Personal faith is a stable, protective inner structure that is purified through intellectual enlightenment and offers the human being emotional security and unconditional love in moments of helplessness and failure.
You can never fall deeper than into the hands of God. I still consider this a very important word today, one that also encourages me when I now dare to do all kinds of things where you can always fail too. What happens in the worst case? Then you might fall into these hands, but it will not get worse.
The text describes the personal development of faith of Willi Weitzel, who understands his image of God as a protective tent. In childhood, this faith served as emotional protection, which was critically examined and purified through the study of theology. Weitzel emphasizes the separation between institutional church and personal faith, the latter functioning as a source of freedom and relief from feelings of guilt. He refers to the passing on of this faith to his three children, whom he describes as unconditionally loved and never punished by God. The beauty of nature is seen as a mirror of God, which underscores his attitude of wonder toward the world. The text refers to the necessity of God for one's own happiness and the coping with helplessness, particularly in parenthood. Finally, faith is presented as a sustaining force in moments of failure, based on the trust of falling into the hands of God.

Perhaps it is deep red, dark red, made of thin, smooth fabric, held up and supported by light metal poles. It envelops, encloses him, the tent that Willi Weitzel shapes with his hands. Because I felt very comfortable in this tent, such a small single-person tent, which is so cozy, which also protects you from below. This tent is his image of God, which he paints during a seminar at school. I can still remember quite well such summer nights in my youth, in my bedroom, when it was too warm to sleep under the blanket. But when you take away the blanket, you feel so unprotected. And then I had this son, ah yes, he is there, he is now there, he protects you, you don’t need the blanket, one could sleep much better then. And then I practiced this and felt protected. That is how he feels for him, his faith, deep inside. This feeling has remained with him. He had preserved it, it accompanies him to this day. Yet again and again, dark figures sneak into this tent. A bad conscience, feelings of guilt, which burden, deceive his faith. So how many people walk around with a bad conscience, because they think they have to fulfill some expectation that simply does not exist from God’s side. In his youth, his inner self rebels against this image, resists it. Because it is not his image of God. He begins to doubt it, to question it, tries to detach himself from it, to free himself. If one translates God as love that envelops us, that also catches us, who is simply so great and has such a love that we cannot even imagine in human terms. When Willi Weitzel speaks, it seems as if there is no wall, no facade, that protects him. As if he opens up inwardly, personal, trusting storytelling, making himself approachable. He studies theology for four semesters. It helps him, he needs it for himself as enlightenment. To intensively engage with what faith is, to detach himself from his childhood faith, which he carries with him for a long time. That was simply very liberating, simply understanding more, over-belief, where can I also distinguish between God and the church. And that made me free and more relaxed with my faith. This other way of believing, he wants to convey, bring close to his three children. He has made it his task, he has set himself this goal. That they always know, no matter what nonsense you do, the loving God, he is always there for you, he will never punish you. Also, the roots of his faith lie in his childhood. It is his parents who drag him along by the hand, pull him into the church. It is he himself who later jumps into the hopscotch course, hops in. It is the always same rituals, the scent of the bitter, spicy in the incense. It is this mood, this atmosphere. All of this shapes him, connects him to his faith to this day. When I go to church today, it is like docking onto what I experienced as a child. There I can ground myself, there I come to myself, there I come to my roots. When Willi Weitzel shines, he shines completely. With eyes around which small laugh lines wrinkle, which transition into the smiling dimples on his cheeks. It is a shining that comes from within, that flows outward, that surrounds him entirely. We only had one biology teacher, who was also a religion teacher, he simply said, look at this, look at these trees. Also look beyond the horizon, do you understand what this is? This is all creation here. And a bit romantic after Gültel. But nevertheless, I found it beautiful for myself that God is reflected in the beauty of the world. His gaze is alert, attentive, awakened, open, clear. As if he sees the world with the eyes of a child, discovers it. With eyes that marvel, that are curious, interested, eager. I
I am happy to marvel. And I also find that marveling is, first of all, a kind of openness that I have, one that I have perhaps preserved from my childhood. And yet, he hosted the show Willi-Wilz-Wissen for nine years, accepts nothing at face value, wants to know exactly what is going on, to understand things, to understand the world. Doubts, which are totally human, which must arise, regarding faith. But a life without God, that is something Willi cannot imagine. He needs, he wants God in his life. I have noticed that going through the world in such an atheistic way does not make me happy. I simply lack a dimension. And if I did not know that there is the theoretical possibility that a God might exist, I would probably actually invent him. There it is again. That inner child that Willi Weitzl has preserved, that flashes up, that shines. In those moments when life often comes at the world, when your children are born, then one feels so helpless, how they develop. One would most like to always protect them, which is not possible. My oldest daughter is now 18. When she gets into her car with her driver’s license and drives away, then I can say, dear God, just protect her. That is simply comforting for me, that I have this faith there. Because in these moments he knows that there is this deep red, dark red tent into which he can slip. That shelters him, protects him, shields him with its roof, carries him, suspends him, holds him with its floor. One can never fall deeper than into the hands of God. I find that to this day a very important word, which also encourages me when I now dare any new things, where one can always fail, what happens in the worst case? Then you might fall into these hands, but it will not get worse.
