge difference, because how we often live it, we think, okay, okay, if the Holy Spirit inspires our life, if the Holy Spirit guides us, then we experience these things, that's not what it says here, not inspired, not guided or supported by the Holy Spirit, but
We are under the rule of the Spirit of God. We consciously submit and give our lives to allow these things to grow consciously in our lives. Because if we do not, if we hold on to our own rule, then that has consequences. And these consequences we read in verses 19 and 21, it says, the consequences show themselves in impurity, unclean thoughts, lust for pleasure, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, anger, self-worship, greed, divisions, self-righteous separation from other groups, envy, drunkenness, extravagant lifestyles and the like. Exactly these things are red flags, warning signs that something is currently ruling in your life that should not be in the rule. And I want to say this consciously once, as in my story, it is completely irrelevant whether you have sought the right thing. It is irrelevant why you are standing where you are standing and whether you think you are right. If these are the fruits of your life or only of a part of your life, then it needs a change of mind and repentance. It makes me truly sad when my dad, my biological father, who is not a Christian, says, no, I don't need the church. They preach of love and peace, but in the end they are the first people to beat each other up, to somehow talk with each other, over each other. I could just as well simply lead a good life and hope that God means well with me. That is the attitude of my biological father since, since I can remember. What happened is that God's kingdom was not lived authentically. I am aware that we always live in tension, that we have temptations, that we are searching. And I do not find the opinion or the perspective of my father particularly objective either. No one has ever left a church because of Jesus, only because of people. It is not about Jesus. It is about how we authentically live God's kingdom here or not. So, let us start to have more and more humility, to say, yes, I need more of Jesus' kingdom in my life. I need more of God's rule in every area of my life. Because I am the temple of God's kingdom. There is not this one temple in which I am, but I am from now on the temple of God. In the past God's kingdom was so to speak in one place. First it was the tabernacle. Then David planned such a huge temple, his son Solomon implemented it. Today we no longer have that. Back then people went to the temple to bring sacrifices. Today our life should be a living sacrifice, which through us becomes a sign of his rule. And that becomes visible when God's will happens in our life. Your life is a testimony for his rule, because you are willing to repent, to acknowledge his kingdom. In conclusion I want to consciously give you a moment to look at which of these points you can take a next step in right now. God's kingdom is something active, not a kingdom that we visit, but we are God's kingdom. Also the church by the way. Church is not the place you visit to become more spiritual, but because God works spiritually through you, you go to church to participate there and to build church. God's kingdom starts through a new life with the rule of Jesus in your heart. Perhaps you have been searching for this kingdom for a long time, for the peace or the love that you seek. You are at the right address, but somehow also not. And you notice, you have this longing. Then I want to encourage you to invite the King into your life. To acknowledge the rule in all the areas of your life. You can go to the prayer team right away, that is up front on the left. They are more than happy to help you. But you can also say it right away in the worship, Lord, I repent to you. My life belongs to you, you are King in my life, I have a new
Identity. I am now a child of God. I want to serve you with my life. Thank you for your forgiveness and your resurrection power in my life. His Spirit brings forth through repentance and a change of mind in you things that make this kingdom experiential. Perhaps you are already on the way with Jesus into eternity. And yet you notice that these areas in your life are still marked by dominion that comes from you. Where you perhaps this morning right now in the praise take a step back and say, okay, let me take a quick look at who or what is ruling here. And then you can take the step and say, I submit this area to God again. Even if I think differently, even if I think I am right, that is not what it is about. It is about us changing our minds, about us turning around. Then we will experience that other fruits come, that we are ruled by the Spirit of God. This empowers you to bring his victory, the victory of Jesus, with authority into the world. What is his will for your life? I believe you have a calling, you have a vocation. I want to encourage you to find that out. What is his will for your life? Where can you actively build and shape God's kingdom? That is what you are called to. That is the inheritance of the resurrection that we celebrated last Sunday. We receive a share in the kingdom of God. Thank you very much for listening. I hope the preacher has inspired you greatly. We would of course be greatly pleased to meet you in person. So

Herzlich willkommen, mein Podcast vom ICF Essen. Und was kommt jetzt? Was kommt als Nächstes? Richtig, Heiligabend. ...in Ninivi eintrifft. Kingdom of God. Also, ich bin immer was, was angeht. Sehr, sehr kreativ. Also lass uns anfangen beim Ursprung.
