True faith consists in the dynamic balance between the fear of divine punishment and the hope in divine mercy, with the fear to be understood as a loving concern and the hope as an incentive toward virtue.

When in such a moment hope and fear come together in the heart of a servant, Allah will surely grant him what he hopes for and protect him from what he fears.

The text addresses the psychological and spiritual balance between the fear of God and hope as the core of Islamic faith. It uses the narrative of the dying young man to illustrate that these two feelings must come together in the heart of the believer. The sermon warns against misusing divine mercy as an excuse for sins or negligence, which is described as a trap of the devil. At the same time, fear is defined as a loving concern for God's pleasure and not as a panicky anxiety. The listeners are encouraged not to fall into despair despite their own faults and weaknesses, but to trust in the infinite forgiveness of Allah. It is emphasized that a person is never alone in his life, since God is closer to him than his own jugular vein. The text concludes with the call to internalize and continue this balance in prayers and in the conduct of life.

:﷽ And the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: (…) We hope for Your mercy and we fear Your punishment (…) Living in the Balance of God-Fearing and Hope (17.04.2026) Our Prophet (s) visited a young man who was on his deathbed and asked him: "How do you feel?" The young man replied: "O Messenger of Allah; I hope for the mercy of Allah, but I am also afraid of my sins." In light of this sincere confession, the Prophet of Mercy (s) announced the following glad tidings to all believers by the example of this young man: "When in such a moment hope and fear come together in the heart of a servant, Allah will surely grant him what he hopes for and protect him from what he fears."1 Dear believers! Islam is a religion of balance. Among the most important concepts that ensure this balance are fear and hope. If one compares faith to a bird, then fear and hope are its two wings; without their balance, it cannot reach its destination. Dear Muslims! God-fearing is not an ordinary fear like being startled by the darkness or fleeing from a danger. Rather, this fear is the concern of losing the love of our Lord, the anxiety of having played away His trust, and the bashfulness of feeling ashamed before Him. Hope, on the other hand, is the source of life for the believer, the joy of his soul. It is a feeling that enables the servant to never turn away from the infinite mercy of Allah, no matter how many mistakes he commits. But one thing we must not forget: true hope does not mean neglecting one's duties or persisting in sins by saying: "Allah will forgive anyway." For among the most cunning traps of Satan is to deceive people and lead them to a careless attitude toward Allah's forgiveness.2 Dear brothers and sisters! A believer is a person of balance; on the one hand, he trembles with the concern of falling into sin, and on the other hand, he strives for the pleasure of Allah. How comforting is the divine message: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Allah forgives all sins. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."3 Dear believers! Let us consciously internalize: hope is not passive waiting. To have hope means to live in accordance with the commands of Allah the Exalted, to hold fast to righteous deeds, and to seek His pleasure with all sincerity. We are human beings and we commit – consciously or unconsciously – mistakes. But true hope means that even when we fall into sin, we do not despair, but rather turn again to the mercy of Allah with the words "My Lord is all-forgiving." Let us not forget: In this life we are never alone, we are not unprotected, not lonely, and not aimless. We have a Lord who is closer to His servant than his own jugular vein4 and who hears each of our prayers. We have a Creator whose mercy is infinite, who forgives our shortcomings and pardons our mistakes.5 Dear brothers and sisters! Let us build our life on this delicate balance and shape both our devotion and our prayers under the guidance of this divine standard that the Quran prescribes for us.6 As in the supplication of our Prophet (s): "We hope for Your mercy and we fear Your punishment"7, we should express this delicate balance in our prayers, internalize it deeply, and continue our journey of life with unwavering trust in Allah. May our Lord make us among those servants who guard themselves against His punishment but do not lose hope in His mercy for even a single moment.
