The first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hiddscha are a special time in which good deeds are particularly valuable in the sight of God and the faithful are called to spiritual purification and compassion for others.

There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than in these ten days.

The text is a DITIB Friday sermon that points to the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hiddscha and the significance of its first ten days. It relies on a Quranic verse and a prophetic tradition to justify the special value of these days for good deeds and spiritual purification. The month is presented as one of the four sacred months in which war and unrest are forbidden and the pilgrimage takes place. The sermon describes the rites of the pilgrimage, in particular the standing on the Plain of Arafat, the stoning of the Devil, and the Festival of Sacrifice on the tenth day. It encourages the faithful to make use of these days through fasting, prayer, and supplications for the oppressed and for peace. The text connects personal spiritual practice with the desire for a purified soul and inner peace. It is pointed out that no one knows whether another Dhul-Hiddscha will come, which underscores the urgency of making use of these days.

The Virtues of the Month of Dhul-Hijjah and the Ten Blessed Nights (15.05.2026) With great joy, we once again approach a time of spiritual purification and inner renewal. If Allah, the Exalted, grants us the opportunity, we will enter the blessed month of Dhul-Hijjah this Sunday with the sunset. Honored Muslim women and men! Our exalted Lord points to the special value of the first ten nights of the month of Dhul-Hijjah with the Quranic verse “By the ten nights!”[1] Every moment upon which Allah swears is a divine call to us: a call to awaken from heedlessness and to reflect. Our Prophet (s.a.s.) also made the virtues of these days clear when he said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than in these ten days.”[2] Beloved brothers and sisters! Allah and His Messenger announce to us the virtues of these days. So let us consciously recall the value of the month of Dhul-Hijjah – especially its first ten nights. Let us pay attention to these special times so that we do not miss their blessing and spiritual fullness. And also, so that we may fill our book of deeds with good and reach the morning of the Festival with a purified soul. Dear believers! The month of Dhul-Hijjah, which we will welcome in a few days, belongs – just like the month of Dhul-Qaʿda, whose end we are currently experiencing – to the four sacred months in which war and unrest are forbidden. These months are special times of peace, security, and above all, sensitivity towards the rights and dignity of our fellow human beings. Furthermore, the month of Dhul-Hijjah is a blessed time in which one of the five pillars of Islam is fulfilled: the pilgrimage. On these special days, millions of believers from all over the world stream to Mecca full of longing. There, they lay aside all worldly titles and differences and unite in their white Ihram garments in the awareness that they are nothing but servants of Allah. As they circumambulate the Kaaba, they open their hearts to Allah. During the standing (Waqfa) on the plain of Arafat, they truly experience a trial of the Day of Judgment. By symbolically stoning the devil, they promise to stay away from evil and seek refuge in the infinite forgiveness of their Lord. Especially on the ninth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah – the Day of Arafat – one experiences on the plain of Arafat almost a foretaste of the Day of Judgment. On this day, the Talbiya resounds on the lips, tears fill the eyes, and the hearts carry nothing but the hope for forgiveness within them. The tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the Festival of Sacrifice. The prayers are performed, and the sacrificial animals are offered. The sacrifice reminds us that the path to Allah also consists of being close to people, sharing their worries, and empathizing with them. My brothers and sisters! None of us knows whether another month of Dhul-Hijjah will reach us next year. Therefore, let us strive to make the best use of these days. If we have the strength to do so, let us enrich – like our Prophet (s)[3] – the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah with fasting. And if this is not possible for us, let us at least try to fast on the Day of Arafat, so that we may enter the Festival with a purified heart and inner peace. Let us entrust our prayers on these days to the “Guests of the Most Merciful” who are located at the holy sites. Let us ask them to pray for the liberation of the oppressed as well as for peace and tranquility in the world. We too should connect our hearts with these blessed places during every prayer here. With every Takbir, may we see the Kaaba before us; let our prayer rugs become for us like a piece of Arafat, and let our supplications be like a silent standing before Allah. Thus, we wish to partake together in this great spiritual joy. May Allah count us among those servants who purify themselves through the blessing of Dhul-Hiddscha and reach the morning of the Festival with a pure heart. May our Friday be blessed.
