The only lasting and valuable bond a person can leave behind is their personal friendship with God, which endures beyond death and surpasses other relationships.
The most important thing you can pass on is your friendship with the King. The only thing that really makes a difference in your legacy, in what you leave behind, is your friendship with the true King.
The speaker Tobi Mall opens his talk with the personal disclosure of a recent friendship breakup that has affected him emotionally. He uses this experience as a starting point to address the topic of male friendship and the tendency toward isolation. The central theological thesis is that friendship with God is the most important and the only one that extends beyond death. To illustrate this, he tells the biblical story of King David and Mephibosheth, whose life was saved through David's friendship with his deceased father Jonathan. He connects this with the narrative of Jonathan and David, who despite political confrontation entered into an eternal covenant. At the end, he applies the message to one's own life and the question of legacy by identifying the 'God of performance thinking' as the false king to whom many serve instead of the true King.

Hey, it is a real honor for me that I am allowed to be here with you today. This is my first Men’s XXL. I was not there last year, and I read “Friendship.” I read the invitation text again, and it says: “Friendship is something wonderful. Tobi Mal from the Kreichgau region also thinks so.” And, um, now I have to confess something honest to you. Two weeks ago, I had a phone call with my best friend, the one I have been friends with since I was 12 years old, and he told me: “Tobi, I want a cut between us two, because I am disappointed in you. The way things have gone between us in recent years, I can no longer accept it, and I do not want to continue like this. I do not know if you also know that friendships can sometimes come to an end. I hope it is not over forever, but this happened two weeks ago, and it honestly hit me in a way, and then I stood there and was supposed to prepare and deliver this sermon. I said, damn, what am I supposed to tell you about friendship? I, who make so many mistakes in the area of friendship. I am not a role model for you in this. I do not know if you are a role model either. Then you would have to come up here and talk about it. But I thought, friendship is such an important elixir for us as men, because we men tend so quickly to settle things on our own. We tend to go around like the lone wolf. And I realized that this is a topic I have, and it leads to the fact that I am sometimes brutally bad at friendships. At least in my case, and I decided today not to put on a front for you, but simply to tell you honestly and to talk about the friendship I believe is the most, most important friendship. The only friendship that extends beyond death is the friendship with the living God. And perhaps you have been invited here today, and you think, okay, now we have already sung some weird songs, and now some fool is going to talk about God. I am deeply convinced that there is nothing more important in your life than investing in the friendship with God. There is nothing more decisive for your life, there is nothing more important than having a friendship with God. And I want to tell you a story about this, which also has to do with friends, with male friends. It is about the guy whose name is Mephibosheth. A bit of a strange name. Can you say Mephibosheth? Can you say it like men, in a masculine way? Like Mephi Bos. Oh, cool. That really brings a lot of bass. It is really nice. Okay, I like it that way. Mephibosheth was, um, a young man, and he had been paralyzed since he was 5 years old. He had an accident, he could no longer move his legs, and, um, he was the grandson of the former king. The former king of Israel was his grandfather. And Mephibosheth had a problem, because his grandfather had died, his own father had died, and a new king had come to power. And Mephibosheth, who not only now actually had to be exterminated by the new king as the last in the royal line, but who was also paralyzed and in that society at the time, 900 BC, was worth absolutely nothing, he was on the verge of absolute ruin. And now this Mephibosheth is summoned before the new king. The new king had asked: “Hey, is there anyone else? Anyone who is in the line of this old king and could still contest the throne with me? Bring the man,” and Mephibosheth is brought to the king, whose name was David. And he comes to King David, and he is scared, because he assumes that his last hour has struck. And now something happens that Mephibosheth did not expect. And we read the following in
2 Samuel 9:6. When Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, who was the old king, came before the king, he bowed deeply. He prostrated himself before him. "So you are Mephibosheth," said David. "Yes, I am your most devoted servant," he replied. David encouraged him: "Do not be afraid. Your father Jonathan was my best friend, and I want to do you, his son, some good. I am now restoring to you all the fields that belonged to your grandfather Saul. Furthermore, I want you to eat at my table daily as my guest." Again, Mephibosheth prostrated himself before the king and cried out: "What have I done to deserve your kindness? I am as insignificant as a dead dog." But Mephibosheth himself shall eat at my table daily, David said later, as if he were my son. Mephibosheth, who could no longer walk properly, lived in Jerusalem and ate with King David every day. He had a young son named Micah. The story of Mephibosheth changes in a moment. He assumes that now everything is over. And then comes a sentence that King David says, a sentence that changes everything. He says: "Your father Jonathan was my best friend." Mephibosheth's father was Jonathan, and he was the best friend of this new King David. He had such a close friendship with him that this friendship had an effect beyond Jonathan's death, namely that his son was preserved from death on account of this friendship. My point today, which I want to leave with you, is that the most important thing you can pass on is your friendship with the King. The only thing that truly makes a difference in your legacy, in what you leave behind, is your friendship with the true King. Because out of your life, perhaps you are a father and have children, perhaps you have no children, but you have things that you leave behind. What Jonathan left behind, the most important thing, was his friendship with the true King. Jonathan was the son of Saul, and King Saul hated the new King David. David was the true King. He had been anointed king. He should have become king long ago, but Saul fought against him. And yet, in this intense conflict, Jonathan and David became best friends. I will read to you from 1 Samuel 18:1, which says: "When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan's soul was bound to David's soul, and Jonathan loved him as his own life." Do you know friendships with men that you hold so close to your heart that you say: "Hey, for you I would give my life. For you I would bury a corpse, damn it, I am ready to do anything for you." Do you know such friendships? These two had this friendship. Here it says: "Their hearts were bound together." The word that stands there in Hebrew actually refers to the inner person, their life. They gave each other their life. They entrusted their life to each other. They were ready to do everything for each other. Come what may, damn it. That is how they were connected. And the intense thing was, Jonathan knew that his own father, the king to whom he had to serve, hated David, because he knew that David was to become king and he wanted to prevent that. But Jonathan decides, in the midst of this, to give his heart to David, to be friends with him. And the two make a covenant. A few chapters later they make a covenant, a promise that is the most intense promise you can imagine. And David says to Jonathan in 2 Samuel 20:14: "But you have promised to show the steadfast love of the Lord to me while I live. And when I die, do not cut off your steadfast love from my house, even when the Lord has cut off the enemies of David, man by man, from the land." They give each other a promise and say to each other: "Even if
you die, I will take care of your descendants." They give each other this promise. They make a covenant with one another, and it is forever safe. Jonathan actually had the chance to the throne his whole life. He was the son of the old king. He had actually said, I will become king someday, and he fought for this king. He murdered for the people, he won battles for them. He did crazy things for them. They had large estates, they had big houses, everything possible, much, much, much, much money. And you could say today, yes, um, I don't know, how are you doing, what you would like to leave behind. Um, I, I think, hey, the best thing I can leave behind is somehow, I don't know, much wealth, so that my descendants have a lot of it. So, Jonathan bet on that. He gave everything for it. In the end, Jonathan dies, and his father, and all that he had worked for for years was no longer worth anything, because the royal line was over. Another one became king. I want to tell you the story of my, of my dad. My dad, um, was always somehow with God, but my dad actually, they always had to choose between two kings. On the one hand, my dad believed in God. He knew who the true king was in his life. But there was another god in my dad's life, whom he served a lot. That was the god of performance thinking. My dad, he busted his ass. He wanted to achieve something, to make an impact. Why? Yes, he wanted to enable something for his family. He wanted to be someone who leaves something behind for his children, who enables them to have a good life for his wife. And my father did it in that, he meant it well, but he sometimes overdid it a bit. With us, it was, for example, like this: we got money for grades of 1 and 2 on the report card, nothing for a 3, and for 4s, 5s, 6s, you had to pay something back. So, that means, it was, for him, performance. That was simply important. He didn't mean it badly, but that was the most important thing for him. My dad was, um, he was, uh, also active in the congregation, in the church, and for him, it was the worst. He couldn't understand it when people came late. I remember mornings, because we set off. Uh, my sisters were always late. My father hit the steering wheel in anger, because he found it so, he found it so terrible, when we were in church and others came late, that was still the absolute worst. So, if, if people didn't deliver their performance, that, that he could, that was unthinkable for him. My dad worked from morning until evening, and the god he served was performance. And one day, something happened that changed his life. One day, something happened that changed his heart. My dad had a heart attack. I was 20 years old, 13 years ago. He had a heart attack, and this heart attack, that was like such an open heart surgery of God on my dad, because this one ended very mildly. He had, he had an operation, but he only needed one stent, but he checked, my life, as I have lived it so far, will no longer continue to work like that. And I remember, I drove to my dad in the hospital, and it was, I think, the most honest moment that I had with my father. He, I sat in his hospital bed, I always had a good relationship with my father, don't misunderstand. When I once brought home a 4 in music, he didn't talk to me for a week, but whatever. Um, and I, and I sat at the bedside, and he said to me, Tobi, I want to see your children grow up, and I want, my younger brother is 10 years younger than, than me, he was still 10 years old. I want, I want to see him grow up, and
I want to tell you, I love you so much, and it has changed something in his heart. His life has changed. My father started working less. He started coming home earlier. My dad started drinking less alcohol. My dad started being more merciful with himself, with other people. My dad started doing some kind of pastoral training and working through issues in his life. My dad started serving a King. He started getting involved in a friendship with a King, namely Jesus. And it changed his life. And do you know what is crazy? It changed the life of our entire family. It changed the life of my mother. We as children were able to start talking to our parents about topics that we previously could never, ever talk about. And many of us were able to heal, we benefited from the fact that my dad said, I am letting this true King into my heart. I believe in hindsight that it was truly a divine action that he had that heart attack, even though it was really hard, but it changed his life. And my point today is, I am ultra grateful to my father for everything he has worked for me and so on. I am grateful to him for that, but the most important thing is that he has passed on to me a faith that changes my life. I believe that every man has a calling. And I believe, no matter how old you are, in whatever season you are in, whether you are married or not, I believe every man has a calling to fatherhood. We are called to live fatherhood. Maybe you do not have children right now. You may never have children, or you do not have children yet, or you do have some. There is a person in the Bible named Paul. He had no wife, he never had children, but he often speaks of his spiritual children, of the people into whom he has invested his life. The Bible says that every man is called to fatherhood. That means taking responsibility for others. You leave a legacy at the end of your life. And I want to tell you one thing, you can invest a lot of time in building your wealth, your financial security for your descendants, for your family, or simply for your legacy. With Jonathan, that was the case, he had a lot. After his death, it was all worthless. I want to tell you, the most important thing you can leave behind in your life is the friendship with the true King Jesus. Because this friendship changes the lives of your descendants. This friendship changes the lives of those for whom you take responsibility. And you can have many friendships, many good friendships. You can do many things in your life, but you must not neglect one thing. Friendship with the true King. I want to ask you honestly today, how are you doing with your friendship with this King? How are you doing with your friendship with this God? When I talk about friendship, I do not mean that this God is not naturally the Lord of the world. He is the Creator, He is the Great One, He is the Savior, He is crazy. But friendship means, I let this God into my heart. I allow Him to change my heart. What do you want? What do you want to pass on? My point is, the friendship with God is not only about you. For you, it is great, because God changes your life, but it also has to do with your descendants, with the people you influence, with your employees, with your relatives, with your family, with your children. Someone once told me, you have one fucking job. You have one job to do, you must do it. And for us men, that is friendship with this living God. My dad always, uh, invested a lot of time, a lot of money in our financial security. So, there was, I believe
I, no insurance that was taken out for us. When I moved out and left, I think I first had to, I believe, cancel five insurance policies because I could not afford them and because I also did not find them sensible. But he invested so much time and money and effort to secure it financially, so that it always goes well for us, and that is cool. How much time and how much money and how much effort do you invest in the financial security of your life, your pension, your descendants? And now you go on to this: how much time do you invest in the spiritual future of your life and in the spiritual future of your descendants? Jesus is a descendant of King David. And, uh, therefore there is like a role model, a kind of example, where we can say, hey, just as he is, so will Jesus later be. And Jesus later invites the people and says: "Hey, I want to be your friend. I want to live a relationship with you." And friendship means nothing else. True friendship is nothing else than having a heart-to-heart relationship, like David and Jonathan. You know, by true friendship I do not mean drinking buddies. Of course, true friends have a lot of fun together, can do a lot of crazy stuff together, everything is great. But I have a very good acquaintance who was mentally really bad for years, who hurt himself, who had alcohol problems and everything. None of his friends, with whom he was at the KSC every week, by the way, knew about it. Nobody. No one had a clue. That is not true friendship. True friendship means, there is someone who is allowed to get close to my heart. And I believe, we need such friendships as men, as human beings, that friends are allowed to tell us, hey, what do I see in you? Where do I want to support you? Where may I also challenge you? But above all, we need this friendship with the living God, because no one can change my heart like He does. And no one ensures that my life, even after I am no longer here, has a positive impact like He does. In John 15:15 Jesus says: "I no longer call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, for I have disclosed to you all that I have heard from my Father." Jesus calls you friend. And my question to you today is no less than: "Are you His friend? Do you want to be His friend?" Because there is no more important friendship in the life of a man than the friendship with the true King Jesus. Perhaps you are here for the first time today and you say: "Hey, I have nothing to do with that." I want to ask you today. Is it time in your life to stop serving false kings, performance, money, power, sex, whatever. And to begin today by saying: "Hey, the only one who truly makes me happy, the only one who can truly do good with my life, is this Jesus, and I want to start today serving Him alone." Perhaps you are here today and you are, like me, a Christian for ages and you know it all, you say: "Yes, Tobi, nice that you are saying that again today, totally great." I want to ask you this question again. How much of your time and your effort goes into trying to get everything somehow right, to secure your family, to secure yourself. Which kings are you also serving alongside that? Jesus calls you and says: "Hey, friendship with me means that I am the only king in your life whom you serve. And it makes you free, not having to perform so sickly, not being so dependent on other things, because this Jesus leads you into a true freedom. You know, I have, uh, I have two children. Uh, my older one is four years old and the little one is one and a half. And I, uh, I do not know if you can relate to this, sometimes I ask myself and we are also thinking about a third child, but
Sometimes I ask myself, damn, we have brought children into the world, and what kind of world have we actually put them into? So, I might be more of a pessimistic type, yes, but I know that objectively, we are doing as well today as no one has ever done before, and yet the expectation for the future is somehow not entirely positive. Will my children ever experience war? Will my children ever experience famine? What will my children ever experience? I don't know. And I honestly ask myself, hey, what can I do? What can I do for them? What can I give them now? What can I leave them, so that they are prepared for whatever comes? And I have already thought about it: should I, as a pastor, reduce my work and take on another job to earn more money, so that my wife earns even more money, and so that we can put the children into the grip earlier, so that we can somehow ensure that we can perhaps afford a house, or that we can perhaps somehow still get a private pension insurance, whatever? Currently, all of this is financially impossible. But I believe that what I long for most of all for my children is, because I don't know what everything will be worth in 50, 60, 70 years. No idea. But what I wish for is that my son experiences how he is loved by this God, and that this Jesus is his best friend, and that in every situation that comes, no matter how challenging it may be, he may know that my place at the table with God is always free. I can always come to Him. I can lay down every fear. I can discuss every feeling of being overwhelmed with Him. I am not alone in my life. I long for nothing more than for my children to experience who they are in God's eyes. That they do not have to ask, oh, am I loved? We are not looking for people, but that they stand firm, that they can be self-confident, because they know how the true God thinks about them. And I talked about this with my wife a few weeks ago. And we keep talking about it, and we realized, hey, there is no better inves

So Mefi Bos. Oh, geil. Da kommt richtig viel zu Bass her. Ist richtig nice. Okay, gefällt mir so. "Du bist also Mehboschet", sagte David. Komme, was wolle, scheißegal. Der wollte was leisten, was bewirken. Warum? Was willst du? Was willst du vererben? Mir hat mal jemand gesagt, you have one fucking job. Niemand. Wo will ich dich unterstützen? Da will ich dich heute fragen.
