A human life is not isolated but part of a networked coexistence that extends into the past and the future, and suicide therefore also touches the lives of those connected to the dying person.
The text is a podcast conversation between a Jodo Buddhist and an atheist about the concept of community. The Buddhist explains the term Sangha and the Japanese word Tomoiki as a form of coexistence that extends beyond one's own generation into the past and the future. He emphasizes that a human life is sustained by many other lives and that suicide therefore also touches connected lives. The atheist questions this view from a sociological perspective and asks about the conditions under which such forms of community arise. Both speak about the Middle Way in Buddhism as a counter-proposal to asceticism and excess. The text links the topic to current issues such as climate change and resource consumption. It becomes clear that Pure Land Buddhism in Japan is the largest Buddhist school but is little known in the West. The text ends with a comparison between the historical Buddha and Francis of Assisi.

Good day, my name is Conan, I belong to the Jodo Buddhist Community and I warmly welcome you to the Podcast Simply Buddha. Hello everyone! Yes, today I have Jörg as a guest, who kindly produces our podcast, and we have sat down together to simply talk about the topic of community. Just briefly about Jörg: he is an atheist, which means we have here two perhaps different, perhaps slightly different perspectives, but perhaps you could first introduce yourself, dear one. Yes, dear Frank, thank you for the invitation. Yes, I will introduce myself, which is of course always a bit amusing or very original, what I myself want, should, or must introduce. Perhaps just a few basic facts, as one so nicely says. Yes, I am now also 58 years old, and I also live near Bonn. Well, by nature an atheist, and that is a bit about religion or about morality and ethics or similar things, but I do not want to get ahead of myself now, but to explain this a little, I actually come from a Christian household and was strongly influenced by Christianity, but that is not a rebellion against my parents, because they were not really that Christian, even though I said household, but I had a very Christian influence through my grandmother and even wanted to become a pastor, Protestant. But that did not work out for various reasons, it is usually due to the school education or the motivation one has as a young person. Yes, and then I actually held on to the Christian faith for quite a long time and could then at some point no longer reconcile it with my, I will call it now, scientific conviction of things. I am not saying that religion and science necessarily exclude each other, but for me it was only the choice, to recognize the things, to say, okay, for me there is no God, but that has nothing to do with how I carry moral or perhaps also ethical principles within me, which are of course influenced by Christianity due to my background. But I wanted to present this beforehand somehow as a premise, because no one knows anything about me. Anyway, I assume that the listeners do not know too much about me. Who knows. Who knows. Yes, thank you very much. Yes, the Christian influence we have in common. I also originally come from a Catholic household, became a Buddhist over 30, 35 years ago, and yes, in our Buddhism, specifically in Jodo Buddhism, which I have been a member of for several years now, the topic of community has great significance. In the Buddhist sense, the so-called Sangha, as it is called in Indian, the community was originally only meant as the community of the ordained, that is, monks and nuns. Nowadays, however, we understand it as the community of all Buddhists. And for us, the term community is not only related to the present, that is, to the current society, but it also goes back into the past. So this living together was Tomoe Kiyo, as it is called in Japanese, which for us also includes our ancestors, so to speak, and conversely also the succeeding generations with whom we live together. And therefore, the concept of living together is relatively broad for us. But I think we do not have so many differences. It already starts there. For example, I understand now and I should actually, how shall I say, be able to recognize. I do not understand the connection of a community that reaches into the past or goes back, or reaches forward, if the future is ahead. I do not understand this connection between the present being and then feeling connected to the community in the past. So I suppose
People who share the same belief. No, not necessarily. So we do try to explain. Yes, so with regard to people, people of the past sounds a bit odd now, but we simply say that we have our own lives also because other people contributed to them. First of all, our parents; without our parents, if we had never been born, then again the grandparents, one can trace it back like that. So even if one does not know them, that is, does not know them. Yes, there is Christianity or also this divine spark or something like that, which can then be transmitted and viewed as a metaphor. So I don’t quite understand. So it is more about gratitude for the people who contributed to our living our lives as we do now. So not only in terms of kinship, but also, for our part, our teachers at school, our friends who support us and help us in everyday life, and therefore, for us, an entire community of other lives is attached to a human life. That means, if one goes to the extreme and says, for example, that someone commits suicide, then from our perspective, he does not only kill his own life, but also the lives that are connected to it. So the opposite of individualism, gratitude. A little bit. Community not like in Western groups of group-ED, but community like an Atlema community with the word community. Yes, that is this word Tomoiki, the Japanese word. It literally means living together. Yes. But it also means symbiosis. Now I understand very well, yes, exactly. So a mutual dependence or connectedness in a positive sense. Do you think that such a thing primarily arises when people live very closely together? Because such a thing also develops from the idea, so in the steppes, where over there, what is that, I am a thousand kilometers in that direction and then one meets once a year or so. Also that, or in today’s time, of course, with all the online conferences, one does not necessarily have to live around the corner to be connected with one another. I always think, where does it come from? It comes from there. And since I am saying, oh, let’s try, as I already tried to convey earlier, to try to look at things scientifically. And I quickly ended up in something like sociology and think to myself, how does a belief arise, in this case Buddhist, that speaks of these communities? Because you need, for the first time, as a group, that famous in-club-out-club thing. But I don’t want to always explain everything like that, but that is what happens in my head. Yes, yes, yes. Ah yes, I just give my group, we dress up amusingly, we speak a different language, we name things differently, and thereby we already make ourselves different as a group from outsiders. Of course, we need a common idea, religion is always very suitable for that, and thereby we include all of us, in a positive way, but also exclude other people. Then I am now being very simple and think to myself, yes, the Japanese, they also do not have much space on their island, no wonder that they say, yes, we must all, unfortunately symbiosis, together and think of each other and so on and so forth. That is only, I am only explaining what I think, we are also happy to discuss it, but only why I am, I am making quotation marks right now, only because I am asking strange questions, likewise. I do not find strange questions. So I am also not Japanese, I do not live on the island, now I have to say, yes. Yes, that is right, now I also realize that. Yes, no, it is by no means meant in an exclusive sense, at least in our case. We also have few differences between laypeople and ordained members within the group. Yes, well, that is clear. Yes, although other religions do like to do that, of course. Yes, but and
In our community, for example, we also have people who, for instance, have a Jewish background, who have a Protestant background. So the trend is towards a second religion, right? Yes, perhaps. This can again be explained very well with the Japanese example. In Japan, there are two major religions: Shinto, the original nature religion and ancestor veneration, which is strangely intertwined with Buddhism. Yes, but we, as Westerners, we also only ever hear about Zen here, and I can somehow shoot arrows blindly and spend the whole day with it arranging some kind of gravel ground coverings. Of course, that exists too, but that Zen comes from Japan and has also strongly influenced Japanese art, but it is a smaller one. Ah, it is not really the mainstream or anything like that; in terms of membership, one of the Zen schools is already quite large in Japan, but I would say the influence of Zen in Japan is rather cultural. Well, I understand. So it is not the case that all Japanese people meditate every morning and evening. That is not the case with us either; we do not do silent sitting meditation. Our direction, that is, this Pure Land Buddhism, is mentioned there; in Japan, it is by far the largest Buddhist denomination. So with the most... those who know the denomination or with the most members. So this is not just our Jodo-shu, but there are other schools said to be in that direction. Interestingly, it is still relatively unknown in the West. Now back to our main topic: the community. I am, of course, also interested in how one can feel connected into the future, and if I ask so freely, I accept all of this, by the way. So I also appeal to that. Kronen has known me for a little while now. But I also want to briefly offer this to the listeners, if you are, so to speak, my... but so, so rude is not meant at all. I also do not want to hurt so-called religious feelings, although I, of course, as an atheist, always think: who is hurt? Who actually cares about my artistic feelings? But that is another layer, and therefore I ask such things. So again, no public... the future community is good for me; that is something that is not unique to Buddhism, but that one thinks of future generations so that they also have a good life. Especially in terms of climate, that is natural, and if one looks at many indigenous peoples otherwise, they naturally often have a similar way of thinking. That one also deals sensibly with resources. Resources, because we never really rethink ourselves. Moderately, so that others also still have something left. That is the so-called Middle Way in Buddhism: that one does not fall back into one extreme, namely being wasteful without limit. But also not into the other, namely living too ascetically and thereby becoming unhealthy. As one can see from the life of Buddha himself, that is, Shakyamuni Buddha, the so-called historical Buddha. He, after all, grew up as a prince in a very wealthy family. At the age of 29, he left the family home because he came out of the palace for the first time and then saw real life, where old age, illness, and death, which are also associated with pain, exist. And then he decided to leave home. And then he lived in asceticism for six years. Where is that located? My little joke. And then he realized that both are wrong, so it was simply... We have something similar. One can actually compare it a bit with Francis of Assisi. Yes, that is already interesting, and I believe that if one would now go much more often into real persons, that is, also into the mythos, by mythos I mean...
Now, stories that are not proven. So, the fact that Buddha was a historical person is sufficiently proven, right? The ones I make up. We don’t know 100%, so a bit like Jesus, we don’t know that 100% either, but nevertheless, this idea that someone from a highly noble house, through confrontation with the street, changes his view of things, that this happens more often in stories, that is also something I can nicely explain, like with Paul and with ha ha ha, now we are back in Christianity, but this turning around due to the confrontation with suffering, yes, exactly, is always gladly seen. Now, this is not meant maliciously by me, but we have that, for example, also in things like the later Queen Elizabeth, who is Elgar, how she drove, and there it was always shown so nicely: look, she, as the daughter of the king, does lowly jobs in the war to follow the country, and so on. I will not compare it with butter now, but I find that these stories are always told so nicely, nice for the people, because then they think, yes, it can also work. If it were always so simple, then I would drive the whole rich of this world a bit through, through what, what I call karkutter. Does it still mean anything, karkutter? Karkutter is, I think, now called mumbe. Umbei used to be umbei, but karkutter is not on the gang. Karkutter is on the gang. Paris is on its, no, karkutter is not on the gang, but Paris is on its, just in passing. Okay, let’s come back to our conversation. Yes, where are we now? Yes, we have now the past, the community, I understood that, and the idea of the community or the general human being into the future, so a kind of responsibility, a taking along of the insight, and a gratitude into the ancestors, which we have very little of in our Western German society, and a responsibility into the future for the living, which is actually also just a kind of participation in everything around us, yes, exactly, because we normally, I think, participate in what is happening now, in the poor suffering people next to me, and then also a participation reflecting on what goes into the future, these are time differences, exactly, okay, agreed. Yes, so basically it is about realizing that one cannot exist alone in the world. That is, the poor person is once again blamed, that the poor person must say, we are seduced in that regard to be against community and to push the individualist to the front, and thereby a moral basic framework is also missing for the next love and similar things. That is so stupidly stamped. That is complete nonsense, by the way. We thought there is no artistic, at least I know of none, empty, because it is simply the idea. I believe in nothing in that regard. I do not believe that there is a higher power, philosophical good plans. I believe that every jeg is back in it, in which every jeg is different. So gladly in the Enlightenment, gladly in the annual Kant, who was himself a Christian and also an antisemite. But that was then in the number, one must always see it in the time. People say then, I don’t know, if one finds someone’s religion shit, to put it in German, and I hope I can speak like that, then it is also measured in the past. Then it is not just because it was once abtodate, good. But I believe no one claimed, to return to, there are certainly basic works. The Raffile alone in the Schlaub, there alone the Soviet and Jon and some ideas that have seen themselves as the atheist spearhead, yes, good. The Buddhist must is also always seen as an atheist religion. The seeing Buddha was not a god, but I understood that, yes, there is
There is actually no god in Buddhism. So, there are these six realms into which one is reborn, and one of them is the realm of the gods. But the gods are, so to speak, also just humans; they have their flaws and are therefore not yet completely freed from suffering. But that reminds me a little of the Christian God-like figures or something similar, who are then always very... well, that was a slip of the tongue, but what I can understand is the idea of a god with flaws. Yes, exactly, that is how it is seen. And the difference is that with us, one can become Buddha oneself, whereas in Christianity, one cannot become god oneself. Slowly, slowly, slowly. That is a beaten path: God is in all of us. You are already there. One has simply... that is also this Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which is very difficult to explain. This Trinity, as it is called, is not yet many other things, as opposed to permanence. Thank you very much. That is the Catholic speaking: that the Holy Spirit is in all of us. That is exactly this story that God is in all of us, in terms of the idea. But there is one god and no other god beside him, monotheism, and the begotten Son: "I have given you my son so that you may be freed from sins." That is, so to speak, the idea behind it. However, I believe that many things we find in the Bible, we also find, for example, in Buddhism. There are many commonalities, also because, in Buddhism or, conversely, in Christianity, since Buddhism came before Christianity, many contents from Buddhism are present. There was indeed an exchange. Yes, there was indeed also an exchange. That is the idea, for example. There is a funny book called "The Bible According to Biff." That can really be recommended. In it, the life of the young Jesus, or how Jesus became who he is, is described. He is then called Joshua or something similar. Wait, that sounds so Christianized, as opposed to artistic. Yes, of course. I just want to show off that I know that I have good reasons. I wanted to make this joke about: Did you know what Jesus's girlfriend looked like? Long and dry, because he went into the desert and a long drought followed. In "The Bible According to Biff," he does not go into the desert, which is from a Bible, but goes on a pilgrimage. He then comes, for example, to India, gets to know Buddhism, comes back again, and incorporates it into his teachings. But that is, of course, fiction. That is just "The Bible According to Biff." But it is understandable, and there, for example, this divine spark is explained very well, and this divine spark is also explained as the God in all of us. And now it is your turn again. Yes, we would call that the Buddha nature, which dwells in every human being. Yes, okay. It dwells in us, but it is, so to speak, sleeping, because we are still here in everyday life, getting upset and sad, and still have all these human things. And as soon as we then come one step further, according to our belief, into this pure land, which is not necessarily geographically located but can be understood in a spiritual sense, this Buddha nature can be awakened. And that means, so to speak, that we are on the path to our true self or on the path to Buddhahood. Now we have been going back and forth a bit and then realized that there are probably already parallels in Christianity, or, to put it colloquially, the Buddha in all of us, the God in all of us. But then the lack of a divine figure, a single one, is missing, as it is not monotheism. Exactly, yes. And exactly, I now sound more like someone speaking about Christianity as about atheism. But to perhaps explain that again: I have no ideology or no religion. I can hardly talk about things that I do not have. But you have certain values. Yes, of course.
Of course, but they are, of course, from what does "of course" mean? For me, it is completely natural that I recognize someone in exactly the same way as I recognize myself, so love yourself, and that will be quite similar in Buddhism, that this community history is absolutely yes, and that is why we also have no problem celebrating, for example, Christmas, because it is also about neighborly love, and also in Buddhism, the love for other people, that is called compassion, that plays a big role for us, yes, of course, and values are, I believe, universal, yes, and then this famous, that we, so the pseudo-categorical imperative of Kant, is always a bit misinterpreted, but this doing no one anything that would also be done to you, that, well, yes, there are also a few parallels there, there is even a comparative study on the categorical imperative in comparison to the Buddhist bodhisattva thought. A bodhisattva is someone who is, so to speak, on the threshold, he is just about to, he has taken certain vows, and one of these main vows is precisely that one fundamentally takes that as soon as one has, so to speak, attained liberation, has escaped from this cycle, that one, but then comes back again to help other people, I understand, yes, that means that for us, compassion arises from a different motivation than in Kant. One might, I understand that, I am now only, which, due to the mythological, by mythos I always mean what is told, the wise person who actually has the chance to remain in the beyond, but then comes back again, it is about joy, it is not about proselytizing, I assume, from the outside, not at all, to give joy, to participate, and so on and so forth. And are there real bodhisattvas? So can one say, here, the accusation, I want to put a thic

Also entgegengesetztes Individualismus, bedanken. Ja. Ich denke halt immer, wo kommt's her? Daher kommt's. Ja, stimmt, jetzt schätzt mir auch drauf her.
